The second Tatar invasion was the 1285 campaign of the Golden Horde against the Kingdom of Hungary. The Tatar warlord Nogaj and his ally, Talabuga, wanted to take advantage of Hungary's internal political crisis and organized a plundering campaign against it. The Tatars attacked in the north and south-east with two armies, but they encountered strong resistance from the start, and were defeated at Pest by the royal and noble forces. They then retreated through Transylvania, while the local barons and the population inflicted further heavy losses on them.

The Han Chinese fought against the Mongols for 45 years. There were hundreds of battles in total. In 1259, the second Mongol emperor (Mongke) was killed in Diaoyucheng. This led to the early end of the second Mongol westward expedition. Meng Gong, the general commander of the Song Dynasty, was the only general who could defeat the Mongol army continuously during the heyday of the Mongols. He almost never lost in his battles with the Mongols. The final defeat of the Han Chinese was related to the lack of the Song Dynasty and horses. Genghis Khan conquered the Western Liao Empire (Khitan 1124-1218) in Xinjiang in 1218, and then went to war with Khwarazm. Before Genghis Khan's death (1227), the Han Chinese (Song) and the Mongols were military allies, and the Han Chinese and the Mongols did not go to war at that time. After the Mongols destroyed the Western Xia (Dangxiang) and the Jin (Jurchen), they fought against the Han Chinese in 1234. 45 years later, in 1279, the 8-year-old emperor of the Han Dynasty (Song) surrendered to the Mongol Kublai Khan.

During the second Hungarian Invasion of 1258 King Ladislaus IV was indeed according to historical reports residing in western Hungary. Nevertheless it doesnt mean that the Mongol invasion was a success, as the defence of the Kingdom was left to his subordinents, managed by Ladislaus IV himself. Most of the historical accounts (Simon of Keza, Pope Martin IV) during the medieval period state the oposite. Even though the Mongols ravaged the country side, they didnt manage to succesfully capture the improved fortresses and had difficulties with the cold frezing weather as well. Most modern Historians agree with this view as well. During the Battle of Hódmezővásárhely (1285) the Mongol Army suffered a significant defeat to the Hungarians, which led the Mongol army to finally retreat from Hungary. All those events led to the unsuccesfull Invasion of 1285- 1286.
As with most great empires there was both a good side and a bad side to the Mongols -the established the Pax Mongolica which enabled peace and trade between furthest Asia and Europe via the Middle East. Brigandage. the bane of trade and commerce, was reduced to a minimum and many good things were introduced to Europe because of the Mongol conquests and contacts between Europeans and the Mongols - one was in art, textiles and painting. I heard the other day that early Renaissance paintings like those of Giotto and many other painters of the Sienese and Florentine schools were influenced by Chinese and Mongol art particularly how they introduced gold backgrounds and things like that to their paintings and textiles.
Sounds like bunch of revisionism. Most empires had good and bad sides. The effects of trade weren't as strong as one should assume. It was expensive and often came in limited in availability. Merchants and rich enjoyed it for sure. For 99.9% it made absolutely no difference. Their conquest said to have killed off 25% of world population. Approximately, 3% of world population died in WW2, all fronts combined and 1% of that was military deaths. For Mongols, in Hungary, it was 10,000 military deaths and 400,000+ civilians. One needs to imagine amount of violence in those campaigns. No rifles, no tanks, artillery or bombs. Mongols were sedentary nomads. They did not value no art nor care about economic development of subjects. They wouldn't have destroyed entire irrigation systems for regions if they did, they wouldn't destroy libraries. They didn't care about about museum pieces or artifacts. Renaissance started in Italy. Chuch was sole reason why European art survived and evolved to this day. I mean you can google "Christian Art". From earliest days of Roman and Greek classical antiquity to spread of christianity in Roman Empire , subsequnt revival during renaissance and later baroque ... I mean you can clearly see the evolution process.
@@AtomickPixel I partially agree with your comment especially the part concerning the common people -some one has compared the situation to the deep blue sea - what goes on up at the top -the great tidal surges, the storms, tempests and tornadoes have little effect on what is deep down in the sea -change of rulers, changes of conquerors and even massive 'apparent" changes from one religion to another don't have much effect deep down -your average Egyptian peasant's life wouldn't have changed much despite Alexander and the Ptolemies, despite Christianity and later Islam. However I disagree concerning the Mongols - OK about 25 % of the population killed but that's not an insuperable % -the black death had the same death rate but Europe recovered. The Mongols became Chinese in China with the Yuan dynasty, the became Muslim in the west with the Persian ilkhanate and the Golden Horde. Later we have a self proclaimed descendant of Genghis Khan called Tamerlane who despite being sunni Muslim wreaks the same type of destruction but his dynasty too later flowers with richness in architecture, science and the arts generally ultimately producing the Taj Mahal! Marco Polo visited Mongol China under Kublai Khan and he reports nothing but wonders and jaw dropping achievements.
