    This song is raw. Absolutely raw. This is some of the most vulnerable material I’ve ever heard on a rap track. Ever.
    Aesop is incredibly heavy on the out-of-left-field wordplay. But you know what I tend to think about him?
    He’s painting a picture. Some of his tracks are fourteen layers deep, but some of them are just such a well-constructed image that you can be immersed in it completely and sit there for hours soaking it in. It’s not that you don’t instantly see what there is, it’s that it’s such a beautiful display that you keep going back to it and looking at it again.

    • @RemAtmos
      @RemAtmos 2 місяці тому

      It really does just feel like picture-painting a lot of the time. Some of it is perhaps not meant to be that deep, but to evoke a feeling.

    Aesop is the most expressive, authentic, and intelligent hip hop I've ever heard. I've been a fan for almost 25 years. He's easily my favorite hip hop artist. When you come to speak his language, his tracks hit really hard. The problem is, it took me like a decade of being a regular listener to actually get a rock solid grasp on what he was saying. I like MF Doom, he's better than Doom. His themes are a lot stronger for me too. Wealth inequality, power inequality, police brutality, depression and hopelessness, introversion, the beauty of nature and authentic living. I care a lot more about these things than finding a clever new way to explain what I'm going to do to someone else's girlfriend. Especially as I get older. On top of that, Aesop just keeps being amazing. Some albums are better than others, but he doesn't have a single bad album. I'd say he's gotten better over the years on average (though I think Labour Days is overall his best album, but that might be nostalgia).

    The thing is with him, though. While I think he's the GOAT, it can only be subjective. The fact is, if 90% of people can't understand what the hell he's saying, his messages can't connect. All that's left is the beat and his execution. Those are still top notch (It's why I started listening to him in 2001), but he's not the absolute best in the world at those things. He's the whole package, taken holistically I don't think anyone can touch him in terms of talent, authenticity, and consistency, and choice of topics. I think how inaccessible he is disqualifies him from the broader conversation of GOAT. Is his wordplay actually good if it's indecipherable? I still to this day have no idea about half of what he's saying on Appleseed. And it took me half of my 20's to understand Float, Labour Days, and Bazooka Tooth.

    He also has a tendency to use cultural references as metaphors, and I'm just not from the same culture as him. We're both white north american men, but he's almost a decade older than me. I don't catch a lot of the 80's stuff. He's from New York, and I don't get a lot of the local stuff. He's a former Catholic, and I'm not even a Christian, so I don't catch some of that stuff. And when you're completely missing some of the dots you need to connect, you can't do it. So yeah, while I'm a huge fan, and I do think that he's literally the artist operating at the highest level in Hip Hop, he's a hard sell as GOAT. I think he's just in his own category, Appleseeds and Georgia Oranges.

    Party over here, he'll be over there.

    I don’t know if it’s so much wordplay. Cuz to me it’s almost like punchlines, but you aren’t there to deliver a battle rap type bar, it just happens and if you catch it you catch it, if you don’t you don’t. I think a guy like Lupe uses a lot of wordplay in his rhymes pretty deliberately. Aesop is definitely up there, but for me it’s how he doesn’t just simply describe something. He goes out of his way to tell you something with vocabulary that works and intelligence that most rappers would say in a very digestible way. Like his song shrunk. His whole first verse is just him filling out a form at the doctors. If you’re not paying attention though you probably think it’s just nonsense. He takes these simple concepts and stretches them and makes them sound compelling. But yea his wordplay is upper tier too.
