    I really liked this video, and I think steve scott is a real judo expert. The point is of any training system to protect the participants and have them constantly improve while minimizing injury. If you learn to play safe and self-restrained, you can always turn on the dirtyness later, but if you learn to play dirty, you will never learn the principle of self control. There are other illegal techniques in judo, and knowledge is power, but playing safe and effective is the essence of physical education.

      This video shows what the Kodokan traditionally considers "forbidden" techniques. Morote Gari and other throws may not be permitted by the IJF contest rules, but this video does not address this situation. Personally, I have no problem with any of the techniques shown in this video, but made it to clarify what the Kodokan considers as not allowed. I also do not agree with the IJF's position on their current contest rules.

      Leg grapping techniques where forbidden in tournaments because everyone started to do just that and only that - the fighting style went away too much from traditional Judo towards grappling and wrestling only. The ban of these techniques urges the fighters to show a wider variety of throws, which Judo is famous for. If I view a Judo tournament, I want to see some Judo - and not shoot wrestling without atemi.
      The kinshi waza are techniques which are banned because of their very high risk of severe, probably career-ending injury (mostly to the knee).

    I'm blessed to train in a bujutsu self defense dojo. We use all of the judo, bjj and Japanese jujitsu techniques. I use ashi garami all the time to set up my leg locks. Never hurt a soul practicing leg locks. IBJJF tournament rules you get DQ for leg reaping though. So I can't use the honey hole or Russian leg knot. Which is a bummer but I just use the standard anklelock. Which is allowed as long as i don't lace the opposite leg or contort their knee. Only carelessness will equate to injury. Have fun rolling! 🤼‍♂️🥋

    Do jime is not really explained too much, so I'll try to add my 2 cents, to the degree I remember. Many years back in Bujinkan, I was taught this technique in a basic form which consist of grabbing a standing enemy's lapels, then jumping at him so as to grab his abdomen with both legs, performing the core do jime. THE CORE OF THE DO JIME TECHNIQUE CONSISTS OF STRAIGHTENING THE LEGS -- think squatting real hard, just with your ankles hooked against each other behind his torso, picture scissor-cutting him in half. Not hip adduction, but a squat. At the same time you should be trying to get in one of the basic front chokes on his neck. Now, the memory gets foggy for me, but we were also taught to let go with arms and abs, but with legs still hooked, bending down back with our upper body and take him down by attacking his legs, or then release legs and roll back to disengage. There are several ways this technique can hurt the enemy: 1. he may collapse when you jump at him, possibly smashing his pelvis (you sit above and drop onto it with yours), 2. you may keep all his wind out with your legs, 3. you may crush a few of his ribs with your thighs, 4. you may get a strangle on his neck, 5. get a takedown; if none of that worked, it may be better to take initiative and not get smashed into the ground by him, so get ready to lower, release and roll back, may work better with a kick to chin.

    GOOD VID - Well explained and informative thanks but can we look at / reconsider ..... Kani basami (scissor throw) ... this was one of my favorite throws when competing as a kid years ago - before it was banned it was made illegal to put the leg behind the knees - my understanding was that by putting the leg behind the knees they fall forward onto their knees then the other leg at the front of the waist causes the rest of the upper body to fall back with ur leg then stuck behind their knees causing dislocation in both knees , i may be wrong here and going a little senile :) but im sure the safe version is with the baçk leg going lower behind the calves or ankles, scored plenty of clean 'wazaris' without hurting anyone :) - if ur gonne do this in practice do it slow at first both legs jump in at the same time but then stop there and look carefully at the mechanics of the two versions described .. be safe guys an gals

    Ashi garami is banned in Judo competition and randori, but is still included in one of the traditional routines (katas), and is illustrated in various old judo texts. The version shown there is different and maybe more dangerous than the version in the video. In the old texts the player performing the technique (Tori) keeps hold of one or both of Uke's sleeves, wraps one leg round Uke's leg, and pushes the other leg backwards, while pulling Uke's sleeve(s) *forwards* so that he cannot relieve the strain on his knee by falling backwards. It looks like a difficult technique to perform, but very painful and dangerous if it works. See this demonstration: ua-cam.com/video/3YXH_LrcqNc/v-deo.html

      That Kani Basami is a bad one if poorly executed or done with malicious intent. I had a bad experience with Kani Basami in 1980. Kawazu Gake wrecked my right ACL in 1978.

      yeah, so there's hope for everyone else out there with those ankle injuries, sometimes you get lucky and come back 100% with no surgery. I had a bunch of moderate injuries over those four years (this culminated in maybe 2005) but I'm fortunate to say that none of them haunt me. Some of my other injuries did, but none from judo or jiujitsu (so far).
      And I still love kani basami by the way. Once you learn it, you see tons of opportunities for it. I think I'm a sutemi-aholic.

    • @welcomematstevescott
      @welcomematstevescott  6 років тому +5

      I never thought of it that way, but he was a meathead now that I think of it. One bad thing is that the guy who did this was an experienced black belt in Judo and knew exactly what he was doing when he did it. Also, it didn't take place in a big tournament with a lot on the line. It took place at a local Judo meet. I had thrown the guy earlier in the day for Ippon and he came up through to fight me again. I then threw him for a Waza-ari and I guess he figured if he couldn't beat me fairly, he would pull something to try to injure me, which he did. He hooked his foot and leg in with the Kawazu Gake and turned sharply which wrenched my right knee and tore the ACL. He did it deliberately and with malice. Back then, an injury like this really kept you off the mat as the surgery techniques and the physical therapy techniques were not nearly as good as they are today. It set me back a while and when I was ready to compete again, the guy who did this had left the sport and I never heard from him again. Actually, Kawazu Gake, if applied and used correctly is a good move. All techniques are risky to some degree or another, but the ones like Kawazu Gake that carry a higher degree of the risk of serious injury are rightly banned from Judo. It is odd, because we use Kawazu Gake a lot in Sambo and I have not seen an injury result from it so far.

    Quite a few years ago now, as you know sir, grabbing of the pant leg or anything south of the obi was banned in Judo competition. Not for safety, as your hooking demos here were, but because the BJJ players were winning intl. Judo matches with only one throw, (or take-down): morote gari. The thing that bugs me now is that Judoka around the world are modifying classic throws like kata garuma by changing where they grip and how they use kuzushi. I've seen some examples on youtube and instagram that are alarming. Uke's arms get tied up, or in some cases, they get thrown onto their head or neck in an all-or-nothing, uncontrolled manner. I would prefer they went back to allowing leg grabs, but ban techniques in which kime is not possible, as in some of the new side and dropping sacrifice variants of kata garuma I've seen. What are your thoughts on this? Thx. - John

    Kawzu gake and dojime demonstrated in this video aren’t actually illegal in judo. The takedown portion of the ashi garame is legal until pressure is applied to the knee on the ground. A lot competitors and teachers avoid getting even close to these but judo isn’t as limited as people seem desperate to believe.

    but one more time that I've asking a question regarding for the prohibited Ashi Garame I saw the danger of that technique but it is allowed to take down your opponent with using the Ashi Guruma mechanic without using the submission systems?

I have discussed this with different IJF Judo referees in the past and they have always told me that Ashi Garami, even as a takedown from the bottom position, is not allowed in their contest rules. The dangers of the scissors takedown reminds me of the tai otoshi. When done poorly and at the wrong angle, it can tear the knee too. Seen it happen before in my old club, and almost had it happen to me a couple of times. It was fortunate I stopped resisting and decided to fall just in time.

    I’m a bit confused by the ashi garami demo. I saw an old video that supposedly demonstrated it and it looked like tori was spreading uke’s legs apart putting pressure on the knee.
    The ashi garami here reminds me of an open guard in BJJ that leads to leg attacks.

      Thanks for your comment. I've seen the hand placed on the mat when doing this throw by a lot of different skilled people over the years. I've also seen the application as you described. Both have worked. If it works and works with a high rate of success for the person doing it, it's not incorrect.

    • @welcomematstevescott
      @welcomematstevescott  6 років тому +1

      Actually, Prof. Kano never authored a book other than a small book titled "Judo (Jujutsu)" published by Maruzen Company Ltd. and issued by the Tokyo Tourist Board in 1937 ( year before his death). I have a copy of this rare book. The Kodokan staff came out with the initial Kodokan Illustrated in 1956. The book that is out on the market today and attributed to him actually is a revised edition of the original Kodokan Illustrated. These Kinshi Waza were derived from different sources in Kodokan Judo starting in the early 20th Century. If you can get a copy of the Kodokan Illustrated, it is worth having. There were several reprints of the original 1956 edition that came out in 1960, 1962, 1964 and 1970 I believe. All were the same as the original. Thanks for your comment.

The leg entwining was the focus of that explanation. Obi Tori Gaeshi, as you said, does indeed use that leg control initially. Thanks for your comment.

    well... i started judo last year and i enjoy ground fight a lot. i taped out guys a few time with a chest compression using my knees by crossing my legs. today learned it was called do jime and was illegal. not totally sure though, in the video, they are pressing the ribs from the side, when i do it, i make sure to face on side of the guy so that one of my knee is on his chest and the other is on his back. it's roughly the same as when a big guy put all his weight on your chest to make you tap before the countdown for immobilization.

    • @welcomematstevescott
      @welcomematstevescott  7 років тому

      Any pressure from the legs in a "scissors" is considered Dojime. The angle it comes from doesn't matter. You're right, however, this has the same effect as applying your weight on an opponent's chest and torso to get him to tap out.

    • @niscent_
      @niscent_ 7 років тому

      so, i was kinda being an asshole without knowing... well, nobody i rolled with told me it was forbidden.
      i also use this kind of scissoring to finish sankaku jime. because i have long legs, my triangle is too easy to close and it locks without applying enough pressure to choke. so, when i get into a nice sankaku jime, i open my locking leg and slide the other foot up to my heel, then i straighten my legs as much as possible to reduce the space in between and get the choke. i wonder if this has a name or is just a sankaku jime variation, and i hope this is legal in judo.

      Personally, I like lower body submissions and don't think what is known as Ashi Garami in judo and Japanese jujitsu is dangerous. We call it Leg Lacing and use it all the time in sambo. We made this video on Kodokan Judo's Kinshi Waza as a result to some of our viewers requesting us to do so. Lower body submissions have been banned in judo competition since about 1900, but we practice them on a regular basis as we do a lot of sambo and in our Shingitai jujitsu, we use them a lot as well. While the Kodokan may not permit Ashi Garami (Leg Lacing or Leg Entwining), it is a viable and effective technique-and as safe as any other skill.

      It would mess up the ukes knee. Since the leg is wrapped around the knee like that, it's kinda pinning it in place using the entire bodyweight of the tori. If he gets thrown on his back, the entire body would rotate, but the knee would stay in place. Snap goes the ligaments in the knee and carnage ensues

      With the new IJF rules out, I am not sure. About a year ago, an IJF-A referee told me that just wrapping the leg is okay, as in a defensive move, but using it to try to throw the opponent is not. Again, that is just what he said. The bad thing is that there is so much ambiguity in the rules.

    Good video! But with nostalgia I am realizing that judo Is losing ITS vigour, manhood AND braveness.
    I am afraid we Will end up having a kind of "ballet Judo" instead of a real Martial art.
    I did practice It during 4 years in the seventies, AND we had More injuries because of one o soto gari or juji jime than because of a Kata guruma or kani basami.
    My point Is, Martial arts ARE dangerous if not done correctly , not mattering the técnic but the practitioner AND His sensei.
    If Someone thinks they are too hazardous, have them practice gardenry, knitting or ballet but not judo.
    Thanks for posting.
