Michael tackles a restoration that's been long-awaited. A vintage R2-D2 figure from Europe!

I’ll never understand why some so-called hardcore vintage collectors do not like restorations. These toys would otherwise be sad, unsightly relics of their former glory. Restoring them gives them new life!
Retroblasting + Star Wars = A GREAT night.
Yay more restoration!
Yes! More vintage Star Wars!
I’m so glad you get nervous! I thought it was just me!
Taking something apart or trying a process that once begun cannot be reversed . Respect ! X
Star Wars was the first toy line I supported as a little tyke. In the late 70's C-3P0 and R2-D2 were the first two figures I collected. Mom and Dad took to me the store after we had seen the movie in cinema. I recall that I wanted Luke, Han or Vader but those two were all they had in stock at the time. It's a precious memory and I loved them! Over the years I acquired everyone else until the final coin ones - I only managed a couple of those.
lol your cat photo bombed your intro 🤣🤣🤣🤣and it looks like nice cat too
😺😺😺
I haven't seen a one of your restorations in a while. Love it
Indeed! So well done all of them!
Any day with a new RetroBlasting video is a good day! Hoc est in die enim bona! Tu donum!
I've always appreciated the effort you guys put into restoring these figures, way better than anything I could do.
Whoah! I've never see R2's head without the chrome...Neat!
Awesome video
Let's save that toy! Love your restoration videos!!!
You guys take so good care of 80s toys
love these restoration videos can't wait for the next episode
Extremely anxious for Part 2 !
Happy Easter to Retroblasting
Happy Easter to you and yours!
Great video! I love your restorations
I love the teat beaters are in better shape than the project.
Great but also nail-biting seeing you tackle a chrome toy part restoration! Really looking forward to the end result of this one.
It's nail-biting for us too.
Great work Michael. I've had a long day as well as working I traveled by train to visit my friend in hospital. Finally home and settled, its fantastic to get to watch your video. Huge respect to you my friend for handling the recent crap with dignity and grace. Always got your back.
Our best wishes to your friend!
@@retroblasting Thank you!!
picked a R2D2 up on a boot sale for 50 pence , used some chrome model paint on the lid now looks great
It's amazing how you can bring the same level of quality and professionalism to your restorations as you bring to any other sit-down video. Amazing video like always
Good start!
I really love the r2 figure. Not as close to screen as it could be but I love it.
Nice work. I want to see more. I miss your repair videos.
Your cat photo bombed the intro! 😺😺😺
Great to see you feeling better. This is super useful content, I have childhood R2 and R4 that could use work and I'm sure I'm not alone. Almost every kid I knew had a beat up astromech in the toy box.
Awesome. Thanks Michael! I myself have a childhood R2D2 in poor shape, and once again, you've inspired me to try and restore it. I already ordered the replacement stickers online, but I'm going to try the chrome pens, I've had pretty good luck with them. I am stumped on what to do with the blue panels and the small red accent on his dome.
I think if the chrome is shiny enough, a lighter color going over would work for the blue and red, like a marker even.
That's amazing what you go through to restore these Vintage figures... I love the time and research you put into these. Thanks from all the vintage collectors for showing us that the old and faded don't have to stay that way. Much love from Canada.
theres a LOT of carbon scoring on your droid...
Its a very Retro episode of RetroBlasting! You guys always do it right! Making sure a childhood survivor gets the care it deserves.
Looking forward to seeing you complete this. I'm hoping to tackle the repairs on my old toys when I get them out of storage as many are in a well played with condition. One day it'll happen - until then, I can live vicariously through your work!
Take your time and do it right during the process. The results will be worth it.
These restoration videos are fantastic.
Restoration videos never get old keep them coming Michael
Will do! Thanks!
Always cool to see vintage toys being brought back to top spec!
Man I miss this series but great it came back
Awesome video! Can't wait to see R2 restored.
Lovin' this. Cant wait for pt 2
I love watching your restorations! You are truly an artist! Such care and attention to detail, fabulous! William will love his R2 when complete, looking forward to watching part 2.
Nice !
Eagerly anticipating the next installment , Michael !!!
Thank you . 👍
Cool restoration video. New to your channel love what I have seen so far
Love this. Your restorations are the first thing that brought me to your channel.
More friends from over seas...... Michael is just asking for internet/youtube scrutiny... bc if UA-cam has taught us anything is that no one lives outside the US..... LOVE these restoration videos...these inspired me to bring all my star wars vehicles out of storage and restored back to mint.
RetroBlasting is proud to have so many friends from overseas. And yes, William is real too. *Sigh*
I can’t recommend your channel enough, these restoration videos are great!
Like we had something else to do for 4 years except watch you, Toy Palloi,
and my other new favorite Crafsman.
Malinda will love him he's a puppet.
Really cool 👍
whoa once again great vid rb
Is this a subtle '80s "Must see Thursdays" thing😉?
What a lovely surprise. Great to see restorations and living childhood originals.
Watched your 5 part Millennium Falcon and R5-D4 restorations last night and they were amazing. This little R2 unit seems more than a little banged up but I know with your help he'll pull through. I admire your attention to detail. 👍
If you want to ensure that it's as smooth as glass, scrub it all over with some cardboard (even the white side of a matchbook cover )and then again with plain printer or notebook paper. I've been a model kit builder for decades and have found that this method is a cheap, effective and safe way to get a nice polish on plastic, vinyl, etc. without causing a bit of damage.
Finally a restoration video!!!! .... i feel like a man lost in the desert whos found an oasis
Can't wait for part 2
Ooo buddy, looks good! Hope it turns out well!
Very nice! Chewbacca may have been my very first SW action figure, but R2-D2 was the first to truly touch my heart (followed closely by Threepio and Darth Vader.) I know you'll keep us in the loop. No doubt in my mind it'll look GREAT in the end! :D
R2 and Threepio were my favorites, too. I still remember the joy I felt just holding them.
Look at the cat!
Part 2 would be swell!
Always enjoy the restoration vids. Didn't know vac-metalizing services was a thing. Really interested to see how this turns out!
Looking forward to the next one
I hope everything goes well
A Retroblasting and Toy Polloi Restoration in one day ace :)
R2d2 AND c3po..lol
@@lepterfirefall lol indeed mate, can't have one without the other.
What if you become chrome crazy. That could be fun. You should chrome as much of your home as possible.
Only 70s and 80s items though.
"Everything is chrome in the future!"
@@justinthomas7222
That would instantly make it the future too.
Yessss
@@camcordernonsense5264 the Prophet SpongeBob hath foreseen it.
This is a great R2-D2 rescue mission.
Ha I have that same old R2D2 figure. And mine also needs a lot of love. I would love to get it looking like new again.
I can't wait to see the final results.
Ooooooooo.... Restoration -- begin!
Restoration... restoration, now that a video title I haven't heard in a long time.
God Speed R2D2!
I still own my childhood R2D2. I thoroughly cleaned it and put on a new sticker. I cleaned the head but left it in the condition it is (way better than this one and no broken leg).
My R2 is part of my history and remetalizing it would erase part of that history, tht's what i'm thinking. It now looks played with but good and that's the way i want it.
Looking forward to the results 😁
A restoration yes!
Love the video, I would really like to see how you would repair the leg, as I’m in a similar position.
Wizard job
I've seen great success in removing paints with Simple Green, a natural non toxic cleaner. it won't melt plastics.
Yep. We used it in the R5-D4 restoration. ua-cam.com/video/eIF7FHHls8g/v-deo.html
Awesome vid! But I had to do a double take at the still-frame...it looked like you were opening up a heroin kit!!
Would you ever do a restoration at a convention panel? That would be amazing. Kinda sorta like a master craftsmen with a live audience home improvement show.
Interesting idea. I wonder how that would work logistically? The presentation would be easy enough with an overhead screen, but if something had to soak overnight, we'd have a problem. Quite a challenge!
TheMattwolf
Thanks for the reply. Maybe like a cooking show, have multiples in different stages, or maybe have a variety of different items, start with one item, and while it gets soaked/ treated show the work on the second item.
“Overnight” I don’t have an answer for, unless there’s a day one and day two demos at a con.
@@timothyward8695 It's a colloquialism. I have no restoration prowess nor association with RetroBlasting beyond loyal fandom. I was musing on the presentation difficulties of a restoration done at a panel.
I've searched for years in yard sales and junk stores but have yet to find any beater figures. I haven't even see any SW figures, period, aside from flea markets where the sellers think any figure is worth double its actual value. I prefer ones I can restore myself over minty ones, which doesn't matter because I can't find either lol.
You could try using a blue sharpie to put the blue on the dome
It looks a lot like the original
Different approach than using brake fluid and a good result.
I like ur cat
Vanilla Fudge Ripple is watching and taking pointers...
Timothy Ward the cat in the background's name
Waiting for a update👍
Is there a follow up to this video? I'm curious to see how it turned out
Yess
He will ride eternal, shiny and chrome!
Shhhhh! I saw a cat!
No, that was wild animal....
I had no idea Meccano and Kenner had any relationship! Beautiful restoration, by the way.
Somewhat related, but I acquired a Mainline Models vintage (early 80s I think) model train, which had a box labeled for Palitoy, which as I understand, distributed the Kenner figures as well. Did Kenner own Mainline Models? Or were both owned by Palitoy?
Praise the Minogue!
We give thanks and praise! We should be so lucky! - Michael
Thought that I was going crazy
Just having one of those days, yeah
Didn’t know what to do
Then there was R2!
I'd look into masking fluid for the painting though you definitely want to do some research and make sure it won't damage the chrome.
Hi I agree with one of the earlier comments tamiya X23 would be worth trying for the blue panels.i have just used it to repaint the seat of a matchbox K-47 trike
I have a pretty messed up R2, maybe I’ll give this a try if it works out well.
I have the same one needs some tlc.
RetroBlasting can you make a video on the vintage star wars character erasers?
When are we getting a thundercats review? Not to mention a MOTU review!
I think Broken Vader will be pissed off...
If you have an R2 unit that doesn't click anymore, where do you get the replacement collar? Can the original be repaired? Any help would be appreciated.
I know this is a long shot but I was wondering would you do a series on the kenner Aliens line loved those as a kid and would like to see what ones actually came out
I see a kitty cat
I also suppose now you might have a peter mayhem memorial video, please do.
When is part 2 coming?
Any chance you guys could do another livestream? I miss your livestreams. Maybe a livestream on 70s and 80s robot toys like transformers, gobots, starriors, shogun warriors, robotix, etc?
