Michael continues a restoration that's been long-awaited. A vintage R2-D2 figure from Europe!

Glad my suggestion helped. It looks a lot better with the top coat added. Cheers
Dave to the rescue, hope your doing well.
"Dome" was not built in a day! Thank you for caring for such a childhood treasure!!!
@@TheDing1701 YW! We all need a laugh every now and then! Toy-On!
It's great to hear you mentioning some of my other favourite channels. This droid is a bigger crossover event than Avengers Endgame.
Good luck with the rest of the restoration.
If ever you want to mess with Chrome or durable metallics again look around an online store called MicroMark. They sell a lot of wonderful hobby tools. One of the things they sell are some do it yourself electroplating kits. You lay down a base layer of a conducting paint, masking where you don’t want metal. Then run current to the paint, and paint the surface using a conductive brush that completes the circuit. Buffing between layers. It works surprisingly well, but is messy and time consuming (do not do indoors! Well ventilated area). There are different metal finishes available. I’ve seen some gorgeous Phasma helmets done with it.
Also, quick tip if you are trying to detail paint on chrome, and getting that glare problem. Put on a pair of polarizing glasses. Sunglasses or range glasses. The Polaroid on the glasses will eliminate most of the light scattering so you can see what you are doing.
Your process sounds like the way to go.
rxz4140 This is a decent video showing how it works. It’s called brush plating. The one thing the gun doesn’t quite explain is he puts down copper first to give a better base to then plate over. And get better results.
Andrew Taylor No vid?
I always knew this video would come at some point, Michael. You're good who takes time and don't rush stuff. Glory to you from me.
Set one up for Dave and he just knocks it down - that guy’s money. You all do great work - really can’t wait for the final product!
Thanks. Blush.
There's so much trial and error to these kinds of projects, and I really appreciate all of you out there doing the legwork and sharing w/us. Definitely looking forward to the de-yellowing, as that's the challenge I've faced over the years re: finally getting an R2-D2 for my vintage collection. Those re-pro stickers look so glaringly out of place stuck onto a yellowed body.
Fantastic video. The 1978 nine year old version of myself opening my early bird set NEVER would have imagined where we are today with these cherished toys & your dedication on this project. Thanks for opening my eyes.
Looks like William trusted the right person to restore his astromech in my opinion. Things like this are not just helping him but a lot of us who are trying to do similar work. Great stuff, man.
In this type of tasks, you need all the patience possible, because if you don't, it's going to turn really bad at the end result. Thanks for the journey, Michael!
So much effort and heart invested! Wonderful! This happens, when the right poeple work together!
Glad to see this video, it’s a testament to your devotion to the hobby
Thanks for sharing, Michael. I'm going to get a dr. pen and finish my R2 now!
Have no doubt Mike would do anything and everything he could do to do it right. EXCELLENT WORK!!
Your attention to detail and patiance is paying off. I am going to refer to this video next time I get a little impatient with my model airplanes. Thanks for what you do.
This is the toy community coming together sharing knowledge and experience and I love all three channels ! William will be impressed with analog toys retroblasting and toy polloi on the job
Still have my original R2 from 78. My mom put my initials on the bottom of R2's foot. Still there to this day. :)
Never wash it off, keep that memory alive.
That dome is looking great, well done.
Glad to see this video! Hate to say it but the chrome metalized people looks to have done a half assed job. I won’t have let the dome leave the shop looking like that. Good thing you’re creative!! Looks great so far!
Michael,
That is a lot of work and expertise being put into that little droid! Very cool for you to be restoring that for him and for you doing your absolute best to do the best job you can. That is awesome. I know the final product will look amazing. Thanks for the update.😁👍
Bill
Droids take a bit of work, but it is worth it in the end.
This channel is so relaxing .
Thanks 🙏
I love those silver and gold metallic pens, I use them for my gundam model kits for fine details. Patience truly is the key here!
Looks fantastic!
I'm really glad that you're taking your time. I think your patients is paying off, based on the photos you've shown. I completely agree that the VAC-Metalized finish was far too textured and the Molotow pen was a great call.
Quality over quickness.
Good job Michael, I have no doubt it will look awesome!
This figure is too exciting to pass up in any condition with a reasonable price. Him, 3po and Bespin Luke.
Looking good. Looks like fun work.
Crazy man, awesome work. Good luck with the de-yellowing.
I am so glad you are doing this. I have been waiting for forever. I love your videos!
I really enjoy the technical videos you produce. Very informative!
Chrome looks solid. Good job
It's a simple figure but R2D2 is one of my favorite Kenner Star Wars figures
Awesome video!
A true labor of love. It is precisly your passion and pursuit of perfection to get it right that keeps us rooting for you. Keep it up!! And clearly the finished R2 will be worth the wait.
Looking good.👍
Keep up the great work and thanks for making the great videos of toy collecting and other stuff
Yay retroblasting!!! The project is coming along nicely, looking forward to the next update.
Great video! Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
A childhood survivor is always worth it.
Super job so far and seems like the dome would be the hardest part due to the chrome. The idea to add a layer on top seems to have worked. It looked a bit smoother to me and, as you stated, it should actually protect the other chrome finish underneath. I paint 28mm D&D minis and I am no Rembrandt but the more you paint, the faster and better you get. Frustrating at times but overall relaxing and enjoyable when you get a batch of something painted. Can't wait to see what's next for R2! Makes me think of when Threepio said, "Thank the maker. This oil bath is going to feel..." Well, you know! ;-)
This is amazing and the process is a crazy effort! O_O You're amazing, Micheal!
It has been a while, but I think it's starting to look awesome! O for one am looking forward to seeing the completed figure. My childhood original is in way worse condition. R2D2 has a special place in my heart as my childhood R2D2 was my first Star Wars figure ever.
I love those markers I always use them for modelling.
I opened my Molotow brush up and sprayed mine and it looks awesome.
Such awesome work.
That's good to know about the chrome pen. I'll probably never be able to get a Super Powers Cyborg but I did get the new funko 3 3/4 Teen Titans Cyborg and painted it with the chrome pen. It looks awesome.
Have you tried airbrushing alclad ii polished aluminum? You have to put a decent amount of gloss coat down, preferably a dark color so it gets that mirror look. You can then clear-coat it with Omni automotive clear coat. I have done this with several of my slot and retained the chromed look.
Thanks for the update, it looks like you are well on your way to a successful restoration. Can you send links to the products that you used for chrome and blue paint?
www.umarkers.com/paintmarkers.htm
Exhale as you apply the paint, I paint figures that are based on pennies and that helps with brush control
I eagerly awaited this video, and I'd almost given up on you doing it. Thanks for delivering on this! I used citadel ardcoat (a brush-on clearcoat) recently on some GI JOE color repainting, and it gave it that original shiny look. It would probably give you an original shiny finish on the blue panel parts of the head. Just make sure that the paint is dry before using the ardcoat. It does work very well. If you have any reservations, just find an old R2, paint a single blue panel on the head, let it dry, then try the ardcoat on it to see if you like the results. Either way, looking forward to the next part of your restoration, Michael!
Wow, bummer about the vac metalizing... Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Toy Polloi is awesome.
Agreed!
Thanks!
@@retroblasting Thanks!, likewise
Those chrome pens are great. I’ve used them on transformers and matchbox cars with great effect. Good luck :-)
Odd that you were told that blue colour was applied by electroplating, there are not any blue metals. Chrome has a blue hue to it but it has a basic silver colour overall. The closest I can think that actual colours get applied by something similar to electroplating, is anodising, but I don't imagine Kenner masked and anodised just those little spaces in the dome more likely that it is paint or print of some sort like the eyes on the vac metalised Death Star droid. Vac metallisation is actually aluminium, and as a metal, aluminium does get anodised with colours, but not really in cases like this, my money is mostly put on paint. Try some tested paint removing tricks on a worn artoo to see if you can paint strip the blue
Yes its just paint. Try this, but let it sit a couple of days. www.umarkers.com/paintmarkers.htm
Boy have I been waiting for this 😁
Next you can work on 'holy grail' Death Star Droid and Threepio who have become badly tarnished. I'm sure that would be a nightmare, lol!
If you ever need detailed brush work, let me know. Love your Star Wars videos...and everything else!
I tried that Molotov with the Captn. Phasma figure - what I didn't know was that it had to cure for so long. So I gave up on that. Now it's back in the line to try again :)
Good things come to those who wait😁
I saw the remote-control R2D2 on the table. I have one minus the controller, from when I was a kid. Trying to figure out a way to retro fit to working order.
I don't know if it got through before, but one time in Virginia, I took a silver ring to a lapidary and they plated it gold in a machine. If you found a place like that, maybe they could plate it silver. But it looks like you found a solution already.
Chrome Dome😜
It will be cool once you get it all finished to see how it turns out looks like it's going to be awesome!
You can use 2K clear coat over Alclad Chrome which allows it to be handled regularly with no loss of shine/reflection .
Any chance of a link for the metallic blue pen please as I'm currently working on my vintage large R2d2. Thanks in advance.
Great work as always.
And trust toypolloi to make a quality call. I've used his advice on most of my restoration projects.
👌
www.umarkers.com/paintmarkers.htm this should help you.
Cool👍
Toy polio is on it
I wonder if using a red light like in a darkroom when you try to paint the blue would make it easier to see? ...and a blacklight for redish colors. I never tried it but from years of being in darkroom the lights do really effect some colors.
I have a silver hawk quicksilver that I re chromed it looks good, but it took months to dry and still I need to work on touch ups.
I was waiting for this and I'm glad it's here
Hey Michael are you going to watch or did you watch the Mandalorian?
I was just curious about what you thought about it I've been hearing good things.
do you remember what tip size you got on the Molotow chrome pen? I don’t want to get one too small or one too big
I wish I still had my R2 and I the only one that had a marble stuck in the bottom hole? I don't know why we did that.
Hey Michael, big fan of your channel! Wanted to know your thoughts on the Mandalorian? Hope all is well dude!
makes me wonder if you could have buffed out the imperfections in the vacmetalization with a mild compound and super soft dremel pads like the ones baremetalhw uses..... im guessing you thought of that though
And to Michael's surprise, the fumes from R2's curing paint melted and discolored all of the other toys behind the glass...
-What would happen in the Twilight Zone version of this story.
I've vac metalized mine ... they were smooth like new 🤔
Do you do it yourself or go through a service?
@@mikeg155 went through a place ... got a couple of c3pos and a death star Droid done as well, just rocked up and paid cash to the guy who operates the machine haha
I LOVE you’re content. I also love you’re lovable grumpy personality. Keep up the GOOD FIGHT!
5:00 You could use tape as a mask so You could mistake without so much effort
Sup
What are you going to do about the COPPA ruling and the New UA-cam rules on for kid content? Just wanna know because this could and will affect anyone that talks about toys.
