You guys are missing the point. Some of these gadgets are designed for the elderly or people with less dexterity. Hence the left hand oil test.

You should do the left handed oil test on the "normal" methods you're comparing to. You may see the benefit in devices that you wouldn't have otherwise. For example, the danger of the sharp edge on the tuna can if you're using the lid to drain it with your oily left hand.

Yes, those gloves are advertised as “cut resistant” or “knife resistant,” but they are not pierce protective. The fibers in the gloves protect the glove from being *cut*. The knife, though, can still make its way between the material of the glove.
Seriousness aside, the way you worded this sounds like a buff effect in a game or something hahaha
While true, the remedy would essentially be wearing plate gauntlets. I think the knife resistant gloves provide enough protection that id be comfortable giving them to a novice and be reasonably safe as opposed to not wearing gloves at all.
@@joeldykman7591 I mean, plate gauntlets aren't all that practical to wear because of reduced dexterity, and difficulty in cleaning. Chainmail gloves on the other hand are relatively common in the industry, still offer decent dexterity, and are easy to keep clean.

Skinzit is designed to be used on whole fish fillets, not portioned fillets. I've seen heavy duty ones being used in wholesale fish markets to skin flatfish in less than 10 seconds with virtually no loss of edible product. Furthermore, skinning whole fillets is easier than skinning portioned fillets. The clam shucker is just a waste of money. Use a clam shucking knife while wearing a chainmail glove. The lobster shears can easily be replaced with a sharp pair of kitchen shears, which will be easier to sharpen once dull and has more utility. The tuna drainer is only useful for those who are highly accident prone (aka disabled, elderly, young kids) as there is the chance of getting a cut from the side of the can. The oyster shucker is the same with the clam shucker. Use a chainmail glove and a towel.

I can see the advantage of the tuna strainer if you want to avoid cutting yourself trying to get the sharp lid out.
Just use. a sieve... You probably has one in your kitchen.
I've always just used a magnet to take the lid out/lift it to the point of wiggling it out. I've never seen anybody else do it but it works well for me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@lillyb1312 Thats what I do as well.
@@ILubBLOfficial True, but it's much easier to get the lid out when the liquid is in there. You push one edge and the opposite end easily lifts out for you to grab. If you try to do the same when the tuna is compressed and liquid removed, it won't lift much if at all.
Also, some can openers are made to hold/remove the lid automatically. If you're then putting the lid back in to compress/drain, then this solves that.
I use the lid to strain and then use a magnet that is used to open the kitchen cabinet with cleaning supplies to pull the lid out.

With the tuna press, I think that would be super useful! Sometimes the metal on the lid is thin and it's hard to get an even press. Also, some can openers open from the outside so there's no sharp edges, and you can't use the lid to press the water out. As a bonus, not getting tuna water on my hands is a huge plus!
I feel like SkinzIt would be for whole fish lengthwise. Like you hold on to the tail and move up. Coz fish muscle structure on the cut they used would make it prone to mangling
Exactly my point
I imagine the only purpose of a tuna press is for people with really shaky hands or something like that, you might cut themselves on the sharp edges of a can. eitherway I always just crack the lid ever so slightly, then pour off the liquid, then fully open it
I just use a wire mesh colander that I dump it into.
X Exactly what I was thinking!
damn the fish got mangled
poor fish
Cause he doesnt know what he’s doing
Chase Jackson So you're telling me there's an advantage to using that gadget?
F Sandostoft Yeah at the seafood place i used to work at we could skin 100 fillets in the time it’s take a knife to do half as many and with no edible product wasted
everybody gangsta til the fish gets mangled
Dan Famosa is the best! He is so intelligent, creative, and a wonderful sense of dry or punny humor. His critiques on design could be applied to anything and be interesting and informative! KEEP BRINGING BACK DAN FOR MORE VIDEOS PLEASE 😊
ok so out of sheer curiosity I looked up the fish skinner. It worked well in the videos, but it was almost exclusively being used on whole filets, not portion sizes. It worked well to remove the bones and then the skin of both small and large lake fish. I think it's just the cut that he used that didn't agree with the way the machine works.
it's what happens when you dont read the instructions as often as these guys dont. i've lost count of the number of products dan has given a bad review to after he improperly used them, never having bothered to read the instructions to find out how the device in question was meant to be used.
16:14 "okay, don't give up"
I just love the fact that he just casually gave himself words of encouragement 😂
The tuna press has a purpose for two reasons I think Dan didn't think of.
Many people are transitioning to smooth edge can openers where you can't press the lid into the can.
You don't know what griminess was on the li before cutting it off, unless you wash the can before opening it.
I can see the tuna press as a product for someone with the smooth edge can opener or someone paranoid about contaminants in food and would thus rate it slightly higher, but not much higher. Also for a redesign I'd give it handles so you can press down with your body weight on the counter or over a sink or squeeze together two handles using your entire arm for leverage. Sorta like hedge shears or loppers for gardening/landscaping but have the handles removable.
The sharp edges in on the tuna can is an important fact. But just use a sieve, the tuna press is a useless product. Plus you should allways wash the can you pretend to open.
The smooth edge openers are the only thing I can really think of.
"Thank you, next" *looks at camera* I see what you did there
He should really create a category for storage. Finding where to put the weird gadget you bought online has always been my issue.
Still waiting for "50 people try to peal a banana".
You know someone will give up after 15 seconds, and someone else will use a hammer.
Pretty sure the a light tap of a hammer would work, but you have to chill the banana to below dry ice temps.
(Peal is to ring, peel is to remove a peel)
do the lobster shears offer any advantage over regular kitchen shears?
I actually think the tuna squeezer is sort of useful even if the design isn't perfect. I notice that every time I try to use the lid I lose more of the actual tuna than I'd like to, plus the lid can bend sometimes, and can openers can leave a sharp edge. If they tweaked it to give more mechanical advantage like those lemon juicers with the handle that gives more leverage, and had the can raised up more, I could see it being useful for kids who'se parents are worried about them getting hurt with the sharp lid, or people with dexterity issues.
I guess I want to ask is 1. If the concern is the sharp edge for children, aren't they already risking it just opening the can and taking the lid off before putting it in the device? And 2. If the parent is the one opening the can taking the lid off for the child, why wouldn't they just go ahead and drain the water? I know of no parent who would love another item to wash for no reason other to let a kid squeeze the water out of a can of tuna..
Regular shears would have the whole blade going deeper into the lobster tail, mangling some of it. This keeps the blade out of the tail meat.
recoil53 And it's a pulling motion instead of a pushing motion, which is easier to handle with a wet fish.
Regular shears have a higher risk of your hand getting cut on the shell when you move the shears forward.
There are much simpler designs for can strainers that have additional uses. I have a couple that sit in the can and you press down. They can also fit into/over cans to strain the liquid out. Great for canned vegetables when you don't require the liquid.

Mr. Formosa and others, those gloves you use are for resisting cuts and they work reasonably well at cuts. But when you are trying to avoid a puncture, those gloves have a greatly reduced effectiveness. Just a heads up. You need something like leather or a composite(like that glove but with a coating or blended in composite to avoid the weave from separating) glove to avoid puncture. This is from experience, not from a person with over heightened sense of self preservation. Although the gloves are good for avoiding the shards of shell that like to cut you.
It's a small touch, but I love how the pictures in the background always go with the theme of the episode in this series! Very fun.
put this guy in the thunderdome with alton brown. two men enter, one man leaves.

One thing in defense of the tuna press is that some can openers are designed to cut the top so that you can't really press down on the tuna. I have a device specifically for draining tuna because I have one of those can openers. The nice thing about mine vs the tuna press is that it's more like a cap instead of a container, so it can also be used on taller cans that you might want to drain (like beans, maybe).
Self-preservation SMART
