＜あらすじ＞
罪なく大宰府に流罪となり憤死した菅原道真。その祟りにより帝は御悩となります。
比叡山で勤行を行っている法性坊。その法性坊を師と仰ぐ道真の亡霊が現れます。
道真は法性坊に、朝廷から参内せよとの勅使が下るだろうが、その時は断ってほしいと懇願します。
しかし、法性坊は三度勅使が続けば参内せざるを得ぬと答えると道真は怒りの色を見せ炎の中に姿を消します。
勅使が重なり、牛車で参内する法性坊の前に火雷神を従えた道真が現れます。
法性坊は切々と諭すと道真は一転、牛車を宮中へと自ら送り届けます。
その結果、道真は天満天神の称号が下され、末永い太平の世が招来されたのでした。

＜Story＞
Kanshoujou (Sugawara-no-Michizane) is convicted of a crime he did not commit and is exiled to Dazaifu.
He dies there, and his angry soul makes the Emperor ill. In Mount Hiei the head priest Hossho-Bo, who Michizane respected as his master, is praying when the ghost appears.
Michizane says, “If the Emperor does not get well, a messenger will be sent to you to bring you to the palace. Please do not obey.” Hossho-Bo says, “If they come three times, I will have to go”.
Michizane’s ghost becomes enraged. He takes a pomegranate from the temple offerings and bites into it before spitting the fruit at the door. The door bursts into flames and the ghost disappears into the fire.
The Emperor does send for Hossho-bo and after the third visit of the messenger, the priest is on his way to the Palace. Michizane appears with the God of thunder and lightning.
The priest tries to persuade Michizane that he should be grateful for being able to live in the land of the Emperor.
Michizane’s ghost listens and changes his mind. He helps drag Hossho-bo’s vehicle to the Palace.
The story shows how sympathy and respect to Michizane led to long lasting peace in the world.
