Cowboy Hats... Things You May Not Know.

  • Some people think it is redneck to wear a cowboy hat, little do they know that the cowboy hat offers 60% more protection from UV radiation than the city slicker ball cap. While the average ball cap gives excellent shape to your eyes in the front your face it gives you little or no protection to your ears and neck. This is why in the summertime you see many outdoorsmen with white faces and sunburnt ears and necks, hence the name redneck really belongs to the city slicker that wears baseball caps out the sunlight. During the summertime you will see most people wearing a straw cowboy hat and it is best to get one of those that are well ventilated around the crown of the hat. During the wintertime it is hard to beat the felt cowboy hat. The most popular felt to construct cowboy hats is wool and the most costly and fashionable is beaver fur. A middle of the road rabbit fur hat can be acquired for around 150 bucks. I would like to give a special shout out Smithbilt hats out of Calgary Alberta Canada for supplying the samples shown in this video. ( www.smithbiltha... )

    You might be interested in an Akubra. They are 100% rabbit fur felt. They wear them both summer and winter in Australia and that is very harsh conditions. They last about 20 to 25 years to sometimes even a lifetime. Cost starts around $150.00

    I'm south of Cleveland, little place called Grafton its south west. My family all from the south "Tenn" to be in fact, had grown up there a few years ago. I have worked on a farm, i raised here in Ohio. I raised everything accept a Llama. I do now own my own flock of chickens. So in the summer i wear "Straw" and Winter "Felt". The looks i get amaze me, and i just tip the O'l hat and smile at them. I earn my spurs for the tings i do on the outside plus working on a farm, But! I wear mine for the same reason "Because i want too!" i own over 30 hats and about 19 pair of boots, one pair i use to take care of my flock of birds. People forget the great thing about the hat, It keeps the sun off your face and neck working, or even being outside. The Felt keeps my head warm also taking care of my flock plus i love it with my leather. Some forget the cowboy hat imo is the American way, and you can wear wtf you want. If you like it wear it, if someone ask, Tell them to try it them self. Keep wearing and stay country bud, been wearing them from Tenn all the way to Ohio, and i'll never put it down for no one.

    Good & educational video, David Sarti. The hat is a necessity, when working outdoors. The wide brim helps prevent sun damage & skin cancer. The wide brim is like an umbrella in the rain. +As it's said out in the far west, if your feet are cold, put on a warm-hat.

    Yeah, they won't be laughing at our cowboy hats when they have cancer on their nose and ears.
    We, on the other hand, will be just fine...

    don't you think a man talking about hats would know the difference between a red and white "Cap" and a "Hat"?

    Remember the Xs are different for every brand. Many years ago a XX was what a 20X is nowadays. There is no regulation on the Xs, kind of like the ratings on stereo equipment. Many off-brands have 20X hats that are junk wool.

    I very much enjoyed this video. I have a hankering for a hat, but as I'm a girl, I don't want a masculine hat. At any rate, a while back I was shocked to hear that fur is used to create felt. Once again, thank you for this most interesting video.

    Hats are much like an accent, what you wear and how you wear it, tells a lot of where you're from and sometimes what you do for a living.

    Great video, keep up the great job in educating the Adults. I am trying to do the same with my friends on western hats, western boots, genuine fur coats and hats- the advantage of wearing the furs. I just brought my Outback trading company straw hat for the spring and summer; the hat will keep you cool, sun protection and fashionable. I can agree with you that the western wear is considered the skin protection from the harsh elements.

      The "beaver" designation in this hat is a finish. It has a little beaver fur, but mostly rabbit. Kind of pricey for an 8X.

      I don't know if there is a horse that would haul my 380 lb butt around. I have been thinking about a cowboy hat for working in the garden in the summer though.

    • @dsarti1
      @dsarti1  10 років тому +2

      ***** a clysdale or belgen could haul a 600 pound man like it was nothing. but your problem would be getting on the horse. But if you use a cart like I plan on doing a cob size (small) horse will have no problem pulling 500 pounds
