Reviving the traditional art of handmade haberdashery, the women of "Paul's Hat Works" in San Francisco guide us through their century-old hat-making process, from custom measurement and blocking of the felt blank to hand-stitched finishing and the final flange. Avaloctus yep, I actually made an Indiana Jones fedora and it wasn’t really that difficult either, I only needed foam for the block, 40 dollar felt, ribbon from michaels and my grandma’s sewing machine and clothing iron

That was a beautiful video. I love the detail that goes into your hat making. And the fact that you use such vintage equipment is awesome. I'll be in your area in the spring - definitely stopping by.

That device which I can’t spell that you used to measure your
Customers head was also used to measure SFFD firefighters heads for their leather helmets.

Here in Newzealand we have a problem with possums. They are an introduced species that threatens native fauna and flora, basically a pest. People have various uses for the fur and pelts, but I think it would make good felt. I don't know if it's been tried, but it would provide a great alternative, and help the ecology.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for not using glue in your process. I cannot understand why glue has become acceptable for some hat makers.

A wonderful peek behind the curtains to see the magic which goes into producing fantastic hat. Good to see all the old equipment being used, if it ain't broke don't fix it. I have worn hats for many years but have only recently started my love affair with Fedoras'. I just know this is going to cost me lot's of money. It would be rude not to and life is to short and lets face it, a well produced hat is a work of art and a friend for life.

Can you help? Where to find a roll of that ribbon othwerise known as "back bows" that are placed between the leather sweatbands..im a startup doing reproduction hats but milliners sell it "per bow", i'm looking for a roll of that vintage grosgrain ribbon. Any heads up cheerfully accepted. PS yes ive checked ebay/etsy for vintage ribbon but nothing has turned up in over 6 months...except the WIDE ribbon that goes on the outside of a fedora.

LOL. Where do you you think they get the beaver felt from? The trap beavers and kill them for their pelts. Also hat making is one of the reason's that the beaver pelt industry was so large and profitable through most of US History.
