I have noticed that prices of basic everyday items like rice, oil, eggs, veggies on an average are more in these online apps than local grocery store. But ready to eat items, cosmetics and personal hygeine items are a little bit cheaper. Also there is an advantage that we get many varieties of items in these online stores. However since the prices of most basic groceries are more than offline stores, I only shop once in a while when I feel like trying out some new items.
The major issue is that all the grocery products listed on these online platforms or malls are taxable….but a normal grocery shop owner don’t even talk about tax (basically most of them unknowingly and unwillingly sell their products in black)…for the time being if our government don’t strictly regulate laws to macro and micro levels especially in this industry …I don’t think these online platforms will ever able to match the price the customer will get from normal shop or vegetable cart at road side.
One important aspect of kinara shops is that after you have developed a relationship with them, they offer to let you buy their items on credit and pay them later. Of course, you have the BNPL option in online apps, but they might penalize you if you are late in making the payment but kinara shops usually won't penalize you. Moreover, there are multiple grocery shops in your area but you only go to those shops where they have good customer service and knows your requirements inside out.

There is no need to deliver groceries to people's home because the grocery shop is within 100 meters reach to every household in India. Please stop trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist.
One way to increase profit is by manufacturing their top line products and make customers switch to their brand. Amazon does this a lot. Whenever a product is a top selling item, Amazon will produce a similar version from Solimo, AmazonBasics, etc. which are basically Amazon companies only and eat up the competition. Same is the ultimate goal of all these grocery companies. They want to own the distribution and start selling their own products. BigBasket already does this with Tata products.
One more thing to add outside india people free hoke parks jaate hai, holidays pe jaate hai.. India me log time pass karne grocery stores pe jaate hai... Many people are like chal iss bahane walk bhi ho jayegi..
I have also started online fruit and vegetables delivery app in Mumbai and was getting good orders ...but truly what ever is is saying is very true ..most of the common reasons ...very helpful if u are looking to startup in this area

Online and stores like reliance etc.: Same 1L pack Printed MRP 200 discount 5% so final price 190 even if they give 10% discount final price is 180 Why would anyone buy from them? All these big stores and online apps get their own MRP printed from the company itself
This will be successful if per-cqpita reaches 10k$ and have no time to go out to purchase grocery ( as it is not so important) this will be successful in cities like Mumbai, bnglr etc. For sure. Very very tough to crack in tier2 and 3 cities. This model seems to be successful in fast-forward 10 years. But now, it seems impossible.
Herd Mentality is killing our startup ecosystem. Indian's love to buy groceries off-line from local markets because for us it's a family event and we like to carefully choose our products by feeling it before buying. Market data is often manipulated and lacks actual customer sentiments.
Grocery Ecommerce apps should not target small kirana shops. They should Target the retail stores like demart, reliance smart etc. Why people don't mind standing for 1 hour in que in demart because most of their customers are bulk purchasers. People buy groceries for a month from these stores so they don't mind spending a hour standing in que once in a month. Secondly it is a kind of family outing. You will find popcorn stores, icecream stores in front of Demart. So these apps should find a formula to crack this and attract those customers by offering discounts or by reducing their procurement cost by directly purchasing from supplier or manufacturers. If you can provide a better deal they people will happily avoid those irritating ques.
Most of the startups are unable to drive BETTER VALUE to their customers - because they are so overwhelmingly busy to raise funding, and enhancing their own 'valuation'. To speak about recent failures here are the top 5 reasons: 1) SURGE PRICING is the biggest killer - i.e. inviting customers to shop, then charging you Rs. 25/- extra because they shopped with you! Weird? Ola failed thanks to surge pricing, BlinkIt is on it's way to be there! 2) Local kiranas, also delivers based on a phone call, irrespective of the amount that one shops for. 3) If you sell rice that's better quality than what's usually available - that's a stickiness for the customer to come back to you. Hence, CUSTOMER VALUE is something that's missing in most e-grocers. 4) All lawyers can't become Mr. Ram Jethamalani in one year! Recent college students wants to become a millionaire right from Day 1, without managing or working in any company or business ever! That's the 3rd attribute that leads to failure!
Stopped using Amazon Pantry twice the items were missing and there is no way to resolve the issue. 2 KG Ghee worth 1800 loss and another time almost worth 900. And mom strictly told me not to order more than 2 items per order in case of emergency only. I was spending around 12 to 15k monthly on Amazon pantry.
If it’s a recent issue contact customer care and if not resolved then proceed to consumer court. I faced the same with JioMart and after filing the case in case in consumer court they reached back and behaved very well that time and told we will refund the amount sir please take the case back 😂

Solution: What can be done is you can have a separate podcast channel where you can get completely as usual founder unfiltered and based on learning from that podcast create your learning on the main channel. Like this same video but you explaining everything and not more than 10-30 second clips of the founder. And credit the founder in beginning and end. What I am able to see is that all big companies like jiomart or you can say big basket are constantly buying small or big companies like ITC is goldmines for big basket because they can save tonnes of money in the manufacturing and they have already achieved economy of scale in that particular area they have the brand recognition also. Where blinkit and zepto don't have the product recognition yet. Blinkit(grofers) getting some brand recognition in the starting people started buying his aata dal at that time. But now all the things get washed away. Amazon or Flipkart are going great right now because they have very good logistics and these types of logistics which they are following are more economical also.
The main thing is profit margins. Zepto and blinkit will never make a lot of profits. Just like zomato and swigy the profits are low and the maintenance is very high. This mostly results in losses. Amazon is successful abroad because because most people order in bulk their entire month or months ration.
In India these big grocery shops won’t work,The street corner grocery shops are also doing door delivery .And accepting on line payments .Customers WhatsApp, the grocery list ,bang comes the grocery .at a much cheaper rate than charged by big stores
It's good But Sahil your voice is clear and audible but Akash voice competitively low. Its informative but long . Advise for 1.5x speed Me having E-commerce and grocery experiences as well found the topic as good one.
Big companies having advantage of getting more discounts and logistics cost and discounts recovered from hidden business technology. But local kirana is always having advantages of customers acquisition with credit facility and direct relationships with customers (Not depend on the temporary employees)
Just a few wild examples. A watermelon is purchased for around Rs7 to Rs 12 per kg... When it reaches cities the same 🍉 would cost Rs 40 to Rs 80 per piece.
Why can't grocery model function like ola uber Means why to make dark store why not just give order to local shop and charge commission from them Can anyone explain me this
The online deliveryof groceries is a wonderful concept and will stay despite competition & risks....as there's a huge market potential. Not everyone goes to a kirana shop or has a neighborhood shop....! No one really wants to travel a few miles to do grocery shopping...spend time & fuel in today's maddening traffic. With rising incomes and with both the husband & wife earning, there's little time for going to a offline shop...and one important point is that not all communities have a neighbourhood shop...as cities have expanded a lot ...
A differ here these startups are not going to serve everyone. Working population is going to grow a lot in future in India. They will have value of time. If I go to buy a whole month grocery. Then it would easily take 3-4 hours. Starting from going to shop and choosing products and then coming back. Additionally I will tired with this excercise. Hence. Add additional 1 hour. So in total you can say 5-6 hours on shopping. Which I can do easily in 30 mins online. Today it's not a need. But in coming 10-20 years it would be a norm and most stores will close
Average order value per customer if we say 350 and assume 18% margin on grocery products. They will get around 63 rs profit and let's say they give all this profit to delivery and packaging guy. It could be a break even point and once people become habitual and local market get spoiled they can easily set minimum order value for free delivery as 350-400 and all the orders above that will be a profit. On top of that these startups can also add high margin products to get more profit. Then how is it unprofitable business
Additionally it would reduce congestion on roads. People today block roads and etc for their shopping in local area. less people will go out randomly to shop. Then govt norm like banning use of plastic could be applied easily on big company compared to small shops. I feel we have bright future. And there are anyway too many grocery shops and very less making profits.
From my view these groceries startups like doodhwala, zepto, blinkit, contry delight and now swiggy also started instamart... Its too expensive and it really dont offer small things like If I want to buy 20rs toothpaste or just a normal pouch of ghee it's not there it provides only big options like starts from half kg of everything. And for 12 eggs they charge 120rs which from local shop we'll get for 60-70 .. on other side india is screaming that inflation is increasing.. And who will spend this much of extra money for small things.. Only areas in mumbai like hiranandani, total south Mumbai, delhi rich places are ones who use this.. and this is very small audience to target that's why any groceries startups in india will never succed too much its a very limited market.....
Aakash Agrawal looked so clear atleast in theory .. I guess these businesses dont succeed bcos there is no need .. India relies to do a lot of top up groceries and a very small percent is stock up unlike countries like USA where folks will drive miles to a store like costco , get hugely discounted stuff and use it ..weather supports perishable to live longer... hum phone karke manga lete hain thoda thoda and kirana stores are very happy to do that
Online grocery ordering is bullshit cause everywhere their is kirana shop and local market at walking distance today . It’s actually mess to open ur phone , open app , search item u need and than wait fr delivery guy to call u and than receive items. Its time consuming and nobody hav this much time nowadays they will just buy frm local shop in matter of seconds .
Sir i have seen local shops purchasing few products from Swiggy, Big Basket etc as they were getting better margin. Also, most of people purchase from local shops because of buy now pay later system without enrolling for any third party service i.e. udhaar From long back local shops are providing free home delivery either owner is going to deliver or they have employee at too low salary like 10-15k per month and these are not permanent employees so they dont take care of any health insurance or pf etc I think these things are giving more profit to local grocery shops
Thank you sahil Bhai maine aapke channel ko bahoot pahle se as learning use krta hun or is video se maine bahoot kuch Naya sikha hai i request you ki aap aishi or v case studies layen
@@rohithreddy75 yes, but rare products also have rare / fewer customers. Online is cheaper but it's not like from tomorrow people are going to order from random apps it's takes millions as backup on advertising so that people at least know that there is a another app in market
If you compare the business model of the traditional grocery store or grocery cart with the startups, you will realise that the grocery startups' business model is extremely inefficient and wasteful (more details below). The kirana shops are also able to provide 5-10 minute delivery for no extra delivery charge (and no transportation cost because of using bicycle). Within 5 minutes walking radius of most homes, there are 3-4 kirana shops, grocery carts and fruit carts. It is very convenient to go there and buy stuff. Also in emergency situations free and quick home delivery is available. On the other hand, the grocery startups need to spend much more money per order :- 1. Organizational cost (engineers, managers salaries etc.) 2. Lower level employees' (warehouse staff, security staff, delivery boys etc.) salaries 3. Server side cost to keep app and website running 4. Transportation cost first, mid and last mile 5. Perpetual customer acquisition cost due to lack of customer loyalty 6. Cost of tangible resources such as the real estate, delivery vehicles, computers, barcode scanners, bill printers, internet connection etc. This means that for every order, a lot of resources get wasted in the startup model as compared to the traditional model.
It's same thing but more complex. Eariler there used to be milkman. Fresh milk every morning but now with online app it's same but with extra added charges + wasteful packaging.
Grocery delivery USA Canada jaise countries me thik hai coz vaha pe population density utni nahi hai. Ind me lockdown me hi ye chal jata tha but ab itna nahi chalega. Cost ko kitna cut karenge, thode margin ke issues to honge hi.
Nowadays Genz was becoming lazier, which is why consumer online apps are becoming more and more and prices also converting more than normal groceries store if there can buy near the store they think no discount but if we get an online same item it will be some margin discounts so there think oh I can get discount in their mind and setting on the bed it is delivering and becoming more lazies!😔

In short i just wanna tell that reliance will take the market as they have enough funds who won't be able to compete against them. Believe it or not that's a fact. 🤷♂️
The traditional grocery will gery out eventually, similar to offline mobile recharge. Trust with local kirana and other factors will go irrelevant with further agressive discounts from these multiple players. Ecommerce is the way ahead for sure.

Before the delivery is picked up by the delivery boy from the pick up point, the products have to picked up and packed, does DELIVERY Cost include this labour cost?
I think this business can only survive as freebie app payment coupon. GPay, PhonePe, Amazon Pay. If a customer shop, recharge, miscellaneous payments ₹2000 or more. He will get discounted on grocery item. Customer needs the Value added against his money.
What non sennse - I live in Hyderabad. EVery single person I know here always order grocery items from Zepto/Blinkit, These companies may have taken credits from bank but sure as shot they arent going bust anytime soon.
Main fact is this is India not US, Canada or Europe. Here people depends on cultural status and mutual trust. More than 50% people still work in paddy field poor farmers and has no smart phone infact some of them didnt seen any ph in their life. So in that environment technology will failed. And if tech failed, E-commerce will not survive.
Generally I use big baskets for pet food and they deliver me after 2 day but for these they don't charge any delivery fee. And I notice that they are promoting product under their own FMCG brand like BB wellness,BB good diet for increase their margin.
I have 5 groceries app in my phone and when ever I make any purchase i just compare prices of the groceries in each and every app and then i place my order where the prices are lower........and i think this is the typical mindset of most of the middleclass people in India...
In india the completion is what the cheapest you can sell below MRP cause people are comparing your prices with Reliance store/ DMart etc. And India is a price sencitive market so the moment you cost more then car petrol they start driving to physical store's
If anything new or efficient a new startup pulls up, Amazon Flipkart Swiggy Zomato or even JioMart or Big basket will acquire them or replicate tha same model. Moral of the story : Don't enter into grocery delivery bizness

Yes & jio ne kirana stores ko hi apne saath leke chalna start kiya so they are getting much attention from people.
Business - Hardwork + Money 👍
This will be successful if per-cqpita reaches 10k$ and have no time to go out to purchase grocery ( as it is not so important) this will be successful in cities like Mumbai, bnglr etc. For sure. Very very tough to crack in tier2 and 3 cities. This model seems to be successful in fast-forward 10 years. But now, it seems impossible.
It is very important fool.
Herd Mentality is killing our startup ecosystem. Indian's love to buy groceries off-line from local markets because for us it's a family event and we like to carefully choose our products by feeling it before buying. Market data is often manipulated and lacks actual customer sentiments.
Are u from Udupi /manglore?? 😁
Bhai it’s fun for me to go for physical shopping…I am in IT..
Most of the startups are unable to drive BETTER VALUE to their customers - because they are so overwhelmingly busy to raise funding, and enhancing their own 'valuation'. To speak about recent failures here are the top 5 reasons:
1) SURGE PRICING is the biggest killer - i.e. inviting customers to shop, then charging you Rs.
My dream is to become Businessman ❤️❤️❤️
Bahut accha aur valuable video he
Aise hi aur videos banaye👏👏👍👍
Stopped using Amazon Pantry twice the items were missing and there is no way to resolve the issue. 2 KG Ghee worth 1800 loss and another time almost worth 900. And mom strictly told me not to order more than 2 items per order in case of emergency only. I was spending around 12 to 15k monthly on Amazon pantry.
If it’s a recent issue contact customer care and if not resolved then proceed to consumer court. I faced the same with JioMart and after filing the case in case in consumer court they reached back and behaved very well that time and told we will refund the amount sir please take the case back 😂
Thank you bhaiya . Very important video for business students like us . Plz do podcasts with business people 🙏🙏🙏

Honest Review from my side for this type of videos. Kindly take it positively! Live your videos.
Review: It looks like this channel belongs to the founder who is explaining in most of the part. But we subscribed to Sahil Khanna for his way of communication and teaching.
Also you could refer to your podcast channel here and get the interested audience to enjoy that content.
This would avoid repetition of content which is sometimes annoying. Also it will help in growth of both the channel!
Open for any further discussion. Thank You.
My idea is to make authentic content that’s why always ask other to give pov
@@IntellectualIndies Would like to hear your POV in next video on Papa News or somewhere! Thank You.
good learning, aakash, really appreciate your efforts in explaining the concepts

Me having E-commerce and grocery experiences as well found the topic as good one.
Big companies having advantage of getting more discounts and logistics cost and discounts recovered from hidden business technology.
But local kirana is always having advantages of customers acquisition with credit facility and direct relationships with customers (Not depend on the temporary employees)
Great work sir needs more video like this loots of learnings ♥️
Just a few wild examples. A watermelon is purchased for around Rs7 to Rs 12 per kg... When it reaches cities the same 🍉 would cost Rs 40 to Rs 80 per piece.
Superrr knowledge video... I am from NITIE & I know how much content you delivered
Honestly going to mall and purchasing is more better than doing it online
Online product in photos look different and when we order it looks different
Exactly
I will always buy groceries from my sabjiwala. Support local vendors than these big people. They are working for their daily bread.
True. It is one way of supporting our own community and local economy
Why can't grocery model function like ola uber
Means why to make dark store why not just give order to local shop and charge commission from them
Can anyone explain me this
Thats my also question
The online deliveryof groceries is a wonderful concept and will stay despite competition & risks....as there's a huge market potential. Not everyone goes to a kirana shop or has a neighborhood shop....! No one really wants to travel a few miles to do grocery shopping...spend time & fuel in today's maddening traffic.
With rising incomes and with both the husband & wife earning, there's little time for going to a offline shop...and one important point is that not all communities have a neighbourhood shop...as cities have expanded a lot ...
So informative and well presented video. Keep making more
I have 4 ids of Zepto
But still I frequently order every 3/4 day
A differ here these startups are not going to serve everyone.
Most stores won't close. That's for sure.
Vibrancy of a Vegitable and Fruit market is unmatchable , Online sellers don't have any answer to this.
From my view these groceries startups like doodhwala, zepto, blinkit, contry delight and now swiggy also started instamart... Its too expensive and it really dont offer small things like
If I want to buy 20rs toothpaste or just a normal pouch of ghee it's not there it provides only big options like starts from half kg of everything.
Very true and even prices of individual items are more.
I prefer online ,food or grocery, saved so much time n money through discounts.
Good academic interview. Appreciate if you do more like this.
Online grocery business will never pickup. You can't beat the bond between a kirana owner and his customers.
Amazing Video & Audio ❤️ Sahil Bhai.. Content as usual is great 👍
Sir i have seen local shops purchasing few products from Swiggy, Big Basket etc as they were getting better margin.
Also, most of people purchase from local shops because of buy now pay later system without enrolling for any third party service i.e. udhaar
From long back local shops are providing free home delivery either owner is going to deliver or they have employee at too low salary like 10-15k per month and these are not permanent employees so they dont take care of any health insurance or pf etc
I think these things are giving more profit to local grocery shops
I really like sir's analysis of grocery market.
Liked your content.
Thank you sahil Bhai maine aapke channel ko bahoot pahle se as learning use krta hun or is video se maine bahoot kuch Naya sikha hai i request you ki aap aishi or v case studies layen
Buying offline is good because proper quality & quantity even online don't give expiry date product it will not replace
Please ap apne videos me captions add kiya karo.
For a new player its next to impossible, cause in west both partners are working so they find it convenient to order and pay extra 5-10 % above MRP.
You can sell things which are not available in nearby locations. Its cheaper to sell online than in stores.
On the other hand, the grocery startups need to spend much more money per order :-
1. Organizational cost (engineers, managers salaries etc.)
2. Lower level employees' (warehouse staff, security staff, delivery boys etc.) salaries
3. Server side cost to keep app and website running
4. Transportation cost first, mid and last mile
5. Perpetual customer acquisition cost due to lack of customer loyalty
Nowadays Genz was becoming lazier, which is why consumer online apps are becoming more and more and prices also converting more than normal groceries store if there can buy near the store they think no discount but if we get an online same item it will be some margin discounts so there think oh I can get discount in their mind and setting on the bed it is delivering and becoming more lazies!😔

we should let some business be for low IQ person. Those who can't go to IIT IIM also have a right to earn in life
Wow, Pragmatic and STANDS OUT
I feel so proud we have Indians who give us this kind of knowledge 🤍✌️
In short i just wanna tell that reliance will take the market as they have enough funds who won't be able to compete against them. Believe it or not that's a fact. 🤷♂️
Because start ups require innovation. Online managing retail chain can't be called innovation. Believe it or hate it, thats the truth
The traditional grocery will gery out eventually, similar to offline mobile recharge. Trust with local kirana and other factors will go irrelevant with further agressive discounts from these multiple players.
Ecommerce is the way ahead for sure.
Haan discount dete rho or last mein bankrupt ho jao
DMART is a good example of discount adoption. If people can switch to dmart, an additional & better comfort is a must go.
Online Khali tier 1 city ke chochle hai Bhai tu abhi tak kitna grocery online order kiya

22:08 Amazon fresh and swiggy is the best for me
Aur jab kahi discount Mila to wahi se kar liya
Waise freecharge ke liye mujhe bohot bura lagta hai maine almost 95% recharge 100% cashback ke sath he kiye hai lekin jab recharge karna hota hai phone ka to Amazon se he kar leta hu
Chote kirane waalon ki baddhua hain jiske chalte online grocery fail ho rahi. 💯
Agar koi apna grocery ki shop ya Mart open kar raha hai to wo aPna margin kaise increase kar sakta ??

The biggest problem of these online store are more options in groceries

I have 5 groceries app in my phone and when ever I make any purchase i just compare prices of the groceries in each and every app and then i place my order where the prices are lower........and i think this is the typical mindset of most of the middleclass people in India...
Me area me bahut log blinkit Big basket zepto mangate hai kyunki mera shahar delhi ncr me he Gurugram all grocery apps work here😊
In india the completion is what the cheapest you can sell below MRP cause people are comparing your prices with Reliance store/ DMart etc.
