Wall mounted toilets in Germany are only slightly more expensive than floor mounted toilets (which have basically been phased out for new construction). You can get a mounting frame with concealed tank including toilet seat from Geberit (which is the most common brand) for altogether less than US$500
Obviously you can spend much more for their fancier versions, but its not necessary. Geberit systems usually last decades with little maintenance.

As a master plumber I don't recommend any type of those new wall mount toilets with carriers and tanks in a residential dwelling. If the bowl or parts ever cracks or breaks you will have a hell of a time finding replacement parts. Or if company goes out of buisness will need to reroute plumbing. Not worth it to me. Just keep it simple I say.

      Hi, our old (1950/1960's)
house has the wall hung toilets with the tank above it; which were put in at a time when workmanship and quality mattered. Do you know of a trustworthy brand, due to the city sending out notices for everyone to get water saving toilets? I really hate to even replace them. Plus I have a really overweight family member and I am really not wanting to replace the toilets. Thanks.

    • @longiusaescius2537
      @longiusaescius2537 Рік тому

@Ms Buttercup I would keep them
If they have to be removed look at installing a commercial tankless toilet, Be warned that the commercial toilets need bigger diameter water supply lines however.
Vacuum toilets from a company like AcornVac are also an option

As a general plumber I hate these wall hung toilets. I’ve probably removed as many of these as I’ve fitted. Cannot get replacement parts (can’t use alternatives in many cases), can’t access flush pipe that goes into pan or see if all is ok and not leaking. Changing parts can be very fiddly and difficult as access is so tight through the button panel. Then add these mechanisms use flimsy plastic rods which control the flush - they can quite easily come off or break. I refuse to fit wall hung toilets, the only time I do is through sites where it is out of my control to talk customers out of it.
Honestly just get yourself a regular toilet. Maintenance is straight forward. Parts are readily available. They last a long time without requiring a plumber to come fix something. There are many dozens of styles, shapes, colours and sizes to choose from.
Wall hung toilets are balanced on two not so thick metal rods. Which are secured by a couple of grub screws to tighten them to the rods. Then you have a chance of the ceramic splitting. Not worth the risk to me not in the long term.

I'm seriously considering one because my 2nd bathroom is only 45" wide and a wall-mounted toilet would give me more clearance between the front of the bowl and the opposite wall. Even though the wall-mounted toilet is more expensive than a floor-mounted one, it would be cheaper than moving the wall. What brand do you recommend?

The floor mounted toilets are a bit of a gimmick, I would never choose it if it was not for the better half wanted it. I have done up 4 bathroms in in our house and all toilets was changed to wall mounted. A bit of a pain to install as the frame has to be mounted VERY solid to avoid any kind of movement and the wall behind had to be redesigned somewhat. But they look good and it's easier to clean. Well at least we haven't gone full japanese with electronics and that useless stuff..

In Europe the problem with wall hung toilets exist in tank and toilet mounts. While Germany may have this in place is not a standard as digging into a wall of either stone or brick isn’t economical to hide tubes nor is it strong enough to support the porcelain. The wall hung toilets is nothing more than a recent trend and not what is taking place across Europe as apartments and otherwise were built many years ago. Don’t let your father agree to Europe standards, be argumentative that’s better

Really interesting. In the UK we import them from Europe and we find them for £180 in the shop, to include the frame and cistern and all the workings, but without the toilet pan (ceramic part you sit on). So with a cheap pan you can get the whole lot for about £350 which based on what you are saying is a lot cheaper than in the US.

If the wall carrier is installed correctly and you can stand and jump on it and it doesn’t move, you won’t have to worry about the tile. The tank parts will have to be replaced someday as with any toilet. Those blue tablets will wear out the gaskets in the toilet tank. I don’t recommend them.

Yep, I agree that those tank toilets used in 99.9% of residential private homes (mine included) can be a problem as you stated. I also realize that from experience. That's why I prefer a commercial type tankless toilet (wall mounted) of course, but with a flushometer valve on top back of toilet instead of a usual tank. Those are powerful & get the job done with a single flush. Of course they are heavy duty & require larger pipes of at least 1" diameter" for the plumbing system to handle the high water pressure source & they are noiser, but I don't mind.

how often do wall mounted toilets need repairing?

@danielpilachowski2424, they are no different to repair than a floor mounted toilet if installed correctly.

How does a wall mount toilet vent out?

Your plumbing system should be vented. Either the wall hung toilet is vented individually or tied to the whole house system.

I think this is the first time we've heard Jordan's name... so Hi Jordan.
Jim, could you do a video on waterless urinals? I am starting to see them at a few service stations. I would be tempted to put it in my house If I knew it wouldn't stink. Have you ever seen one installed in a home?

@ACoustaDC, waterless urinals are great. They work by a cartridge that’s installed in the drain. There is a chemical in the cartridge that keeps the smell away. The only problem is that people will take a bucket of water and dump it into the urinal and that destroys the cartridge. Then the cartridge has to be replaced. I have never installed one in a home. Matter of fact, I have installed only one urinal in a home but I have repaired several flush valves on urinals in homes. Waterless urinals have no water connection. Always good to hear from you. Happy New Year.

I'm not a plumber, I'm in fire sprinkler and alarm systems, but I do work with plumbers and electricians. We had these at my employment for a while, but they got removed as the acidic nature of urine was causing the old cast iron drain piping and steel fittings on the sewer lines to corrode at an alarming rate. Also with the cartridge - its a vegetable oil-based substance so urine will sink down through it and into the drain pipe through a 'p'-type trap. The oil eventually creeps out and down the drain, too (why you have to replace the cartridges regularly). And yeah, they can smell up a bathroom. The ones in our office building got replaced back to water-saving flush urinals, both building maintenance and tenants are glad it happened.

i just bought a new build and i want wall mounted toilets, but my family is skeptical about them working well, do they have any reason to be? luckily there's no real extra installation cost in my case because the house is being built from scratch. so it's just something that needs to be installed. thanks!
