A quick look at Fender's CD-60 Dreadnought acoustic guitar. Theme music 'Mustang,' from my album, 'Warbirds,' by Harpaxe. Available from Amazon & i-tunes.
Insightful as always. Thanks for being the wise soul and teacher that so many of us have always hoped we would meet along the way, whether beginning or advanced.
I could sit back and listen to him talk about guitars for hours. 😁 I've seen many videos of John playing guitars and the conclusion I came to is that he makes even cheap guitar sound premium. Makes me wonder if an expensive guitar will really make a difference? I think a good player like John will. Not much to do with guitar. Like he says, "when you go into a guitar shop, you buy a guitar and not a price ticket." 😀
I needed a second acoustic and went to my local guitar store strictly to buy an Epiphone DR100 - while I was waiting for the guy to grab the Epi from the store room I picked up the Fender CD60 and started to strum. Long story short, I came home with the Fender, and I love it!!
A delightful gent and a good review. The best advice I received was to go into the store and play it to get a better idea if the CD 60 is what I want to invest in.
I bought a used one (CD 60SCE Mah) here in china and it was a mess but only $120. It looked like it was a factory reject with parts (pickup, preamp, tuners) from other used guitars but the body was spotless. I had to file down one fret and am in the process of setting it up - gradually lowering the action. But nice project guitar. It sounds beautiful.
Hello.I like your calm and patient teaching style very much, especially your attitude towards cheaper instruments.Problem with a modern musicians is that they are looking at the name on the headstock too much.We all know that american made Martin is better sounding and better made then chinese made Fender, but the difference in price is very important in these days economy. I personally like well made cheap guitars. .With them you don't need to worry about humidity etc.... I own a CD 60 CE Sunburst and i love it. If you dont compare it too much....on it's own it sounds fantastic. If someone would give anyone expensive guitar as a gift i don't think they would mind, it's a whole another story))))) God Bless.
Good to here your story. With 7 grand children it has never seemed wise to have anything too expensive lying around the house! I did once have a Fylde acoustic and all I did was worry about it so eventually I sold it.
I have this guitar, and have played it for over 10 years. I bought a Taylor, and as crazy as it sounds, I felt like I was "cheating" on my Fender every time I played it.. Sure, there are better guitars out there, but for the money, these play and sound great.
@@JohnCouplandguitar You also cut a hole for a pickup to turn it into an electro acoustic. Was this a successful conversion and how did it sound as Im thinking of doing the same modification. Thanks
@@graemewakerley4062 Yes Graeme it worked perfectly although I have been doing such mods since pre-amps were invented. On high gloss guitars there is a slight danger of the finish cracking as you cut the hole so I reinforce the edge with tape. Matt finished guitar are more forgiving.
Got a used one today so shiny you can shave yourself. Very classy nice solid inexpensive accoustic want to get a Martin or Gibson some day. but the Fender is here to stay gonna hang out with my 3 Strats.
I enjoyed the review. I bought a Fender DG60CE. I wonder what’s the difference between CD60 and DG60 apart from being electro acoustic. Oh also I agree with you on the action, because I am more of an electric guitar player and I find it a struggle to play this acoustic guitar so I had to change the strings to a super light gauge and lower the action a little bit. Again thanks for sharing your talent and videos. All the best!
A set of strings starting with an 11 would be ideal. Good makes are Martin, Earthwound, D'Addario, and Fender. 12s would give a better tone but are more difficult to play. 10s give a thinner sound but are very easy to play.
The neck angle was fine although when I received it the head was rattling around inside the sound box! I had just sold a guitar and the guy then asked if the Fender was any use to me. Just how it would be out of the box is therefore a question I cannot answer. I later sold it on but it turned out a decent enough guitar.
I would say that of the two the Fender is slightly better. Bear in mind that all guitars are individuals so, if your Covid restrictions allow, go to a guitar store and try two or three of the same model.
Hi, I'm planning to buy a new guitar, is it good to buy the fender cd60s all mahogany or the new yamaha fa-125ce? I'm struggling almost 3 days now. Thanks
The HB has less volume, it is really a parlor guitar. Its acrylic bowl also has a pungent smell which I thought would wear away but it never did. I eventually gave the HB to a charity shop so I would recommend the Fender.
you even cut off one chunk of the guitar to show us the kind of wood it is made of, thats passion bro
Has so good at reviewing guitars
I think its the leftover piece after fitting the pickup onto the guitar
John, you make any guitar sound great lol. Beautiful touch....

you include so much info. A good luck at the guitar, a sam;le of the wood and the sound. I really like you man Im gonna watch more of your stuff.
Welcome aboard David.

Thank you so much for that. All guitar reviews should be that useful and concise!
Glad it was helpful Robert.

welp you're my new dad
A fantastic clip as always and very educational keep them coming, John.
Wow much better video quality, John !
I treated myself to a new camera, a Zoom Q2n. It has good mics so I no longer need to record the sound track separately which makes life easier.
Just got mine. Needed little tuning. Good base sound. Plays well. Only thing is I don’t like needing to wipe smudges off because so shiny.

Great review keep up the good work
3.05 exact first four chords of Hothouse Flowers 'Hallelujah Jordan'. Nice.
While I would love to say that this proves granddad is really with it, I confess it was just a fluke.

The CD series seems to have replaced the DGs. I did review a DG21 and it was very similar to the CD-60.

John Coupland cheers For the reply. Really appreciate it.
...simply just a nod to Mr. Coupland.
RESPECT!!
Thanks MS.
Wow...
Great video! Thanks a lot :))
Glad you liked it Jenny.
You should review a Redding one day. They're really good and cheap.
That would be good but the only way to plan my reviews would be to buy, buy, buy. Most of the gear comes as the result of swaps and friends.
good vid mate, thank you
Glad you enjoyed it Daniel.
Always wondered what mr doubtfire sounded like ‘help is on the way dear...’ lol jokes aside good review :)
Hope if someone says, 'Can you pick up a Martin', he doesn't misunderstand!
This thing looks like something Johnny Cash would use.
Yes, definitely his style.
@@JohnCouplandguitar Speaking of Johnny Cash, when you can, can you review his signature Martin D-35, in advance, thanks.
@@shinyredpaintworkproductio7969 Well it's my birthday in two weeks but I think a new pair of slippers might be more likely!

tnx for the video! you seem such a nice person! cheers from Turkey, i guess i m going to buy this one!
How much setup work done ?Outta the box? Action at 6/64
5/64 ? Was neck angle proper from factory ?

@@JohnCouplandguitar can you suggest me a guitar of your choice (a affordable one if it's okay:)

my fault, i mean fender fa-125ce
Wow
Your really good
It is amazing what 50 years of practice can do.
Which strings would you recommend for this guitar? I have one and it needs a replacement
I would use a set 11's on most of my guitars. Fender, Martin, D'Addario are all good but my favourites are Ernie Ball Earthwoods.

If you are planning to play in public or do some home recordings then the 125's pick up will be useful. If it is possible try to play before you buy.
Ok thanx. Actually I'm struggling between yamaha and fender. Any recommendation?
Not really, both make good quality instruments although you may be paying more for the Fender name than Yamaha's.
Ok. Thanks for the info.

Is harley benton 850 hbo bk better than this guitar?

Nothing in particular, just a generic country intro.
John Coupland sir if you have the time could you send me the tab
can someone share the chords played here
Hi Lina, I have been asked this so many times I made a video to explain them. Video link

Does this come in a natural finish?
Yes, in both this model and also with a cutaway and a pick up.

I played one in a store...sounds flat.
My son tried this, the basic Epiphone and the Yamaha F310. He bought the Yamaha.
