I don’t care how “rehabilitated” that guy is, he still has that crazy look in his eyes.
He’s passionate about what he does
Isn’t he the “loco” from that Key & Peele skit? 😂
Hes a fake
He has that look in his eyes because he is remembering all the tough situations he went through growing up. That aggressiveness came back out for a bit when he was talking about the subject. You people are too busy making fun of the way he talks to understand. And yes he is reformed because he’s doing positive things with his life now. (Unlike some of you fools just talking sh*t)
It's called cooooookkkkkkaaaaaaa
The streets are filled with bs, let’s put that level of energy into better jobs and the betterments of our people.

My grandparents were zoot suiters in east la my parents, also from Maravilla. My brothers didn’t have a chance.. but me.. I MADE IT first generation to graduate high school and work for the county to be able to give back to my community in east la. I agree with all the comments here that have said that the streets don’t define you… YOU DEFINE YOU
I grew up in those streets, had about six gangs around my neighborhood, many friends killed. Graduated high school in 1993. But never had to be “aggressive”, got jumped a few times, but decided never to join a gang. Many did what I did, decided to ignore the peer pressure, the bullying, the chase downs, and kept clear of it. It was always a choice, I had a gun to my head at 16 years old, still said “no”. Had friends join and die, had friends become cops and die, but we all had a choice.

There’s a big difference homeboy, these guys are from there you just lived there, nobody wants to interview little Mario who stayed inside all day 😂
You’re not a 2nd or 3 rd generation gangster that’s the difference . He’s talking about people whose parents and their parents were into the streets . You sound like a regular civilian so of course you didn’t have to be aggressive 🤦♂️
I agree. I grew up in the hood and knew from a young age that I wanted something different. They called got me a lame and “wannabe white” for wanting to join the military to use it as a stepping stool to get into a career later down the line and live in a nice gated community. But it’s a hell of a lot different if your parents were gang members. The influence is rooted even deeper and some people force it on their kids.

I've met Richard when he was doing a performance at Inner-City Arts. We all talked to him about how life was growing up in different generations. If it wasn't for homeboy industries he probably would have been heavily in that life still. He's a phenomenal person now.
Its easier to "be hard" then deal with foo's who think your kindness is weakness. It takes a lot out of you!!
I'm so sick of the excuse of " I'm just a product of my environment". No you're a product of your choices. There's plenty of ppl who grew up in the hoods of LA who made it out and never got involved with gang life. Generation after generation all these people do is make excuses for their poor choices.
Cause they pussy and had other option .. dont speak what u dont know
You wrong homie unless you grew up in a soft neighborhood but when your 10 - 12yrs gangbangers don't make it easy for you to just stroll in and out the neighborhood like leave it to beaver lol
Just say you never lived in the hood. You actually don’t know what it’s like. You might think you know. But you really don’t.

I grew up in the maravilla projects. Many gang members were super talented but chose a life in the hood selling drugs. Had they only gone to college, they wouldn’t be spending life in prison. I have many awful memories of drive by shootings and violence. It was a hard life that I don’t wish on anyone. One thing it taught me was hard work. Once I was out, I ran and never looked back.

When you born and raised into that life the only thing you can do is embrace it

Some PCP, Lovelys, PDawgz, Coco Puffs, poppin' acid tabs, doin' hot rails, drinkin' Everclear, MD 20/20, 40s of Mickey's, goin' to ditching parties, and killin' train yards w graffiti wuz juz part of every day life baq then. Richard has got to be one of the nicest most humble celebs I’ve ever met. Him, Mike Tyson and Anderson Silva
I was a gang intervention worker back in the 90's. The gang culture back in the days was tied heavily to lack of economic opportunities and racism. But a lot has changed since. Gang banging for me has never made logical sense, even less today. I mentored a young man from Maravilla projects who tried to get out. He enrolled in a university and absolutely aced his first year. He was gunned down during summer break, standing in his front door step because he was trying to get out. Tragic.
That’s horrible, and a sad reality that used to happen in the 90’s.

Every hood is the same , when you moved around you see the similarities, everyone thinks they are the hardest toughest etc. but, they are all more similar than they would like to admit. And in understanding this it offers opportunity to grow out of it .
My grandpa ( may he rest in peace 🪦💐🕊️) use to be a pachuco in East LA back in the 1940’s during WW2 and believe me he had a very nice suit like the Red Devil Zoot Suit style which happens to be his favorite with high-waisted, tight-cuffed pegged trousers, and a long coat with wide lapels and wide padded shoulders, double loop zoot suit chain gold and silver color,a Jesus cross chain ⛓️💥 gold and silver color around his neck ( he had both colors of chains including his chain necklace gold and silver and certain suits he wears either gold or silver color), and red tando hat with a long feather 🪶along with a tattoo in his hand with a cross with three dotted stars ✨ on top, plus whenever he use to go clubbing every night either going dancing with the ladies or just listen that old school jazz music 🎶 he would take his favorite suit, but most of the time he would wear the Res Devil suit for special occasions like when he first met my grandma and wanted to make the first impression 😅😅😅, but the Red Devil zoot suit wasn’t the only suit he had no he had other zoot suits styles that he would take in clubs or a night in town especially since my grandpa liked to dress yes suits like the Mellow Yellow style, Classic Black, Jokers Wild Purple, Royalty Blue, Hypnotic style, Charcoal Plaid with Gold Thread, Tropical Tan, and Chocolate Brown Pinstripes, so now since it’s closer or should I say one months away from Halloween 🎃 I’m planning to dress like a pachuco in honor of my grandfather and the Red Devil style seems to catch my eye especially with my sunglasses 😎 to add a little flavor the only problem is that when he died he was buried with his favorite suit so now I’m gonna see if I can get my hands on the Red Devil suit except either I’m gonna keep the tando hat or add some Devil horns into the hat with my locs what you guys and gals think ????
Suit suit isn't a culture, it was a costume of rebellion behavior
It feels like I just hit 3 g’s of cocaine and under 30 minutes 😂
young men who grow up without a father are more likely to join gangs, but there are many other factors that can contribute to gang membership:
Sense of belonging: Gangs can provide a sense of community and acceptance that may be lacking in fatherless homes.
Role of father figure: Gang leaders can fill the role of father, and members may model their behavior after them.
Low parental attachment: Low parental attachment to a child is a risk factor for gang membership.
Low expectations for success: Low expectations for success in school, both by parents and students, are a risk factor for gang membership.
Low student commitment: Low student commitment to school is a risk factor for gang membership.
Low attachment to teachers: Low attachment to teachers is a risk factor for gang membership.
Social breakdown: A collapse in traditional fatherhood can drive children into gang culture.
Neighborhoods with low social integration: Growing up in neighborhoods with low social integration is a risk factor for gang membership.
Damn, homie was more chill during End of Watch, seems like he’s off that 🦜 ❄️
Agreed!!! I grew up on 7th and Soto. In WF hood. Even is you weren’t from a hood or were. You still had to carry that machismo so you wouldn’t get messed with. I now say we were protecting what ever good we had inside our hearts from the evil world by pouring up that tough persona. Real talk with real G’s. Shout out to father G, aliso village .
They gotta be aggressive because everyone around them feels like that’s the only way to not get picked on. That’s the life they live and they choose it
Being liked gets you further than being tough.
I grew up around gang members, I had gang members in my family, Both sides of my families have active members, I had a few that flocked in my circle of friends, I grew up in a where rival shootings occurred. I had beef with members even though I didn’t ’bang’. I didn’t fear them is what they these kinda people don’t like (blasted tattoos, certain colors and intimidation tactics- didn’t work on scaring me)
I’m not a gang banger, I’m a Good Samaritan and hard worker. I don’t care what hood you’re from, for me, it’s about self respect and dignity that makes you a gangster.

Grew up around the FMV neighborhood. You definitely didn't have to be aggressive, just street smart. If you were aggressive you will eventually hit that brick wall fast. Life in prison or 6 feet under. Montebello was not hood at all. Boyle Heights, and East LA were crazy. Even if you were not from a gang you would more than likely get hit up.
NO FEAR . 100 RESPECT
Being aggressive either got you killed or in jail for killing ain’t no good to it.

For the most part, in “these streets”, you mostly had issues when you pretended to be someone you weren’t. How I wish I would have spent my teens and twenties being productive and keeping my head down… but I do that now. Let’s teach the youth to be kind, rather than feed their fears. It takes a village.
