Another thing thats nice to do before the waxing is just wipe it a litte with a wet cloth, and then dry it with another one. Takes about 30 seconds and gives you a much cleaner base to work with.
Can you put out a ski maintenance vid? Things to check everyday, every week every year?!?!?!
Thanks your vids are the best!
Oh no, you gotta use this and that...
I completely disagree...I get the best results using THAT and then THIS....give it a try!
Keith that made me laugh
The ski wax makers love your instructions. For every very dry base and new ski, hot waxing is de rigeur. Once my skis are well soaked and used my true 20% effort for 80% results is to brush the bases first. Then I rub the wax on in an even coat. Then I use a cork or other buffing tool to buff it vigorously. Now is the critical step, brush the base like your mom's watching you scrub her floor. All you need is a molecule thin layer of wax and more brushing makes for more glide. Once done wipe the base with a clean rag and you're done.
after watching several videos about ski waxing, the technique a like the most is to warm the wax with the iron and then press the wax block on the skis... wax gets fixed to the ski. Then, iron it. The less wax on the skis, the better cause you will need to scrap less and the result is the same (also you save some wax). Another tip: clean your skis before waxing!
Nice Tutorial!
Can you make a video how to edge grinding your skis? :)
In the case you are doing this please include detuning :D
Thank you this is perfect video for 85% of skiers that just turning left and right, every other video preparing you like you will race on Austria Alps, God bless you thanks again
can u keep making 5 tricks to learn in one weekend
Have you already learned them all?
Their anual
thank you so much, this was very useful! Always wanted to give a try waxing my skis at home, definitely gonna do it after watching this video!
You nailed the basics of waxing. Nice tutorial :) Showed a couple of friends that were confused when I showed them. Hope you have a great 2019-'20 ski season!
Yes! Another video on doing a complete tuneup for perfectionist, please!
If you want to go even cheaper, you can take a kitchen scourer instead of the brush. Works like a charm!! Seriously identical results
I do this too! Works great.
Huh, this is exactly what I already did haha, thanks for letting me know it's "minimal" I guess :p
lmao same
Now that I think about it, before everything I clean them with isopropol alcohol 🙂 but the rest is exactly the same
o I don’t do that 😂
cool intro to waxing, kinda use the same method for doing my board's as well( moved to boarding this season). Can u do a video on explaining how to edge skies and why its important.
Pareto distribution 20-80! Nice vid!
Only thing I would add, which still keeps it minimal is to finish with a scotchbright pad after brushing. Nice video.
Nice job jens
I like the down to earth tuto! People how go out ski for Only a few days a year and claim to feel when there ski’s need an wax job i dont take for full. Just work a littel harder you wnkr!
A quick buff with a rag after scrapping helps and only adds a few minutes.
There are two things I would - they take no time at all. First is an old towel that I rip into a few smaller sections that I slightly wet one when I start to wipe down ski before I start waxing and then again after brushing. The second thing is that wax invariably drips down and will build up on the top side of the ski / sidewall / binding area. After I wipe down the ski after brushing, I flip the ski over and very quickly with a rubber edged tool scrap off the wax buildup that has shown up in areas where it shouldn't be - don't use metal scraper as it will damage your skis & don't use your plastic scraping tool as you want to keep the edges on that tool undanaged. I use the same little rubber tool to scrap any wax off the vertical ski edge. The entire job including cleanup should take 15 minutes
Awesome tutorial!
Sharpening???
Super nice tuto.
However I thing it is important to say that the more you wait before the brush en I don’t know how it is called but you know what I mean the better it is
You really need to try easywaxxx! Thats the best ski wax!
I work in a ski shop, I totally agree with your technique !
vinonsflyer Can I wax my front skis cause there's lots of scratches and fiberglass peeling off.
Can you explain what’s edge grinding for?
Could you do a more in depth tutorial because I’ve delaminates my race skis before and really would like to know a good way to prevent dalmination. I warm my skis and don’t keep iron in one place too long. What else could be done?
Yo dude how many skis do you have? Can you make a video of your collection
Jonas H ikr it looked like he had tons
Thank you I just bought a tuning kit. After how many ski days should I rewax?
Hey Jens, discovered your channel here today, wow, awesome tipps and advice you give. Gonna take your tipps for at last to do a frigging hell and I'm 54 ! In my youth I raced SL and GS so I had to wax my ski's most winter weekends and it took ages. So now I have a Hack that might be even cooler than doing 20% of the work for a 80% result. I simply keep s some Pronto wood polish spray and a cloth and spray my bases as needed. Takes less than a minute , and yes it works, except it won't last a whole day imho.
I'm 52 think I know how you feel bro!
I don‘t wax in S-shape and make two lines like 1-2cm away from the edges instead. The area along the edges needs wax the most as it’s getting dry faster than mid-base.
I like your videos and the way you present them 👍
Yea you’re probably right. But I feel like as long as it gets an even layer once you melt it the initial placement doesn’t matter much since you put on so much more than what is left in the end
Thanks for the tips! What if I don’t have a scraper? Where could I get one? Or what else could I use?
First like!! 😋
i love your tutorials dude! how about making a simpel tutorial book with text and ikea like cartoon about tips and tricks. i would defently buy it for on the Mountain !!
Haha maybe that's a fun idea!😎
dips on first edition
Is there a different technique used to wax skis prior to off-season storage? Do you skip the scraping step, then scrape and brush prior to next time you go skiing?
Can you do a ski tuning/sharping video
How often do you wax your skis? Because I get mine waxed every time I return from a ski trip and I don’t know if it’s necessary. (I ski around 3 weeks a year)
Hey could you make a video about skiing switch? I've watched a bunch of videos about it, but still can't get my skis closer than a foot together.
I pretty much do exactly that to my skis. But after brushing with a stiff brush I go over it with a cork and then my skis end up way faster when I get on the snow.
I like the video. Wax only lasts a day or two anyway so it is best not to go overboard.
ok what about this is minimal? this is what I thought a standard wax job was. Do you usually do multiple brushes or hot scrapes?
How do you get those stickers like the smartwool ones on your helmet. I can’t find smartwool stickers anywhere
i literally watch this every year. I fell like im doing something wrong every time
Would you do a vid on applying a dry wax! No iron, no heat. Just rub on and buff.
Can you do the last step with a copper brush?
For new or really dry bases ironing is okay, all that wax getting shaved off is basically wasted. For maintenance I rub the wax on then buff it with a fabric dowel or cork then I brush like it's a major itch that just will not stop, wipe with a clean tag then brush it some more. This has reduced my wax purchases drastically.
More than I do...brushing is for perfectionists
What wax iron is that? I've been looking for a slim wax iron
What helmet do you use ?
Do a "Top 5 Knuckle tricks"
Why are you scratching of wax from the ski?
I thought u shouldn’t clamp the ski down when ironing because It might warp as It warms up
Wax temps are based on snow temp
No, it's not. It's based on the wax itself
I can't find the all weather wax
Waxing keeps my bases from drying out.
Nothing worse than a crusty bottom!!
Karl Skwiot golden comment
that’s what he said
how many skies do you have?
How often do I need to do this?
I was wondering.. can I re-use the excess wax I've scraped off the ski for the next one? I know this is probably too much hassle for most people since general purpose wax is quite cheap, but I hate wasting precious resources. Also, how often should I repeat the waxing? Once the base looks/feels "dry" for sure, but that could be as many as 10-20 days on the mountain for me (earn your turns, very little uplifts).
Andreas Scharl definitely can reuse the excess wax you scrape off, great point!
id recommend just learning the right amount of wax you can use per ski so that you scrape off or waste very little. a good way to do this is to crayon the wax on by warming the bar on the iron for a quarter of a second then drawing it onto the ski
I wouldn't. when you scrape, you're scraping all kinds of debris and impurities out of your skis. Waxing not only protects your base but purifies it as well. Definitely don't reuse the wax if you put your skis on ski racks.
1:05 it says S-hape instead of s-shape lol
Ur supposed to clean them before you wax them ..?
What's a good substitute for the bench vice? Those cost around 100€
A couple of books or Tupperware boxes
I use some work trestles with some old bike innertubes put over them, is super practical and grippy👍
Just bought my first vice before that i just used some old textbooks, if eventually you do buy a bench vice a metal one is definitely the way to go
I took a piece of wood and cut it the same size as my ski boots. Now you can put the wood into your binding and clamp the wood in a normal vice. Extra effect is you don‘t need a rubber band 👍
2 chairs
That was a lot of wax O.O
I usualy only put a couple of dops every 2-3cm
using less can make the scraping a lot easier too! (and cost less of coruse)
How do I fill chips? From rocks and stuff...
ptex, i think he already has a video on it, but just search for ptex repair and you will find any video
What skis do you have right now? Allmountain or freeskis?
simon camango olsson those were atomic Bentchetler, think those are the fat 120s but he also rides them in 100
added to liked
My method is to wax, scrape, run over it with a toko cork for a bit, then hit it with a buffing cloth. Better than just brushing and only takes an extra minutes. Also very cheap.
I mean, it wouldn't hurt to brush too though lol
What are you favorite inexpensive pair of googles?
Just google it
Im guessing you're swedish, where from Sweden?
I'm good. As advertised, "minimal".
Beats "no wax job" which is what a lot of people have.
question can you just rub your wax on without the iron??? i have been skiing for 5 years and still don’t know
Ski bases are designed to kind of “soak up” or hold the wax, so you need to melt the wax right into the base with the iron for it to last a while and provide good glide.
@@AndrewJG95 thank you
So what’s the non minimal way?
Type in how to wax your skis on youtube and click on any video :P
what Kind of products are good?
xSxUxNx toko and swix are the best brands but are also $$
Hertel waxes are nice and not pricey atleast if you live in the US
First comment
I usually wax my own skis and do everything in this video but I wish he went a little more in depth about the scraping process. I never know when I have taken off enough wax or possibly too much. Usually I just feel the skis for an area that doesnt feel smooth but still, I am not a professional and do not know what an optimal scrape looks/feels like. Any suggestions??
u should always scrape until there’s no more wax coming off. your base should look waxless, it’s what’s been absorbed that matters
It’s not a huge deal if you don’t get al the wax when scraping as the excess will be scraped off by the snow during your first few runs
@@jakedoyle2601 no it won’t. The more you brush, the more excess wax you will brush out of the ski and the better the structure of the bottom of the ski will come out - hence, the better and faster your skis will glide. The more wax you leave on the bottom of your skis, the more they will “brake” on the snow.
The structure of the base should really be completely visible and you should brush until no wax whatsoever comes out. Literally nothing. Not a single dust. Fyi, it takes me a good half hour to brush out just one single ski. Yes, that much. I do some 50 passes I guess. The result is a shiny base with an immaculately visible structure and a ski that performs better than any of those skis coming out of those machine-driven rental shops. I’ve done the comparison and my skis glide ten times better, period.
Check out Phantom :-)
You know what I just realized he lives at the same place as andri ragettli does
You neglected the wax on wax off reference.
Stomped
just to save a bit of money and not always buying waxes you can try and put not as much as jens did. if wax drips from the sides of the ski while you are melting it in you have put too much!
Very little information. Now I'm going to look for another video that actually get into it.
What else is needed to make it not “minimalist”
A much more thorough scraping and (especially) brushing of the base. The lesser wax you leave behind, the better your skis will gilde. I always brush the base until literally NO trace of wax is left. Believe me, this requires a lot of passes with the brush, but the result is absolutely worth it.
Nooooooooooooooooo I just probably ruined my skis, I overheated the base
This method of waxing is out of date. Heating and scraping was a myth to begin with and now they process is dead. Just a waste of excess wax.
Why??
Honestly the quick and dirty nature of the whole video wasn't worth it. It's not conveying what the point of waxing and technique is in the first place, or why ski/board bases need wax.
