I don't know if I mention in the video, but my altitude sickness was caused by clogged sinuses, putting pressure on my top teeth. Some pain relief medicine, different breathing techniques, and time made it all better! Thanks for watching!
Also just a shout out to anyone who's experienced altitude sickness (or worried about it): diamox is your buddy. I recently spent a few days above 4500m/15000ft and my brain/body/mood were just slowly deteriorating until I started taking some diamox I had reserved for emergencies. It felt like wussing out to make the decision, since it wasn't an acute situation, but the almost immediate improvement quickly justified the call. It just made the whole experience so much better, and didn't detract at all from the feeling of hard work I was putting in on the trail.

As "Chef," I had the pleasure of meeting you and Sprocket in this section, on the day you were both headed into Lone Pine. Wow, so Sprocket is even more hard core than you! What a nice tribute to her.
Dude, Sprocket seems like a complete hiking beast. Tiny pack (homemade), no trekking poles and a huge smile. So amazing! I can't imagine the majesty at sunrise and sunset that you saw.
Great video of the approach to Trail Crest. I did that climb last year. I remember that view vividly. Glad you had a companion in Sprocket to experience it with.
Loved it. Summited Whitney in 1980 with my late father-in-law. Still a sweet memory. On the way down we encountered Hulda Crooks -- Grandma Whitney. She was something like 85 and it was her 18th ascent in as many years. She hadn't start hiking until she was in her 60s. One of the peaks in the foreground along the ridge at 07:36 was named for her when she passed.
@@JupiterHikes That time is the first she didn't make it up Whitney. The snow on the east side was very deep. We had to glissade a portion of it to get down. She was just turning back when we met her. She gave us a little booklet or tract about herself. Still have it.
Ran into you both briefly at Chicken Spring Lake, then crossed paths with Sprocket again at Big Lake Youth Camp. You guys make a great team. Another beautiful vid as always man!
Hello Jupiter! I completed t he CT this summer and had almost the exact same start and finish times as you did. I completed the trail in 21 days at age 58 and I can't wait to retire and hit the PCT in 2-3 years. Love your videos.
That is very impressive. I did the Long Trail in Vermont this year in 19 days. I am looking forward to doing the CT next year. I am looking forward to smooth trails and stitch backs. I plan on doing The PCT in 2024 or 25. I am 63. Since going UL my miles have climbed . Take care and good luck on the PCT.
Great editing with the fade ins and fade-outs! Brought back memories of my summit of Mt Whitney some 20-25 years ago! It is an experience that always remains with you!
Excellent! It felt like I was hiking along with you and Sprocket. Hopefully I'll be experiencing it first hand in a year or two! Glad you figured out the cause of your tooth pain.
Sprocket was awesome - hike with her abit before Mammoth! Great vids! So nice looking through all theese now - finding people ive met myself along the trail in 22. Happy Hiking! - PlusOne
Great video! I've only done the John Muir trail, but it brought up so many good memories from the Mt Whitney section! Thanks for the continuous release of the PCT videos, excited for the upcoming ones!
You made such a good point about expired meds. We carry the FA and don’t often use. I had an issue that usually an ibuprofen would solve. Nope. Borrowed one and yep. After this summer, I’ll take a better look at my kit because what’s the point of carrying aspirin or ibuprofen from 2017.
Some of us are blessed with being able to hike without blisters! Though in my own case, the tradeoff for no blisters = bad knees haha. Glad you had someone to hike with for those tough miles. Whitney was beautiful!
@kreestuh4367, me too! I’m one of those lucky no blister people but my knees are horrible. I didn’t know I had knee problems until a started backpacking and doing more intense hikes just a few years ago. After two hours of consistent hiking my knees are talking and if a lot of rocks as we have in NY, my knees will scream at me. I started the ATG program and that is helping so far. Do you have any tricks that have been working for you?
@@souldancer06 My knee pain is mostly IT band pain-- I've found the following help the most: stretching a lot, taking breaks, and when off trail, using resistance band exercises to strengthen my legs. I still struggle with it on longer trips though!
I did the PCT last year and went thru the Sierras in April, it was like 80 percent snow and super cold most days. It's so crazy to see what the mountains look like with no snow and for there to be a trail 😁.
Your Mt Whitney experience was a world away from mine. I ascended it from the HST on a Saturday, and it was crowded up there. But I did start before sunrise. Seeing the lights go up the mountain before sunrise was very surreal. I can't wait to go back to the sierras.
I was up there about 2 weeks after Jupiter, also starting late, because the afternoon and night before had been very stormy. It was also Saturday (6/18). Quite some people up there around 1 pm, but for sure more in the early morning which I met when they came down and complained about the cold ;)

I have always heard the opposite, Sierra. A quick Google and I see that is because the word Sierra in Spanish 'range of mountains' is already plural and would be redundant to add an extra s I am not from the area, this is just what I've heard over the years and now see online 🤷
@@JupiterHikes You are completely right. - But there are people everywhere who don't care about reason. You can find banners "Welcome to the Sierras"... - so welcome to the Pacifics crests trails ;) BTW, the Sierra Nevada is just named after its original in Andalusia in the south of Spain. The Spanish Sierra Nevada lies on the same latitude, has similar climate, a bit warmer and less snow, up to 11.500 ft altitude. But a lot smaller in area.

Glad you identified the root of the problem.

Sprocket never uses hike stix? Reminds me of Jupiter.
Yes
Hard out man, the desert must've been pretty damn rough with your sleep / shelter system. Plush GRASS finally.
It wasn't so bad! Most of the desert is not really desert. A lot of high elevation sections daily at my pace
That’s cool.

Don't you bring a Garmin inreach with you? once you do such long thru hikes, or do you believe everything happens for a reason if it goes bad ? :)
Cool thx 😎

please tell me you see Sprocket again on this trail!

I do not unfortunately. She later switched to some Patagonia shorts, but I don't think she was super thrilled about the fit.
Maybe a new future hiking partner.
