How L.A. Metro is addressing safety at its most dangerous station

- About 20,000 passengers move through the Westlake/MacArthur Park Station every single day, but it also has the highest level of crime of any L.A. Metro station. KTLA 5's Annie Rose Ramos has an exclusive report on how L.A. Metro is trying to improve safety and security, for both passengers and employees. July 12, 2023.

What Metro needs to do if figure out a way to not let the homeless go down that far into the stations.
The three new stations on the recently opened Regional Connector have the turnstiles at street level to help exactly with what you describe so I wouldn't be surprised if they retrofit stations in the same way where they can. Of course, this also means the ticketing ATMs will be further out from the concourse and platforms. The ticketing ATMs on the new RC stations are outside because of this change with the turnstile placement.
Ok but homelessness is not Metros burden to carry on its own. The city needs to step up
Exactly right
LA is completely out of control. The laws need to change in California. Mental hospitals need to be reopened
It just got worse with 0 bail for common criminals
Democrat's voted for this. Let them have it.
@@mhaas281 I didn't vote for this and I have to live through it..
@@MarcusLeonard307 it's sucks. We all have to unfortunately.

These are all good steps! I applaud LA METRO for this. I just hope this is permanent. This cant be just a trial or a few months. This needs to happen every day for as long as it needs to be happening.
Agreed.
And every station as well i want more fare inspectors im fed up of others jumping fare and getting too close to a paying rider so the faregate doesnt close on the Unpaying Homeless
@@kevinquirarte2365if you ask me, I think every city, big or small needs that.
Its not working.
Make it harder for people to enter without paying. Right now, they go in because they don't have to pay, it's too easy (too many freeloading riders too btw). If they're forced to pay, they won't go in. That's probably the easiest, quickest way to fix the issue without adding more manpower. But yeah, more security personnel would be really nice, too. Actually it takes police force. Because security guards seem to be afraid to confront them, too. Anyway, it's such a shame we can't use the otherwise fantastic public transportation that we are paying for.
I thought the most dangerous station is 7th and Figureroa in downtown. So many deadly stabbing and shooting incidents near there recently. I went there myself to take the train, immediately felt unsafe and had to stand tall and act tough cause it looked like anyone there had a potential to mug me.
Anyways, I went to Japan recently and gosh the subways there are the best. Clean, very civilized people minding their business, safe feeling and I literally slept on the trains there without worry. If only LA trains could be like Japanese trains.
Well you are in us for some reason, why compare ?
it is this is not DTLA
There is a good reason mommy and daddy moved here and named you Michael, keep that in mind.
I imagine it's because, Japan actually ARRESTS criminals
Well Japanese trains have old men constantly feeling up on young girls but you’re not going to have safe trains in America because these aren’t Japanese these aren’t Norwegians Koreans polish you can only have safe trains when you have certain races of people. But being that we are told diversity is a strength guess what stabbings shootings outrages upon women hammer attacks these will always be a problem because we allow certain races in our society. You can have diversity or you can have safety but the less white a society becomes the more dangerous a society becomes. You’re only safe in certain races of people diversity brings violence .
The crazy thing is that about a few weeks ago, some random woman who appeared to be homeless and suffering from mental health problems assaulted me and pushed me off the train cutting my arm with an unknown object in the process. The police didn’t even arrest her. They just looked at her and let her go smh

I honestly feel bad for the very, very small percentage of folks that are homeless who actually want to improve their situation and NOT be homeless. These fools hanging out, napping, and slamming fenty on the Metro are not them though lolz
I agree.
Don't forget that the cost of living is pushing more people towards homelessness. It's not all drugs, mental illnesses and "laziness".
Few days a go I saw a black ambassador wearing heavy headset walking at the station, listening to hard core music, I want to ask question, he just replied "oh, I cannot heard you!" Loudly, becuzse you have uncivilized people as resident who using metro and the people working there behave like they want to get fired at any second , that's why you have the most dangerous metro system in the US.
I like how they installed some vents so you can't put your cocaine on a piece of paper and light it anymore. nice job MTA
😂 this was a joke. I ride the metro everyday. The only reason the police escort the man with the cart was because you were doing a news story. They never escort or remove the homeless from the platform or carts. The solution is not housing. The solution is rehab and preparing them for the workforce. I’ve work in shelters/housing for homeless before, they just sleep, continue doing drugs and make a mess.
Please interview the riders. They will give you the real story. Interview the most vulnerable who are women and the elderly. Homeless always attack the most vulnerable.
The main problem today is that legally you cannot force someone into the long term treatment they need to get better which in turn results in prisons serving as poor substitutes for long term mental health and substance abuse programs.
I was thinking this the whole time. They don’t do nothing when someone is harrasing you or threatening your safety. I was on the 720 the other day and FOUR Metro employees just watched as a man started harrasing me telling me to fight him. I literally stared at them and they all looked at me like “Well are you going to fight or not.” I just kept ignoring the guy until he got off 3 stops later. For 10 min this guy was screaming asking to fight and they didn’t tell him nothing.
@@ivancenea That's unfortunate, but unless those employees were Metro security officers they have no obligation to step in especially if the crazy person didn't touch you. That would be like expecting the bus driver to intervene because someone is being an idiot on the bus.
However, if the employees were LA Metro security and they did nothing, I would have reported them. But if they were not, it also isn't fair to expect a regular employee to step in when they have no security training. They didn't sign up for that.either.
Had one try to attack me on the expo line today. I reported it & have heard nothing. No one helped. The train operator did not help & there were no police/ambassadors around. The expo line is often filthy as well.
@@lovelystarchild Completely disagree. I've been on the E line several times since the new Regional Connector opened and have had absolutely no issues and there were ambassadors and transit security on the platforms and in some of the cars not all. The stations were clean on the ones I used and even saw cleaning personnel.
However, it's good you reported it. I saw two troubling issues, but they didn't impact my ride experience. The first one was some graffiti on one of the escalators. I reported it to one of the ambassadors and she made note of it and said she would take care of it. I should have checked a few days later when I used that same station but forgot. I'll check to see if it's gone next trip. The other issue was a young man who was shirtless and incoherent on one of the platforms so two transit security officers escorted him out and put him in a patrol car.
Crime is way up in LA, Homelessness is way up in LA, High Rent and Expensive … LA is a Toliet
LA is becoming a Concentration Camps Very Ghetto
This random "man" walked up to me on the redline and I ignored him. He walked up to me like ignoring him was so offensive that he looked like he was going to chest bump me. I cannot stand the "men" in the U.S. Its everywhere. Wanting to "posture" women who mind their own business. Bunch of nutcases.
I hear you. As a woman, I don't feel safe taking public transportation in LA. I'd rather walk. I have been harassed & terrorized on busses & trains several times. Today, on the expo line, a guy kept harassing me over my eye color. I tried ignoring him til he grabbed my arm when I tried to move away from him. He threatened to st@b me in front of everyone & called me a racist white b!tch. I reported it to the transit watch app & nothing was done. No one on the train told this guy to leave me alone. These homeless males are only tough when they are terrorizing women, the elderly & children.
Men huh? So are you trying to say every man is doing this? I'll bet you wouldn't be too happy about sweeping generalizations of women.
Arrest and jail the criminals and that will solve the issues 🎉
Wonderful. If all stations were managed this way, I would start taking the train again.
You can see a difference already throughout the system since they deployed the transit ambassadors and the extra security officers
@@mrxman581really true I recently rode the metro for the first time in about 3 years, way safer now all across the lines.
I think it's getting there. There were a ton of Metro Police at the Hollywood/Highland and Noho stations when I rode through this past Wednesday. Their presence really makes a difference.
I hope so. Security/police should be stationed at the entrance to stations and keep out people trying to get in without paying. I think that would cut down on some of the problems (in the stations and trains at least). I live near a Gold Line station and we keep getting assaults in the parking garage and the surrounding area.
Someone is assaulted every 10 minutes in LA
I take LA Metro public transportation and this pilot program NEEDS to be at more stations, "could be" is not acceptable. More safety measures need to added but this is a start. Good job. Let's see it this program stays in place and not disappear after a month. Can we see a similar pilot program for LA Metro Bus system because there are people who do not pay and the bus operators allow it. There is also drug use and homeless issues on the bus too.
I believe they said it would be instituted on buses too which is where most of the safety issues occur. Not surprising considering how many more buses there are in the system.
Bless those employees. I work in DTLA and man they get put through some stuff by pedestrians.
LA red line is way more dangerous than the NYC subway
Safety at every station
The Metro Ambassadors are a joke. You need an armed police presence to secure these areas.
True 😊
Most of the bums don't want to go to a shelter because they don't want to give up them drugs and alcohol habits.
I saw one ambassador getting high lol 😅
Exactly why the heck have so many ambassadors if they are not doing anything. That money should go on improving safety !

The Ambassadors are useless. I see groups of them hanging out together having a good time but ignoring everything that’s going on around them. What a poorly managed effort. Typical of Metro.
Waste of money bring more cops
So sad all of this happens in one of the most expensive places to live in the world
its the "why are you scared" reporter!
Sorry we all have to inconvenience bums and criminals while rewarding them with free healthcare. “Visually uncomfortable”. Seriously?
Rule 1 ..... less police = less reports of crimes = less statistics of crimes = less crimes area wide = less crime tada .
Rather than just bright lights, classical music, and new ventilation, how about ONLY allowing PAYING CUSTOMERS in the stations and on the platforms? And enforcing vagrancy laws? Otherwise, despite updated links to Beverly Hills, Century City, and Westwood, Metro will NEVER convince people who have a car to “go Metro”
Here's a tip.... MOVE!
Arrest anyone loitering at the Metro station, harrassing people, panhandling, protesting or preaching. Arrest anyone found laying down in a Metro car to sleep or playing loud music or using phone with speakers on.
This is the one metro stop I never get off at and always brace myself when people get on there. It’s disgusting. Literally keep anyone not paying out, so the rest of us can PAY and use this service.
Classical music! That'll stop crime!

It's so sad they need to go to Singapore and ride their subway I have never felt so safe there.... You don't have a society you don't have a community you don't have a civilized world if law abiding citizens don't feel safe... That's the bottom line.

Kind of like Squid Games.
Our public transport is like 30 years behind the world it’s sad. And then the ones who want us to use public transportation don’t even use it because they’re chauffeured around in a fancy car
I appreciate Metro's efforts. Thank you!
Two months later this place is still full of homeless people doing drugs
The actions and inactions of big cities like Los Angeles truly encourage bad behavior. It should be illegal for people to sleep, do drugs and defecate in public. There needs to be some homeless camp, similar to a refugee camp, out in the desert to properly house these people. Here people will get feed, receive medical attention and will hopefully be in an drug free safe environment.
We have those already. They're called prisons. And that's exactly where many of these people go but rarely ever get the treatment they need because they can't legally hold them for that long. It's the legal system that also doesn't help
LA AIN'T SAFE
That 🔵 blue line is a battleship
I Can smell the fentanyl burning in fóil paper just by seeing this video
Fenti alert, no smoke dope in stations no free rides on da bus . Come on
Car culturians gosh i hate motorists
yeah but the ambassadors dont really do anything if someone is being harrased not sure why the ambassadors are really there... there jobs are not needed as they dont ensure safety you need to hire more security
The problem isn’t just the Metro subway but the buses too! Line 720 Santa Monica line is always full of heroin addicts and the problem gets ignored always. I let a homeless guy sit next to me because he was barefoot & cold. No one would let him sit next to them. I felt pity for him but as he sat next to me he started shooting his arm. I took a picture of him doing so and e-mailed LA Metro and all I got was “Sorry for the Inconvenience” that’s it. This action basically describes how they dont take this seriously.
they need to guard the entrances and check if anyone has any valid ticket to get on the train otherwise they'll never get rid of them. I don't know why they have compassion for trash when they don't want help because they live lawless lives
Stop lying that music is not to keep people moving, it's the keep the homeless from sleeping there. 7-Eleven plays classical music all the time for that same reason. 🤣
But anyways, these days I find myself not riding the Metro Trains, because I've encountered some doing drugs and witnessed a kid getting physically attacked by someone so that's when I stopped. Until you actually apply some sort of safety measures I won't be riding it.
Philly could use this on their transit system and as a way to clean up Kensington Avenue which has become the Skid Row of the East Coast. Kensington Avenue forms part of the busy Market Frankford elevated. Let Mayor Cherelle Parker in on ideas from other cities such as LA
They dont care about passengers. My family and I took the fly away one time and arrived at the metro downtown station and were going to walk through the station to get to the front of the station to catch our bus home. We were told that the station was closed and to go around, yet many homeless were roaming around INSIDE the station behind the guards?!! What!? Then as we were walking around, we were surrounded by homeless sleeping and wandering all over the property. Needless to say, we didnt catch our bus home (the last one for the night), and had to find another bus just to get somewhat close to our home and then an uber. Most ridiculous event ever. If they are going to have a late Fly Away, have the station open for those passengers, have police officers to keep the property safe, and dont just leave paying passengers to ponder a new way home. Very dangerous.
Need to have check points at all entry points to weed out the rift raft.
how about you house all the homeless people at Macarthur park, its zombieland out there
She just said it OVERDOSE , this is the out come when legalizing drugs , what people expected???
I used TTC in january 24 for 3 weeks and it is still garbage
So that's what those Ambassadors are. Didn't really know what their role was but that's good.
It's insane that most countries in the world can provide safe use of metro and public transportation systems but we struggle so much to do that in the RICHEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. Absolutely bonkers.
Great, so now these poor ambassadors are responsible for saving lives, ugh

BUSES? The green shirts don’t go on buses besides the Silverline…
This aged well.
And yet they still refuse to add metal detectors and better fare gates.
Metal detectors are a panacea. But hiring more security officers to patrol the gates would be good.
It’s almost like they’re severely underfunded or something
Lost hope for Metro, Never going to ride again. Don't want to talk to crazy people and sit in the urine pool chairs. Pro tip don't sit on the chairs.
I'm really confused, why are you reviving drug users? If they overdose, let them go, that's the life they choose.
Oh no, they are going to attract junkies who are afraid of the dark & love classical music now 😅
Sign Prop 47 see how it affects the metro.
The current metro security system is police officers from the 3 agencies smiling and waving at entrance of metro stations while the junkies, homeless and jerks make life miserable for the working poor who are forced to ride the dangerous buses and trains. Metro: your house is on fire and your spokesperson is making silly comments that crime is not a big issue? It is so dumb to block an exit to have only one exit. That causes a flood of people to exit All exit ONE SPOT. That is when things go wrong. It is so dumb I have seen that at stores. Really? Any emergency And people only have that one and if they are from it. Well I guess they have smarter people to think of this. I mean they need people to help fix the problem that actually ride it.
I think the reason the other entrance is blocked for now is because that entrance has a longer tunnel that's more secluded.
That station needs Charles Bronson 🔫
Its crazy the amount of money they spend on this when they need to house these people
Since the pandemic I have been ovoiding metro trains because there's no security on the train station and trains. Before the pandemic it was more some station were just ok just don't give your guard up.

I ride subways and buses pretty much exclusively when I travel to Europe and Asia. All give me pleasant experiences. I travel very often, including third-world countries. Nowhere else is even close to what people in LA are facing. I recently went to NYC and Chicago and tried their subways and buses too. All I have to say is even they are much better than LA. California is a joke now.
