This reminds me of the time when a US congressman asked a general why they can't just take full control of Syria's air space, and the general had to embarrassingly explain that simply taking over Syrian air space like that requires them to go to war with Syria and Russia.

It's also a reason why Hillary Clinton lost. Part of her platform was to create a no-fly zone over Syria. Trump responded with something to the effect of, "You have to enforce it. That leads to war, and the people here don't want war."

The Russians moved on Ukraine because Ukraine has no military alliance and will never be admitted into the EU or NATO as long as it's an active conflict zone. There is very little to gain here for the Europeans while the Americans run their mouths on the other side of the ocean. Enforcing a no fly zone is guaranteed to unleash WO3 which will result in nuclear war. This is a no win situation for everyone involved.

Here's the thing, some of those polls also asked the question in ways that explained the implications. When people were asked if they supported the no-fly-zone even if that meant directly going to war with Russia the numbers drop off dramatically. Same question asked by/of the same people at the same time received drastically different results when asked with different wordings.

Yes, it is completely true, the fact is that many people do not know what the terminology "no fly zone" really means, and a large number actually think that the point is to pass a law that the other side will automatically have to respect. But that is far from the truth. I personally think that this would inevitably lead from local war, in Europe, to WWIII overnight.

I was in London a few weeks back. In the Soho area, I came across a group of youthful girls (between their teens and 20s) chanting & preaching for the No-Fly-Zone. There were about forty of them. I asked all of them what exactly was the meaning of a No-Fly-Zone over Ukraine. Now, at this point, I had been deliberately ignoring & cutting off all the news. So I was pretty uneducated on the matter, and was genuinely curious to learn more about this war. But the girls reactions, who were preaching for this, were…
They looked away, muttered in confusion, and didn’t give me one single answer.

Apparently I'm in the 26 percent of my country that still has the sense to know that a no-fly zone is a bad idea. The fact the percentage for Yes was that high further analyzes the big (and scary) problem regarding education in this country. The average American probably thinks "no-fly zone means no planes, this is great" but this very mindset shows they don't know their own history. And then when Biden makes the right call to not order a no-fly zone, then they're like "Biden isn't brave enough, he's a chicken" and blame Biden for this whole thing when it's not his fault.
When a no-fly zone is ordered, and an American jet attacks a Russian one, Russia will now have the excuse to use their arsenal, or even plot an Alaska invasion to reclaim it. Whose fault would it be now? The ones who pressured him, the ones who didn't do their research. Plus people still blame him for Kabul's fall...even though the Doha Agreement with the Taliban happened under the TRUMP administration

Even today, as horrible images of the Russian massacre in Bucha comes out and reports of chemical weapons being used and children refugees being kidnapped and raped by Russian soldiers, I think it’s time we step in and end this. No matter the costs. We can’t leave Ukraine out like this. We are complicit in our inaction and cowardice for what’s happening too. What does it mean when the powerful America just stays by and does nothing in the face of evil? Our founding fathers and American ancestors are rolling in their graves. They would never accept what’s happening now, seeing a European dictator murderous regime steamroll a fledgling Europeans democracy.

Putin would not want to look like a pushover after acting as the aggressor, so there's no doubt he would ignore it, in which case you have two options, either A, NATO fight to defend it and make the war worse, or B it doesn't get enforced, in which case it's back to square one but everyone is slightly more pissed than before.

      @TheKhamuhl 2 роки тому

Those who support no fly zone are thinking that WWIII is at this point inevitable (or that it has already started). Russia generally prepares their public in advance for things like that. Last year Putin published his essay stating that Ukraine is not a country and Ukrainians are no distinct people. Before Crimea takeover there were public discussions about, well, taking Crimea. Currently Russian propaganda states that all Ukrainians are Nazis and must be punished (intention for genocide which is supported by monstrous Russian actions in occupied Ukrainian territories) and, more interestingly, that the "real Nazis" are the West, that Russia is building "new world order" and their goal is an "open Europe from Vladivostok to Lisbon." Combine that to their initial demands of NATO returning to its 1997 borders - basically, abandoning Central and Eastern Europe to Russia - and the final picture seems grim indeed. Ukraine is not the goal of Putin. It seems it is just the first step.
If NATO - Russian conflict is inevitable (which may as well be if one of the sides, Russia, is willing to gamble on it), doing everything to stop Russia in Ukraine is logical, even at the incredibly high cost. I'm not saying that WWIII is inevitable. I'm just saying there might be logic behind advocating for no fly zone even knowing the risks.

The biggest tragedy in this war is that the west lets Russia think they can controll the escelation. Russia belive they can do what they want. Problem with that is that is not true. There are things Russia can do in Ukraine the enforces NATO to act, and if Russia feels assured NATO will not intervein, they might create that escalation unwillingly in the naive belife NATO is commited to stay away. A Russia that do not fear NATO escalation is alot bigger risk factor for an actual escalation, then a Russia that realize there are limits to how much suffering they can create with this war. Zelensky is a smart man and knows what a no-fly zone would entail, but doesn't seem to care that Moscow and NY city could end up getting nuked in the process. I like everything Zelensky has said and done, but his request for a no-fly zone makes him look bad. He would be more productive if he spent more time asking NATO to send him Jets, so that Ukraine could defend their own sky. No-fly zone means nuclear war.

    • @jamesw7072

Not really smart. Zelensky know they are losing and still sending soldiers to their death and putting civilians at risk, restricting men from leaving the country, forcing untrained people to fight so they are killed for publicity advantages and the such. He's as shitty a leader as he is an actor and this whole thing by him is just a role like in that tv show where he played a president. Not to mention he's a puppet for a billionaire financer with personal agendas and his regime is evil that actually does commit atrocities to ethnic Russians.it's not all just "Russian propraganda"...

That poll is pretty flawed though and asked a very charged question with many false premises. The majority of the American public would support a limited intervention. One of the largest and main reasons Biden’s approval rating is in the gutter is because he cowardly retreated from Afghanistan and second, he’s letting Putin blow up Ukrainian civilians and gas them with banned chemical weapons. The American people want more to be done it shows, if they’re supporting a no fly zone in a supermajority. America is so divided right now, and no domestic issue gets more than 50% support. But helping Ukraine and defeating Putin’s war machine is something we could unite from the left to the right wing because the broader public agrees that more should be done.

I remember reading information after-the-fact how the Libyan population generally enjoyed the luxuries provided by their government beforehand, such as living tax-free, houses being considered as a human right, free education, cheap oil, free land etc. And now, after NATO indiscriminately bombed the country, Libya has entered a decade-long civil war which is still happening to this day with no signs of it slowing down. Remember how Trump thinks its ok to make a false flag attack against China to get China and Russia to fight each other? Because you don't understand how people like Putin, Trump, and Xi are emboldened when no one stops them from being a threat anymore. Putin ravaged Chechnya, Syria, Georgia, and Ukraine with no significant consequence til MAYBE now. Xi has Uiguirs, Tibetans, and Hong Kongers to grind into dust with no comsequence. And Trump is still a free man with people MORE capable of installing him with or without a free or fair election. Just look at 1/6 and what the GOP has done since then. One of Trump's aides spent time propping up a pro-Russian politician before working for Trump. The same Trump who held up military aid to Ukraine. So what happens there very much affects me here. These are the moments where you want a politician or career military leader explaining the consequences that the public wants to ignore cause it hurts their feelings.

It seems that some people think when you say No-Fly zone - someone shuts down air above certain height or increase gravity, so that aviation won't fly. 🙃

The answer is simple. US & NATO fears with Russia. They can just do it in middle east but not Russia.

This scenario works both ways, which is why the invasion of Ukraine was even more stupid than dangerous. Russian victory in Ukraine, unlike Russian warfare in Ukraine will not be tolerated, nukes notwithstanding. If Russia actually succeeds in its efforts to subdue Ukraine, it risks NATO becoming fully involved. This would be after a protracted war, which will inevitably erode Russian support for the effort in Russia and Belarus themselves. Deployment of tactical nukes is ineffective if you do not have the conventional capability to support the tactics that call for them in the first place. It is that conventional capability that Russia will eventually lose if it does not withdraw. Russia has backed itself into a corner of a war of conventional material attrition, not with Ukraine, but with NATO and perhaps the remainder of the non-aligned world. Even China may see it as an opportunity to appear to be an 'angel' to the west if it comes down against Putin in the end. Russia cannot replenish its conventional capability faster than NATO backed conventional forces can destroy them. By then the Russian people will realize that Putin has distilled the war down to a lose-or-nuke situation. They will choose lose, and will sue for peace with or without Putin, because the average Russian has no dog in the fight with Ukraine in the first place. Nobody but Putin and his political support structure does have a dog in that fight. This is how I know Putin is not crazy-like-a-fox, he is just plain old run of the mill crazy. Disappointing, really.

@@naramsin9838 Read a book called Empires of Trust by Thomas Madden. It will give you some insight into the US, and therefore NATO mindset. The old Soviet Union ws very costly to NATO countries. So to them any political change in the map is interpreted as an attempt to restore the old political map. The correct military response to the invasion is to do everything we can to protract the war. That is horrendous, but you will find most leaders in the west regard a new Soviet Union as more horrendous. Historically, the US and Russia rattled sabers at each other, but never drew them. But the notion of Russia expanding into a new Soviet Union puts a new wrinkle in history. I do not know what the outcome will be, but if the west has anything to do with it there will be no quick outcome, despite the rhetoric calling for a swift end.. A swift end would be to say "shame on you, Russia!" and then stay completely out of it. That they will not do. The only good news is NATO and the US will not be directly involved. We will just continue to support and arm Ukraine, for decades if need be. Putin must withdraw. For his sake, your sake, Ukraine's sake and of course our sake.

@@naramsin9838 Right or wrong, that is not the perception in the US. The leader of Russia is an ex-kgb operative with a history of publicly lamenting the downfall of the USSR. He has invaded a former USSR independent nation, with the stated goal of creating a buffer between Russia and NATO. And his ideology is nothing at all like any part of the spectrum of US ideology, broad as that may be. To the US and Europe this is all about the map, how much of it reads 'Russia' and how much does not. Ideology is secondary rhetoric mill-grist. It always has been. Try reading the book before discussing what it is about. Anything on your reading list that might enlighten me to your position? Convince me the invasion of Ukraine was necessary.
