    The whole "a machine gun would be more effective" reminds me of the ridiculous laser-guided raptor plot from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

    Loved this game when it came out. For anyone interested in playing it I suggest you mod it. Gets better then with lots of new creatures and better balance. But the campaign only works with the vanilla creatures sadly.
    I hoped for the longest time for a sequel. This, Spore and the Sims are such simple but fun ideas but most entries are underwhelming or outdated by now.

      The campaign does work with the modded creatures. There’s a mod that adds them called Tellurian Campaign. Mission 5 is buggy though because your Archerfish creatures will run into fire to try and attack it. Plus there’s a png of an Archerfish on the ground that your Archerfish creatures will start attacking.

    I can see elements of dawn of war in this game, it's interesting to see things like some of the UI/UX and even some of the environments are similar.
    I also like the idea of custom building your own units. As you say at the end it opens up a lot of new strategies and things to think about. Which is something that strategy gamers enjoy.

    Impossible Creatures is a fantastic game. It’s premise is so unique and fun. The story is fine, Rex and Lucy are decent characters and the four villains are fine too, Whitey being an angry meathead, Velika and Ganglion being quirky psychopaths and Julius being a cold, calculating, manipulative maniac. But the gameplay is really what this game is all about. Props go to the fan developed Tellurian Mod as well for creating a ton of new creatures and trying to balance things even if that hasn’t always happened. They also screwed the campaign up and made it nearly unplayable due to the unfairness of it.
    Lucy isn’t in love with Dr Chanikov (Rex’s dad), she was his assistant. 13:21 I didn’t actually know that the game would end if you didn’t get the blueprint for the sound wave tower. 50:24 pretty sure you can take multiple henchmen over at once. The enemies are actually coming through the tunnel as there’s a water chamber in a little pond that’s on the other side of the mountain from the tunnel. 55:51 that’s the tunnel that connects to the other side. 1:03:13 structures aren’t repaired for free, they take coal to fix. 1:21:44 Sigma is the technology that allows them to create combined creatures.
    Mission 10 to 15 were always really difficult for me but it was because I wasn’t aggressive enough. 1:33:47 you actually only have to take out the anti air and sound wave towers and the air chamber and workshop become yours. 1:36:17 the Tellurian Mod allows you to zoom out so you can see the entire map. 1:40:36 that is indeed what is happening. 1:42:11 Lucy gets kidnapped at the end of mission 12. 1:42:21 - 1:42:32 that’s exactly what happened.

    DOCTOR Lucy Willing came to the Isla Variatas to study under Dr. Chanikov, Earth's greatest scientist of the era, rivaled only by the likes of Marie Curie and Nikola Tesla!
    I loved this game. As a child, the difficulty presented by each and every level made it legendary. Once a year, usually during summer break, I would attempt to beat the Impossible Creatures campaign, usually making it as far as Velika's final fortress before being unable to win. Being so close to victory, yet so far, for so many years, really made me appreciate each and every little quirk in the game, far more than if it was too easy.
    Of course, if you are familiar at all with advanced RTS tactics (hotkeys, shift-commands, unit groups, feigning, baiting, etc), you'll probably find it pretty easy. Still, so much personality packed into such a forgotten old video game.

    Love this content, definetly underrated. You should try playing Duskers sometimes, it is a shortish game about exploring a dead universe ship-by-ship with your robots to try and survive and figure out what caused the apocalypse, with a punishing death system and basically no combat, which adds a lot of strategy and puzzle-solving. Definitly a unique game and refreshing to my oversaturated strategy game library.

    I love this game, besides it's main gimmick (not meant in a bad way) it also has a really nice Sky Captain/Bioshock -esque aesthetic that fits perfectly to the story.

    • @OffyDGG

      Yeah I liked the general mood. I have forgotten entirely what the story even was now, but at the time I thought it was decently done and acted. Main thing holding it back is probably that the character models are too low poly, but then again that gives it cartoon charm. A unique experience so the sure.

    I'm very thankfull that this game was mine when I was kid. And no other RTS would slightly interest me since we don't build our army in those. We have to play with what the game designed for us. And I don't like that. I wouldn't find any pleasure playing a yu gi oh game with a deck that someone builded. I know, the strategy isn't only in the unit but still. I don't see where is the replayability in starcraft or warcraft III.
    What I found interesting in your compaign is first that you made a really true judgement about it. It's indeed pretty hard at first. Mostly for a kid. Also very intense for all the micros and things you have to take care of while only seeng 1% of the map cause you can't dezoom. But with knowledge of the game and the enemy, the campaign get really easier. You don't even extend ressources that much. In fact, I recently revisited the campaign several times with self made restrictions but i still was 2x time better than the previous one and 2 times more fearless to rush and take dammage with Rex and Lucy (Also because i've seen a speedrun who show me things haha)
    Also the game without mod is very unballanced. Here we have Caméléon and Lobster who are ABSOLUTLY BUSTED. Cameleon for the régénération + fat range damages and lobster because it just have everything. Barrier destruction that allows units to kill structure so much faster. A very high defense, high dammage with good size unit and mostly régénération. Rush level III, make a full team of lobster / battering ram with the whole body of the ram and claws of the lobster and you annihilate the enemy (you still need some range units) Why ram, because decently fast, charge + horn making them faster. Their first charging hit making more dammage. And their horns ignoring a bit the defense of the enemy. All that is making every other animals and cappabilites kind of useless cause camaleon for range and lobster for melee will always be better.
    I was surprised you didn"t use the lobster more but for a first campaign you did well, good job !

    Have you seen the announcement for Dominions 6?
    You introduced me to the series with your Dominions 5 video, and, hundreds of hours later, it's my favourite strategy game after CK2.

    Impossible creatures is a classic

  • @nobubblegums-1899
    @nobubblegums-1899 9 місяців тому

    Oh I remember seeing this on a gaming magazine, never played though so a nice surprise for me. I pretty much hate ship/unit designers, but I can see why it's working here. Obviously it isn't a 4X so you're interacting with the unit more closely, and also the designing part is a lot more intuitive. So if I were to combine a whale and a lobster, I'd know that it'd have a huge HP thanks to the former and melee attack from the latter. Compare that to deciding between Gugerbergian hyper drive vs. Flaborgan fusion jumper, which requires a good amount of specific knowledge attainable only through the game's lore/meta, and a whole lot of numbers.
    So unit designers in 4Xs, still nay. In RTS, I'd say yay-ish? It definitely works here but I can't really see where else it would work, it doesn't lend itself to mixing historical units, WW2 infantry types and so on.

    • @OffyDGG
      @OffyDGG  9 місяців тому

      I agree, I also don't really like it in 4X games, but it works for me here. I am imagining some kind of sci-fi version where you piece together vehicle modules to make units with certain functionality, similar to impossible creatures. Whether this would be a nightmare, or impossible to balance, I don't know. But it feels like there is an opening for a new idea there!

  • @DrGuretOnizuka
    @DrGuretOnizuka 10 місяців тому

    Devin, I think the game is 'hard' for RTS Newbies is because the game was made in the Heyday of RTS...
    Back then a lot of people played RTS fairly regularly and Command and Conquer was really popular so I think the devs just expected people to know how to RTS.

    • @OffyDGG
      @OffyDGG  10 місяців тому +1

      Yeah that sounds about right, a true gamer's game. Only sophisticated strategists play Impossible Creatures, to be sure. 🧐

  • @povilzem
    @povilzem 10 місяців тому +3

    Positive feedback loops reward you for being good. That's intuitive and fair, but exclusive.
    Negative feedback loops punish you for being good. That's videogame communism.
    I think you need to have positive feedback, but there also needs to be a comeback mechanic. Some Spiffing type exploit.
    Or just different difficulty settings. That seems the fairest, honestly.

    • @OffyDGG
      @OffyDGG  10 місяців тому +3

      If you hadn't said 'loop' you'd be right, but the loop part is the major issue. You don't get rewarded for playing good, you get rewarded 'if you have ever played good', because the reward is causing itself over and over. Same for punishment. And by reward, we are just talking about making the game easier, reducing the skill barrier but only for skilled players. So, good play becomes worthless after a few 'loops' and the game isn't any fun to learn and get better at.
      As you said, difficulty levels is probably the easiest way to solve that. But finding a way to make it less of a loop is more interesting. The reward can't be something that makes the game easier to play, basically, and that's really hard to do. Something like extra content, ratings, high scores, would meet this criteria. But the feeling like you are getting more powerful by playing is too good to pass up on, and hence devs resort to things like level scaling to try and reward players in a way that won't effect their balancing, without making players feel like they got nothing (even if they did).
      In short, we are doomed to positive feedback loops, and the good players will forever get the least challenge. Far from video game communism indeed!
      Also exploits suck, cheat codes ftw if you want the design to rely on stuff like that. More options the better, and cheats are part of that too.
