You need to have more confidence in what you do.. I counted 6 times you either apologised for the video content or assumed we were laughing at you for choosing this subject to make a video on.. This is 100% fraud. If it was anything else, and people were selling a fake product, they would be investigated. This is a massive market and people are taking advantage. You were right about the clubs needing to do more. If they all took the tiny step of marking each shirt with an individual number, thousands of auction houses would lose all their customers and profit overnight. Sadly, where there is money to be made, there are scammers right behind. Good luck in your future purchases Ellis!!!
For sure, as a fairly new collector I find it super annoying how many fakes are out there and how little onus is on sellers to provide assurance as to the legitimacy of the shirts. When you pay a premium price for something you deserve a premium product and buying experience - which to me includes knowing you’re getting a legitimate shirt and not having to do your own checks. Your videos are informative and have helped me a lot so thanks Ellis!
I have one match worn shirt and it’s my pride and joy of clothing. It’s a 10th tier Wells City shirt. I got the shirt sent to me from the club for free all the way to America, they also sent me a match day program signed by the players and coaching staff, did a “fans abroad” section about me in their program, and got me an interview on BBC Points West. The club isn’t a big club with tons of supporters but it’s hands down my favorite shirt with a great story behind it
You are right about the NHL having label sewn into the bottom hem of the game worn jerseys..... To my knowledge, there is only one company that does game worn jersey auctions, and they are directly associated with the NHL to assure their authenticity
If you have the means (given your connections in the shirt space etc.), I'd try and set up a shirt-specific auction site which only lists shirts that can be definitively proven to be real. You'd probably be able to use your reputation as a scam-exposer to get it off the ground.
Glad to see you’ve came out with this video, the matchworn space seems to be really dodgy and that’s why I haven’t got any intentions of buying matchworn shirts in the future. Hope you’ve woken up many people.
It’s not just match worn you know. Roma Shirts did an amazing video on CFS as well where they applied new printing to an old shirt in order to make a bigger profit because it had a #10 Totti name set. I’ve had the same thing happen to me when buying from them as well where they applied the standard replica print to a Vaporknit Messi shirt. The prints are different and the shirt would never come with the replica print unless they applied it. I know they’re a sponsor so there won’t be a video on this issue but they are scamming people.
To be honest, if there was print applied to a shirt for sale from them I'd assume it was put on by them especially for older shirts. Those are all fake printing.
Finished the video and realised I didn't pick up a single thing you said. I was too busy staring at all those faces on your shirt. Need to watch it again
Hey Ellis, When are you going to make a video on Classic Football Shirts new scam, where they add player numbers and names onto older shirts. Other UA-camrs have made comments on this, and you see this most clearly on Glasgow Rangers, where they somehow have sourced van Bronckhorst shirts brand new for the 98 season, for example.
I don’t even think it is legal, either. They are selling products based on a falsehood, when they have retrofitted the tops with numbers and names and claim it is all original. Another UA-camr made a video showing that a Roma top he bought didn’t even have the correct number and name font style for that era.
It's nice being a hockey jersey collector and having the team's tagging system in place, whether it's through MeiGray or through the individual teams. One area I have seen that is lacking is team issued jerseys will still have the game worn tag. Sometimes equipment managers will mark that they are not worn. Another issue in the hockey space is the stripping of jerseys. Because the on-ice jerseys aren't available at retail, low end player jerseys or prospect jerseys will end up stripped of the numbers in favor of a more established player. In these cases, it's kind of an honor system, where it falls on the person altering the jersey to remove the game worn tag and prevent confusion. So even despite the relative safety of game worn hockey jerseys, there are still issues and photomatching is important!
I feel like BBC3 would pick this up if you pitched to them about doing a full on TV show about the murky side of sports memorabilia scams and how people are getting conned. They could get you the foot in the door to speak with auction houses about their verification steps.
At the end of the day Ellis any auction house is pretty much in for themselves. As long as they get their percentage they probably wont care. Their just the middle men from the seller to the buyer, cars are the same way. You are taking all the risk. The COA's can be very tricky I agree with you that its insane on their part they dont do some of the leg work researching the item as well. I still believe at least on your Messi shirt debacle that he needs to send back your Aguero that's absurd to me
I only have 1 match worn shirt in my collection. It’s a James Lawrence St Pauli shirt from a charity auction he was involved in. Seems the only way to know if a match worn shirt is actually match worn is to get it directly from the player or something they’re involved in.
Matchwornshirt.com are the only 100% auctions I would trust! At least for the ones I’ve brought through them they receive them directly from the club and each club has a profile on there website sort of like an eBay shop where they can list at any time through there website. There matchwornshirt.com regulate it and provide a COA & a sticker added to the label inside the jersey to verify it
I’ve had to do some crazy contacting and researching for the ones I collect and it’s making me tempted to photo match just in case also as some I’m still not convinced with luckily I’ve spent a fair amount (I wouldn’t say LOTS) but I think this does go deeper than you think and something needs to be separated from player issue player prepared and worn to make it fairer and easier so people don’t get scammed
You would love the shirts from Montpellier in France, the historical president of the club was a big shirt collector so decided to put a unique patch on every match shirt with the opponent team, best way to know if the shirt is genuine
My lad used to wait where players parked their cars on match days and ask them for their shirt after the match, tal ben haim said that if Portsmouth was winning at half time he can have it. At half time Portsmouth was winning and my lad shouted to tal, who promptly took off his shirt and gave it too my lad.
@@dumbdumbmac I know they price way too high but it’s a premium price for expertise on authenticity. They’re more than capable of setting the correct standards for others to follow. As much as they can be disappointing, they have a fantastic reputation
I have a match-worn Manchester United Fred shirt which I received directly from the player after a Manchester Derby. ( without a sign because I'm not a wrongun ). Scrolled through 100's of photos of the game to try and photomatch it for proof but unable to find one, not looking to sell it but just wanted to have a photomatch as evidence but oh well. Great video Ellis, still no word back from the *ALLEGED* scammer who may or may not be called Rony Lopes?
I still don’t understand how these so called professionals/collectors buy items with very little/no proof of authenticity for thousands of pounds and think it’s a sound investment. I mean, you deserve to get scammed if you’re comfortable buying an item of that price with so little authenticity. I’m not surprised criminals have jumped onto this seeing the naivety from the industry.
If messi got a dirt mark on the side of his kit and then got a new shirt at half time and then got a new dirt mark Does that change anything Can he not change shirts at half time meaning multiple at different games Or even why not wear multiple shirts over different games ?
That is a possibility, but you still need to prove they were the shirts that he wore in that particular game. Usually, players in big clubs either exchange shirts with opposition players or the clubs put t-shirts up for charity
Buddy stand on your stuff man your doing excellent research and know your stuff!! I think an auction house would entertain you assisting or speaking to them because it would lend a ton of credibility to the site, especially if you can attest to the authentication process for that site. If they don't then guess what they are frauds as well. Do your thing man and don't be ashamed or belittle yourself!!
Would love to see a video of you investigating and trying to photomatch some "matchworn" shirts for sale online! Would be interesting and no doubt dramatic
I think you really need to consider the likelihood that large portions of the selling is potentially money laundering. As you have demonstrated here, genuine shirt collectors - the type that would spend nearly 10K on a shirt, understand provenance, authenticity and supporting evidence. Lay on lookers don't and likely represents and easy market to exploit - especially given how "global" football is. Art, antiques and sports memorabilia have been popular markets to do this in for the values items go for and general secrecy surrounding purchasing and as such don't have great regulatory oversight. So whilst there's probably people being scammed, I trust most authentic collectors will do five minutes of due diligence before putting down 10k.
I've seen loads of "matchworn" shirts that i would be interested in. Ask the seller what game and they almost always respond with "I'm not sure, got given it or bought it".
I know I’m late to the party but players also sometimes wear multiple jerseys/pants during a match and some are match-work but washed afterwards. Also, match-worn tags are great however, they can be faked.

Player like Messi and CR7 always swap their shirts there is no shirt left in 99% of all their matches. Only few come up from players who swapped them before. All others are fake. The aguero shirt was fake too. It had a commercial nameset
