LYRICS:
I’m a bad dream
Not a nightmare
I’m too pretty for that
Let’s say I’m the last thing
You want to see coming
I’m the reason they say watch your back
But for so long I was like a wounded hound
Backed into a chain linked fence
The world at large was just a big, mean kid
Poking me through the fence with a stick
Ain’t nobody born bad
Takes a whole lot of hurting
Therein lies one of life’s biggest lessons
Ain’t got nothing till we deserve it
Just pray
To the Saint of Lost Causes
It’s a cruel world
It ain’t hard to understand
You got your sheep
You got your shepherd
You got your wolves amongst men
It can be hard to tell
Might find a wolf in shepherd's clothes
Now and then you’re going to find sheep
Amongst all the troubled souls
No more folks who’s most afraid of the wolf
If you really stop and think
Throughout time
Between a wolf and a shepherd
Who you think has killed more sheep
There’s nothing can be done
It’s just the way it goes
First you get to bad then you get mean
Then there is nothing left but to grow cold
And Pray
For the Saint of Lost Causes
Some will say I’ve got no feelings
No heart and surely no shame
Truth is that this has been with me for so long
That I must admit I like the pain
How many encounters do you ever had
Better yet how many wolves you ever seen
You got as much of a chance as seeing one of them
As you do of running into me
Still take nothing for granted
Might live on the best block in Beverly Hills
Be sure you lock it tight at night
Because you know poor folks having nothing to steal
Just pray
To the Saint of Lost Causes

You know more folks that's most afraid of the wolf
If you really stop and think
Throughout time, between a wolf and a shepherd
Who do you think has killed more sheep?
People rip on him for making so much of his live repertoire Justin's songs, but frankly I don't see a better way to pay him his dues than to just keep playing the songs. This one in particular blew me away like nothing I'd ever heard before, it felt like the first time I heard a classic song from my youth.
Wow ❤. Thanks from ✝️
Justin Townes Earle was a great songwriter and it's right that his work lives on in this way.
Did he write this song?
Too right it is, different vocals but so so good. They always say if you make a cover do it your own way, JTE certainly did that with Graceland, omg no comparison, his vocals and chord playing on his guitar is truly outstanding. I know I can never see JTE live now, buy I hope to finally see Steve & The Dukes live if they ever come back to the UK. X
I do believe they meant every word and note on that one.
I like how they rearranged the "must admit I kinda like the pain" line, to draw as much attention to it as possible. It's the darkest line of the song. I saw Justin play it several times at shows, and after that line he'd often start muttering to himself with an unhappy look on his face. Like he had just revealed something so personal about himself, but at the same time feels disgusted and disappointed he feels that way. Rest in peace Justin. Good job Steve.
2:29 Steve you have been my favourite since the day I had the honour of unwrapping your Guitar Town LP in the summer of ‘86. I was a kid with my first summer job at the local radio station. I have been a fan since that day. Just a half breed stuck in the Rez in northern Quebec. Thanks for the music Mr. Earle ❤
Only one who could do this song justice ghostly, and right
How many wolves have you ever seen?
Mean song.
Love it.
Wow! That is a powerful version of one of Justin Townes Earle's (many) great songs. Steve Earle and The Dukes paid such a fitting tribute making the 'JT' record; playing these songs live takes that tribute to another level. Respect.
Smiling like I like tha pain ,may be exactly the opposite, who in this real world would exactly know?
Damn JT could write. Powerful tune. Such a sad loss.
Damn boys that was really cool
I am a huge fan of Justin Townes Earle's version of this and it's nice to see his dad is helping his music live on. This cover seems like a whole new tune to me. I like them both!!
Having those open backed amps facing away is a really cool idea.
Can’t say I’ve ever seen that.
Bet it helps the violin player a lot.
Plus you can crank up all those old fenders where they should be.
It’s pretty genius.
[Awesome to see the maestro posting content. Great song and tribute.]
keeping Jt's stuff alive...
And if I may say, I'm glad you're doing it for him..
🎶🎶🎶
Hell Yeah!
Justin was one hell of a songwriter
HOLY CRAP THAT WAS AMAZING!!
You can say that again..... Beautifully done. Im no musician but i know a good song when i here it.
Wow!
God understands exactly why we stumble where. praying for your n your family's wounded heart. 💔🙏🥀
This is the song i will play for my son ian. He is not in good health he doesnt have much longer and i am so distraught cause i dont know when the call will come to me his passing. I feel Steve's pain. But there's a few songs i want to play for ian that steve sings and has wrote. My son ian 38 years old now, was born with health problems and has suffered with. i guess thats why i love family to be close knit its important. To me anyways. We are here today and gone tomarrow. Loved ones such as family is much more important than money and fame even tho I'm proud of my cousin and his accomplishments. I guess Steve's way of giving love to others is thru his music. I'll take it.....😀🌹🤗✌🌹
You have such a profound impact on my carrier that even the biggest thank you text would fall shot to express my gratitude. Thanks for your support ❤️❤️❤️
@@elizafluorine2001 well it works both ways...... Thats what family is for i love our family and your purpose in life is lifting peoples spirits with your lyrics and your singing. You help me in many ways with your music and voice. I believe thats all of our purpose in life is lifting each other...... Your good at doing that.😊 Thank you steve much love to you and the family.🤗 your comment to me means alot thank you.✌😘🤗
Hell yeah, STEVE. As real as a 44 magnum in a shoulder holster. But we're carrying guitars now instead.
Ya he is working with Joe Biden to get them banned
Thanks Steve ⚓️
Today has been a hard today but I find JT album so relaxing travelling to hospital today on Spotify, yes I still cry, Last Words is truly poignant and to share it with us is truly heart warming. I have loved Steve's music for years, that's why I got into JTE's music, father and son, both talented in their own style. I am getting on, I'm 57 years old, have had Spotify for years, only today, whilst waiting outside of hospital dreading going in, I was sat on a bench & I notice at the top it said.. albums etc so I scrolled sidewards & discovered podcasts I was in the middle of listening to JTE playlist instead of This is JTE.. so I was listening to Justine speaking candidly on Rolling Stone Podcast, it was amazing. Also I had an ephifony, the song At Last came into my head. So I searched it on Spotify, sung by the great Etta James , then I questioned myself , did Justin and Jenn Marie name their daughter after her?
Rest in Peace Justin ...
They look and sound real badass! Love this.
Steve i've been a fan of your music since Guitar Town when i used to live as an illegal alien back in 1986 in Virginia. i followed your music since then in my country. regards from Peru!
You should come back up, seems pretty simple nowadays and if you are a Steve earl fan, you’ve got to be a good guy.
A master at his words! Father at his best!💪🏼👍🏼
Bloody brilliant
You have such a profound impact on my carrier that even the biggest thank you text would fall shot to express my gratitude. Thanks for your support ❤️❤️❤️

Awesome song hits the soul
Damn that’s powerful. Thanks Steve
hi this is emotion, country rock, i like et ...sorry vor my bad english greetings from hamburg germany. i order moor german beer
Fantastic! What an awesome performance....
If that don’t twist your torsion-bars-of-life, what would. Wow. Hard to believe i’m the same species as you musicians… mathematicians are syntax-strummers and semantic pluckers, we hope and pray! More of this please. Thank you. Its like being lifted up in an algebraic kinda way… its all A -> B and exceptions… your music shakes my mathematics at its core - a very good thing. You allow ‘extra’ un-necessary thoughts to pause while feeling-the-song. Nice to feel, what a nice concept…
Powerful, masterful and poetic! Thanks Steve!
I really enjoyed this song steve. Keep them comming sweety. Love you cousin
❤️❤️Time stops for no-one 😭😭
So great to see Tom Petty came back to join the Dukes and tribute JT. x

I can give up on almost anything, except for lost causes😄
Go Steve!
Hello Sarah...
Great Song !
Damn he could write a song
gonna get me that album!!!
Righteous tribute to your son. Love the Devil Put the Coal in the Ground on your newest album. Thanks for the great performance at the Grand Ole Opry with the Statler Brothers as well.
Agree with all your statements, but it was Oak Ridge Boys on Opry.
The JT album came out the West Virginia album - check it out.
Steve has always had the best music with kinda non fitting look. Now his look is as badass as his music.
That ll' do!
🙌🔥🙌🔥🙌🔥🙌🔥🙌🔥
Hello Tammy..
Sweeeeet!
What a great live version
The lead guitarist looks like the late and great Tom Petty.
Tim Masterson and that's his wife on the violin. Great look for him. He has had a clean shaven baby face when I had seen them in Madison WI. This is so much more rock and roll. He rocks the look and I hope he keeps it.
@@kentkearney6623 It's Chris Masterson bud
You have such a profound impact on my carrier that even the biggest thank you text would fall shot to express my gratitude. Thanks for your support ❤️❤️❤️
It would be an honor if I had the opportunity to learn how to play guitar from you.
😢😭🥺🥲🥲
🖤✊🏿🤎🤘🏾
Robert hello
Why are the amps facing the wrong way?
Fuckin A
Amps turned around?
Markbass rules, even in rock'n'roll.
Got nothing to do with deserve.
Hello Anna..
Steve how can you be a socialist when you wrote guitar town? You know that would never fly in the CCP.
He sounds drunk.
hey dummy, tik tok is calling. go where you belong
Sober since ‘94 and Alcohol never was his drug of choice. I think the band has chosen a particular musical style in this cover to honor JT, who died of fentanyl laced cocaine a year after releasing this song.
Id be drunk too having to do a tribute to his dead son
Nah he's dry. He got all his teeth replaced years ago after one too many hits. So his voice always has that weird kind of drawl to it..R.I.P JTE
