I've landed on the Polderbaan several times and it usually takes about 15-25 minutes depending on the gate you have to taxi to. Just once there was this captain, who just wanted to go home I guess, who fully went pedal to the metal and got us from the Polderbaan to the D-pier, which normally is about 20 minutes, in only 12 minutes. Legend shortened the flight by a full 8 minutes on the ground xD
I believe it does matter if the Zwanenburgbaan is in operation or not. If not, they cross the runway, if it is used, they have to get around it, which will take a minute or 5 extra. Starting from the D-pier or E-pier (concourse D or E) and take off from runway Polderbaan (and the Zwanenburgbaan runway is in operation), your ‘flight’ to Heathrow, which is about an hour will take you taxiing on Schiphol Airport for almost a third of your ‘flight’ time. Flying to Brussels, it’s almost half the time. Luckily there aren’t any speed cameras on the taxiways.
@@RealConstructor That also depends on how busy the zwanenburgbaan is. The polderbaan is busier than the zwanenburgbaan because the zwanenburgbaan crosses over the town of zwanenburg. Schiphol has rules to follow around how much noise may be created per day around the towns and cities around Schiphol . And so the zwanenburgbaan (called to the town zwanenburg) is less used. That also makes out that sometimes the planes just can cross while another plane just expanded it's landing gear for the zwanenburgbaan.
Airline pilot here. The issue with O'Hare is that after landing (Hypothetically landing East), they make you taxi down to the far Eastern end of the runway, cross the other landing runway, taxi all the way to the far Western end of the departure runway, cross, then taxi all the way back to the Eastern side of the airport where the terminal is. Then God forbid you're going to the L gates, because then you have to taxi to the North side of the terminal and all the way back around.
The common phrase is, "Welcome to Milwaukee. We'll be taxiing to Chicago."
"That building over there is Robin Hood's barn. We will be going around it in a little while."
ATL surprisingly is often a quick takeoff unless there’s a backup. Landings are used for the outermost runways. It’s a well organized field.
ATL is extremely efficient for the volume of traffic it handles. It was planned and designed from the start to be the mega hub it is.

it is quite smart. Last month I was landing at ATL, as soon as we touched down, saw another plane on the left start to take off.
ATL does a great job managing all the takeoffs and landings. Just don't try to transfer there with a short connection.
Istanbul International Airport runway 34L for arrival is extremely far away when you factor in the arrival route because they dont allow us to cross 35R so we take the long way out, and it can reach 30-45 mins on busy days
Especially if the incoming flight lands to 34L and has to taxii to the domestic terminal. The tragedy! 😅
I've flown with Ryanair. The runway we landed on coming back from Alicante to Glasgow was 25.7 miles from the terminal.
That's called a different airport.

There's a seventh runway at DFW that gets referred to as Love Field (the other Dallas airport) due to how far it is from everything. If you land there you know you'll have at least a 15min taxi especially if you're going to the western terminals.

True. Especially factoring in that perimeter taxiway so the planes don’t have to cross the active runways. My last two flights to DFW landed on that runway, one of which had to taxi all the way to Terminal B.

I can tell you from a number of experiences that Amsterdam's Polderbaan is really really far away!
It immediately came into my head when I saw the video title.
I've flown into Denver many times and it is a non-stop dash from the runway to the gate. I'd rather have that than Philadelphia, where they park you on a taxiway until your connection has departed. Worst trip to PHL? We landed 45 minutes early and arrived at the gate 30 minutes late.

Yep. Especially with 17L/35R. Also im not sure if ive literally ever landed on the same side as the terminal we are going to. We always cross the road bridges

I've only been to DFW once but that taxi back to the terminal after landing was over 45 minutes, and I swear we were moving at least 35 f those minutes. It did feel like we landed in another city and taxied to DFW :P

United seems to always be given the privilege of landing waaay out there since DFW is American’s hub. There’s enough time to watch an entire Netflix Episode!
In the Madrid-Barajas Airport, terminals 1, 2 and 3 are 3.3 km (in straight line) apart from the most used runway for european flights (36R). But the planes have to taxi 5,2 km, needing sometimes more than 15 minutes. Terminal 4 is closer to the runway, but in termilas 1, 2 and 3 operate some important airlines like Lufthansa, Air Europa, Ryanair, EasyJet,...
Agreed. Every single time I forget how long taxiing is (except for T4S). It takes forever.
A flight from Dallas/Fort Worth seemed to involve a huge amount of taxi-ing upon departure once, years back. I've no idea if that is normal, as it was my only flight from there. I'd changed planes from an international flight from Europe for the short-hop Houston connection. We spent so much time lumbering around on the tarmac in the dark, (in a 737, I think) I was beginning to wonder if the plane was doing the trip to Houston by road.
Let me tell you from my own experience, it's no fun to land on Runway 25R in Frankfurt when you had a white wine in-flight and urgently have to wee while your plane is assigned an outer apron position. It's when you silently start praying and counting that the next passenger the shuttle bus is waiting for may be the last. 😂👀🙈

Moscow SVO airport's runway 06L is rather far from the terminal too. It also uses plane bridge for connection with the terminal buildings

Yes. It always seems that whenever my airline uses terminal 1, my flight uses 34R, and the airlines from terminal 2 seems to use 34L, making the taxi good 10 minutes with no traffic. On top of the distance, there is an issue of winding taxiway for 34R due to some radical farmers unwilling to give up their land.

You should look at Houston’s Intercontinental Airport (IAH). The northern most runway runs east to west (9/27 orientation) and it’s a REALLY long distance from the terminal. I’ve never measured it, so I’m interested how this fares with the ones mentioned in the video.
There is a new runway in Moscow Sheremetyevo airport preaty far away from the terminal, and also Pyongyang Airport has a runway far away
Okay, so I know It doesn't really count, but there's a 12-13km taxiway in Ulyanovsk that runs from the airport to the maintenance facilites in town.
Could you send the coordinates of that taxiway, I can't seem to find it on Google maps
@@Olszymanski sure, the town end is around 54.37427997462011, 48.63223599298083 and then it goes north-east up to the airport - if you drop the street view guy down where it crosses the road you can look down it

I have been on a domestic flight into Chicago ORD. I once calculated time it took exactly 15 minutes to reach jet bridge after landing.(The total flight was 45 minutes.....now think actual air time)

Sydney 16L / 34R holding point from Terminal 3 gate 1 is over 6kms
Fun fact: Frankfrut 07L/25R has warnings warning pilots to not mistake the highway as a runway in their approach plates.
The most northern runway at O’Hare I landed at back in 2018 and it took 30 minutes to get to T3!
Stockholm Arlanda has one far away too. But nothing like Polderbaan!
For the exact opposite of this, I think Burbank has the closest runway to the terminal. From some gates it almost looks like you could push back directly onto the runway and not even taxi at all.
I saw signs once there talking about their desire to expand the airport, but that if they did, they'd have to comply with new standards that the runway is at least 750 feet from the terminal, whereas right now it's only 250.
Oh yikes, stand B1 looks crazy close to runway 33. Can they even push back when there's a takeoff or landing?
Denver isn't a great example for this because generally they can create a dual runway pattern for any wind direction where the landing runway takes you in the direction of the terminal, and the departing end of the other is near the terminal. The only real exception to this is landing 34R.
And not that they actually always accomplish this, but it is set up somewhat carefully.
Yeah, it's amazing how nicely you can set up runways when you have 53 square miles of land to work with.
There is also runway 16L/34R at Sydney Airport. Not sure the distance but I know that it is quite a taxi, especially to the southern end.
Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport's 02R/20L runway is also very far from the terminal. Like Frankfurt's 07L/25R, it is also separated from the main airport area by a highway.
Amsterdam Polderbaan is actually separated with two highways (A4 and A5)

I don't have the exact numbers but Istanbul's new airport has had one of the longest taxi times I've ever experienced (though I haven't been to AMS yet for comparison)

Seems whenever I fly AA domestic into DFW, we always end up on the other side of the airport and have to spend quite a while passing other terminals to get to our side of the airport.
So Dulles / IAD added another (3rd) parallel runway a few years ago, 1L/19R. While 12/30 is usually used for departures, it's conceivable that takeoffs occur on 19R from time to time. If this was the case, I calculated roughly 3.26mi to get from a middle-ish terminal gate to start of runway 19R, which would make it nearly the longest taxi distance on the list actually. Needless to say, most aircraft HATE getting assigned this runway (for t/o or landing) and usually request 1R/19L. The south side taxi distance is much more reasonable at about 1.9mi, but that's still significant. Actually if you use 30 from the same gate, it's 3.38 miles, which is surprising since its one of the original runways.
Sheremetyevo and Novosibirsk International Airports have some far away runways. Novosibirsk in particular has RWY16/34 which is perpendicular to its other runway:
What about Moscow Sheremetyevo 06L/24R? I think it's further away from the Terminal than Frankfurt's "outer" runway, even tho they are placed in a very similar manner.
I landed there a few times, it's horrible! The whole airport seems to be under construction.

O'Hare is just a pain if you land on the wrong side of the airport for the terminal. An incomplete list would include American and international arrivals on the north side and United arrivals on the south side

Surprised there is no fuel surcharge for landing at Polderbaan. Maybe they will install a mid route refuelling station for planes to top up on their way to the terminal?
What makes the taxiing time to and from the Polderbaan even longer is that you have to circumvent the Zwanenburgbaan to get to Taxiway Quebec (which crosses the A4 motorway via an avioduct).
The reason why the Polderbaan is so far out is that it was positioned in a way that the flight path to/from the Polderbaan avoids as much inhabited areas as possible, causing less (noise) hindrance. This is why the Polderbaan & Kaagbaan are the 'preferred' runways, followed by the Zwanenburgbaan. Buitenveldertbaan & Aalsmeerbaan cause the most noise hindrance, because their flight paths goes straight over their namesake areas and are therefor least used.
Recently departed FRA on 07L/25R on a Qatar flight....so they use it for departures as well:)
ORD 9L/27R didn't make your list, but it always seems to take forever to taxi to AA T3. JNB 3R/21L also always seems like a long taxi, though I'm sure nothing like AMS.
When showing the runways on Google Maps, I think it would of been better if you had shown them in Terrain mode as the runways were difficult to see.
Amsterdam Schiphol is a very nice airport. But the Polderbaan is a challenge and it takes very long to get there.
Haneda's relatively new 05/23 is pretty far from the terminals
I feel like 18R at CVG is relatively far from the passenger terminal. Looking at flight histories now, it appear everything is on 18L/36R or 9/27 (currently closed for resurfacing). Rarely see 18C/36C and very rarely see 18R/36L used. With the decrease of traffic due to Delta closing the hub in late 2000s, the 3rd parallel is not as necessary anymore.
Last time I was this early, the Concorde was still flying!

I once landed on the AMS Polderbaan and needed to be at the Schiphol East apron, that took all of 20 minutes including waiting time for crossing a runway.

The runway 05/23 in Haneda (Tokyo, Japan) is also far from the terminal. Especially if you are heading to the international terminal.
Delhi. Delhi's runway 09/27 (which is a taxiway now) was quite far away from IGI T3, concourse B. Aircrafts at T1 use to have taxi time less than 2-3 minutes if no traffic at RW 27, but sometimes in rare cases, aircrafts at T3 would go all the way to runway 27. With distance no less than 4 km, it use to be a 15 minute taxi and if incoming and outgoing traffic is there, it would stretch up to 20-25 minutes. But in rare cases.
The new runway 09R/27L at BLR airport is almost 2.5 km/1.6 miles from the terminal! Taxiing definitely feels pretty long.
Ah, haven’t landed there since covid started! I swear on the old one, once one of the Air India pilots just assumed the turn was part of the landing, ran over the lead vehicle and skidded up to the end gate in one fluid motion, the stewardess wasn’t even done with the local language landing welcome announcement! At least that’s how it seemed!

It’s funny you missed Madrid’s runway 36R/18L (take off and landings only respectively). From Terminal 1, executive and Cargo platforms taxiing takes over 7Kms in many cases
DFW is called that because it is actually a taxiway between those two cities. They put the terminals in the middle instead of one at both ends to allow it to be used for air travel too. It's popular with world class marathon runners too as with proper planning they can get a full training session in between planes. Sometimes when the weather is bad you have to divert to a completely different control tower.
My longest "taxiing ride" was (by far) Beijing. I actually timed it to 14:30min of taxiing (not waiting).

Is the DFW 1 of 3 parallel runways east of the terminals 17L/35R? It’s just for arrivals and is a nice little ride including a loop around the south ends of 35 C & L.
I don’t know which runway it was but once after landing at LAS, after several minutes of taxiing the flight attendant came on the PA and said “we hope to be able to welcome you to Las Vegas in the near future.”
@@markodom3841 at LAS gate location is key. JANET can essentially move 50 feet from their parking and set take off power. Poor Frontier unless 26R is in use has a very long way to go and multiple intersections.

Longest taxi I ever got was in Doha. It was on the day of the opening of the new terminal. It took us around 25 minutes to get to the terminal.
(BTW terrible staff over there)
The remote runway in Frankfort was evident to me as our jet was still way above the main terminal before landing.
According to Google Earth, Runway 01/19 at Pyongyang-Sunan INtl. North Korea, is about 2.7km away from the terminal.
The reef runway in HNL is used for takeoffs only. I always added extra taxi fuel when dispatching flights with long taxi times instead of the company standard.
You should make a video on the farthest located international airport from the city it is supposed to serve. I'm sure Bangalore is number one

I actually have been a frequent commuter from Whitefield to KIA. Because of Bangalore's ugly traffic, it takes nearly 2h by car. I actually almost missed my flight, the first time I was traveling from BLR to DEL because of the rush hour.
At ORD, the far north runway, 9L-27R, is typically a 20 to 30 minute taxi.
A friend of mine is a pilot based at ORD. It irks him that a flight from Europe, or a flight that is several hours late is directed to land on 27R, while a flight on a short hop will land on 28C, which is a much shorter taxi to the gate.
I would love to see a video on the distances between terminals.
I flew into Surabaya's International Terminal T2 terminal a few years ago and had to get to Domestic Terminal T1. It is at least a 15 minute trip on city streets.
I expect there must be far more egregious examples.
02R/20L at Singapore Changi Airport. The new terminal will be close to the runway, but its still under construction and the taxi time from terminal 3 (which is the biggest one) is like 20min, going around terminal 3 and terminal one, and taxiing another 2-3km to the far away runway.
The inordinate amount of jetfuel spent on moving planes on the ground on platforms, taxiways and runways seems insane to me.
My brother proposed a solution to this as part of his thesis at the TU Delft Faculty of Aerospace Engineering over a decade ago.
An automated attaching motor built into the tarmac which transports the plane to the runway, replacing the very inefficiently operating (on the ground) jet engines.
Was it part of the DSE exercise? I think his poster is still hanging somewhere in one of the corridor at the faculty.
That's not a new idea. Turned out to be too costly and reliability problems. They are looking at electric tugs now, but still need to be profected and the cost come down. Aircraft often taxi on one engine, so the economics of the whole thing still make the traditional taxing most cost effective.
The biggest issue is the engines need to come up to temperature anyways. So unless your taxi is particularly long, it doesn't matter.

CYYZ runway 05. The longest runway comes with the longest taxi.
The longest distance which I did a tire heating analysis for was 25,000 feet at Honolulu. That's going from the farthest terminal to the farthest end of the "Reef Runway" (don't know the runway number -- an airline just gave me the distance number to work from). My analysis showed that if taxi speed was not restricted to around 10 mph for operations near maximum weight, tires might fail due to overheating in the course of a rejected takeoff (RTO) executed during the subsequent takeoff roll. Of course, nobody wants to taxi that slow when they've got five miles to cover...
I've also heard of widebodies getting tire deflation (via fuseplug release) if the aircraft taxied all the way out to the Reef Runway and then had to return to the terminal. Presumably, that was tires on the low side of the allowable inflation range: The less pressure, the more deflection/sidewall flexing/heat buildup.
What about Tokyo Narita - NRT?

My first landing at Polderbaan was breathtaking with Aer Lingus’ A320 but taxiing from there to the terminal was long as hell. Moscow SVO could’ve been on the list too with runway 06L/24R being the farthest.
Surprisingly, I didn't see DTW in this video. Seems to me if you fly Delta, the McNamara terminal is so far from some of the runways.
Runways 23L and 24R are about 1.5 and 2 miles from McNamara terminal respectively and a good 10-15 minutes taxi time.
Pyongyang Airport has also one runway which is far away
Sydney YSSY's runway 34R 3.99km from the Domestic terminal (4.83km if you use the taxiways, and even further at 6.16km if you come from the Qantas terminal), 4.23km from the international terminal. Unless you're measuring to runway 16L. But they use 34R for takeoffs so you can't exactly use the 2.17km distance to 16L as being "to 34R" given you're at the wrong end of the runway.
Taxiing to an from the Polderbaan takes ages. Also from to Polderbaan to the terminal you will have to cross two highways, the A5 and the A4.

Schiphol's Polderbaan: 2.8 mi.
Moscow Sheremetyevo Runway 24R-90L: 3.5 mi.
Flughafen Frankfort 25R-07L: 3.3 mi.
Hartfield Jackson Int'l 28-10: 2.1 mi.
Chicago O'hare 27R-09L: 1.6 mi.
Honolulu int'l 08R-26L: 2.7 mi.
Those are the only runways I know that are far away from the terminals.
I had the pleasure of landing at Frankfurt on that runway. Taxiing over a highway was a pretty funny experience.
That runway at Schiphol takes ages to taxi from. Always nerve racking when you have a tight connection

Certainly agree with those saying Cairo. And the long taxi times are further complicated if you are flying internal within Egypt and have already enjoyed a 10 min bus journey from the terminal to the aircraft aprons.
“Paris” Beauvais main runway 12/30 is 68km from the centre of Paris. Not sure if it counts but I feel like it should.

Orlando Int is a fair drag when taxing in
SYD: Roughly 5kms (according to Google Maps) from the closest QF domestic gate (T12) to Runway 34L. I know it adds roughly 20mins to my gate-to-gate time when departing via this runway.
What this video forgets to mention is that along with Polderbaan, AMS were going to build a new terminal to futureproof the airport for additional capacity and future growth.
Not sure of the distance, but Charlotte Douglas International in North Carolina's runway 18R/36L seems pretty far from the terminal.

Runway 24/06 in Moscow-Sheremetyevo (UUEE) is pretty far away.
Well some of the Chinese airports have new runways/terminals far away from each other, and though there may be others nearer by, a plane could still require takeoff at a really far runway. I once taxied for like 30 minutes to get to the runway.
36R or 14L in Madrid (LEMD) have quite a long taxi time for departure from terminals 1 and 2
Flying out of Shanghai Pudong International, there was always a ridiculously long taxi process, but whether that was routing around active runways, constant takeoffs and landings, or queues caused by military airspace takeover I'll never know.
What I do know is it felt like an eternity 😂
What reference points did you use? You can use the end of the runway to the farthest passenger gate as the most extreme or you can use the center of the terminal area, or many other points.
As an Atlanta resident, I hate landing on the 5th runway, it feels so far. After this video I now know it could be much worse.
