Thanks for the video. I have 11 doors i was not looking forward to replacing. And this is an older home with oddball size doors. This method would definitely be easier and less expensive
Glad this helped you! And yes, trying to fit a new door into an existing jam is not easy! :)
Tips from experience revamping stuff:
May want to lay the door down on the floor while you place and glue the trim pieces to it, they wouldn’t so easily slide around, or even use a nail gun so the nails are very small and you can fill the holes with wood filler after and sand before painting. Sanding the trim pieces and the door would give the chalk paint a smoother surface to settle in, and light sanding between coats of paint makes for a super smooth finish as well.
(All up to the individual, these are just things I’ve found through trial, error, and mentors to work well on projects like this.)
What a big improvement for such a small investment of time and money! I am inspired to update my own dated ugly doors. My "To Do" list gets longer every time I click on another one of your videos.
Hehe thank you for your kind words ❤️❤️ take it slow, one project, one wall at a time. That’s the way I had to do it through our house, with working and having two little kids at home :) Took me over two years. Although it has helped a lot to get stuff done now that the kids are older and more self-sufficient. LOL
Thanks! I’ve been searching for a good trim and everyone has been using round trim and I like this one the best. Thanks so much!!
Glad to help! Thanks :)
Girl thank you!!! This is exactly the diy video I needed 💛

Hi Rachelle! I'm here from your pinterest article. You are so inspiring! I love the idea of not having to take door off hinges...I'm not crafty at all.. I don't like home projects, this is a perfect start.

Good job. I am going to spiff up the bathroom door today. Gonna use your method.
Thanks..
Hope you love it! Thank you!!
Awesome! Was wondering how to do this for our same door! Question: Did you use all the trim in the bundle? Thanks SOOOO much for this genius hack!
Thank you! I did use the lattice strips in the bundle as it was the cheapest thing in the size I could find.
Thank you! I found this the most helpful and indepth video that I've found on this. I want to try it when we move into our new home! PS.. Your hair and make was gorgeous! You looked lovely without too😘
Awww thank you so much for your kinds words and I am so happy that this has helped you!
Omg! This is the first video I found with these doors. And no sanding!!! This is fantastic!!
So glad I could help! Happy painting!!
This is very helpful. I was wondering if you sanded the doors and why didn’t you used nail guns to install the trims? Thank you and please make more of these videos
Hello. Glad to help! I did not sand the doors, as I used a high adhesion paint as a primer. And I didnt use a nail gun because you certainly could.
Thanks for the great instructional video, I can’t wait to get started! Do you have a link to the Annie Sloan paint you reference that you used instead of primer? Is there a reason to use chalk paint instead of primer as your first coat? Will you be bringing you blog back online, looks like it’s down right now :(
Hello! I hope this video has helped! As for Annie Sloan paint, I would suggest to check out their website (www.anniesloan.com/) and see if you have a Stockist near by. Most of the stores are trained very well in paint and it’s fun to see it all in person. But the reason I chose it in this project was to be able to paint without sanding. And technically you can do that with the other primer I showed, and I have done that too, I just love Annie Sloan paints. If you do use a traditional primer make sure you use a no sand/high adhesion one like Zinner 123. As for the blog, I honestly don’t know. I am working on redesigning it all, but not sure what will stay or not. But it helps to know you noticed ❤️
Wow! Such a great job .
Surekha Zaware thank you ❤️
Awesome!
Thank you!
Thanks for your great video!

Are you using Annie Sloan “chalk” paint?
I did use Annie Sloan chalk paint for the under/primer layer. Annie sloan didn’t make the cabinet/trim paint when I made this video, but that would be a good alternative now too.
Superb!
OldSchoolNoe thank you!
Can you add a link to the lattice board at lowes?
Danyelle Caulfield I cant find it on lowes anymore. But here it is from menards www.menards.com/main/building-materials/decking-deck-products/lattice-panels/3-16-x-1-1-2-x-8-treated-lattice-strip/1114310/p-1444436305307.htm
Omg! One of the best videos by far, so simple and well explained. Thank you for sharing
Thank you very much!!
If you are looking for replacement doors I suggest looking at Dako.
Would I be able to use wood glue to put the panels on the door? Or is caulk stronger?
Honestly I am not sure, you could certainly try. :)
Is it easier to lay the door on a table or the floor?
You certainly could if you wanted to. I didn’t find I needed to though.
Thank you so so much. This is exactly what I want for my doors! Really appreciate the easy step by step instructions and all the tips! Your doors look great. Can’t wait to do this in my home.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
You are very welcome! Glad it helped you! Thanks ❤️
We bought a house 2 years ago with hollow core doors. What if I want to paint them white? What annie sloan would you recommend and what overtop of that for white?
This could be my Corona project lol
hehe, we all need a project right now! If you want to go white, with Annie Sloan you really could use any light color, light country Grey or chicago grey, but you could also use Old White. You could also use Bulls eye 123 primer. Then paint with any white latex or trim paint you desire. Or keep painting with Annie Sloan old white and wax. Lots of ways you could go here with what you have on had, etc.
@@OriginallyWorn thank you! I've ordered the country grey for Monday and going to put in an order for paintable caulking next! So happy I found your video!!
@@TooMuchVitriol wonderful! Have fun!
Would you be able to use an oil based paint on top of the chalk paint? 🤔 I have Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel...not sure if that can be applied on top of chalk paint or just on top an oil based primer. I'm excited to try this out none the less
That lattice cost $1 foot now at Lowe's.
That’s terrible! 😢
Looks great.......good idea!!!! Turned out beautiful.....inspiring!!!! Gigi ....love your content!!!!
Gigi Reddick thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Nice job. What’s the primer called?
Thank You! I use either Annie Sloan or Bulls Eye 123.
Excellent! Any recommendations on how to update the sliding closet doors in the same old faux wood style?
mybestideas1 thank you! You will have to use the thinnest wood you can do it doesn’t cause problem sliding. Maybe consider doing a fake line/design with a sharpie marker, wallpaper, or using 1/8” plywood 🤔
Do you push the board down hard or put clamps on it?
I just put painters tape to hold it but you could clamp it.
As morrisjvan said, you need to put it on some saw horses to work on it. 2nd thing is invest in a tape measure. 3rd, you need to either tack the miter together with a brad nailer or glue/set/& wood putty the miter. 4th is sand down the lathe. Turned out nice but up close you can see the roughness.
A cool trick for caulking is to clean up with baby wipes. Works like a dream and keeps your fingers cleaner. :)
Thank you! Good to know! I will try that next time :)
Thank you thank you thank you! I was not looking forward to replacing my 9 odd sized doors, my house is handicap accessible and I have extra wide doors for wheel chairs. This will save me so much headache!
Glad to have helped ❤️
Bravo. Turned out nice. Real simple too thats the best part. GoodYransformation.
Thank you!
Thank you, thank you, thank! Detailed instructions make it possible for me to attempt! I’m completely redoing my condo and will be attempting this for my doors, especially the interior of my front door which is fugly and I am unable to replace.
So glad to help & inspire you!! Hope you love it when it’s done! ❤️
Hello, curious if the door you painted here has groves in it or is it just smooth? My hollow core doors have wooden groves and I’m trying to see how that would turn out if painted. Thanks.
Hello. My doors are smooth.
Thank you for your video. I've now done all the interior doors. Two exterior to go.
Wooo hooo 🎉🎉🎉🎉 great job!!
Thank you for this awesome video! Would it be okay to use a regular primer instead of the chalk paint as a first coat?
Hey! Thanks! And yes, certainly, as long as it is a high adhesion primer like BullsEye 123 or Kilz high adhesion.
Good question Linguist.
You did an amazing job. Thanks for sharing I'm going to try this out with my kids dull bedroom doors ☺️
Thank you! I hope you love them!
Why did you decide to use so much of the liquid nails? I think I would have just used a dab to hold every 4-6 inches & brad nailed the lath strips directly to the door. Is there a reason why you decided to use so much?
I used it like that, because that is what the directions on the back of the Liquid Nails says to do. They advise against dabs. From their site "For smaller trim and molding, run a 1/4-inch continuous line (bead) along the back of the trim or molding. F or trim or molding larger than 2 inches in width, run a 1/4 -inch serpentine bead (S-bead) of constructive adhesive about 1 1/2-inches from both edges of the trim."
As for the brad nailer, It is a hollow core so I didn't think the nails would hold all that well and didnt need to with using the liquid nails.
@@OriginallyWorn LOL! Whatever works. I have done it with hot glue before & it lasted over 30 years. Yes, I used tiny brad nails that I pounded in by hand, with a small finishing hammer. My doors were hollow too. Just a different perspective. I could never have the patience to mess with tape & adhesive like you did. Good 4 U! They turned out beautiful.
Great video, I think I’m gonna try this soon! Did you use a flat finish paint for the final grey color or an eggshell/semi-gloss?
D McB thank you! I used eggshell :)
Thank you! I want to know how the paint is doing after all these years… since no primer was used!! Thanks
It’s as perfect as the day we painted them :)
How is this $3? The door knob, the two types of paint, the wood panels and paint brush will come out definitely around $50-$100
You make a good point. Sorry! I had all the paint and tools on hand already, (and door knobs were just painted, not new) so it was just the wood at time that cost me $3.
Fantastic! Perfect solution for our doors upstairs!!!! Thank you!
Wonderful! Glad I could help!
Hello, I love your work. What was the primer called again?
Thank you! You could use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint of Zinnzer bulls eye 123.
Thank you! This is lovely, and you are so helpful. I'm going to try with my doors next week.
Awwww thank you so much! Glad you liked it! Have fun with your project!
those lattice boards r prolly $20 for that bundle now 😬😱
Lol! Yes, if not more! Lumber certainly has gone up since this was done!
Sorry what type of AnnieSloan paint did you use. Latex?
Annie Sloan paint is Chalk Paint :) it is made to adhere to slick surfaces without primer :) the doors have held up great over the years. But you could also use a latex high adhesion primer.
Excellent job, and great video!!! Definitely going to do this!!!
Andre S wonderful!! Thank you!
Coming across this video 4 years later & thank god. I have the same lovely, hollow, whatever decade doors & the cost especially since inflation to replace them make my hopes fall. Thanks for the video.
Glad to be able to help! I have been told the trim has gone up since this video, but check out your local lumber yard, and hope that you can find something Reasonable for wood trim cost :)
What a great improvement! I was thinking of jus t doing the top and bottom of my hollow
Doors ! I’m not sure they would really looks like a real door tho 🚪
Thank you!
Cool DIY project. Nice work.
Thank you!
Beautiful job! Thanks
Thank you!
Dawg shit
Just a tip …It would be a lot easier to lay the door down
Yeah, you certainly can. I have done it both and it didn’t really make a difference for me with the hassle to having to bring it somewhere it could fit to lay down :) but do whatever works best for you!
I can make my ugly laundry room door off my country kitchen look nice! Great video! Thank you!
You got this 🙌👏glad to help ❤️❤️
That looks great! 2 questions, do you think the paint will stand the test of time on the veneer? Also, did you paint your nob and hinges black?
Hey!! This video is over 2 years old I believe and the doors look as perfect as the day I did it. So I would say yes, it has held up great ❤️ and I did paint all my hinges and handles black. I have a video on how I did that so they would stay painted also. They have held up great for the most part there too.
What do you think about using a pre made wainscot and gluing it down? I don’t have any cutting tools
You could certainly do that! Also, some home stores will cut things down for you. Although it depends on a variety of factors if they will.
A contractor quoted $800 or more per door for trim and paint. So I came a looking on TY and found you.
That’s an insane amount! You certainly can spend more then $3 if you use nicer trim but more like $20 per door for nicer trim 🤦♀️ so crazy!
Good tutorial easy to follow thank you
Thank you ☺️
Thank you for the video. That is exactly what my wife wants. Thank you again.
Awesome! She must have good taste ;) glad I could help!
did you paint or replace the hardware?
Paint it. And I have a video on how I did that :)
Seeing how you've got the door off, why not lie it down flat to work on it ? Way easier.
morrisjvan you totally could, but it wasn’t hard standing up either. 🤷♀️
Love this! Can’t wait to do mine
Thank you ❤️
Nice. Love the chalk paint tip
Thank you!
What color did you paint the door
Amazing Grey by Sherwin Williams
What was the name of the primer used? I’d love to not have to send the two sliding closet doors I have if I can!
I used Annie Sloan paint as my primer but you could also use bulls eye 123 if you wanted.
My doors are about to be beautiful thank you so much💗 what about the closet doors like this?
Thanks! For the closet doors I did one long section instead of two.
Thank You ..What a nice upgrade! Enjoyed watching!
Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing this, this is really helpfulm I did my 2 doors successfully! But I spent $25 , (i chose the cheapest one)the price now is crazy and no bundle.
Glad you did them and liked it! And yes, I bet the price has skyrocketed since this video was made. It’s crazy right now.
What type of wood did you get? Just a quarter trim piece?
@@Mr_SamuelAdam i dont remember but just looks like hers and thats the cheapest in the store.
Hi did you use the Amy Sloan chalk paint? I want to be sure I’m using the right paint
Hello. I used Annie Sloan chalk paint for the primer and Sherwin Williams paint for the main paint. You could also use bulls eye 123 for the primer instead of the Annie Sloan.
@@OriginallyWorn ok thank you for your help, and the door looks beautiful 🤩
@@jackiemartinez-kaufman846 no problem! And thank you ❤️

No way u got everything for 3 bucks tho
When the video was made, years ago, I did. Yep!
Awesome video . Where did you buy the annie sloan primer I can’t find it anywhere.
Ina Koci hey! You can buy it from me at www.originallywornonline.com or check out www.anniesloan.com to see if you have a stockist close to you.
Looks good... a routered round over edge would have been a lot nicer I think? More finished.
That would be very nice! I don’t have a router.
@@OriginallyWorn Harbor Freight sells one for $40...
Exelent video !!!
Thank you ❤️
Does this door have a little texture to the touch, or is it smooth?
It is pretty smooth, not like a spray finish, but I wouldn’t really say it had any texture either. You can use a self leveling by paint if you want a super smooth look. Or spray.
I just found my favorite new channel!
Awww thanks so much!!
This looks fantastic! How wide were the strips that you used? I plan on cutting down hardboard and doing this. I love the look of the width of your trim, though!
Thank you so much! I believe they are 1 1/2 inches wide.
@@OriginallyWorn Thank you!
