This video has sparked a lot of debate. That is a good thing :). But, while we Christians may not agree with each other when it comes to scientific theory, there's one thing we all seem to do quite well: be mean and nasty to each other. If you would like to comment here, or get into discussions with others, please be kind, considerate, and full of grace. It's easy to get caught up with emotion and even anger when people challenge the things we believe (myself included), but let us remember that above all, we are called to love, and that love (or lack thereof) is our witness to the world.
Worship Tutorials that's where my concern comes in. I have been doing this for awhile and it almost always goes in that direction. It was never my intention to insult anyone if I did I sincerely ask your forgiveness I think you do a wonderful job on your videos, thank you, I think there is a better forum for this type of subject. Don't forget every hurtful comment is a result of your starting this conversation. Don't listen to me I'm an idiot listen to the Holy Spirit and then practice your gift with a clear conscience and don't be weary in doing good
Worship Tutorials amen brother. And I'm down the street in Wichita, Ks. Was good to hear a fellow pre/post Kansan leave and do great things :) thanks brother! And btw.. love your pads! We bought all of them, and use them each week!
Worship Tutorials - As a man of science you are misrepresenting evolution (although I don't believe you are doing so on purpose. Not trying to attack you at all brother!) as you aren't mentioning the differences between microevolution and macroevolution. While I agree that evolution has gotten a bad reputation, it is not without reason. When people think of the word "evolution", they typically are not thinking of the actual meaning of the word at all (changes over time). They are typically thinking of "macroevolution" which is something we have not observed in science. Macroevolution can best be described as the change from one species into another over a given amount of time, and I repeat is has not been observed in nature. Microevolution on the other hand is the type of evolution we have observed in nature as it is basically just adaptation. The problem with this song, is that while it is one I like to listen to as well, it is not one I believe we should use in our churches as it introduces opinions of theistic-macroevolution being God's tool used to create the universe. We should only speak truth, not raw opinions in our worship as it then introduces argumentative matters of faith into our worship. It is our calling as worship leaders to speak truth, and plain gospel in pursuit of Christ, and while directing others towards him. No room for our opinions. Less of us, and more of Him.
The line goes like 'As you SPEAK, a 100 billion creatures catch your breath, evolving in pursuit of what You've said. If it all reveals Your nature...'. To me the line discredits the evolution that we were taught in science classes but rather gives credit to the Creator. The Creator spoke and creatures started forming (evolving) as per God's word not the gradual evolution we are taught. The song talks about the story of creation to the 8 billion of us today. It talks about the supiriority of God's voice over all nature and science. And I will sing the song a 100 billion times
I don't think the line necessarily means biological evolution. It just says 'evolving', which means to change and develop gradually over time, which is what our walk with God, our understanding of God and creation is doing. It could be taken either way, but I don't think the term 'evolving' is exclusive to biological evolution.
I get your point but that is just a point of view or your interpretation. Can we know whether Joel has the connotation to that word as to Evolution theory? or just like your interpretation, he also thought about the lyric 'evolving' as changing and developing gradually over time and not really about the evolution theory?
Evolve means to change. If God tells something to change, it changes. Therefore it evolves. Doesn't necessarily mean the connotation we have grown to automatically think about.
Good point , people are just ignorant! Evolving simply means ' changing- ' so if anyone be in Christ he is a new creation. behold old things have passed away and all things have become new"the scripture says it all ! So you guys argument here are very SILLY!-
Of course evolve means those things, but what if the song-writers intent is for it to mean evolution as in a pattern of nature, and that God has guided life to evolve rather than created it? Tweets below for your comment: Joel Timothy Houston @joelhouston Jun 24 More Joel Timothy Houston Retweeted Brian A Petersen Evolution is undeniable-created by God as a reflective means of displaying nature’s pattern of renewal in pursuance of God’s Word-an ode to the nature of the creative God it reflects-and only ever in part-not the SOURCE! Science and faith aren’t at odds. God created the Big-Bang. Joel Timothy Houston @joelhouston Follow Follow @joelhouston More Context-things evolve, they change and adapt, I DON’T believe in evolution as a theory of SOURCE, I believe it’s merely a pattern of nature-created by God, reflecting Nature’s desire for renewal, survival, new life-from, through and ultimately to-God.
I will say that God spoke to me before He planted me into my mother's womb. And from the moment of my birth I have been evolving to catch up with what He said about me before I was born. Evolution, the word not the theory focuses on change based on environment. I have changed and evolved in my love, adoration and awe of Him based on environments that I have been in at different times of my life. I sing this song with an even greater understanding. I'm catching up to what He said. So will I.
I agree - the church has much more important things to do that argue over the validity of the mention of evolution in a song. However, proper understanding of theology is important, which is sort of the direction I tried to take with this one.
Chris French Science cannot prove nor disprove the existence of God. Science can only deal with natural phenomena... 'God' as a concept is supernatural phenomena, outside the realms of Science
I do not agree with evolution at all, but I love the song... maybe because I didn't take it literally. The first time I heard the song and learned the lyrics-- my initial reaction was a reflection. "Am I evolving in pursuit of what God has declared in my life?" "Am I becoming the woman God wants me to be?" I don't know but in my understanding-- the song used the word evolution in a different way. It doesn't talk about one cell evolving into different creatures, it talks about the power of God's word. This part of the song reminds me of Isaiah 55:10-11 "For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, And do not return there without watering the earth And making it bear and sprout, And furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it." :)
The truth is that he opened about his believing in evolution. He believes in creation and from creation it evolves. I love the song. I worship listening to it. But o believe he meant evolution.
I was a science major in college and I too am a worship leader. I never even thought twice about this line bc I know what they mean by the line. I totally agree with you, and I love this discussion. So good!
Ken Mendeja it’s not just that. It’s one thing if the worship leader doesn’t stumble; it’s another thing if it makes people in the congregation stumble. Both have to be considered.
But the scientific method - by default - excludes the miraculous. Which means if God intervenes, the scientific establishment will go by any theory other than God, even if God is the true cause. This is why the modern scientific establishment cannot be trusted to provide an accurate description of our origins, and opposes Christianity. They are not compatible
Man, I just wanna know why is it that we as Christians continue to look for the fault in everything🙁. Just enjoy the song, worship and be happy. The song spoke about the greatness of God and one mention of 'evolving' and bam!! triggered. Chill fam.
Treston Some people are concerned about what God thinks about the song, since thats ultimately what is important, & I agree. But the way they do it is how they’ve always have been comfortable doing it, or how they came to do it. It’s less-than-optimal, but it is the way it is for a reason. :/
Douglas Correa I get that Doug, but sometimes they push people away when they act like that. God must always remain the centre of our attention, and the song does just that for me. If they have a problem...don't go blasting everyone 😂
Treston, be careful with coming down too hard on people who may have a valid question about lyrics. I love the song and played drums for it just this morning, but that doesn't mean I should belittle those who have questions or concerns.
James 1:18 I thought the line with evolving was talking about his creation evolving spiritually. It was actually my favorite line in the song because of that.
God knows our hearts, he knows what we mean by singing this song or other songs (to glorify his name). And videos like these are really opening minds yet make me feel a little iffy about my own perspectives.
I love the song, and I can easily get by that particular line. The song has depth of thought and incredible development. But you are incorrect, or rather imprecise, in saying "evolution is a absolute fact and it's all around us." No, the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics is all around us. Nowhere are creatures getting "better" and more complex... they simply adapt to environment. It's a leap of epic proportions to say they are evolving in the macro sense. We humans are not evolving either... our species is breaking down, UNTIL God breathes his breath of life in us, and in particular, when he re-vivifies us and transfigures us with his spirit, redeeming our bodies fully. That has yet to happen... until then, this world is deteriorating, not evolving.
While I have no specific issue personally with the lyric, for the sake of unity and the bond of peace, keeping in mind that all things are permissible, but not beneficial, I think that, if we do this at my church, an alternate lyric would be better. What about "growing," "living," or some other word? Any suggestions? Thank you for sharing your thoughts and perspective on this, Brian. Blessings!
I agree 100%. I don't see it as a salvation issue, but I do see it as a divisive one. For the sake of those who struggle with the concept, the lyric could easily be changed. I change it personally to "responding" rather than evolving. I also think that the term "evolution" is ambiguous. Micro evolution (also seen as adaptation) is scientific. Macro evolution (molecules to man) is not...nor is it Scriptural by any means. It makes no sense to clarify the term "evolving" by inserting "micro-evolving" into the song lyrics. For one, it would change the cadence and make it just...well...awkward. Second, there are other terms which have better cadence, are theologically sound, and are unambiguous. As you said, "growing" and "living" are good changes...as is "responding" or perhaps "unfolding" would be. These terms allow for unity without causing an unnecessary hindrance to the worship of others who think differently. Moreover, it does not force acceptance of a controversial position from leadership onto the congregation.
This is probably my favorite Christian song of all time. I’m so passionate about the poetry and beauty of its description of our Father. To me, when I hear the verse “100 billion creatures catch your breath, evolving in pursuit of what you said”, I think of it as things do evolve - think of the leaves in the fall time. All the colors of the leaves change, in pursuit of God’s control, and that is beautiful. I understand where the caution comes in though,, it is a little weird to hear that “creatures” are evolving. I’d like to hear what they have to say about it.
The thing I don’t get with Hillsong’s controversial songs. Don’t they get someone to screen them or something. OR doesn’t someone while practicing the song say, “Hey, maybe this line might be a stumbling block for my brother. Instead of inciting unnecessary controversy how bout we leave the line out. So ALL the church can freely worship God through this song.”
awesome song. Certainly one of their best ever. Good summary Brian, It could also just be that the writer meant "evolving" in the sense of progress, moving, expanding, spreading, mature, developing- just like the Universe does evolving, continuing to expand etc.. Some Christians hear the word 'evolve' and their mind goes straight to Darwinian evolution. Either way the song says so much more...don't get hung up on it all and spoil a beautiful song. Watch the interview after the song on Worship Together. That version is the best IMO.
My mom is a microbiologist with over 30 years of experience and her research’s cumulative impact factor ranks in the 95th percentile of scientists in her field. She also happens to be a creationist and completely rejects the theory of macro-evolution.
The whole song is mysterious and clouded and full of confusing lyrics with unknown meanings, which should be setting off alarm bells in the Elect. If you don't understand it, don't sing it. If you disagree with it, don't sing it. Since when is the purpose of a song to start debate and not Glorify God? (Is the purpose to worship or feel good or ???)
I think you are missing the point. Poetry and Art isn't always clean cut. In fact it is the ones that aren't 100% direct are usually the ones with the deepest meaning behind it. I mean look at some of the Perry found in the old testament. In order to understand it you need to study the context. Same here
'mysterious and clouded and full of confusing lyrics with unknown meanings, which should be setting off alarm bells in the Elect' Not really. Its a beautiful song with clear meanings about how amazing creation is and how God is behind it. Quite simple really.
Evolution only exists in animals. God created man differently, and it is in His Image. God created science! Yes, thats true, but it should not compromise the Word of God. There are lots of loopholes in evolution! Its like having friends in the world, and letting it to influence us. God clearly says that His enemy is the world and its beliefs. Do you know what Jesus depicts about His Church? Its about the leavened bread, though small it has penetrated most of the believers. It is just small, but soon everything can be permissible. We are Christians (Christ followers). If we were to live with the world and its ways, then theres no big difference that unbelievers will distinguished to us, who believed in that same way.
For all you science people out there, when he spoke of special (of a species) evolution, he was referring to micro-evolution (small generational changes in a species to specialize them to their environment), which is condoned by both secular and christian biologists. macro-evolution (large changes in which the DNA of an organism rewrites itself resulting in a new species) however is condoned only by some secular biologists and non-orthodox, progressive "christian" biologists.
"We can't just bury our heads in the sand when we encounter something that makes us scratch our heads." Such a profound thought that I wish more would open their mind to. This is fundamental to growing in our knowledge of a God that is far beyond ourselves. Very well said!
Worship Tutorials i wasn't referring to the singing thing. I was referring to people who differentiate science and God :) just one question though, is there a Darwinian evolution and God's evolution?
Oh no! Science is from God, but not all that contradicts Him... What does the evolution says? A blind force that don't need a creator to make all this possible. People can easily believe in lies, as these church crumble down to apostasy. It's sad but truth.. we have to say the truth before its too late.
We brought this song to our church this past Sunday because, like you mentioned, it resonated with me immensely as I listened to the new album. It was a stop me in my tracks, get on the ground, and weep kind of resonate. Much of the band had a similar experience upon discovering this song. So we learned it and we played it! Well Monday morning came around and I was just waiting for the emails to come flooding in. So far they have not; not in the way I was anticipating. The couple comments I received on it were along the lines of "It doesn't feel like a congregational song, it feels like a performance song." Phew! Well wouldn't you know, United didn't really anticipate it being a congregational song, so there is merit to that observation for sure. BUT people ARE singing it in church and it is moving people towards giving glory to God and moving people towards obedience... I think it just needs to "steep" in our church culture for a while longer. :) Great video Brian. Love your channel.
Hey Brian! Any books you'd recommend on this subject? I've been wanting to dig into this more with some trusted sources. Loved your rabbit trail about this during one of your recent WT live shows haha!
Perfect. You remind me of what I realized a long time ago. There are three co-writers listed on this song, but there is a fourth. The Holy Spirit. If you listen to him while you sing it, bingo.
Thank you so much for the video! An eloquent and well thought out response to the question. As a Christian and a STEM student, your perspective is pretty invaluable to me. I totally agree with everything you talk about and am grateful for the time you took to make this video :) Thanks
To evolve means to gradually develop from a simple to a more complex form. Metamorphosis is a process of transformation from immature form to an adult form. Ex from a caterpilar to a butterfly. And this is a creation of God. There should be no problem with the word evolve in this song.
I just heard this song and it was absolutely wonderful! You spoke gently in giving your opinion and I appreciate that. It is good for us to stretch ourselves and actually study these things. It doesn't mean we have to compromise. I love what you said about how science only helps to strengthen your worship and awe of God. They do go hand in hand and we really need more of that. Even if we don't understand it, we as believers need not argue about how it all started, but join together in the understanding that we are the created and have an awesome and mighty God. He saved us, lets focus on that! Also, I do wish that people would know what the word evolve means before declaring it impossible. There is so much misinformation out there. Once again, a humble approach in your video, thank you.
Well said Brian! I whole heartedly agree with what you're saying here and applaud your willingness to tackle the subject matter. What a great encouragement and challenge for the church. This song is unbelievably well written and uses language and imagery that connects with me (and clearly many others) unlike any other song i've ever heard. Great video, great thought! Keep it up!
Well, I have stated to watch to the video because the title sounds interesting. I love that song, and for me, it’s the most amazing song of the album, and totally my favorite. I’m chemist too, and listen to you talking about faith and science was really AWSOME thing. The way that you put this two things together and the relation of this things in the song was really good. Good bless you and thank you for this inspiring video
To anyone struggling with whether evolution and biblical creation are compatible, there are two clear reasons they are not: 1) Scripture tells us sin entered the world through ONE MAN's sin, and THROUGH HIS SIN, DEATH entered the world (Romans 5:12). How can that be if theistic evolution is true, because evolution tells us that over millions of years and many generations and deaths, we arrived here. So on one hand, scripture tells us sin came to the world before death. And on the other, theistic evolution tells us that it's the other way around, that death came first, then eventually man got here and chose to sin which then brought more death. If death was already present before humanity was here, why is more death suddenly an affront to God's creation? You can't have it both ways. The two belief systems are completely incompatible. The Bible would be in error in literally hundreds of places if theistic evolution were true. 2) The redeeming sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus would be negated and completely undermined because death (present long before man's sin and therefore not a result of it) would not be the penalty of man's sin but rather God's preexisting tool used to create life. The penalty of man's sin would not need to be lifted by a savior because it's not man's fault. Death was already here and necessary to further creation. Can you see how insidious this deception is? Christ is unnecessary in this world view. No Christ, no Christian. Evolution is just another carefully crafted lie with the weight of the establishment behind it. Read Frank Turek's excellent books "I don't have enough faith to be an atheist" and "Stealing from God" for easily understood philosophical and scientific examinations that show how evolution completely crumbles through honest scientific scrutiny, common sense, reason, logic, and most importantly a solid grounding in scripture. You will realize how duped you've been in believing evolution and Christianity can coexist. Evolution is simply a case of "The emperor has no clothes."
The Energy In Genesis Ch.3 It says. Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. The sin was taking the fruit from the tree and eating it, which God told them not to do. Do to their sin they would die. This also proves that sin came before death.
As we grow in our walk with God we evolving to what He Said we would New Creation the old has passed.... that song that line is All God has created it obeys Him, whatever Word Come Out it will not come back Void Read it in Isaiah 55:11 “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”
I'm a part of our church music ministry and I often said that this song, along with Closer Than You Know from the recent album, wasn't for congregational worship but DEVOTIONAL WORSHIP. The ultimate message of the song fully ministered to me when I was meditating in God's presence one morning. Sometimes, in petty issues such as this one, I just fall into these thoughts that some of us proudly label themselves as Christians but are not really filled with the Holy Spirit. I can't help but be sad. *sigh* I saw Amanda Cook's worship in Bethel with this song (look it up if you haven't seen it yet) and only then I knew how it could be turned to a congregational one. It's so powerful! That even though you don't want to be moved, YOU'LL BE MOVED! 😊 Anyway, I'm happy with what you do, sir. I have a light heart towards you which makes me believe that you are a genuine worshipper. Keep on doing what you are called to do! Blessed to serve God with you! 😊
I am pleased to see you recognizing what many people, including worship leaders do not - some songs are meant for congregational participation, some for private worship, and still others perhaps for declaring the attributes of God to others, as in a concert or even some church settings. Many contemporary songs include much ad-libbing that will lose a congregation (suitable for a concert, but not actually "leading" a majority of worshipers); or repetition ad nauseam that may suit some who are in that particular worship mood at the moment, but are a turn-off to others who are not. All these styles have a place - but not all are for the same times & places!
Hi, thanks for this and for your other videos. I love this song as well but haven't been able to bring myself to lead it at church because of the line you are talking about. There are many people I respect who believe God used evolution to create living things but for many reasons I don't feel ready to completely jump into that camp or teach others that they should. Even though I love the song, for me it has come down to the role worship has in the Church to teach people. I have three small kids and they come home singing the songs we sing in church. I've realized that as they are singing they are also being taught. So it raises the bar a little higher for me when it comes to what a song is saying. I would probably even be comfortable doing the song as a special music in a context where we are making people think about this question. Does any of this make sense to you?
J keys....Sloppy wet kiss does not contradict the foundation of God's Word. That's why. Sloppy wet kiss might be distasteful to some, but it is not contrary to the foundational belief that God created man in His Own Image.
There were some parts in your video that were not very clear. One of the questions I was left with is, do you, or do you not, believe in macro evolution?
my thoughts are, yes we should be careful to listen and see the others point of view, but in order to be well founded. We NEED TO KNOW OUR BIBLE. "test everything; hold fast what is true." - 1thessalonians 5:21 its important to test everything according to what God says, and the word is God; we know that. so if we are true believers, we should be careful, but open to others opinions. i personally wouldn't sing it until learning more about it and knowing for a fact it doesn't offend God, because that is what worship music is meant for praising God. sure a song might have an amazing melody, that does not mean it is of God, so be careful brothers and sisters. God bless, shalom!
I feel like it's kind of shady to write a line like that when you know other believers are going to get hung up on it. For someone so eloquent and knowledgeable, he should've known that.
Exactly. In this era where evolution is hotly contested, choosing that very word to describe God's creation has an entirely different connotation. It could have been written "a hundred billion" different ways.
@Chairman Dan It's one thing to see how things may be connected but another to have proof that it happened. There is zero proof of mutations that add to the DNA code only taking away. Speciation is possible by the "God given" ability to adapt but it does not allow for a "kind" to evolve into another kind.
I did not read all of the comments so I may be repeating something already stated. I'm not going to focus on the "evolution" part since it's been covered from several angles. What caught my attention were the actual lyrics: "a hundred billion....so will I" (see lyrics from song below). "And as You speak A hundred billion creatures catch Your breath Evolving in pursuit of what You said If it all reveals Your nature so will I" (lyrics from 100 Billion X by Hillsong United) Although Genesis 1 records God speaking the earth and it's contents into existence, it was only in man that the "breath of God" was breathed making us a "living soul" (Genesis 1:26, 27; 2:7). Also, only we, human beings, were created to reveal His nature. The heavens and remaining creation declare and reflect His Glory and Greatness (Psalm 19:1-6). Finally, while I'm not going to discuss the micro and macro evolution topic, I noted the use of "evolving" in this passage. It almost seems that the composers are saying that creation is in pursuit of the very word that gave them life. IF that is their intention, I would disagree with this notion. Genesis 2:1 clearly states "the heavens and the earth were finished,...". I've heard this song several times on the radio and have enjoyed it musically. I'm glad to have a chance to look at the words. As with any song used for Praise & Worship, we must prayerfully select ones that are Biblically sound and brings glory & honor to the Godhead. Let us all keep praying for Wisdom. ~ Maranatha
What I would add is that when you make statements like, "Evolution has been proven time and time again", it is vital that you understand the difference between MICROEVOLUTION and MACROEVOLUTION. Microevolution is changes within a species adapting to its environment. Something like the classic example of a particular moth species that had gray and white moths, but during the industrial revolution, the white moths were being eaten because birds could spot the white moths against the soot covered buildings, whereas the gray moths had a much higher survival rate, so the species adapted and became gray. MACROEVOLUTION, however, the change from one species to another, has never been proven. And it never will be.
Mark A yep. I should have gone more in detail. I actually did talk about this in the video but cut it due to time. One is scientific fact that has been observed (micro), the other is scientific theory. Theory and fact are two very different things.
I appreciate the response. I am coming to this discussion a little late, but reading through some of the comments below, I see that some of the posters are educated on the subject and do realize the distinction between Micro and Macro, and that the first can be true while the second is false, but the majority have never been educated on the distinction, backed by real science, and have believed the "Evolution is true" lie hook, line, and sinker. I agree this is a good discussion and provides an opportunity to all revisit things.
Nicolas Satiya Problem I have with your “he wrote it believing in macro” saying is he specifically said on Twitter he believes man was made from the dust.
What I commented earlier in reply to this video "Actual knowledge, and the study of, yes, TOtally supports The Bible being true(if not way more than that). But what many in the "mainstream" of this world SAY science/knowledge says, e.g Macroevolution, and the beginning of life that they seem to very much teach/imply(currently, anyway) in public school science textbooks or whatever, being "Abiogenesis"... No. The "god of this world", the current ruler of this age? I'm thinking he is having his way right now, that the great deception may have to do with Macroevolution, "aliens", etc. I like to look at "biology" as serious machinery/technology(but be warned of the "aliens"). Joints instagram.com/p/BHz8Q0kAe8a/, pulleys www.anatomywarehouse.com/muscles-of-the-arm-anatomy-chart-a-104222, cameras, piano-receptors www.khanacademy.org/science/health-and-medicine/nervous-system-and-sensory-infor/sound-audition-topic/v/auditory-processing-video , electrical wiring to control those joint-and-pulley systems, nanotech(electrical motors, factories) www.google.com/search?q=flagellar+motor&rlz=1C1GKLC_enUS812US814&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiPopqopI3lAhVOsZ4KHfRyBi8Q_AUIEigB&biw=1920&bih=947#imgrc=jgJe8dpcakth5M: sciencenetlinks.com/student-teacher-sheets/comparing-cell-factory-answer-key/ ... And I don't think you can get those systems nature. Simply looking at what is, and studying it to find where it came from... Here's a guy I think you might like to look into creation.com/john-sanford Whether or not I think Christians should be singing this song? Well as-is, maybe not(possibly very much "safe over sorry"), but why not just change the lyrics around a tiny lol? I think that'd be fine for this spot."
Brian, I commend you for speaking out. For your videos. For walking in Love. For doing and using the platform that God has given you in such a wonderful way! Love it man. Well done. And yes, this is the perfect platform for it. Super proud of how your using all this to glorify God. Keep it up!!
My take on this is real simple. 1 Corinthians 8:9-11 - But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak. For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol's temple, will not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened to eat those things offered to idols? And because of your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? -NKJV
So in other words, if singing this song could be a stumbling block for others - or could cause unnecessary division (regardless of the accuracy of the lyric), we shouldn't sing it. I'd say that's a valid reason.
I would be concerned that it could potentially become an excuse for things like day age theory to creep in. It's also a controversial topic that needs to be treated with care. It's a shame really. I find that Hillsong has a tendency to release songs before they're really complete. They have a few songs that would be great if they were properly finished. I think this is one of them.
That's very brave agreeing with Scripture. Sorry I couldn't resist It's interesting all these young men insisting on their freedom in Christ regardless of the outcome. Or in some cases because of it. Once again I applaud you on your worship website keep up the good work.
Thank you for sharing your opinion it really opened my eyes. I will be singing this song in 3 weeks and im pretty excited it’ll be the first time it’s sung at my church. I think it’s a beautiful song that just gives all glory to God 🙌🏻
I always endorse the fact that evolution does not disprove God, it reveals his power. The world has taken the things of God and corrupted it. We are all evolving and transforming into the image of Christ not in the Darwinian sense of the word but we see how God has infuse into our DNAs the power to regenerate into something better. That is true evolution!
I know I've commented a second ago but I just want to let you know your videos are such a blessing to me. I recently started playing on a worship team and I really love what you're doing. Thank you! God bless you today!
Thanks for opening the discussion Brian. And I agree that this is a beautifully crafted song that stirred me with the depiction of the overwhelming power that God has. But the word "evolution" seems likely to be purposeful in a song this so well built. Especially given that it would have been so easy to say something else...like "Moving" instead of "evolving". And then there's the following line, "If it all reveals your nature...". Now, as far as opening the dialogue...how?...when you admit, as with most of us on this forum, that you're not very deep on the subject. Would I sing the song in church? Yes, but "evolving" would be sung "moving". Not because I'm personally put off by the use of the word evolution, but due to the concerns raised on the impact of others newer/less grounded in the faith.
+Al Gray thanks for you input! In hindsight, I should have added the following point: if the word 'evolution' would cause unnecessary division or confusion, we should consider changing it. Another example would be how he loves. The original lyric is 'sloppy wet kiss', and the altered lyric is 'unforseen kiss'. I think both are appropriate.
Best comment so far! I was grateful when I saw someone tackling this lyric in what I also consider to be a beautifully crafted song - thanks for that Worship Tutorials. But I'm with Al on this one. The issue here isn't a scientific debate, it's about worshiping the amazing God this song describes. As worship leaders we have the responsibility of choosing the kinds of songs that promotes healthy doctrine which edifies the church. Someone once said the people will sing the songs we sang on Sunday long after they've forgotten the sermon (guilty as charged!) So why risk sparkling the debate in church that you're seeing in these comments? You yourself commented on the topic of evolution being a complicated one (micro vs macro), so why bring the topic up in the middle of such a brilliant awe inspiring song? I vote change the lyric.
Wow! Thank you for sharing! We have discussions in our house about this topic quite often; long before this song. We have watch videos that prove science. It increases my faith. God spoke creation into being...to give Him praise. He formed man in His image to give Him praise! As we grow (evolve), we are used to draw others into the Kingdom! Great explanation! Great song!
A hundred billion creatures catch Your breath Evolving in pursuit of what You said Fixed A hundred billion creatures catch Your breath *Procreating* in pursuit of what You said We don't observe any change beyond it's kind. Ring species are still the same kind. Fossils are dead animals open to interpretation. Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
I absolutely love this. Thank you for this. I'm not gonna lie, I saw this video title and felt a lot of anxiety: "what's WT about to say? is it gonna make me like them less?" I really enjoy this channel (and your acoustic IRs, thanks!) and I enjoy it even more now. What a thoughtful and necessary take.
there is always just someone to destroy a good song... always looking for any word or sentence to turn a true worship song down! busy picking out sentences instead of looking at the entire meaning of the song!! i honestly think it took so much effort, revelation and thinking to compose such a song on a difficult topic such as creation...THE LYRICS ARE AMAZING...
Thank the Mrs for her research, thank you for your heart for worship and for the time put into posing/ answering this question and for checking us on our sanctimony.
Just like the other song that said "hell" in it. Unnecessary controversy. Unfortunate. Also: THANK YOU for establishing your credibility before you spoke. Makes your words that much more weighty.
I don't know if I have an argument here. I've studied theology, I've studied science. I see what you're saying and agree with science pointing to God. But we're to be set apart. Transformed not conformed. Seems as if you're going to the grey area, and I'm concerned about that. I'm not judging but I think I'm going to unsubscribe being that I don't watch the videos anymore. Long story short, I wouldn't play this song on any instrument in my worship team. If the leader wanted to, I'd sit out that Sunday. Not because I'm afraid of it or blah blah blah but I have a congregation that needs a lot of spiritual maturation and growth. Confusing the simplest of words might throw someone off track and I think it's dangerous. It's like Paul not eating meat in romans because it'd offended some people so he refrained, etc.
dus22345 "and as You speak..."- this is creation. And if you believe that God is a God of process then you will not have a problem with "evolving in Pursuit of what You said".. Evolution is not true to all creatures, some evolve, some adapt..we adapt..but all of these things were spoken by God into creation, and all of these(including us) were made with potential..so what I'm saying is there's no limit to our God. No knowledge that He revealed to man that is not true of Him.
I guess maybe a minute or two explaining this part of the song to the congregation would be worth it, considering how beautiful and poetic this is. I take joy in finding beautiful ways to praise Jesus. If, someone at your church decides to play this song... I think our mission should be to explain it privately to whoever you can. To bring this subject to small groups. Not just not go to that day's service and not do the good you could do if you understand what this song truly means. God sees and knows our hearts.
I`m deeply concerned on how you`ve come to terms with `being set apart`actually means. That`s like saying you shouldn`t mingle/socialize with non believers. You're totally missing the point. If you're going to be "too scared" of how everyone in your congregation isn't mature enough or their growth isn't enough for this song.. then instead of staying home on that sunday knowing that this song will be sung, put some work into your discipleship. Step up to the plate be there to give/say out lout the homework you've done. Give the responses necessary to explain those who will be confused or ask questions, but obviously that only means you'd need to do your homework first. It's your time to work instead of staying at home thinking you're doing right.
“Confusing the simplest of words might throw someone off track.” you insult the intelligence of your congregation, sir. What’s more dangerous is a pastor who thinks his congregation is a bunch of dolts.
Have you thought about why people would be offended such that Paul chose to refrain from eating? I think you should take a closer look at what’s actually happening there.
Another option is to replace the word "evolving" with "adapting". Creationist Ken Hamm promotes the scientific research of adaptation with no relation to the theory of evolution.
Gotta say, I'm actually really interested/fascinated/excited about the research you guys did/do. I know that wasn't the point of the video, but still...
I'm definitely not an expert on Biblical creation vs evidence of a much older Earth than most Creationists, claim, but consider this... The very measure we use to tell time is the Earth's motion relative to the Sun (and the rest of the galaxy). A literal 24 hour day is one revolution around the Earth's axis. A literal 365 day year is the Earth revolving around the sun. If we look at the creation story, the 'limits that separate day from night' - I would argue the Earth and the Sun and the motion that God put them in - were not created until after the 3rd day - halfway through the account of creation. So, you could interpret the first three days as literal 24 hour days, or you could interpret them as something else entirely - apart from our understanding of time itself. We must consider that God exists far beyond the confines of our minds and ability to understand things.
Worship Tutorials ...evening came and then morning. The first day. ...evening came and then morning. The second day. ....evening came and then morning. The third day. You don't need any degrees in science or biblical studies to understand that. The Word gives the explanation for every single day of creation knowing that a time would come when the "wise" would question this.
I guess my question is what does 'evening' and 'morning' mean in those first few sentences. Could it mean what we know to be a 24 hour day? I think it could, but I also think it might not. Technically, God had not yet created the mechanics of the universe that make evening and morning possible. There are many mysteries of God that are beyond our understanding - I've always just thought this was one of them. There are also many instances in the Bible where we have to understand it was written by human beings who have the same limited understandings of the mysteries of God as we have. I also find it quite interesting that as we begin to understand more and more about the origins of our universe, it is scary how much it parallels Biblical creation. For example, scientists believe that at one point very early in the origin of the universe, almost all the energy of the universe (which eventually became matter) was light. That sounds a lot like Genesis 1:3.
The Hebrew allows for the possibility of periods of time as well as the literal day interpretation. The word translated as "day" (yom) can mean a week, or a longer period of time. While it is unusual for it to mean something other than a "day" when numbers are connected, one is still able to uphold Biblical innerancy and an old-earth creationist framework. Hugh Ross has some excellent resources that are worth exploring. Ultimately, the big deal of the creation account is not the timeline. It is that "in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." It is that "God said...and it was so." Great video, Brian. I have been kicking this song around because of that word, not because I think they mean macro evolution, but because I don't want people to misinterpret it. This gives me a little more to chew on. Thanks.
I love this song! We've done it a couple of times at church and people loved it, but I decided to change the lyric of "evolving" to "moving" or "living" in pursuit of what you said. This way it positions the lyric more to the Sovereignty of God and less to a place where people would have issue with it. Because.... My main issue with the lyric didn't have to do with his use of the word evolving, it had to do with the context of what comes after it.... He says a billion creatures catch your breath evolving in pursuit of what you said, if it all reveals YOUR NATURE.... so will I. This to me is the most dangerous statement because it says that it's Gods nature to change over time or evolve... this statement is just flat out not true. Maybe if your a mormon you believe that God changes but the Bible specifically states that God is the same yesterday, today and forever more (Hebrews 13:8). He does not change or evolve over time so to say that creation evolves because it reveals something about Gods nature to me is a dangerous lyric...and thats why I changed it because Jesus lived 100 percent in obedience to God and Paul says that everything "lives and moves, and has its being in God (Acts 17:28), so therefore to live or move because God ordained our steps makes a little more sense to me. Just my thoughts on the subject. Thanks for bringing it up. I think it's healthy for us as worship leaders to dialogue over topics like this.
wow i crossed up with this video, because it pop up in my youtube recomendations. I am a worship leader and also i have scientific background, I didnt know your background, happy to know there is people with a objective mind and a clear understanding of what God, and the gospel is all about. Thanks for the content you create in this channel so we can glorify God with excellence
This is so stupid. Because the song says the word "evolving" we have to have a discussion about it? Seems really religious to me. I really doubt that when this song was written they were using that word in a context of scientific evolution of species. It's talking about personal spiritual evolution. As we grow in God we become more like him and what he designed us to be. "Evolving" in a way. Do you think the disciples were the same people before they met Jesus as they were when they were leading the church of Antioch? To be honest I don't even really like this song. But if this song shouldn't be sung, as a worship leader the Holy Spirit should easily help you discern that. But then again, most people here probably don't believe that God physically manifests in our lives supernaturally by way of Holy Spirit anyways.
Logan Littrell Not everyone has the same understanding as you do, & not all churches teach their members such things as discernment. This is for those people.
Logan Littrell However, the us of “evolving” is specifically in use for creatures. I don’t know that ants can receive the Holy Spirit & have their lives transformed & free of sin. I take the verse to mean: the creatures You’ve created are given life to pursue what You’ve meant them to ultimately be. Whether this looks like each & every animal changing their gaze onto God or a whole population producing offspring slightly different than themselves, etc. is not necessarily set in stone.
Who said that is Biblical? There is no such things as personal evolution.. There is only progression, you doesn't have to change, you just need to improve what you have. The word "evolving" even if not taken literal poses can be a threat in both sides. It is just accepting worldly ideas which was foolishness to God.
Everything evolves. Marriages evolve, relationships evolve, churches evolve, myself evolves as a Christian. God is THE WORD and I am always evolving in pursuit of what (THE WORD) God said/says.
Good commentary on why we should consider accepting this song, but does it convince that it's the best we can find for corporate worship? I'm not sure. With so much worship music to choose from why not stick with something less controversial? You may have reconciled it but what if 10 percent of your congregation haven't?
I agree with you completely, with the great number of songs we have to choose from we should go the other direction and pick songs that reinforce the things we know are true. leave the theology to the pastors that is why there there. Do you guys at Worship Tutorials attend church regularly?
Robert Vandermark "Leave the theology to the pastors"? Bro, not even close. As a Christian you should seek to be more Christ like and want to imitate and fully grasp the concepts of the Bible as a whole. Your pastor is not there to be your only source of spiritual food and growth, they are to aid you in that. Christians should feed on the word daily and learn theology contained within the scriptures.
Your kidding right? I was talking about in the church service instead of a worship leader trying to teach theology it is better to let the pastor do that. The conversation was about song choice. But thanks for stating the obvious. Judging by your comment "Bro, not even close." you must have been waiting to add your insult. I forgive you and again it just proves that this is not a good forum for such topic.
I was nervous when I clicked on this. But I'm really glad you made this video. I hope this helps worship leaders and pastors who get antsy about the "E" word in the song.
It's surprising that the word 'evolving' slipped through the theology censors at Hillsongs; not for scientific reasons, but because it is so divisive. I would want to send it back to the song-writer and ask what his/her motives were for using it? Was it to be controversial? It feels like a cheap shot at creationists - (c'mon guys, get with the science - you're embarrassing the rest of us). I would be surprised if Joel Huston's congregation is made up purely of people who believe the 'undeniable' proof for evolution, so it would be likely to create discord there. Unity is a great objective in worship, and that means taking a gracious, rather than condescending attitude to those whose faith you deem to be weaker. The song has ended up being defined by one word: evolution. Which takes the focus off God. In this regard it works as a good illustration of sin - in the same way that a little yeast works through the dough, this word has worked through the entire song. The song-writer has been badly let down by the censors in this regard.
For myself, the song's stance is unclear. "A hundred billion creatures catch Your breath / Evolving in pursuit of what You said / If it all reveals Your nature, so will I". I feel that 'evolution' is a poor word choice, apart from artistic expression, because our minds are immediately drawn to the theory of evolution. It feels misleading. Moreover, the first time I heard it, I thought it was weird that it continually compares us to creation - yes, there's a lot in the Psalms about creation praising God, but God created creation *for* us; and His works tell of His wonder, but our praise is not conditional upon that. That is why I would not sing this song in a church service.
I Love your explanation. It does mean also that we have to get mixed in with the world in order to gain fame in that music. For me, it goes on to be the reverse. Song or Music has been the avenue and tool to either Give Glory to God or to speak that other things. Adaptation/moving should be the right term, and not evolving. Though evolving in some context refers to change, but the word is misleading and points to evolution, even going to the camp of Pope Francis who accepted the theory of evolution and the Bible. I mean, what the hell is that! You cannot put together what is wicked to the good. It is like putting decaying tomatoesaling the fresh ones. What God has declared as enemy will never go on with Him, just as the dark cannot have fellowship with the light. This is insanity and profanity.
I was amazed at this song when I first heard it on Worship togethers New Song Cafe. I wanted to add it to our Church' Facebook page which has many non-churched followers and likes. I was going to say that "this is the reason we come together week after week to worship our creator, saviour and King - why not join us?" I could see my wife doing some worshipful sign movements to it and then I picked up on that line which stopped me in my tracks. In my mind I could interpret that line a number of ways; many have been mentioned here, but what would non believers think? Would they think that we believe in evolution? If I led it in Church would I need to explain it? What were the writers thinking of when they wrote it? I started scouring the internet trying to find other people who had the same concerns and found little - until today. Due to its length I could drop that verse or change the copyright lyric which brings with it its own controversy, which is a whole other topic! I'm disappointed, some great powerful ideas, just maybe needed a bit more crafting?
Evolution is real. People and animals evolve. There is no doubt about that. I just don't understand why you have to separate God and science. If God can create all things, why can't he make them to evolve? So dumb.
Because Genesis is adamant about things reproducing their own kind. God mentions following their own kind about humans and every animal. Now in Gen 6:1, we find the fallen angels went into the daughters of men and made monsters called Nephilim. Immediately after that, Noah and the Flood happen. These Nephilim were "chimera's". They also taught the women witchcraft and sorcery. These Nephilim could alter DNA to make other monsters like horses with men's heads, or things like Dinosaurs. If you notice, the Dinosaurs weren't put on the Ark. We were made in the image of God, not monkeys or pond scum. To have a better understanding you may want to read "Corrupting the Image". All the crud taught to children in government schools is just the enemy corrupting the next generation. You said "why can't he make them to evolve? Because God made things the way He wanted in the beginning. God saw what He had done and said" It was good." If God wanted a monkey to be a human, he would have made it human to begin with. It's certainly no tougher to make a human than a monkey DNA wise. Many Christians don't believe in the Nephilim so I wonder what they do with Goliath, Anak, Og, and the Rephaim. What do they do with the report of the spy's in Canaan saying they were grasshoppers in their eye's. Why did it take 2 men and a pole to bring back one cluster of grapes? If you read the Septuagint, Gen 10: 8-9, it specifically says Nimrod was the first Giant after the Flood. It's genetic. Hebrew Bibles will call them Giants.
The dino's weren't God's creatures, but the Nephilim's. The reason for the Flood was to cleanse the earth of corrupted seed. When you read in Genesis that each creature would multiply it's own kind, the Fallen Ones messed with the DNA of God's Creation and God was angry. Start to read at Genesis 6:1 and By verse 6 God has repented from creating man. Immediately after that God starts His plan to destroy the earth and everything on it. It wasn't just sin. God had lived with sin on the earth for centuries by the time Noah was born. It was the corruption that the Demons brought with them. Manipulating DNA from the Image of God that He intended was repulsive to Him. The Nephilim were 6 toed, 6 fingered, double rowed teeth, giants, that brought things like witchcraft, sorcery, and spells. They were rumored to be cannibals. As soon as Noah got off the Ark, the first law God gave Noah was to not eat live animals or drink blood. What came off the Ark was exactly what God planned to come off the Ark. As Noah's DNA was clean, God had His seed line to fight the seed of the Serpent back in Gen 3. Noah's wife and the wives of the sons were most likely contaminated with demon seed as "All flesh was corrupt" according to scripture. The first Giant after the Flood was Nimrod, according to the Septuagint, a descendant of Ham, the cursed one. He was a hunter of men and giants. We see several giants in Numbers, Deut, and other chapters. The Canaanites had several tribes of Giants as, Raphaem, sons of Anoch, Emim's , Amorites, and others. Goliath was a son of Anoch with 4 other brothers, and Og was the king of the Giants. As the Hebrews approached Canaan land to take possession of it, The spys said they were like grasshoppers in their sight and it took 2 men on a stick to carry one cluster of grapes.Bears don't have to be mentioned in Scripture if it is God's creation and not altered DNA. What went on the Ark was personally picked out by God to enter the Ark. Noah didn't round up the animals, God did. As the rain was about to start, the animals entered the Ark by God's leading and the door was shut by God behind them. Noah and his family were in the Ark 7 days before the rain started. If God wanted Dino's they would have been on the boat.
There is a difference between MACRO-evolution (evolving from one species into another) and MICRO-evolution (evolution within a species). The Bible does NOT support MACRO-evolution (everything was made according to its kind), but it DOES NOT SAY that MICRO evolution is wrong; in fact, micro-evolution is observable--but one species has never turned into or evolved into another species. Anyway, the song is not referring to Darwinian evolution but is speaking about how animals are evolving (changing) in PURSUIT of what God said.
I love that it says "evolving in pursuit of what you said" ... as I am evolving in pursuit of what He says also. Each day He prunes my heart and I am grateful for His hand in my personal evolution x
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold the new has come. The line pertains to how Christ will change us. And how we will "evolve" or be a new creation as we deny ourselves and be like Christ. John 3:6-7 (6) That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (7) Do not marvel that I say to You, 'You must be born again.'
This very issue is something that I have been struggling with for a while now. I am a man of faith, but when I see things out there that do not add up with what I have been taught, it's hard for me to reconcile things. Neil DeGrasse-Tyson has a great way of doing that. Science is incontrovertible, and it can make me re-think things, and sometimes, I realize after a while that I am thinking things that can conflict with my faith. How do you overcome that?
Hey Brian - I'm actually a fan of Neil DeGrasse-Tyson myself. And I hear where you're coming from. I look at it like this - I believe with all my heart that if we had perfect knowledge of everything in the universe - including how to appropriately interpret the Bible in all situations - we would find that science and faith would be in perfect harmony. But we don't know everything - there is much we still need to discover both about our natural world and the spiritual one. The problem is that human beings will never be able to fully understand everything, so we will always be searching, contradicting, etc. But going further, I think that for Christians to throw out science - especially science that is incontrovertible - is an insult to God. How could the world He created not go according to His plan. I think science should only enforce our faith - and as we understand more about just how complex and beautiful our universe is, it should further glorify God.
God bless you brother! Your words, rather His Spirit through you, are so eloquent and gracious and giving. Oh, that more of us believers would have the same heart of unity and peace. May Yeshua bless you in all you do!
I'd like to see more worship leaders writing their own songs and not always rehashing what's out there. You're pretty talented. I bet you have a ton of songs just waiting to be heard.
thank you for sharing your knowledge, I learned a lot from you. glory to God for your life. I am also a song leader in a small church. So I'm glad to here from you man of God. Keep the fire burning! GODBLESS!
Thank you for this video. People confuse the theory of evolution that was proposed by Darwin with the word evolution itself. Evolution is happening everywhere and we cannot deny it. We as the body of Christ should stop criticism and judgments that are based on lack of understanding. science is man's way of understanding God's creation. God created everything including science. The more i know these things, the stronger I grow in faith. Blessings
I was wondering if some would have a problem with the evolving thing in this amazing song. Seems like it's evolving. There is a documentary on Netflix "Is Genesis History" which helped me out considerably. Though if you believe along other lines in creation part that's cool. God has some surprises for us all I think when we finally meet Him face to face. I can hardly wait. Loved you comment to be kind, considerate and full of grace. Reminds me of someone who is like that with me. He's also forgiving "...so will I". uh-oh sounds like another verse. So appreciate all your work and your mature example. Press on
All these years of watching your videos and then you mention Tabor. I was a Hesston College grad and had planned on transferring to Tabor in ‘01 until God changed my path. Anyway, Thank you for your videos Brian! I’ve been using them for a long time now to help me prepare to play guitar and bass for worship services at our church here in N.D.
Worship Tutorials i disagree that the lyrics were talking about evolution
Worship Tutorials This comment is better than the whole video. Maybe you should have said this as an intro
Owen Mpofu i agree with you brother!
Owen Mpofu ohh yes! Exactly! Amen!
Owen Mpofu EXACTLY! People are taking the line to literal and to subjective to what man has taught and not Elohim!
Owen Mpofu perfect. :)
So Good!!!
I don't think the line necessarily means biological evolution. It just says 'evolving', which means to change and develop gradually over time, which is what our walk with God, our understanding of God and creation is doing. It could be taken either way, but I don't think the term 'evolving' is exclusive to biological evolution.
Alex Dunkley agree with u
Its called evolution so tht people can understand the greatness of God
I get your point but that is just a point of view or your interpretation. Can we know whether Joel has the connotation to that word as to Evolution theory? or just like your interpretation, he also thought about the lyric 'evolving' as changing and developing gradually over time and not really about the evolution theory?
Exactly what i am thinking👍
Alex Dunkley I thought the same
Is Joel a bright child that knew exactly what he was plainly stating? Is Joel and guy raised in the church from the womb? Yes to both.
Evolve means to change. If God tells something to change, it changes. Therefore it evolves. Doesn't necessarily mean the connotation we have grown to automatically think about.
Good point Dana!
Tweets below for your comment:

Evolution is undeniable-created by God as a reflective means of displaying nature’s pattern of renewal in pursuance of God’s Word-an ode to the nature of the creative God it reflects-and only ever in part-not the SOURCE! Science and faith aren’t at odds. God created the Big-Bang.

Context-things evolve, they change and adapt, I DON’T believe in evolution as a theory of SOURCE, I believe it’s merely a pattern of nature-created by God, reflecting Nature’s desire for renewal, survival, new life-from, through and ultimately to-God.
Dana Neil , that was brilliant!

So will I.
So well said. Thank you!
Thank you Dee
The World is going to hell and we're knit-picking a word. Science is constantly proving the existence of God.
I agree - the church has much more important things to do that argue over the validity of the mention of evolution in a song. However, proper understanding of theology is important, which is sort of the direction I tried to take with this one.
Worship Tutorials, I believe you handled it quite properly. Glad you took the time to think this through.
Chris French Science cannot prove nor disprove the existence of God. Science can only deal with natural phenomena... 'God' as a concept is supernatural phenomena, outside the realms of Science
Science does not prove. It disproves. We accept what is supported by the evidence, but everything is considered tentative.
Chris French right in, brother...
Precious Amor Piscador yes, you are right... :)
I was thinking the same. He probably just saw the word evolution and thought didn't look at the song as a whole.
Even 7 day creationists grant microevolution.
Yup - I got the same memo.
Evolution is literal because its a fact :)
"evolving in pursuit" ...to me means that the pursuit of God is ever growing, not mankind or creation.

The truth is that he opened about his believing in evolution. He believes in creation and from creation it evolves. I love the song. I worship listening to it. But o believe he meant evolution.
Facts!
I was a science major in college and I too am a worship leader. I never even thought twice about this line bc I know what they mean by the line. I totally agree with you, and I love this discussion. So good!
You're right! Let's be careful in what we sing.. Don't compromise your Faith!
Ken Mendeja it’s not just that. It’s one thing if the worship leader doesn’t stumble; it’s another thing if it makes people in the congregation stumble. Both have to be considered.
I see absolutely no conflict. Science is the study and knowledge of God's amazing creation :)
Because we're called to love Jesus with our mind and not just accept and consume any idea that comes along.
Treston. there is two gods and you do have to becareful who you worship and how you worship
James 1:18
I thought the line with evolving was talking about his creation evolving spiritually.
100% - well said
This is a breathtaking song and I find this verse glorifying God in every way.
Exactly that. Human minds evolve over their lifespan, let alone a couple weeks!
Correction: and as you speak a hundred billion creatures catch your breath all creation in pursuit of what you said🙂
You said it, "science points to an All Powerful God"
Our church sang this song last Sunday and it was amazing. We just simply change the word 'evolving' to 'all moving'.
Evolve vs Evolution. Evolution is a concept. Evolve is to "develop gradually, especially from a simple to a more complex form"
Jonathan Cook Exactly!
I don't sing it. I leave the room every time they sing it at Life Church.
The you are being a bit silly. Its a beautiful song.
I’ve never been more convinced of a song being divinely inspired than this. If God wants those lyrics in it, there in.
"We can't just bury our heads in the sand when we encounter something that makes us scratch our heads."
Such a profound thought that I wish more would open their mind to. This is fundamental to growing in our knowledge of a God that is far beyond ourselves. Very well said!
Also I do think I quite like that said as well(what quoted/referred to)
No way. Science is God's property. :)
+Mona Maceda no way meaning we should not sing it? I agree that science is God's property, evolution included.
Worship Tutorials i wasn't referring to the singing thing. I was referring to people who differentiate science and God :) just one question though, is there a Darwinian evolution and God's evolution?
Mona Maceda definitely not! People just won't recognize God's hand in a man theory. Man is just giving other names for God's work.
Mona Maceda AMEN
Oh no! Science is from God, but not all that contradicts Him... What does the evolution says? A blind force that don't need a creator to make all this possible. People can easily believe in lies, as these church crumble down to apostasy. It's sad but truth.. we have to say the truth before its too late.
The song confused me at first because I thought the Bible said that the rocks will cry out and worship if we do not. 🤔
+Mike Marrero thanks Mike! I agree that the lyric content (how much if it there is) is a bit different than most songs congregations are used to.
Hey Brian! Any books you'd recommend on this subject? I've been wanting to dig into this more with some trusted sources. Loved your rabbit trail about this during one of your recent WT live shows haha!
Jasmin Patterson Try the book of Genesis for starters
Do you often include songs that you expect will get negative results, This is not a way of picking songs that I have tried yet.?
I totally agree with everything you talk about and am grateful for the time you took to make this video :) Thanks
the song speaks to me..period. I love it.
To evolve means to gradually develop from a simple to a more complex form. Metamorphosis is a process of transformation from immature form to an adult form. Ex from a caterpilar to a butterfly. And this is a creation of God. There should be no problem with the word evolve in this song.
The question is, does it glorify God?
Well said man. That was a very articulate explanation that I also happen to agree with. Love this song as well!
When will the tutorial be up for that song, it's my new favorite song.
To anyone struggling with whether evolution and biblical creation are compatible, there are two clear reasons they are not:
1) Scripture tells us sin entered the world through ONE MAN's sin, and THROUGH HIS SIN, DEATH entered the world (Romans 5:12).
Thanks bro!
As we grow in our walk with God we evolving to what He Said we would New Creation the old has passed.... that song that line is All God has created it obeys Him, whatever Word Come Out it will not come back Void
Read it in Isaiah 55:11
“So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”
*sigh*
I saw Amanda Cook's worship in Bethel with this song (look it up if you haven't seen it yet) and only then I knew how it could be turned to a congregational one. It's so powerful! That even though you don't want to be moved, YOU'LL BE MOVED! 😊
Anyway, I'm happy with what you do, sir.
Where were the videos like this for lines like "sloppy wet kiss"!? 😂😂 kidding. Great video Brian !
J keys....Sloppy wet kiss does not contradict the foundation of God's Word. That's why. Sloppy wet kiss might be distasteful to some, but it is not contrary to the foundational belief that God created man in His Own Image.
Seriously! Haha
facebook.com/groups/1534453226782602/
There were some parts in your video that were not very clear. One of the questions I was left with is, do you, or do you not, believe in macro evolution?
If the would have added an R to evolving the only people gripping would be the "Flat Earthers"
my thoughts are, yes we should be careful to listen and see the others point of view, but in order to be well founded.
Emilio Flores Well put! May God bless you, as well.
"And as You speak
A hundred billion creatures catch Your breath
Evolving in pursuit of what You said
If it all reveals Your nature so will I" (lyrics from 100 Billion X by Hillsong United)
Although Genesis 1 records God speaking the earth and it's contents into existence, it was only in man that the "breath of God" was breathed making us a "living soul" (Genesis 1:26, 27; 2:7).
What I commented earlier in reply to this video
"Actual knowledge, and the study of, yes, TOtally supports The Bible being true(if not way more than that). Here's a guy I think you might like to look into creation.com/john-sanford
Whether or not I think Christians should be singing this song? Well as-is, maybe not(possibly very much "safe over sorry"), but why not just change the lyrics around a tiny lol? I think that'd be fine for this spot."
right!
Al Gray,. yes!
Al Gray - might not be a bad idea as evidenced by the "wet sloppy kiss" line in How He Loves
Al Gray try the word "responding". It fits the syllable count and avoids the word that people appeared to be stuck on
Great song!
A hundred billion creatures catch Your breath
Evolving in pursuit of what You said
Fixed
A hundred billion creatures catch Your breath
*Procreating* in pursuit of what You said
We don't observe any change beyond it's kind.
What I commented earlier in reply to this video
"Actual knowledge, and the study of, yes, TOtally supports The Bible being true(if not way more than that). And I don't think you can get those systems nature. Simply looking at what is, and studying it to find where it came from... Here's a guy I think you might like to look into creation.com/john-sanford
Whether or not I think Christians should be singing this song? Well as-is, maybe not(possibly very much "safe over sorry"), but why not just change the lyrics around a tiny lol? I think that'd be fine for this spot."
I see it as creatures are obeying the Lord overtime. I still agree with what you sailed though.
Thanks for the thoughts! I appreciate the way that you opened up and framed that topic.
there is always just someone to destroy a good song... always looking for any word or sentence to turn a true worship song down! busy picking out sentences instead of looking at the entire meaning of the song!! i honestly think it took so much effort, revelation and thinking to compose such a song on a difficult topic such as creation...THE LYRICS ARE AMAZING...
dzelu michello exactly my thoughts. I'm glad Joel and Ben wrote it for/about/with God. They don't have to change anything to earn approval from man
Thank the Mrs for her research, thank you for your heart for worship and for the time put into posing/ answering this question and for checking us on our sanctimony.
Just like the other song that said "hell" in it. Unnecessary controversy. Unfortunate.
Also: THANK YOU for establishing your credibility before you spoke. Makes your words that much more weighty.
I have evolved from a fallen sinner, to a child of God saved by his grace.
Brilliant! I have MASTERED how to sing this!! Woop whoop! 😂🤙🏾🔥👌🏾.
My initial reaction to hearing this song a year or so ago was, "YES! Reclaim the word for God's glory!"
In the vapour of Your breath planets form - is it biblically correct ??
+Taffy Solomon sure. He spoke and they formed.
Worship Tutorials so it isn't the correct lyric ??
Another option is to replace the word "evolving" with "adapting". Creationist Ken Hamm promotes the scientific research of adaptation with no relation to the theory of evolution.
Gotta say, I'm actually really interested/fascinated/excited about the research you guys did/do. I know that wasn't the point of the video, but still...
The Bible couldn't be more clear that God created everything in six literal 24 hour days.
John MacArthur has an excellent teaching series on this. It's available for free on gty.org
It is that "in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." It is that "God said...and it was so."
Great video, Brian.
100 billion x agree!
wow i crossed up with this video, because it pop up in my youtube recomendations.
Completely agree with u! The arguments against this song is just Silly!
Worship Tutorials, you are full of wisdom
Great grace sir!
poor theology in a lot of songs today. at best, most songs are shallow.
I agree with you completely, with the great number of songs we have to choose from we should go the other direction and pick songs that reinforce the things we know are true. leave the theology to the pastors that is why there there. Do you guys at Worship Tutorials attend church regularly?
+Robert Vandermark we're all staff worship leaders so we lead every week in our church.
Thanks for the reply
Thx Brian! It's interesting to hear from someone with both a background in leading worship and a background in science on this topic.
That's right.. Stand firm in the Faith!
That is EXACTLY what i believe as well. I wish he would've said that in terms of evoluation..the difference between macro and micro.
Great video. Nice speaking voice
what if we are wrongly interpreting the intended meaning of that sentence? Has anybody approached the songwriter and asked what he or she meant?
I love that it says "evolving in pursuit of what you said" ... as I am evolving in pursuit of what He says also. Each day He prunes my heart and I am grateful for His hand in my personal evolution x
Amen! Yes!!!
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold the new has come.
The line pertains to how Christ will change us. And how we will "evolve" or be a new creation as we deny ourselves and be like Christ.
John 3:6-7
(6) That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Thanks a lot, Brian! God bless!
Dr Kent Hovind teachings has a few teachings on evolution and I think they will give us a very clear picture on evolution as Christians
Great explanation ❤️ really love it! Thanks and God bless you always! 🙏🏻
God bless you brother! Your words, rather His Spirit through you, are so eloquent and gracious and giving. Oh, that more of us believers would have the same heart of unity and peace. May Yeshua bless you in all you do!
Whether evolution is true or not. This song brings glory to God, and we should sing it as a result of that.
GODBLESS!
I loved that you posted this video, I agree with you and your views
