Malaysia closer to buying Kuwait jets

- Malaysia is close to acquiring F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets from Kuwait as part of its efforts to enhance its air force capabilities.
Malaysia’s Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, met with the Kuwaiti Ambassador to discuss this potential purchase, which could significantly boost Malaysia’s defence resources.
The New Straits Times understands details of the procurement are expected to be on the cards during Khaled’s visit to Kuwait that began yesterday.
The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) had already sent a technical team to evaluate the jets in June, and reports indicate the aircraft are in good condition with relatively lower operational hours.
In August, Khaled said Malaysia was working with Kuwait on the procurement.
He said Malaysia was waiting for Kuwait's response, adding that from a technical standpoint, the Hornet fighter jets were suitable for RMAF's needs.
Experts believe acquiring the F/A-18C and F/A-18D Hornets would improve the RMAF's capabilities, particularly in the South China Sea, where greater militarization is taking place.

many in the comments are not aware, these F-18 engine are compatible with out new FA-50 fleet. both made by Lockheed thus easier to maintain locally once acquired. coupled with low flight hours its a good acquisition till our next buy in 2035, presumably 5th gen fighters
Hornets are by Boeing and Lockheed competitior
F18 hornet and super Hornet are made by Boeing, Lockheed competition. 😅
@@truthful3777both use General Electric F414 engune
Bro out here giving false info 😂😂. That’s pretty embarrassing lmao. Simple google search says F18 is made by Boeing after they acquired the Northrop.
Hornet and FA50 used the same engine General Electric F404 Turbofan engine
_Bagi aku komen pun tak guna sebab kajaan sudah buat keputusan, cuma aku nak tau berapa harga tawaran sebenar bagi jet² tersebut?. Kasi clear._
Avionics and weapons can be easily upgraded and maintained thus achieving cost optimization for RMAF.
No issue of buy just make sure if economical and cost effective to buy from Kuwait.

We are doing well economically compared to majority of countries in the world.
If a jet fighter cost usd50 mil each (rm210 mil). With app. RM4.5bil, Malaysia can get 20 units.
Worth buying for national security.

So many complaints against purchasing 2nd hand fighter jet? Don't you know that we don't have enough money? Huge chunk goes to petrol subsidy. With GST no longer in the picture we lost an equivalent of RM70 billion of which could be easily spend on 100 nos of JAS Gripen (USD8 billion)

F404 engine already hit production issue in US, they can't produce even for India because the production line has stopped for a long time, the one they provided to South Korea were reserved. To restart the production line is very costly, any country still stuck with the F404 have to wait for a long time as they would need to retool and also lack of raw materials due to murica sanction Russia and China. This year alone they have not even produced one F404 engine. Purchasing this old fighter planes will bound to hit into major issues on spare parts availability. Murica now doesn't produce this anymore due to shifting requirements to F-35. the navy have retired their F-18, those on the ground are just mainly used for spare parts for those that are still in service
False. US marines still using until 2035
Good buy by Malaysia, the F/A 18 Hornet is very reliable after all.
These jet is better compared to Super hornet after major upgrading. For those dont know about this jet dont complaint.
In aerial warfare, it’s a lot more important if the aircraft can support the most modern avionics and missiles as it’s a see first shot first strategy. Modern jet fights without both seeing each others as they fired missiles from kilometres away. Soo as it stand can these fighters support such capability and also does the TUDM have AWACS capability to better coordinate and detect foes for its fighter. Don’t just focus on acquiring jets as support aircraft such as AWACS(airborne warning and control system) plays a lot more pivotal role in the modern aerial warfare, as seen by most of our peer neighbour in the region acquiring said aircrafts but yet TUDM still lacks any of it.

The only fighter jets purchased by RMAF that is fully functional are the Hornets. The MiGs are mostly non-air worthy.
Su-30mkm is more beyond "fully functional", RMAF mainly uses Su-30mkm whenever they train with FPDA Allies and US.
You not aware about su30 mkm?

If successful, we are asean's champion for jets
Already famous in ASEAN for losing an entire commercial plane with hundreds of passengers! And along with the recent Navy ship hit a rock and sung. It mean this country does not have a good track records on aviation and oceanic nautical.
put it in perspective la, while its second hand it has fairly low air milage. The F18 is also far more easier to maintain and the fact its still up in the air in Malaysia when the mig 29 has been decommission says alot. Also the Korean FA-50 jets we acquired is a good cross over to the F-18 since it has a similar engine making our maintenance and spare parts less of a nightmare. Since we cant afford nor will the US ever sell us F35 the F-18 is good enough for now.
Also our budget for defense so kecik and so much put into subsidies and the country is at 260.2 billion USD in debt maybe this is a good move if u balance all the factors fiscal deficit, a proven fighter, and easier to maintain a single family of fighters.
Fighter jets durability and reliability are not measured with air mileage...it's not the same like a car...their airframes and engines are measured with flying hours and age.
For saving, it's a must ..

Then why is Kuwait selling them?
The truth to be to told is:
All US made warplanes can be track and disabled remotely by the manufacturers.
They also need an authorization code in order to function.
Is this the reason why Kuwaiti are selling them?

FFS...what kind of mentality do you have ? It's like you are willing to stay in a house without basic security features such as padlocks, doors and grills..are you willing to do it ?
First of all, our armed forces policy is defence and not going on offence. No matter what, defence tech must be upgraded to keep our country border. After much due deligence, top brass decided Kuwaiti's F18 Hornets meet up the criteria for a decade or two. American wont sell their top fighters to any countries whom wish to buy except for closest allies. Buying Kuwait's jets saves alot of money since Msia has a squardon and it's easier to maintain the new procument.
