I wish I kept my Bachman Books omnibus I bought in the 80s. It’s hard to come by nowadays.

I am surprise they have yet to make it into a movie yet. It is possible one of the earliest teenagers in a death game books. I think I was a freshmen in high school when I first read it and just ate it up. I had never read anything like it before.

I have that same edition of Bachman and plan to read Running Man as my first book of 2025 since it takes place in that year. Rage is no longer published (my copy has that book). Hadn't thought of this collection of books for Garbaugust but will consider reading one of the books too Enjoy!

It looks like Roadwork came out in 1981 and in 1987 Stephen King's small press published a novel by Don Robertson called The Ideal, Genuine Man which, in my memory, is pretty much the same book although maybe more literary. Not sure if that's true or if my memory has just melded the stories together. Either way, yes, Bachman is suitably GarbAugust-worthy!

Maybe Bachman was the pseudonym of a respected author of "high" literature, you know, guys like Updike or Philip Roth, who needed an outlet for their violent side, somethink like a "dark half", you know? just a thought, don't hate me ...

I never finished 'Roadwork' after many attempts over the decades.
My mom found 'Thinner' so trashy she wouldn't let me read Bachman for a good number of years. I should change that to buy them. I did sneak them; in that required 15 minute after lunch reading period at school.

I saw a video recently, not sure if it was Media Death Cult or Bookpiled, who talked about Rage - the author 👀 has allowed it fall out of print, even though it was a fairly big hit, as it was linked to a couple of early school mass shootings.

The information that I'm about to present, is not widely known. Perhaps I should refrain from continuing. But alas, I feel that the truth needs to be told. Richard Bachman, is indeed alive. His current whereabouts are a little unclear, but as far as I can tell, he is living just off the coast, in a tiny village in the state of Maine. He continues to write, and his books have been on the bestsellers list for many years. Now, I need to make sure we are on the same page here. Remember, you did not hear this from me but, Mr. Bachman has chosen to use a pseudonym. All I can safely say here is that the initials are SK. I leave the rest up to you.

Lol where did they even get that picture of him? I have heard that The Long Walk is pretty good, and that The Running Man is supposed to be better than the movie, not that that is a high bar. Ill have to check a couple of these out. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on them.

  • @Paul_Bond.

They are all pretty good Michael, lucky you got that edition with Rage in it, King has decided it will never be reprinted in new editions due to it's links with real school shootings, which unfortunately appear to be true. I wouldn't call them garbage Michael, they are efficient thrillers that hold some nuggets of gold, especially The Long Walk and The Running Man which counts down from 100 to zero, according to King he wrote this in a week!
It bears very, very little resemblance to the 1987 movie which crushed me at the time but I hold out hopes for the proposed Edgar Wright remake.

I read "Thinner" years ago and have not been able to eat a strawberry pie since. Nor strawberry shortcake. Or strawberry tarts.
Stephen King was a close friend of Bachman's and he has confirmed many times that Bachman is dead. Unless someone took Bachman's body to the Pet Sematary.

I am that Bachman. That said he is the type of writer they should be reading in school. His books are easy enjoyable reads that by and large well paced. I read more than a few books in my day that seemed to just go off in a dozen directions. I have listened to myateries fallen a sleep and woke up a half hour to and hour later and realized plot wise I have misses nothing. Not with the late great Richard Bachman he wrote no filler novels. Amazing tales that grabbes you and never let go. More people should read him.

The covers to Roadwork are deceiving. I looked at about 20 covers of Roadwork from around the world and I started to form the plot in my head based on the cover art. My expectations were not met. The book was not what I expected. I was disappointed. A year later, I read it again with my expectations properly aligned and I loved it for what it was was.

These oversimplified synopses of The Long Walk are designed to peak your interest and get you to the buy the book, but they deviate from the truth and just make stuff up. Future America could have passed when the book was published in 1979, but the book is dated in 100 different ways. It's clearly set in the past, although the tech they use to track walking speed, still hasn't been invented. It does contain more than 20 examples of alternate histories and alternate reality, so it's an alternate reality novel.

Ok, maybe I've missed something my whole life. I don't understand why authors, especially well known ones, use pen names at all. I understand writers doing this when there's some need to hide their identity. (Especially in other countries.) But why do authors use pen names when they are entirely open about the fact that it's a pen name? What is the purpose/benefit of doing this?
