It took me a while as a kid to realize some comics were way better than others and you had to start paying attention to who was writing as well as who was drawing. Roy Thomas did so much great work.
In Queen of the Black Coast, when Conan is drugged by the Black Lotus flower, he dreams of an age and a people that preceded his. These mystical, magical elements of REH stories have always enchanted me.
John Buscema was so great, just casually cranking out monthly comics with wonderful art. I was spoiled as a kid being able to pick this book up monthly.
Some really great artwork for this story! I am planning to finish reading the complete Chronicles of Conan by Howard for Cimmerian September, can't wait to dive into the comics afterwards! Great overview as always!
Oh yeah. That was a great prose story and Thomas / Buscema did a great job adapting it. From what I have read, in the 50s a South American publisher had a comic series ( unauthorized) based on Belit and a blond Conan, derived from this story.
It wasn't wrong for Roy Thomas & John Buscema to portray Conan shedding a tear in that final panel. REH described Conan as a man of gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth. Throughout his storied life, he experienced more death -- of comrades-in-arms, etc. -- than most people, and losing friends and loved ones was bound to add to the "gigantic melancholies" this barbarian from mist-haunted Cimmeria would feel. Not that he was a blubbering pity-partier going "Waaaaa!!!" like a child throwing a tantrum, but more like every so often needing to go off by himself and brood, processing his grief and loss in such a way that nobody dared to bother him when he was having a 'black mood'. Conan undoubtedly was -- in modern parlance -- a bipolar personality.
Every time I step foot on a pirate ship, a beautiful woman does an exotic dance. After the dance she shouts “ love me”, and because I’m a slave to tradition, I must oblige.
I remember EXACTLY where I was when I bought this. I bought it in a bookstore along with the SPELL OF CONAN anthology. Little did I know that Roy would be gone less than two years later... BTW, Howard borrowed Belit's 'mating-dance' straight from Merritt's THE SHIP OF ISHTAR. 'Ishtar' debuted a century ago this November. An early classic of American fantasy.
My parents bought these original issues for me back when they were being released. Still have them. (Unfortunately, I wrote in most of them, so they aren't really anything but sentimental in value.) I re-read the final issue SO MANY TIMES as a kid!
This was a great run. I first read it in Conan Saga around 1995, when they were reprinting those early issues. I liked that they stretched out the storyline for QOTBC.
As much as I love this version of the story, I think Dark Horse did it best. Did you know that the first appearance of Conan in comics was in the early 60s in the pages of a Mexican comic book "La Reina de la Costa Negra"? Belit was the main character of the series and featured Conan as a supporting character.
Great video - it’s amazing to see such a special commentary on Robert E. Howard and how his books/creation were translated so wonderfully into Marvel Comics. As an avid reader/collector of both books and the comics this is just great. Thank you.
I love the idea of 42 issues of Conan teamed up with his pirate soulmate, it seems so unusual for him to have a companion for so long! I wonder if it fleshes out the other pirates - QotBC only names N'Gora and barely has anything about him - it'd be nice if there was a little more nuance then the blacks who idolize and obey their white marauder goddess - but it's 70's marvel so I won't hold my breath. What you showed is cool, but I was hoping you'd talk more about that interstitial issues, rather then the story we know pretty well know. Maybe next/another Wednesday?
This was the president, the reason we started confiscating weapons. Everyone had too much awe for the law to think of attacking a judge before Conan showed us that is optional.
Roger probably remembers when Conan was in history books 📚
Quentin Tarantino loved this storyline, and would have taken that story on if he'd ever made a film of Conan.
See his Joe Rogan chat.

This run, 58-100, is my favourite run in the Marvel Conan comics. Nicely done!

I remember how moving the end was when I listened to it off of youtbe.

That was a great story arc, and I agree that the Buscema and Thomas team was the best ever on any Conan comic.
This comic book issue probably changed my life. I am still not over it.
Your name has been entered for the Inaugural Book Tube Hall of Fame which will be announced in 2025. Well deserved and congratulations.
Was it me or Roger?

When helost his greatest love Belit!

That's a great omnibus, for a great story. Might be the best you've shown on Comic book Wednesday. 🤔
@@DDB168 at last, a decent episode!
Brilliant video about a brilliant adaptation-- well done, sir
Thanks!
Great video on a great comic!!!

I really need to visit a pirate ship.

@@SEKreiver I hear good things about The Ship of Ishtar. I have a paperback of that I need to read.

One of my favorites. I did a video on this last week.

I have heard of the Mexican comic but I’ve never seen it. I did read the Dark Horse version of this story starring skinny emo Conan. I wish I hadn’t.
Behind every good man… What a story! Thanks for sharing Michael

Spooky-ass swamp.
Belit's death in this series was as hard hitting as Elektra's was in Daredevil.

nearly all Conan stories first turned up in legendary Weird Tales pulp magazine and are now super pricey !
If only some idiot policeman hadn't let Conan carry his sword into the courtroom...
This was the president, the reason we started confiscating weapons. Everyone had too much awe for the law to think of attacking a judge before Conan showed us that is optional.
Queen of the Black Coast is definitely my favorite REH story. Belit will always be the best Conan girl.
No spoilers. This is a hard hitting story
I remember a massive oversized and expensive comic book in my newsagents when I was a kid and I'm sure it was this one.
3:25 why is Conan dressed up as Thor?
@@FateHasWritersBlock because Thor is a fashion icon.
