Thank you Catherine. Mentioning that the surgery is a tool in your weight loss journey is so important. A wonderful 40 minutes of honest information. I have dealt with weight issues and about 7 years ago successfully followed a very strict eating regime with a nutritionist. I no longer refer to what I eat as “diet”. It is a mental game but it helps. Your explanation about the sugar was very interesting and enlightening. Sugar is very addictive and just not good for our bodies.

But I have continued changing what I eat to include mostly only whole food fruits and vege, whole grains, and lean meat, and am trying hard to stop snacking between meals. I’m also so much more active than pre-surgery.You are so right that this surgery is a tool, not a magic pill. I’m so happy that you are feeling so much better, huzzah! Oh boy, kudos to you. I had the same surgery 18 years ago. I lost 175 pounds. I was one of the unlucky ones that has had so many complications since then. I feel awful on a daily basis. You made all of the great points why gastric bypass works. My body just fights against it and the scar tissue my body produces with each surgery (10 post gastric bypass) I have doesn’t help. Doctors are on board and helping me through the complications. Thank you for your video. Good luck!!!!

    • @mysteriousmemt

    • @shelly3251
      @shelly3251 2 роки тому

@@mysteriousmemt A year after my surgery I had my gallbladder out and a hernia repaired. Two days later I was back in for surgery because a clip failed and I had bile leaking all over. The next year I had scar tissue around my bowel that had to be removed. Then after that my appendix ruptured but because of all the scar tissue they didn't find it right away so I ended up getting an infection. Then I had a hysterectomy because my body doesn't absorb iron so I was extremely anemic. I had to have iron infusions, I take b12 injections and vitamin d3 because my levels are so low. Two years ago I has emergency surgery because I had a intussusception in my bowel (telescoping of the small intestine) I had to have some of my small intestine and stomach removed. After that the mesh from my hernia surgery got infected and I had to be reopened then wear a wound vac for almost 4 months. I still have to face surgery to have the mesh removed because it hangs on to the bacteria and continue to cause complications. I also had a baby because I was told I could 2 years post surgery. Worst pregnancy-I had so many complications and needed to be closely monitored because I couldn't eat enough to sustain both of us. Now I am working with a Gastroenterologist because they are trying to figure out what other issues I'm having because my labs keep coming back abnormal. On a good note I'm alive to tell about it.

Catherine, I just found your channel & I had to say that you are so lovely! Such a beautiful personality, an instant sub from me!
I've struggled with my weight since I was a teen as well, which became even worse after I got clean from substances (swapped drug addiction for food addiction). I've done all the diets, yo-yo back & forth, got diagnosed with type 2 last March & lost 60lbs from cutting out sugar + taking Ozempic. Even still, I'm at 290 lbs, & the Ozempic isn't working like it was in the beginning. I'm 36, have PCOS & I'm single so I likely won't have children (which is traumatic + I also has a miscarriage in 2018). I just feel like this might be a sign to seriously consider the surgery.
I can't stay so unwell for another year.

It opened my eyes on the reasons why someone would go through such drastic measures, about the struggles (fertility etc), the continuous diet change that goes with it. That it is a “tool” and you now have to work with it to not put it all back on. Honestly, I told my psychologist that I’m not necessarily scared of the surgery itself, but yet how I’m going to react emotionally after the surgery not being able to “eat my feelings” or not being able to have certain foods/drinks. Did you struggle with that at all? Thank you for your full honesty and being so organic it’s so helpful for someone like me on this journey, as well.

I totally appreciate you sharing your story. I’m just a little concerned that it’s gonna put people off trying to lose weight. Things like set points are theory’s and sometimes people use it as an excuse not to try. I totally agree that surgery is a very viable option for a lot of people but let’s make sure we encourage people to try regardless if that’s what they want. The 95% statistic is an old study statistic and is mostly based on fad diets. I don’t want to be negative I’m just worried people might not see a chance to lose weight without surgery.

  • @ColdBluex

Wonderful update! It's fantastic to see all your progress! 💪💪💪💪
I think that the two most important things you should (or better must) have not to risk to transform the chance into a failure is to seek proper help from at least a nutritionist (specialized in bariatric diet regimen) and, even more, a psychologist (specialized in eating disorders).
The nutritionist will find the best diet for you, support and help you especially during the first month, when “your body, your stomach and your mind are not aligned yet”) and the psychologist will dive with you into the reason why you developed an eating disorder and help you untangle the matter.
For my partner, for example, the cause was a subtle but toxic family environment, with a narcissistic and quite authoritarian father. We were born in the 80s, so some “toxic behaviors” weren't considered that back in those days and in Italy it was pretty common to find strict parents. So it wasn’t easy to consider him as toxic as he actually is. He still remains a person who worked all his life to ensure his kids a very good social class (he was born very poor), sacrificing a lot and still today he has no clue about the harm his behavior brought to all the family. But, obviously, this doesn’t mean he holds no “guilt”.
To fully understand him, probably we would have to dig into his whole life and maybe find other traumas.
This to say that if you treat only the consequences of a problem, you don’t get rid of the problem in itself and speaking about eating disorders, even with a bariatric surgery, you can still fall into very bad habits (we have at least a couple of friends who did the same surgery and not only they did lost very few weight, but they have gained even more because they didn’t seek help for the disorder).
It’s fascinating to see how two different individuals, in two different countries, with two different food cultures, have almost identical results through two different types of surgery! :D
My partner had their surgery at the beginning of February, so they’re about six and a half months into it, they started from around 140kg (almost the same weight as yours) and they suffered from binge eating.
You did the gastric bypass, they did the sleeve gastrectomy.
You lost 89 pounds, they lost 92 (but it was at the beginning of July. In Italy August is pretty much a dead month because everyone is on vacation, so their next appointment is in September. They don’t weigh themselves, as suggested by their doctor, not to risk an obsession over numbers).
    An almost identical journey! :D
And even in my partner’s case, it was a doctor who suggested surgery to them! It was the anesthetist from another surgery, for other reasons, that told them as honestly as kindly “your weight is very high. You’re still young, you can still do something. But if you don’t do anything, you will not only continue to gain more of it, but when you’ll lose the protection of your hormones with the passing of the time your heart will be at a much higher risk. Moreover, you’ll be able to do less and less and you’ll find yourself bedridden and needing more and more assistance very soon. You’ll lose your independence completely. Doing something to change this is the best gift you can do to yourself”.
Since we have public healthcare in Italy, it’s pretty uncommon to go abroad for surgery (unless you’re trying to do cosmetic surgeries, then you can look abroad if you find something cheaper, like for big dental treatment, hair transplants, or general “beauty surgeries”), so we stayed here, where the healthcare offers you also the loose skin surgery as a “follow-up” of the bariatric surgery, for psychological/personal welfare reasons.
Note for others: it can be totally a coincidence. Every person is a case in itself and one can’t compare or expect the same results if they do bariatric surgery!
They now have so much more mobility too, their thyroid is faster and their asthma is almost gone (they don’t even take medications anymore, just on random days when they have a little heavier breath).

@@catherinekayy Sorry for my late reply :/ UA-cam sometimes doesn't notify me the replies to my comments 😒
Unfortunately mental health is so neglected! There are still so many prejudices, like "only the very big problems need a specialist", "why do you need a psychologist? You're fine", "you only need to be less glottonous!" and the general feeling of "obesity is a physical problem not a mental one". It's still so hard to link obesity to binge eating or other EDs that need to be addressed to the proper specialist as one would do with everthing else 🙄

Tomorrow I will meet a physiotherapist about this for the program. Yes I admit that all this scares me, I've never had surgery in my life. When I listen to you and see you you give me hope, motivation, courage and happiness. I appreciate everything you share, you are my favorite person to watch in YT, I'm very happy for you both.
