This video made me type "Falling Islands" in Spotify and JACKPOT! haha. Listened to pretty much everything you have on there while doing a long walk with overcast skies - perfect!
This track is on his "Recursion Hypothesis" album on Spotify - which means there's 35 minutes of this kind of stuff plus 3 more albums for those of you who want to hear more 🐸
The capabilities of this synth surprise me more and more every day. It's such a huge improvement over the OG Minilogue, and except for the four note polyphony limit, it's more powerful than the Prologue.
The trick is to build slowly, revolve everything over a single tonic (root note that everything gravitates to) so that you are building with intensity and melody but not so much with chord progressions. It’s more like Classical Indian music. Listen to some Ragas for inspiration. That’s what these basically are, western scale Ragas. Oh, and make sure you blend nicely with volume and filter - create ebb and flow (like waves rising and falling). And last but not least, efx that will sustain nicely but not too much that it gets muddy. A nice clean delay going through a reverb that is neither too low or high dampened. Experimentation...not expectation!
Dont you just love the minilogue XD? I'm in love with mine. The open source'y-ness of it and the fact that pressing one key goes through such a long expansive sonic life. I can hear it in the setting you have. It's just too much fun. If you can figure out a way to share that setting yer using, I'd be grateful! :) good toon! never stop making stuff! cheers!
Beautiful and dramatic textures. I'm doing a bunch of modular stuff, but looking at an XD to provide this kind of polyphonic sonic richness. Clearly has what it takes. Nice work. :)
Thank you! Yes, I have considered preset packs, but because I use a lot of third party logue sdk plugins I may not be able to get the exact sounds from my videos. Still, it is a possible thing I might want to do down the line. :)
Sounds awesome! If you don't mind, it the future, please bring the volume up before you post it, just so I can hear it even better! Thanks again! Edit: Never mind! I see the volume ramps at the end. :)
Hello there! I don't think I saved the patch, but you can achieve similar results by setting both oscillators to saw. Turn the filter to about 20%, resonance around 30%. Set EG attack to zero and decay to about 40%. Put on the Riser reverb setting. Then play the sequence in ARP latch mode, at a slow bpm. The patch at the beginning was merely a starting point anyway; by the end of the video it sounds totally different after all my knob turning and noodling. Its good to just experiment with all the settings and come up with weird and interesting results. Hope this helps! Cheers!
Thank you! It's not a true drone per se. I just set the release of the Amp EG really high, and fed it through a big reverb. This makes the low notes seem to blend into one another. Putting the arpeggiator into LATCH mode makes the notes play without me touching the keys, which adds to the overall effect of a huge ambient pad.
Thank you!!! Am really glad you enjoyed it. :) Regarding your question, I did not actually arpegiate the top notes separately. For the lower registers, I kept to playing only the root notes of the key I was using, so all you really hear at the low end is the bass note. It's the combination of a really high delay feedback setting and a really cavernous reverb that caused all the lower notes to seemingly blend together into one huge sub pad. I used a greater of variety of notes in the higher registers, so the arpegiation up there is a lot more audible and apparent. Was honestly really surprised by this result myself. It almost felt like I was playing a huge bi-timbral patch. Testament to the sheer power and flexibility of this synthesizer. :D
Hi there! Apologies for the late reply. If I remember correctly this was all stock XD. Wanted to see what I could do with just the factory available content. Cheers! :)
Sorry for the late reply! Yes this was a patch I made! :) I would absolutely recommend this synthesizer. It's one of the most versatile pieces of kit I have in my setup, and the support for 3rd party oscillators and effects makes it super expandable and customisable. :)
Thank you! Ahh im not sure if I still saved the patch. I think what I used were some Saw waves with some slow attack settings. It should be relatively easy to make something similar. My "patch" was simply a starting point though, so it wouldn't sound exactly the same anyway even if I shared the patch. As the jam went on I improvised and tweaked the parameters to the point where the sound at the end of the video is completely different from the sound at the start. I think a large part of the fun of the XD is how easy it is to author your own patches though. I'd say just experiment and come up with something on your own when you get your XD. :)
Amazing, congratulations! If you don’t mind me asking, are the sounds 100% from the Minilogue xd, or did you use anything else like pedals, post production in a DAW etc? I have mine coming in a few days and I can’t wait to jam with it!
Thank you very much! To answer your question, everything you hear in this video is 100% Minilogue xd. It's all just one patch, running through the synth's internal effects, then recorded straight to audio via my audio interface into Apple Mainstage 3. No overdubs or additional processing whatsoever. :)
Custom patch! This was five years ago, but as I recall all I used was some simple plucked sawtooths, then fed through a generous amount of reverb and delay.
I think it depends on if you are happy with only 4 voices, but the effects can make that thing sound absolutly huge! Deep Mind is nice as well for complex ambient music. To me the oscillators sound better on the Korgie!
I am listening to this over and over again. The textures are beautiful. Soundtrack to a scifi movie that time has forgotten.
Thank you :) Really glad you enjoy it! Hopefully one day I'll get to score an actual scifi film. :D
@@FallingIslands you deserve it! 11/10!!

oh my god.... this gave me chills. Exemplary demo! I AM NOT WORTHY.... *bows down*
KORG< GET IN HERE NOW!!!
That was amazing, you are a wizard. I can't believe this is one synth on one patch, it's massive!

Awesome!
I need 10-hours version

Do you people know any tutorial to create such complex patch/performance ?? This has blown me into space!!

@@GrootsieTheDog best explanation ever
This dog is an arpeggiator performance master 🐕
This is, indeed, huge, insanely huge
The textures are amazing and the arp @4:55 is faaaaat
This is so Miami Vice, Jan Hammer, well played.
Unbelievable. I have no other words.

This is incredible. Really selling me on the Minilogue as my next synth!
Dude what the hell this is insanely good
This jam is incredible !!! It's like a travel when you listen it ! 👌🙏
Riveting music!!
Totally blown away!
Wow. Very nice. Beautiful. 100% pure awesome.
very cool soundscape!
Awesome stuff. Inspirational, even. Every time I turn on my MXD, I discover something new I can do with it. Cheers!
Wow..... So beautifully done man.. Wish it was 8 hrs long..
So good syfy❤

Lovely sounds and intuitive playing, just about to graduate from Diva to this 😬😁
Nice work. Lovely sci-fi vibe.
Wonderful...
Stunning improvisation. Lush sounds
Mind blowing
Awesome drone out jam, love this! :-)
Incredible performance, improvised too! Wow!! 😎👍
WOWIE! Absolutely stunning!
Sounds awesome!
Nice ! 🙂 Bravo ! 🙂
Man, I didn't want that to end. Throw a beat track on that and it's a synthwave hit.
He has whole albums on Spotify - I checked them all out today, and great stuff
cool XD
nice!
So powerful...I hope I could learn the entire song.
It even beats Wavestate, darn it, lol. I'm waiting for the modul version I ordered...
This is incredible!
Thank you!
super cool!!!
Outstanding!
Wow, that is absolutely impressive. Is this all done with just the XD? The sound is tremendous.
Thank you! Yes, that was all done with the XD. :)
Wondrous. This video is the reason I bought the XD. Have you considered selling preset packs, or making tutorial videos?
Thank you! Yes, I have considered preset packs, but because I use a lot of third party logue sdk plugins I may not be able to get the exact sounds from my videos. Still, it is a possible thing I might want to do down the line. :)

@@FallingIslands so the pads and the background arpeggio sequence is only one preset (the sequence prerecorded, pads played live)?
like--
Dang. What preset is that? or was it a custom patch. if so, pass the info!
Custom patch! This was five years ago, but as I recall all I used was some simple plucked sawtooths, then fed through a generous amount of reverb and delay.
Korg or Deepmind 12?
I'd say Korg but I've not had the chance to play the Deepmind 12. I'd say go to a store and try them out!
