Been really grinding my way through diamond with honda this last week and this video really distilled everything I’ve learned the past few days so well, plus some other stuff I hadn’t considered. Reassuring to know a better honda player agrees with the ideas I had been thinking about. Great vid
As a 1700-1800 MR Honda, here's my input: 1. The meaty 5HK isn't bad as long as it hits, but if they wake up with crouch block then the second hit will whiff and you could get punished. So either cancel the first hit into something, or use a different button. 2. After buttslam you can get a meaty overhead and be +5. On block you are -1, but most people don't know this, and often times I'm able to keep up offense based on the knowledge check. 3. After launcher - DR - 5mp 3HK TG - Sumo Spirit you can do clap (22p) and it hits meaty. You're +0 on block, and +5 or 6 on hit, I forget. Use this to keep up offense.
The advantage of playing the "bottom one" character, especially one perceived as dumb/gimmicky, is that actually pulling off cool combos really throws people off and makes them go, "oh crap, this guy is COOKIN" And if Capcom ever decides to hand out big buffs, weak characters are likely to get some big love (as we saw with Aki and Zangief, who got massive buffs in season 2). Being strong with your Honda knowledge could really pay off down the line.
Awesome guide and I'll definitely be stealing some of this! A couple things I'd like to add is that you can get a conversion off of max distance punish counters off stHP if you drive rush into stMP and then go into the usual bnbs. Also, after the swaggy side switch you can actually get a butt slam after the sweep and get your oki going!
For those framekill options after buttslam 2LP into 2MK is quite nice as well since it catches walk back, it's also autotimed and 2MK is +6 so you can get the LP~MP TC 5MK I've found is a very nice counter poke option after spacing traps like max range 5MP specifically with buff on since you can buffer into heavy hands, it also has pretty good priority so I've found it to be a good DR option DR 2MK is nice but can have limited follow up options if hit at max range, what I've found to be a great option is 5MP, [2]8HK. You just have to have charge and not lose it before you do 5MP similar to the guile 5LK flash kick combos
One good button after using the new DR, 5MP, 3HK target combo into buff is 5HP. 5HP will hit later in the active frames which you can then cancel into Heavy Hundred Hands for big damage. I catch people with this all the time when they are pressing buttons on wake up. The only downside is the cancel timing into hundred hands is a little weird so you have to delay it a bit.
Off the dr mp> 3hk > buff after launch, you can do a few good meaty options, hp and hk bith hit meaty naturally, hp needs a 2 frame delay to be cancelable, but mp just hits meaty. With hk after it you can really get into damage. Good way to catch people doing anything standing
I thought at first I had to be Master to watch this. 😶 Finally did ranked placement & ended up in Iron. 😐 Watched every Honda guide on YT I could find. This one was good. He's hard to win with at any rank for me (limited days to play). I've used him off & on since SF2, got to gold in SF5, & hope to reach that in this. Took notes & hope to do more cMP, HK & S.Smash oki. Never beeen able to get kara stomp>c.grab. Any info would be great (I'm on pad). Thanks for this. 🙂
A small shortcut for the Kara DF+HK > Command Grab is DF+HK ~ slide to back then kick. So you don't need to start from the forward direction on the half-circle-back. It should be just about speed, do it as fast as you can.
@@VesperArcade I can 100% second this for the input. I'm pretty mid at the game, but the input buffer in the game makes this work great, but it's absolutely a commit. It's like one fast input, using number inputs, of 3HK around 214 HK. Technically, you can also do this cancel into things like hands as well, but you probably gotta have 'em scare to do ANYTHING to make that worthwhile.
The opponent gets knocked down after buttslam so he's invincible until he stands back up. The LP whiffing is to perfectly time our next attack so he can't jump out etc. Thanks for asking!
I'm iffy on 5HK as a meaty - if the opponent wakes up crouching, the second hit will whiff and they can get a fat punish on you. The one I'm thinking about is if they jump out of the corner and you do 5HK as an anti air, DRC sweep, that one you can side switch and do buttslam after. This one you need to OD buttslam, which isn't as good since it guarantees you burning out. But damage is damage I guess.
@@VesperArcade It only forces stand on hit - not on block. Obviously if you're calling out a backdash or a jump everything is okay, but if they wake up crouching without doing anything else you're -11 on the 2nd hit whiffing.
DO NOT use standing HK on your opponents wake up. If they are crouch blocking on wake up like most players are the second hit will whiff and leave you at minus 11. Not recommended at all.
No one cares about this gross lame character. He is boring, no one plays him seriously, and we got him instead of so many characters. Massive L character
@PinkArmFlexer It's not about being beat by him at all, it's about capcom forcing this lame, ugly, outdated, boring character into every fighting game they make. no one likes honda, he takes up real estate that could be used by way better and more interesting characters.

Honda also gets a safe jump from his target combo into headbutt as well as when you do a combo into sumo dash triple slap 1

Beginner here: Why is the whiffing LP inserted after the buttslam? If you're +23 can't you just start comboing?
