OK... so you need to do Heat which is Mann's masterclass - de Nero & Pacino on the same screen, also Val Kilmer, Natalie Portman and a host of famous stars (including two Thomas Harris villains !) Miami Vice is also extremely stylish (Mann produced the 80s TV show that set the style for an an entire decade). Manhunt was his 80s TV version of Red Dragon (Silence of the Lambs precurser) and some people argue it is better than the remake. Finally The Last of the Mohicans is also Mann. He is a very talented director. But yeah... Heat should be on your radar for sure !
The anonymity of Vincent you picked up on early is exactly what Michael Mann intended. The fact that you could be sitting right next to him and not have a clue who he is or what he does. In order to attain this, he had Tom Cruise try several different appearances and outfits until he could successfully walk around LA without anyone recognizing him.
Chandra, LMAO, your face when Jordan said "I wonder how much he gets paid as a hitman?" LMAO, the expression was "Are you considering that line of work??" HAHAHAHA I had the pleasure of watching this movie in the theatres when it came out way back when. An incredible experience that left me out of breath. The scenes were amazing, full of tension, just incredible. I watch this movie once every couple of years. Generally when I rewatch a movie I sometimes fastforward over certain parts, but this movie I watch from beginning to end. Honestly I still remember the dialogue after, wow, 20 years! Especially the 'reality' speech he was giving Max, "suddenly you're old, you never accomplished anything, etc etc" had quite the effect. The scenes are all so memorable, the body falling on the car, the jazz scene, the hospital scene, him pretending to be Vincent, wow, the club scene....etc, just everything. Glad you guys enjoyed it and I really enjoyed your reaction!
Hahaha, yeah for a second there he had me very concerned. And I couldn't agree more about the movie! Everything was done so well, I'm so glad you enjoyed watching with us ❤
A nice little detail about the final shoot-out: Vincent's training actually gets him killed here. He instinctively tries his "two in the chest, one in the head" shooting pattern, and if you look closely you can see two bullets get stuck in the train doors and then the third bullet gets stuck just above them. Max on the other hand just shuts his eyes and hopes for the best, and by spraying bullets with no real plan he ends up accidentally landing a kill shot on Vincent. Really fantastic movie.
Great reaction, guys! Collateral is one of my favorite thrillers, at least in part because it's such an unusual role for Tom Cruise. Jamie Foxx was also perfectly cast as Max. If you want another film by the same director, check out the heist film Heat (1995) with Al Pacino and Robert Di Nero along with Val Kilmer and a very young Natalie Portman. Another good psychological thriller is The Game (1997) with Michael Douglas. You can also check out No Country for Old Men (2007) to see Javier Bardem in a creepy killer role much like Vincent in Collateral. Bardem played the night club owner that Max had to get the intel from after he threw Vincent's briefcase off the bridge.
Jamie Foxx plays the cab driver Max , and he was nominated for 2 Academy Awards for acting the year this came out . He was nominated for best supporting actor for this role and best actor for “Ray” (The life of musical genius Ray Charles) . He won for Ray.
Omg ,Me & My Girlfriend Just Watched This Movie Just last night,Thanks for doing a Reaction To This Great Movie,You Just Made Our Day,See You Both At The Next One,Katy & Otis
I grew up in LA County never seen any deer. Did see some coyotes and wolves. Last time I seen a coyote it was carrying a large house cat, so not too cute but yeah they can find food in the inner city
Coyotes started out only in western states, they are so adaptable, and intelligent they now reside in every single state (and Canada) with the exception of Hawaii. My cat loves going out all night, I can’t stop him. Lucky kitty
You two are really good reactors! I like how you get into the films and you don't make stupid jokes and pull me out of a serious movie (like some reactors do). Great comments. New subscriber. ❤
I think you guys would really like 2015’s The Invitation. It’s listed as a horror movie but it’s really more of psychological thriller. Very well acted and totally underrated.
This is a great movie. It was so fun watching it with you guys. One of my personal favorite action thrillers is 1995's ASSASSINS, starring Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas, as two hitmen who go head to head against each other. It's directed by the late, great Richard Donner, who directed The Omen, Superman, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon, and so much more. Check it out. It's very underrated.
Great reaction. Check out Heat by the same director, starring AL Pacino, Robert Dinero and Val Kilmer. Also please react to The Accountant with Ben Affleck and Eagle Eye!
Speaking of movies with people driving in a taxi the recently released to digital Daddio with Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson is a good slice of life story.
For this movie Mann used these super uber lenses that could film in almost complete darkness which made the city behind dance in light. Both Cruise and Foxx were very uncomfortable with some of the actual locations in LA that Mann took them to film in.
A great L.A. movie from Michael Mann. But his masterpiece is the the fantastic "HEAT" - Al Pacino (the cop) versus Robert de Niro. (the robber) - it doesn't get any better than this. Also "Heat" includes on of the best shootouts in movie history.
What if Jamie Foxx's character Max from Collateral and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs from Miami Vice are actually the same person?! 🤔 Think about it! After the crazy night Max had in Collateral-getting caught up in a hitman's deadly game, facing life-or-death situations, and finding his inner strength-he decides to leave his old life behind in L.A. Maybe he moves to Miami, takes up a new identity, and joins the narcotics unit, becoming the badass detective we see in Miami Vice. It would explain why "Rico" is so calm under pressure and knows how to handle high-stakes situations. 🚔🌴 Could Max's wild night in L.A. have inspired him to fight crime on the front lines? Is this a hidden crossover in Michael Mann's universe?
Great reaction! 👍🏻 Thriller recommendations for each decade: Rear Window (1954) Charade (1963) The Warriors (1979) Blue Velvet (1986) Misery (1990) Mulholland Drive (2001)
Chopper starring Eric Bana is worth watching. The Shining and Full Metal Jacket are classics. If you want to try something a bit different I suggest watching Le Dernier Combat.
The look has so much to do with shooting on digital cameras. At night, there is only so much you can show. Backgrounds tend to disappear as everything fades into blackness. With digital, there is so much more depth of field, that you can SEE so much more and so much further into the distance. Mann really kicked open the door for leveraging that technology.
Great reaction and congrats on your upcoming addition! I love this movie and find it riveting every time I watch it. One thing I have seen that's an inconsistency though is at 34.30 when the building is dark and Max is taking the elevator up and then, he and the woman are in it again around 35.20, oh well ? LOL. Regardless, I love you guys and your channel!
I would argue that this is Tom Cruises best role to date. The question I always as' myself when watching is would’ve Vincent had killed Max at the end?
She re-married! Well, er, congratulations are in order, I guess. ... No, wait. Nevermind. EDIT: This is also an amazing movie from my favourite director. You kids can have Nolan. I'll keep Michael Mann. Did Hannibal Lecter better than Hopkins, made de Niro and Pacino both give great performances, and indirectly gave us the weirdest episode of broadcast TV ever in the alien abduction episode of Miami Vice (featuring a James Brown impersonator and Chris Rock).
A really good thriller/drama is Arlington Road. I’ve suggested it several times to various channels and maybe even yours. Nobody does it and I don’t know why. It has a good cast and an incredible ending. There really is like no reaction to it save for like one or two. I’m assuming it’s difficult to find streaming. Maybe just purchase it, surely you can afford one dvd to watch. And BtW, keep the mustache gone, at least by itself. You don’t want to look like someone who likes kids. Haha.
Collateral: something pledged as security for repayment of a loan, to be forfeited in the event of a default. Jordan had to pay up using his mustache or something? :P
I love how on the surface level this is a fairly simple thriller with a cool concept and good performances. But if you go one level deeper, the movie has quite a lot to say. Vincent is pretty much a nihilist and considers murder perfectly okay, since life has no inherent meaning. Meanwhile Max is trying to live his life in a meticulous way, but of course that doesn't work. The irony is: If Max had never met Vincent, he probably would never have called the lawyer and he would probably still lie to himself, his mother and everyone else about his dream. So in a very odd way this catastrophic night made him realize his full potential and Vincent accidentally helped him, which in turn led to Vincent getting killed. I don't think Vincent's charm was just a mask btw. Many sociopaths can be quite charming, if they want to be. A lot of the not murderous ones end up working for big companies, etc. One might say that capitalism rewards a lack of empathy...
@@maplenutsreact Good times. Keeping up with Michael Mann movies besides Heat, Last of the Mohicans is a banger. And do NOT listen to the haters and give Miami Vice a whirl. It is good. As a person, Tom Cruise is a weird fucking dude, but as an actor, he's so fucking compelling... he's probably my favorite actor, at least with regards to his imdb page: his movies, from the beginning of his career until now, are so consistently fun, interesting, and/or compelling. There might be actors with more range - who *display* more range, Cruise has more range than he typically shows, I think, he consistently gives movie star performances rather than acts, but he's shown, occasionally, that he's capable of the latter - but he's just got the most, best movies. And as good as they have been, I think Collateral was my favorite of his - something like 30 years into his career. Really impressive. AND THEN he out-did himself with "Edge of Tomorrow" (that I know see y'all have already reacted to; that's next up for me, I guess); he had to have been 40 years into his career before that movie and somehow, despite having so many fun movies before then, he's still consistently making incredibly good, fun, re-watchable movies.
To me this is one of Tom Cruise’s best performance. His portrayal as the villain is all the more terrifying because he’s so charming. Kinda reminds me of Denzel’s character in Training Day
Oooh, that is a great comparison! You're so right. Also, I was watching a video essay on this film the other day that spoke about what makes Vincent such a fascinating villain. And one talking point that I enjoyed was how he makes a lot of persuasive arguments about life that help motivate Max out of his apathy. And it's weird! Because intellectually we're all aware that he's a sociopathic hitman. But his remarks are rather salient. And more than a little nihilistic, but no matter. It puts the viewer (myself at least) in this strange position. It reminded me of that meme "Heartbreaking: Worst person you know actually made a great point"
Chandra: "oh no did he kill that guy?"
the first thought through my smart ass brain: "No. the bullets and the fall killed him.".😂
Hahaha I mean you're not wrong!
Tom Cruise's quick draw is so good, experts use it as an example when training people.
Really Rambo???
