Just what I needed... while I've been away from my stuff for 3 weeks. This video is a fun living vicariously through you opportunity. I love them all! That's probably because the j10 and mad professor.
Man that Paul Waller strat through the Lazy J is one incredible sound, might be one of the best sounds I heard on UA-cam. It and your demo of the Gibson Les Paul junior are just incredible. That’s saying a lot cause I’ve heard actual bursts on UA-cam.
Enjoying the journey following your tone quest. Your audio quality is fantastic, which reveals the tiniest nuances of all these wonderful boutique guitars, amps and pedals. Well done.
The exact same thing happened to me when I bought my precbs 1964 Strat (had few masterbuilt before, what I found was that most people don’t know how a precbs sounds, it’s completely different that a new guitar, it’s much warmer, you cannot beat old wood and these old pups. I had installed many different pups, several Mark Foley and Don Mare and others, STILL it’s very different from vintage 🤷🏻♂️ So people learn how strat sounds throught new guitars, and when they get an old Strat they’re weirded out, cause it sounds and feels like nothing they had before, usually old ones are less Straty lool, they’re fatter, even the 1956 or 1956. But as you play it more and more THEN you get why these are so good, there is a lil adaptation time I found.
Fascinating to hear how different these guitars sound through the Lazy J. All three sounded excellent, but that Paul Waller hardtail did just edge it for me. I clearly need a hardtail Strat now, which my wife will be thrilled about. I'll let her know you said that'd be ok. ;-) Great playing btw - you're clearly inspired when you pick up these fine instruments. Looking forward to hearing the same guitars through some more of your amazing amp collection.
Your collection is insane man! Aside from the painfully obvious of tones emitting from those three killer Strats, you’re going to make me start looking for a Lazy J here and my wife won’t be too pleased LOL!!!!
Lenny is a Strat showcase - a forever classic and a great reminder Strat brilliance. Great blues playing. I have the strats taken down - now I’m googling Lazy J.
first, well done ... I am about to pull the trigger BUT, undecided if I want a J10 or J20. I thought you could put 6V6's in the J20 which would lower her output if I wanted too. Any advice you could offer?
Hi James. The Weller is the best in that rig. It gives you more so you dig more. I see that it inspires you the most. It would be interesting how sound that rig with a Les Paul, an ES and a SG. I have to remember you, that the Firebird is still absent in your collection 😉
That 63 strat is just glorious, congrats! But the other two also get the strat job done really good for me, the hardtail does something to the sound which I like
Hi, James. Really great content! I am mostly a strat guy and love your collection of strats!! Would be interesting to put a Kingtone Duellist pedal in front of my amp to check the sounds of my strats with Ancho Poblano (Rosewood - fender CS 2016) and Radioshop ID 63 GT (Rosewood - Squier MIJ 1986) pickups! Fingers crossed! Cheers!
Sweet toys, James! I liked the 3 of them but the PW has the best sound to me. The drawback that a stratman would only think about is the hardtail system, which is not the signature feature of a strat, but to me it is something I do like as makes it more resonant and has more sustain. But for a stratman inside the heart it is a game changer. My best advice is follow your ears, hands and lastly the weight that the product has in the market, in such order. I perceive you that this 63 sample does not match with your idea of a 63, and I dont think it is bad, its just a matter of simbiosis between the player and the instrument. I am sure there should be more old good samples out there that will match perfectly but requires GAS for not to settle (which is awesome... :P) BUT who knows if your black sheep strat is the one that shines on your hands after a long list? Life will answer that... Thus I honestly suggest you to not sell the best samples you got, keep them as a benchmark for future refs 🤞 Great video! Cheers! Mizraim
NICE tones mate... I agree I prefer the MB Strats with maple boards especially into the J10, but which one, the Tele player in me is saying the hard tail!
Great video, James, so interesting, how different these Strats sound. The obvious difference of the PW is the humbucker, what I really dug was when you played around the 12th fret on the neck position. These sweet tones are what Strat-heaven is made of for me. I like tweed amps but for me a Strat through a Two-Rock is a match made in heaven, so I'm looking forward to this rig. The Supreme is a fine pedal, I'll stick to my Greer Lightspeed anyway ;-) My Custom Shop Strat has a RW board with compound radius which makes it play like a dream. I'd like to add a Maple board Strat but I'm insecure about the playability. What is your take on that?
After a few seconds hearing adjustment they all sound great and I find it hard to pick a favourite. I guess the star will differ each day based on how you respond to each rig you play. Perhaps the star of the video for me is the J10 amp. Which version did you go for? Is it the large cabinet with optional extras (rev & trem), from Coda? Cheers
When it comes to Strats, HSS with fixed bridge is something really unique and special. I think that's why I'm drawn to the Paul Waller. Great tones overall on all of them.
Loved the sound of all of them, but there is something about the ‘63 that makes it sound just amazing… Maybe like you said, the age of the pickups. I Don’t know. Anyway, thank you again for another great video! I really enjoy them! And you inspire me to pick up my guitar and play. Greetings from Belgium.
Do you ever go back and listen to one of your own videos from, say, a year ago, and marvel in both how far you’ve come in terms of both your gear and your playing? Pretty amazing. And yes, I love Strats. Don’t you think that the way the pedal brings out the finer points of the Strats has a lot to do with the amp you’re using? My favorite Strat pedal-the King Tone Heavy Hand-has to do a little more work because I don’t have a LazyJ.
Thanks - that’s a really lovely comment! You know i’ve looked back a few times and had a little cringe 😂 i do watch the current video a couple of times to see what I can do better though! I am quite happy with my progress if i’m honest - it has been a satisfying and fulfilling journey so far!
I enjoy these types of videos, but it always brings me to the fact that we live in such a fantastic time. Why? People are chasing sounds, when ALL of them are fantastic sounds.... and many times just adjusting your outputs, settings, etc. will bring things so close that the average ear will not hear it; nor does it really matter. But we see the same thing with photograph as well. My philosophy is to simply get the best quality "whatever" and then use THAT to its fullest and develop my own style/sound/etc. I don't chase gear. I don't do comparisons that frankly don't play out in the real world. I would bet that if you took any major guitar player that folks idolize and replace their guitar with any other in that same style, NO ONE COULD TELL THE DIFFERENCE. ;) But again, I do enjoy these types of comparisons though. But not for my own personal applications. Cheers!
Good question. I think they are reasonably close, but honestly with masterbuilt guitars i feel that the way they come is the way they are intended and i am comparing the two guitars fairly in that sense 🙌
@@JamesOnGuitarif I remember correctly you told that both guitars have the same kind of pickups (for mid an neck). Is that correct? Even if it’s correct there will be some differences between them. I assume that that would cause the main differences in tone between the two. Next to that, the differences in pickup hights are probably the biggest reason for the differences in tone.
'58 necks do vary in size being larger in early '58 and transitioning towards more of a D-shape getting progressively smaller towards the end of '58. Many early '58 necks retain the later '57 V-shape. My personal preference was for the Ron Thorn master built over the Paul Weller by a huge margin. The '63 is very different than the other two and was my favorite of the three. The Paul Weller was my least favorite.
@@JamesOnGuitar For reference, I have a '57 Strat with a hard-V neck shape and a mid-'58 Esquire with a medium sized D-shape. I have played '58 Strats with a similar neck shape to my Esquire. Late '58/'59 necks can be pretty small.
The paul waller is a beast ! The Ron Thorn is nice, but not as good in my opinion. The Paul Waller has more character and grit to it. The funny thing is I found that the Waller neck pickup was the most stratty of them all.
@@JamesOnGuitar one of the best things about it (to me) is that you can roll down and it retains some highs. 99% of pedals dont do that. (Protein, duellist gladio) its become a necessity in some ways. Anyways thanks for the videos.
I HAVE TRY TO COME UP WITH MANY REASONS WHY? 50S AND 60S GUITARS SOUND BETTER, ....AGE? BUILD/ NOSTALGIA? ALIEN INTERVENTION? LOL BUT IN ANY CASE THE 63' JUST HAS THAT THING!
Next video will have the giveaway winner announcement for my 6,000 Sub Kingtone Duellist Giveaway! Sub and comment to enter! 🤟🏼
You're literally living the dream. Production is on point. How do you only have 6k subs?
Thanks!

Thanks for sharing this amazing collection with us. Always so cool to hear your thoughts on gear and the road it leads you down.

Mate, you put the Paul Waller on to the bridge pickup and I was 😵. Incredible. Just stumbled on to your channel and really impressed 👏

Any Strat video you make, I’m watching. My favorite tones on YT. Honestly. Keep ‘em coming!
🙌🤟🏼 cheers!
Congrats on the sub accomplishment, James! Wishing myself and everyone else luck on the giveaway!
The J10 is a classic…great vid man
Keep them coming James. Who doesn't love the sound of strats through cranked amps!
Please keep the strat series coming, the PW is an absolute monster tone machine, it ruled this amp definately. Cheers

Killer Rig Sir! That Lazy J is my dream amp! Keep up the videos, I love your playing style and the tones you are achieving.

So true, i want to spend more time getting better at Lenny again 👍🏼 This Lazy J amp is really fantastic
That Paul Waller strat sounds like an absolute weapon mate, keep that one dude.
Yeah, i think i realised that again the moment i plugged it in this time! Cheers

Nice video. I recently got a hardtail too and it's been my #1. There is just something special about hardtail strats.
Nice video and really cool strats.
All three are killer! Congrats on 6k subs!!
Thanks!
They all sound great and the Lazy J is awesome but I’m really impressed with what the supreme is doing here. Great playing as well

Do it! I love my 63 firebird.

Dream guitars man, they all sound great! Be awesome if you could do an in-depth video on how you like to set your strats up.

I really like using the mad professor Royal blue with my strat as well. It does exactly what you said. Makes a strat sound more stratty
🙌

Hey James , looking to buy a Lazy j lc 10, do you recommend it? Currently i have one tweed, a divided by 13 cj11, which is fantastic.
Aww! lovely tones. Lazy j sounds crazy good .. what do you mean there’s a couple of people who want to buy the PW HSS.. nope… just the one person! ;)
Ooh, give me that 63 any day, has that strat sound that I so adore.
PS just subscribed, liking your videos.

Getting a lot of Hendrix vibe with that amp and the strats...

Love your video
Love the Paul Waller, much more unique with the hard tail / hss but 50s look and feel.
Can’t go wrong with the 63 either of course.
Yeah the Waller is a really fantastic mash up! Love it
Its really 3 Amazing guitars , grattz
Cheers!
Any Strat-based content is good content! 😊
Enjoying it from Spain and No I dont need the duellist !! Back in the UK next week before the `US working trip ...A new toy is on its way .......
Pray tell! Cheers Clive
I love playing all types of guitars, but fenders are the bees knees for me. Unfortunately I’ve never played anything older than a mid 70s fender.
If I had to choose between Fender and Gibson… 🤷🏽
63 sounded like an atomic weapon
All good but the 63 has the most woodiness. You should make another video these against a standard current fender American to compare.
That’s a great idea… a current Standard for the channel to use for comparisons 👌🏽
The tobacco/sunburst burst
Finally the supreme gets some love. Highly underrated pedal. Better than the protein in my opinion
Yeah it def deserves more hype!

‘63 all day long 😊
Paul Waller by a length….😂👍
