Texas is a state of more than 25,000,000 people and at least 5 dialects. The "most" Texan accent doesn't actually exist. Those announcers spoke a Northeast Texas (north and east of Dallas but not spoken in the far east of Texas) accent. Once you enter the inner suburbs of North Dallas this accent disappears in favor of the accent most notably used by Owen Wilson and Angie Harmon among others.
Yes, but it would have been a "far greater" heartbreak if John Tyler would have lost !! Never would a team "ever" recover that many on sides kicks. Now, we would have known, within a few hours, those incredibly low odds, what one in a 100,000? like ESPN post those college games losses at 2% or 3% one of the American League Playoff games last year was about in the range of 2-6%
My brother and I were at this game as my childhood buddy #30 was playing for Plano East. We left because it was over. As we were leaving they scored their first comeback TD and I remember my brother saying, "They scored, big deal." I opened the paper up the next morning to checkout the final score and my jaw dropped! I regret leaving that game to this day! Damn it!
To the person that asked how is a HS playing at an nfl stadium....in Texas, football is king. Almost every season a kick off Classic is held at AT&T stadium in Arlington and NRG in Houston and teams from the area, and sometimes across the state play in it. This game was a playoff game 2 before the stage championship between two 5A schools, which at the time was the largest classification. Plano East is one of the largest schools in the state, like +5,000 kids. Tyler John Tyler is now in a smaller classification. Anyway, playoff game locations are decided by the schools playing, and if the stadium they want to use is available. Most later rounds are always held in large venues like AT&T Stadium, NRG, the Alamodome, Kyle field (A&M), Royal Memorial (UT), Ford (SMU), etc. If you want to see how crowded a game can get in Texas, look up in 99 when PNG played Stephenville in the astrodome, and someone on PNG side pans to show their side and all three decks are completely full halfway around, prob close to 25,000 people just for PNG. The largest crowd ever to watch a HS football game was in the old cowboys stadium between some Dallas schools, over 49,000 people. HS football in Texas is something else.
i graduated from j.t in 2004. i marched in the drumline. this is pretty cool to me becuase i awas there with my mom and and dad. they also went on to win state that year 16-0. O.M.G so many memories. TYLER TEXAS. .THE GREATEST TOWN IN THE WORLD. NO CRIMES 2 HIGHSCHOOLS. great economy. gotta love it. we have the greatest junior college in the nation. T.J.C. and we have. a University of texas here. tons of private schools.
Yep...this game is a legendary in Texas. I remember this watching it live on the old HSE in Texas. Every Texan older than 21 and follows sports knows this one.
Whether Plano won or not, it doesn't matter. This is still an example of true resilience in athletics. It's still inspirational to any athlete and is still the greatest game of all time. It's just depressing to watch. In fact, when Plano's coach watches the game today, he turns the TV off after the their last touchdown.
i was there at the game! my brother started for john tyler high school. we never missed a game. BEST highschool football game ever played! go BIG BLUE... CUJO!
this was like the 2006 Florida 5a states game between STA and lakeland. It was 14 to 42 with 2 min left in the 4th quarter. STA intercepted, then did 3 onside kicks and went into overtime. In the first 2 OT's both teams kicked field goals. In the third, lakeland kicked a field goal but STA went for victory. The ball was given to #7 who ran down the middle. The ref called it short. On ESPN, they reviewed the play and said that he actually did score. It was the greatest game I have ever seen.
Just saw the ESPN short, Had to get more of this. A couple thoughts... 1. Nothing is better than a good 1985-95 Football Uniform. Individuality, Spats, Half-Jerseys, Neck Rolls, Giant Hip pads, Double Thigh pads, Double the gear here and none of the uniform there. Good players looked like good players. 2. If you cant comprehend why Plano didnt just onside kick again, here’s why. Regardless of Field position, which was a major factor and the Talent of John Tyler, another factor. The Issue is really about Motivation and Situation. If they ran another onside kick they would have absolutely not gotten that ball, and probably would have given up a return TD anyway. Why? I. The team kicking is tired, elated, relieved, and... not losing anymore. II. The team recieving has just blown the game, but are fresh, pissed and desperate to score. III. If they onside, than #88 cant be a factor on a tackle, #12 is on the sideline, so thats two Plano studs taken out of a huge play. IV. Plano would fear going off-side, or letting ball go out of bounds, etc. Tyler would race to the ball with multiple players going for broke - likely destroying any tacklers as they waited for the ball to go ten yards before they could recover it. V. They would have scored anyway. Only a pooch kick that forced a fair catch could have prevented the outcome. Even that goes wrong in those situations. 1 player out of 1 lane, is all it takes. 3. #88 would have made #22 go out of bounds or tackled him at the 40, had he not been victim of the greatest holding penalty that never got called. 4. Whomever it was on Tyler that grabbed #88 of Plano East on the final kick return is the real MVP. Genius! Savvy! Game Changer! 5. 24 hours word had spread up to Seattle, WA about this game. We all talked about this mysterious game during our teams own film session. We all called BS. Whoops.
This ending is the living, breathing definition of the phrase "It ain't over til it's over"...cuz even when Plano took the lead with 24 seconds left...it still wasn't over yet...it ain't over til it's over...
Back in 1976, i was 7 yrs old our 1976 Temple Wildcats Beat the Sherman Bearcats there at Texas Stadium! we were down 26-12 in the 4th qtr, my dad said let's go we've already lost. I remember after exiting the playing arena , looking up at the concrete and hearing the Temple crowd roar!! Thinking maybe we scored, when we got back to the car we turned the radio on the score was 26-26 the announcer says Temple 6, Sherman 5, Temple Won on Penetrations!!! We traveled with some friends to that game, and i 'll never forget how we Yelled in that car!!! What a Victory!!!
Probably the most amazing three minutes of football ever played. Five TD'S in those three minutes. An incredible comeback, then a shocker. In fact I'm going to the bathroom and throw up.
What can I say? I've been waiting over 12 years to see those highlights and it was well worth the wait. Greatest high school football game of all time, period!
Terrance Green My wife coached at a Plano East feeder school at the time, and we were at the game. Had to be the biggest emotional roller coaster i'd ever been on at a sporting event.
I was at this game supporting then district rival JT...simply one of the greatest comebacks I've ever seen only to see those comeback hopes squashed in a matter of seconds
I absolutely love this video. It is the best comeback I've ever seen. I also looked up number 88's bio because he does everything for his team. Can you believe he decided to be a minor league baseball player?! He had a lot of potential. That guy is ridiculously amazing.
24 seconds? WRONG! When Plano East kicked off, there was 3 seconds left on the clock. I was there, and remember looking up at that clock. Before the John Tyler player even made it to mid field time had expired. Where I was sitting you could tell very quickly that he had a clear path to the end zone. I had never seen two sides of a football stadium change in excitement, so many times. Most of the 4th quarter, the Plano East fans were headed to the exits. Then when Plano East took the lead, complete silence on my side of the field, bu it was so loud across the field. In the next 3 seconds everything flipped flopped. Although my wife and I didn't attend John Tyler, we were screaming for joy when that final touchdown was scored. My wife was 9 months pregnant, yet she was jumping up and down shouting! This was the most amazing game, and feel bad for all those folks who headed to the parking lot, only to hear it on the radio.
No, the announcers were actually correct: Plano's final TD was indeed scored with 24 seconds left. When the kickoff was returned for a TD by Tyler, there were 11 seconds left. So Plano actually had a final brief possession that lasted two plays. On the final play of the game, Plano threw an INT.
Wait, if there was only 3 seconds left, why would you even kick it off to them again?? Just squib it or even onside it again and let the time run out. Worst case scenario, you make them throw a hail marry to have to try and win it. You don't kick to them with 3 seconds left! Smh. Terrible coaching.
I think you are misremembering. 24 seconds is right (I trust an announcer saying it on camera as opposed to your memory 20 years removed). Plano East had one more possession after this, starting with 11 seconds left. It ended with an INT. Here's the boxscore.....web.archive.org/web/20041212073136/www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/sports/high_school/10288969.htm
That's the best thing I've ever seen..I remember that game, watching it on WFAA 8 the next morning, because they were doing the game summaries..Damn, I was like 8 then..And, I knew I had to play high school football when I got to High School, because I wanted to be in a game like that..
Well, haven't seen this clip, in years, stumbled on it again. But as a 1964 John Tyler graduate. Never and I repeat, never can I get enough of this. It's topped off when the Plano East announcer said, "I think I;m gonna' throw up" lol, lol, lol. But Plano East "back in the day" "that day" was a top, I mean top, rated power house. So it was really enjoyable. Not since the Earl Campbell days at J.T. has there been "so much fun" !!!
This is the Beauty of Texas High School Football! Moments like this are things that are never forgotten. This is somethin you need to witness in the stands to feel just how much excitement are in the stands and understand the adrenaline in the team. Nothing compares to it. Football is a religion and I will always be a Texas country girl for life!
Plano East had a great season that included beating their crosstown rival, the Plano Wildcats 28-7. The Wildcats eventually won the 1994 Division I State Championship over Katy Tigers 28-7. There were some good football players in Plano that year. Not to rain on John Tyler's parade either. Rumor has it that Tyler had so much speed and size on that team, Jerry Jones was seen on the sidelines recruiting.
"break out the oreos..were gonna celebrate!!!!" I love everything about this video...f**king amazing game!! I live in Tyler..so I'm glad JT won...but at the same time, I feel terrible for Plano East. Best vid on youtube!
Those kids (now in late 20's) will never forget this game. Heck, my school did nothing even close and I remember every single game...even the weather and who was in the stands. Football days were the greatest days...period. Football=greatest game on earth.
I was at this game supporting John Tyler, and left the game early to beat the "crowd" based on the advice of my dads friend. So we ended up leaving the best highschool football game ever.
Plano East- John Tyler Im happy for you Im gonna let you finish. But the Buffalo Bills Houston Oilers game was the greatest comeback of alltime of ALLTIME!
I would disagree. Buf-Hou was done over the entire second half and overtime. This was all done under 5 minutes. Buf-Hou was good but this was just phenomenal.
I remember watching the 10 o'clock news and seeing those highlights I was stunned. I was a senior that year and my school Eisenhower had just lost in a tie ( 1year before the added overtime) to Coverse Judson in the div 1 semi finals game. I couldn't believe what I had seen. I announcer couldn't have been funnier!! I felt for those guys though
My childhood friend is #30 for Plano East (black team) and I was at this game. We left just as they scored that first comeback touchdown. We heard the crowd cheering on our way out and my brother said, "Oh Plano East scored, big deal." I still regret it to this day.
I love how southern the one announcer is by censoring himself saying "Good Gosh Almighty" until Plano East scored the go ahead touchdown. That one moment of euphoria was just too much for him, lol
When ESPN first showed this highlight on Sportscenter, they focused on the commentary, not the game result. Charlie Steiner and Jack Edwards almost peed themselves from laughing so hard on the air. (They both had the same reaction when they showed Carl Lewis singing the national anthem at a Nets game, just to show you where this video ranks in the halls of dubious sports history.) I remember watching Sportscenter and feeling awful. This is the greatest stomach punch game OF ALL TIMES!!!
I remember this being shown on sportscenter (back before they destroyed professional sports). Normally, I don't care who wins a football game, especially a high school football game. Unless I have money on the game. But this, like you say, is heartbreaking. Sometimes the football gods are just a group of heartless bastards.
This may be one of the most heartbreaking sports clips I've ever seen. Those announcers are right. If I was a Plano East fan and watched or listened to this game, I probably would feel like throwing up.
Class of 87 from JTHS, home of Earl Campbell. True champions know how to rise to the occasion. The clock didn't say 00:00 so guess what the fat lady wasn't singing...WAY TO GO CUJO!!!!
"He's gonna score!!!" *tackled 30 yards short of the endzone* hahahahahaha!!!!
Those announcers are the most Texan people I've ever heard.
This is heartbreaking.
Texas is a state of more than 25,000,000 people and at least 5 dialects. The "most" Texan accent doesn't actually exist. Those announcers spoke a Northeast Texas (north and east of Dallas but not spoken in the far east of Texas) accent. +kissfan7 One of the most Texan people of ALL TAME
+kissfan7 the announcer said "jesus it was unbelieveble!"
the guy saying "COME ON NO, NO... OH GOSH" sounded like Mack Brown, lol
Yes, but it would have been a "far greater" heartbreak if John Tyler would have lost !! Never would a team "ever" recover that many on sides kicks. Now, we would have known, within a few hours, those incredibly low odds, what one in a 100,000? like ESPN post those college games losses at 2% or 3% one of the American League Playoff games last year was about in the range of 2-6%
"I done wet my britches" deserves a place in the greatest sports quotes of all time.
Daniel Penrod oh man haha. absolutely.
Them big boys over at channel 8 channel 5 couldnt get this- WE GOT IT!
You DANG right.
This is the video to watch if you're an acting student looking to get the authentic Texas accent.
"I'm Sick, I'm going to throw up" lol best commentators of all time, next to Gus Johnson
Gus Johnson is the worst...
Classic. XD
I always preferred "I dun wet muh breeches!"
My brother and I were at this game as my childhood buddy #30 was playing for Plano East. We left because it was over. Never break out the Oreos until it's 0:00 on the clock.
My favorite part about this video is the fair, objective and completely unbiased commentary from the Plano broadcasters.
Whenever I'm sad, I immediately watch this video and it's impossible not to be happy again. Thank you, gentlemen.
+Spider333 Me too. Positive thinkin', baby. Positive thinkin'!

dude that was so unexpected
It hurts even more when you realize the kid who returned the kickoff for the TD was the same kid who fumbled the previous two onside kicks.

we never missed a game.
BEST highschool football game ever played!
go BIG BLUE... CUJO!
When the commentator gave that final " aw Gorsh!" At the end lmfao
"ONE OF THE GREATEST COMEBACK OF ALL TIME!!!! ALL TIME!!!!"

The commentary in this game just takes to a whole other level. Legendary.
#88 for John Tyler played Defensive End for Florida State. He was one of the top recruits that year.

i remember this game, john tyler was awesome...it doesn't get any better than this...TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
That team fought their hearts out.. They left it all on the field..
I know as a football player thats probably the worst feeling in the world. god i would have cried so hard. god bless those poor kids

OMFG I DIDNT EXPECT THAT!!!!!!!
It was all going well until they woke up Earl "The Cookie Man" Miller.
Best comeback ever! It`s a shame they lost though. This teaches a lesson for both teams though "Never quit and never give up when your down."
the "oh gosh" at 4:26 is one of the greatest things ever
Plano East had a great season that included beating their crosstown rival, the Plano Wildcats 28-7. The Wildcats eventually won the 1994 Division I State Championship over Katy Tigers 28-7. I know both thses teams really well. im from East Texas near Tyler Tx and now live just south of Plano Tx.
20 year anniversary of this historic game is approaching. They need to get together and replay it. Just saying.....
John Tyler got moved down to 4Al. Plano East just got moved up to 6A. It wouldn't be nearly as much of a contest; East would probably win.
Once in a lifetime! So happy for al those that were there and got to see it!
I can watch this 1000 times and still not believe how this ended......
The last 20 seconds are what dreams are made of.
greatest comeback of ALL TIME.... for John Tyler lol
Its funny how the only time they didn't do an onside kick was a return all the way to the house.
this never gets old to me. I could listen to the audio of the last minute and a half of this video for days on end.
That video never gets old.
They were so sick at the end, they forgot to tell the listeners what had happened!
"break out the oreos..were gonna celebrate!!!!" I love everything about this video...f**king amazing game!! I live in Tyler..so I'm glad JT won...but at the same time, I feel terrible for Plano East. Best vid on youtube!
that's really a heart-breaking for Plano East..but that was hell of a game..
Those kids (now in late 20's) will never forget this game. Heck, my school did nothing even close and I remember every single game...even the weather and who was in the stands. Football days were the greatest days...period. Football=greatest game on earth.
This is one of the most epic football videos of all time. Thank you for posting this up. I have never seen this before, but I am deeply impressed.
This is living proof it is never over till it's over
THIS WILL NEVER GET OLD!!!! Classic
One of my favorite sports videos
The Greatest Comeback of All Time...spoke too soon.
That was the most amazing ending to a football game ever. I just can't stop watching it...
Man, I have been looking for video of this game for as long as I can remember, thanks for putting this up!
If you live outside of the State of Texas and have ever wondered why we seem so obsessed with High School football... this is why we love it.
Good gosh oh mighty
The play-by-play announcer sounds like Terry Bradshaw and the analyst sounds like Jerry Glanville.
I was at this game supporting John Tyler, and left the game early to beat the "crowd" based on the advice of my dads friend. So we ended up leaving the best highschool football game ever.
man, i could watch that over and over.
Plano East- John Tyler Im happy for you Im gonna let you finish. But the Buffalo Bills Houston Oilers game was the greatest comeback of alltime of ALLTIME!
Na u wrong
I would disagree. Buf-Hou was done over the entire second half and overtime. This was all done under 5 minutes. Buf-Hou was good but this was just phenomenal.
Pretty sure Buffalo didn't score 4 TDs in the last three minutes of the game.
I like how you did the Kanye West thing
yeah I'd have to agree, I don't think anyone, not even the Bills themselves, thought they would come back and win that game
Channel 8 and 5 they done packed it in....WE GOT IT....god bless them kids im gonna throw up....LMMFAO!
These announcers need to be in the NFL
NEVER GETS OLD !!!
OHH GAWRSH
I remember watching the 10 o'clock news and seeing those highlights I was stunned. I was a senior that year and my school Eisenhower had just lost in a tie ( 1year before the added overtime) to Coverse Judson in the div 1 semi finals game. I couldn't believe what I had seen. I NEVER get tired of this video....
My childhood friend is #30 for Plano East (black team) and I was at this game. We left just as they scored that first comeback touchdown. We heard the crowd cheering on our way out and my brother said, "Oh Plano East scored, big deal." I still regret it to this day.
Near Epic Fail = John Tyler
Near Beyond Epic Win= Plano East.
Still amazing nearly 15 years later
@3:11 "The most improbably comeback you've ever seen!"
Ominous words!
I love how southern the one announcer is by censoring himself saying "Good Gosh Almighty" until Plano East scored the go ahead touchdown. That one moment of euphoria was just too much for him, lol
I can't believe this. That is simply one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. I'm still in shock.
I watch this like a hundred times and it is by far the best epic fail I have ever seen!
"the greatest comeback of all time... OF ALL TIME"
well, now we know where kanye got his inspiration.
Class of 87 from JTHS, home of Earl Campbell. True champions know how to rise to the occasion. The clock didn't say 00:00 so guess what the fat lady wasn't singing...WAY TO GO CUJO!!!!
PLOT TWIST: On the ensuing kickoff, the team in black scored AGAIN.
GOOD GOSH ALMIGHTY!
