When two guys fight in the NHL today, it looks like choreography. In the early nineties, I watched a lot of games via satellite. That was a very different time. Hockey today may be much faster and better in every way than it was back then, but the old days were more fascinating. That's for sure. Greetings from Germany.
My buddy's daughter played hockey with Probie's daughter. He would sit in the stands with the other fathers and chit chat just like a normal guy. Actually, he spoke less than most. Jeff told me looking at his hands was enough to tell the whole story. Huge, strong, scarred .....the hands of a fighter.
Being a Hawk fan, I had the pleasure to boo him and cheer him on. I can’t even tell you how many fights I saw him in, most of them were Probert victories. RIP Probie 24 thanks for the memories
Probert vs. McSorley may have been the best hockey fight that I ever saw. I loved how Probie held back when Marty was down, and then gave him a "good job" head pat at the end. Probert on fighting Domi: hitting him on the head was like punching a bowling ball.

A name not Red Wing lore but as a puck head kid my dad took me to the last game at Olympia and Dennis Polinich made a run at Guy LaFleur. It was Jaques ( I said Marty earlier, a RW legend though)LaPoint went over to him and they dropped the mittens. LaPoint was a big man back then but Polinich held his own. I also saw the second game in Joe Louis against Toronto. Tiger Williams and Polinich fought not once or twice but three times that game. Tiger went to the locker room after the first fight, got stitched up. Second fight, Polinich opened up the stitches again and blood everywhere. Third period Tiger comes out again, Polinich hopped over the boards and they went again, blood everywhere.It was like how many times does a guy have to prove he's tougher/ better fighter. Obviously I'll never forgot it. Nothing compared to what we saw that night at the old Joe.

I remember organizing hockey pools back i the '80-'90's.In the very last round,we all picked a goon/enforcer for our teams.I really miss those days.Bob Probert and Tie Domi were very popular picks!
Probert also had some hockey skills. He had a 29 goal season and a 20 goal one, and just missed with 19 in his first year with Chicago. He also got some Selke votes one season. But yeah, job #1 was as an enforcer, and avenger for guys who ran Stevie Y.

Back in the 80's when I was a kid in South Windsor. The shortcut to my cousin's house was climb the fence in my back yard, walk across the street, climb the fence, and walk though Bob Probert's yard. I never saw him even once. I don't think he was ever home.

I grew up in Detroit in the 60's. I got to see some of best wings enforcers. From Howe to probert to McCarty to kocur to konatantinov. Probert was the best. Toughest sob I've ever seen fight. That guy would go with anyone. Talk shit and you would get to see Bob. The best one I saw was the tye domi fight. Afterwards, when Domi was skating away, Steve yzerman was making a motion like " who's got the belt now" . Bob beat the crap out of Domi. The other one was when Darren McCarty got ahold of Claud lemuxie , for what he did to draper. Oh the dynasty years.
Yep, Probert and Kocur were a pair to steer clear of. Moreover, Probert was a pretty good hockey player, not just an enforcer. Him and Kocur both took fighting lessons at the Kronk Gym in Detroit. If you notice, Probert tries to upper cut as much as possible. That was a technique he learned at the Kronk. The Kronk instructors pointed out punching straight caused both fighters to slide away from one another on their skates, whereas an uppercut allowed you to land more effective punches because your body wasn't trying to move away. Simple physics.

He was a good player to be sure. He was never asked to score of course but he did his job. The best player ever that was also considered a tough guy / enforcer was Wendel Clark. Drafted 1st overall as a D but converted to a winger.

I had season tickets to Blackhawks during Proberts time with Red Wings and then with the Blackhawks later, and fights were a very common occurrence in the whole NHL then. It may not be right, but it sure was exciting!

I don't EVER remember Probert 'flattening' Wendel Clark ! They fought 3 or 4 times and every fight was pretty close with Clark winning at least one of them. And I am NOT a Leafs fan. These announcers are very bias when they want to be. Nice to see the scraps with Bomber. A lot of people don't remember Baumgartner but he was a tough guy, and a smart fellow off the ice as well. i watched Probert when he was an junior OHL Brantford Alexander....he was an intimidating hockey player back then, and continued his domination into the NHL, where he could score and fight, and there hasn't been anyone to compare with Bob Probert.

Early 1990’s, Hartford, Probert skates behind the net chasing a Whaler as a puck clears up ice. Whaler turns around just before blue line, stops, and send a punch into Probert’s face. Probert never saw it coming and dropped onto the ice. Refs missed it because play was up ice. Probert on his knees bleeding. Whaler fans cheering. Old time hockey!
These were five dandies. The Coxe fight was a surprise because he was new to the league. I patterned some fights in my hockey story on these sort of battles.

Early 1990’s, Hartford, Probert skates behind the net chasing a Whaler as a puck clears up ice. Whaler turns around just before blue line, stops, and send a punch into Probert’s face. Probert never saw it coming and dropped onto the ice. Refs missed it because play was up ice. Probert on his knees bleeding. Whaler fans cheering. Old time hockey!

These were five dandies. The Coxe fight was a surprise because he was new to the league. I patterned some fights in my hockey story on these sort of battles.

We loved Probert as kids because of his toughness. Knowing that the ultimate cost was his life this is hard to watch now. It wasn’t worth it.

@ I first read it and loaned it to a customer and he read it and gave it away to another guy. Bought another one because I liked to go back and read parts again but I loaned it again and once again it’s gone. 😆. Not buying it again. I guess it’s just that good.

Probert had that uppercut that changed into a cross that he threw from Kansas… brutal same power second one to minute 3! Look at bare knuckle boxers who train months for a fight. Have a few any given week!
