I was at the Churla game. Shawn Antoski had broken Churlas orbital bone a month prior. It was a month to the day and Shanes first game back. He wasn't supposed to fight. Good luck telling Shane he cant fight. Shame on the Rangers for dressing Shane against Grimson who was arguably the champ of the league at this point. The prior game the Rangers had dressed Langdon and Vandenbussche. They also had Eric Cairns up and Blouin in the minors. We all were yelling for his teammates to get in there. Langdon took on Grimson the next time they played. God i miss this NHL!!!
@@EnforcersHockey I watch the video and im instantly brought back to the Blue seats, our entire section yelling for the boys to jump in there. Guys from the bench were yelling at Noonan, Driver, Lidster and Nemchinov to jump in. Churla played 5 days later in Montreal and fought Scott Thornton. Montreal dressed Thornton, Stevenson, Chris Murray, Quintal. Rangers only dressed Churla and Beukeboom.
the 85-86 team also had Basil McRae - Todd McEwen - Gerard Gallant- John Barrett- Lane Lambert - Claude Loiselle - Warren Young - Harold Snepts ..... All of those guys could fight as well.....
You are exactly right. I met him and his sons at a business I worked at outside of Chicago. Could not have been a more quiet, nice, polite respectful man
Stu is a great man, quiet, eloquent, mild mannered, family man.. met him and his family several years back. We talked about a few of his fights, religion, and changes in the game. Super well spoken for a giant (i think he's 6'5 or 6'6 and probably 225-230)
I used to collect these fight tapes in the late 80s and early 90s. It was some kind of bootleg VHS thing you had to order. I got hours an hours of fights. Love this stuff
I always respected Grimson because he’d give dudes plenty of opportunity to move on and let it go before he made them regret not taking that opportunity.
Probert was the best during the latter 1987-1988 season as a co champ with Dave Brown. Probert was the best January 9, 1991 until April 2, 1994. Probert continued on as a top 10 on the fight cards until 2000 - 2001 season. Probert had the longest prime run with a good resume of winning big fights in rematches. Many others were better than Probert before he came to the NHL. Many were better during Probert's career seasons . I think with his lengthy fight card, he ranks the number 1 as a whole. I also believe he wasn't the most feared or destructive fighter to drop the gloves .... Probert did purposely were a loose, untied Jersey until the mandatory tie down rules came into effect in 1996. He did jump guys, sucker punch, pull hair , head butt and used a cheapshot elbow. Hey, it was war on skates in that era . You fought to win no matter what...
Was a huge Blackhawks fan as a kid and the Reaper was easily my favourite. Didn't know at the time that the reason Grimson-Probert fought so much according to Probert's book, Peluso was extremely intimidated and fearful of Probert.
I seen Grimson and Lindros fight in a preseason game in Philly. Nothing really happened though, they came together at the boards a couple punches thrown and then tied each other up. My Stu Grimson experience
Every team should have at least one fighter. Bring back the guts to hockey. There was always something on the line back in tbe day. There was the points scoreboard andvthe pride score board.
He became the DIM SLEEPER when Dave Brown Knocked his ass out . Got too cocky and pissed Brown off and got a severe beating. Brown was interviewed before the game and he said "Don't go up for popcorn, because you don't want to miss this" and he was true to his word. The Dim Sleeper was out for months after his beating.
Ah, the good old days. I still love hockey but I wish the NHL would allow this type of stuff to come back. It was always part of the game. Certainly not the only thing but I feel they've tried to "sanitise" it too much which only serves to piss off old fans like me! What say you?
So many great memories of real hockey days & years, So damn happy when Marty Mac & Jay Wells were with us, & man did you miss 1 huge thing .. BOB MILLER CALLING THAT FIGHT! The Vin Scully of Hockey Radio/tv.. GKG!
I really liked Grimson, but don’t understand why he has that nickname. All of his fights were either close or he lost. Particularly against other top enforcers. I wish he was on the Bruins
Stu was definitely a monster but not the best fighter, that title goes to Bob Probert in my opinion. During his time with the Wings he was THE heavyweight most guys feared.
I believe Vandenbussche’s left shoulder kept popping out at this time you can see he doesn’t throw the left much in this fight. he was on the Chris Nilan podcast talking about his time with the Rangers & being traded to Chicago.
January 9,1990, was Stu the GRIM reaper's worst nightmare 😱 Dave Brown was the undisputed heavyweight champ of the NHL. The most feared and destructive fighter to drop the gloves.
Imagine a world where you lack any talent other than barroom brawling. Now imagine that somebody offered you more money than you would make in 10 years to do that.
Noted. These aren't Top 5 Wins/KO, more Top 5 entertaining/must watch fights of a players career, although I obviously won't include a fight where the featured player gets KO'd lol. Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion though!
For his size as height and reach , Tie Domi was perhaps the greatest all-time pound for pound. His fight card was huge . Lost fights and won vs. some top-tier fighters . Domi was strong as an ox 🐂 Tie threw left or right punches that hurt bigger guys. Domi was a gamer that pulled you into a long drawn out battle to the finish. Domi did state in an interview that Bob Probert couldn't hurt tie. Domi said Probert could hit him 50 punches . Domi confessed that Dave Brown hurt Tie. Brown hit the hardest according to Domi. Did you ever feel sorry for a guy you beat? Probert answered Bob McGill, I took him out for beers after the game. Michael Landsberg asked Bob Probert. Who is the toughest guy in the NHL presently? Bob Probert answered, "George Laraque " Gino Odjick was once interviewed on Michael Landsberg off the record. Michael Landsberg asked Odjick. Who is the toughest guy you ever fought ? Hypocrite! Grimson on TV always crying about fighting and how bad it was for hockey. Made me sick because without fighting he woulda never played in the league. Guys like that are garbage to me.
I believe Grimson or Probert weren't injured due to the fight. Bob Probert wasn't known as a powerful puncher who seriously injured opponents . Joe Kocur, Dave Brown, Tony Twist, and Derek Boogaard packed devastating punches that broke bones. Rob Ray hit pretty hard as well. I almost forgot about Todd Ewen.... he knocked out Probert cold into outer space. NASA pickup up mysterious red wings flying around the moon 🌙

@Mike7911779 great insight. I checked the Thornton fight out he did pretty well and with no visor on. What a guy. His cut his other eye ironically...
Gotta say, this brought back a lot of memories of this NHL. The Chuck Norris division, Mtl/Que, Edm/Calgary. Tough way to make a living!
You have to love that the Red Wings took Probert, Kocur and Grimson in the same draft.
the 85-86 team also had Basil McRae - Todd McEwen - Gerard Gallant- John Barrett- Lane Lambert - Claude Loiselle - Warren Young - Harold Snepts ..... All of those guys could fight as well.....
It's hard to reconcile the Grim Reaper image with the handsome, soft spoken man in a suit that we see on tv. Great dude.
I always think the same thing when I see him on NHL Network. Lol.
You are exactly right. I met him and his sons at a business I worked at outside of Chicago. Could not have been a more quiet, nice, polite respectful man

his book was great .
This was awesome!!! Grimson tried to take your head off with every punch. Omg. My fav vid so far!!!
Grimson and Probert; epic; and they were buddies too.
I used to collect these fight tapes in the late 80s and early 90s. It was some kind of bootleg VHS thing you had to order. I got hours an hours of fights. Love this stuff
So did I😂😂
They used to sell them in The Hockey News
Nice👍👍
Me too. Still have some tapes
Me too, a guy in my bowling league sold tons of them at the flea market..the playoffs compilations were the best!
Stu was also a VERY nice guy off the ice .... He has ALWAYS been very approachable.
I remember the moving company I worked for moved him back in 2007. The truck driver said stu was religious.
That was EPIC!!! Love your vids dude. Can we get a Dave Brown Top 5 NHL fights?
Ha, he turtled in the end against Probert. Great fight. Bob Probert was a beast. R.I.P.
I always respected Grimson because he’d give dudes plenty of opportunity to move on and let it go before he made them regret not taking that opportunity.
They might have called him the grim reaper but in Edmonton we called him the gum wrapper.😂
Old fashion hockey 🏒....love it....wish it was back.
Me too bro
“And Shane Churla is cut……” is the understatement of the decade.
Great Video!!
Classic fights back in the day! Even the smaller guys like Gary Howatt, Stan Jonathan were beasts!!👊💪
Nobody was better than Proby. Nobody.
Probie having a jersey that came off easy and his nose packed with the booger sugar definitely helped.
Kocur was just as good. And Stu stepped up to the challenge every time it was time to go. All these guys belong to an elite tough guy club.

Stu could go with anyone. He fought Probert any time he wanted to go. Much love and respect to Stu. We were glad to have you as a Wing.

in back to back games
That was the most severe beat down in NHL history .
Great vid. Waiting for Paul Laus top 5.
Grimson is a great human
How can you not have the Reid Simpson KO? Purest punch I’ve ever seen.
Did well against probes considering bob pulled a rob ray and ejected his equipment.
I remember the Churla one and Shane Churla saying pre game how he has to avoid fighting due to his orbital bone 🤷🏻🤷🏻
Domi probably waited until Grimson was at the end of his shift.
To this day … Shane Churla still pisses his pants when the doorbell rings and forgets his name for a few minutes. Yup.
Stu is a lawyer. Nice guy. Check out his interview on Chris Nilan Sick Podcast. Excellent. Stu had a lot of respect for other fighters.

Why would stu getting beat by probert be one of his top 5 fights?
Was a great fight. No shame in losing to Probie.
Stu was going to win this fight until Probert parachuted out of his Jersey. 😂
MORE!!
McSorley can definitely take a punch. 👊

Beast!!!!
Grimson and Churla ex-teammates with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles in the IHL.
Uhhhhhh if you think this was Stu's top 5 fights, you have clearly missed a TON of damage of what he's done...
Stu was definitely a monster but not the best fighter, that title goes to Bob Probert in my opinion. During his time with the Wings he was THE heavyweight most guys feared.
Vandenbussche was, and knew, he was way out of his league but props for taking all those head shots and staying upright
I believe Vandenbussche’s left shoulder kept popping out at this time you can see he doesn’t throw the left much in this fight. he was on the Chris Nilan podcast talking about his time with the Rangers & being traded to Chicago.
Dave Brown destroyed this guy in back to back Oilers / Flames games
January 9,1990, was Stu the GRIM reaper's worst nightmare 😱 Dave Brown was the undisputed heavyweight champ of the NHL. The most feared and destructive fighter to drop the gloves.
Fierce Battles
what fights?

I Remember the ko while he was in los Angeles
Probert was a beast

In the UFC a 160 pounder doesn't fight a guy coming in at 225.
..Until he came to Edmonton and Big Bad Dave Brown smashed his face in....👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
Dave Brown was an absolute Killer! We'll be doing a Brownie vid in 2025 for sure!
@@EnforcersHockey One of my faves. Brown was a leftie and it gave him a bit of an edge.
#21 Big Dave Brown
Let’s go FLYERS 👍👍
He didnt beat Probert.
YESSSSSSSSSS!!
good thing he only hit Domi in the head because he is his head is empty
Stu was tough but got beat badly by Joe Kocur every time they fought!!!
Probert and his “exploding equipment” BS …..everything above his waist was held on with 4 1 inch pieces of scotch tape!
I got your point, but it wasn't ILLEGAL until the mandatory tie down rules came into effect in 1996.
It looks like he lost the first 4 fights of this video - took way too many hits to be considered a winner

Top 5 fights? first and last he kicked ass the others not so much.
Losing a good hard battle to a top tier figher is more worthy vs. beating up a low tier ranked fighter.
