I have major respect for (the historical) people in Hamilton, Laurens being one of them.
He fought for a country, he laid down his life. Well, actually the war was over, but he risked it.
When Alexander heard that he was killed, he made himself suffer, by drowning himself in work, for he thought it was his fault.
Alexander was never satisfied. Not with Angelica, Eliza, or Maria.
If you didn't know, Alexander and John wrote each other love letters, you search them up on the internet.
If I found out my best friend/soulmate died, i would make myself suffer just like Alexander did to himself.

Historically, Laurens was at the front of the battalion and got shot by several musket balls and fell from his horse, mortally wounded (dead). The Americans fled, but later returned to the site and retrieved Laurens body. Hamilton said of Laurens after his death:
“His career of virtue is at an end. How strangely are human affairs conducted that so many excellent qualities could not ensure a more happy fate? … I feel the loss of a friend I truly and most tenderly loved.”

thatlit theatregeek did the surviving troops really get 'returned to their masters' bc yea it's sad that the character died and Hamilton lost his friend but what gets my eyes really sweating is that he didn't even succeed at anything, he died in a battle his side lost and his dream was crushed, his character was basically only there to tug at heartstrings and without the musical he'd be completely forgotten in time...
This literally pushed me to a full on existential crisis in less than 2 minutes wtf I thought I didn't feel emotions anymore

In the workshop version of Hurricane there was a small part where Alex sung “The friend who would tell me not to do it is in the ground“ and you could hear John repeatedly saying: “Or you could let it go!“. So, yeah, Alex probably wouldn't have been a stupid feck, if John hadn't died.

Alex wouldn't have worked himself so hard, no Reynolds affair, therefore Eacker has nothing to make fun of him for, so Phillip doesn't die, which then would've let Alex think through his decision on who to vote for instead of being pressured into voting. and who knows, maybe Alex would've decided *not* to be dumdum and go off on Burr in the letter to Charles Cooper, thus avoiding the duel.

all his life he had been running from death his dad left them, his moma got sick and died, his cousin committed suicide, he almost dies in a hurricane and in the war that had just gotten over that Laurens his boyfriend dies in, and he feels like he's running out of time because he thought he finally escaped it, then Laurens dies, making him feel like death is catching back up, so he does more work because he's afraid he may die soon, referencing to the "I have to much work to do" and he wants to do a ton of meaningful work, so people remember him and Laurens and later when Burr asks "why do you write like you're running out of time" because he felt like he was, and he was doing it for Laurens. And the fact that they were 'reaturned to their masters' is showing that he really died for nothing. Also, his last words in the play were, "Raise a glass to freedom" Once again, referencing Laurens, which were his first words in The Story of Tonight. I know this is like, five years after this was posted, but I recently started getting back into Hamilton, and I had to share this bc this was one of my favorite videos while I was first into it.
