MARCH 13 UPDATE: There will be a very brief video update on the ARX. I had just tested the Underwood Xtreme Defender, using two blocks back to back, and while that was setup, decided to run three more of the ARX with the Glock 19. The outcome was MUCH improved, and actually consistent with the Xtreme Defender results I had just observed. I feel it is noteworthy to make public.
+The USA Wound channel nowhere near 2 inches, more like 1 to 1.25". Regardless of how any of these perform in gel, bone and variations in body density, not to mention shot placement; can throw everything in these tests on their rear end.
+tnoutdoors9 I'm carrying the .380 version in my AMT Backup. Used it last week to put down a road-kill deer for a deputy who was having problems with his Sig.... Only took 1 shot to the head from 4 feet. Deer instantly was DOA. I've seen still alive deer from TA's we had to put down and it took 3 or 4 JHP's at near contact distance to do what this 1 round did. Will be getting 9x19 versions for my carry weapon and patrol carbine to see if the behavior carries over.
+tnoutdoors9 also interesting my original box of ARX inceptor's(before Ruger) is not +p & says 74gr 1475fps/357 ft.lbs ...Is that possible? ......There are three types of people in the world, those that are good @ math & those that are not!
+MrVicDog They made it heavier because their older version in 9MM would not generate enough power to properly feed Ruger's American pistol. I got that information directly from Poly Case. In another test on UA-cam they had that same problem of feeding on a Walther pistol with the older 9MM version. The +P version was supposed to correct this.
I've run a wide range of defense ammo and am currently using the ARX. The lower weight of the round has a noticeable reduction in recoil, allowing me to get back on target just a little quicker. They also reduced my overall carry weight by 1oz, which makes a difference at the end of a ten hour day. Seeing the results of this test gives me plenty of confidence that it can stop a threat if needed. Thanks for the video!
3:39 The reason for this is that clear gel is far more elastic that organic gelatin. This is actually a good thing in this context because human tissue is also much more elastic than gelatin. Organic gelatin just tears more easily from the temporary stretch cavity. The "damage" seen in my test of ARX is really only representative of the relatively large stretch cavity caused by the relatively high velocity.
Nicely done TN, I think I'll stick with my Gold Dots and HST's. You're an ammo Legend in the youtube community TN, because of the full amount of information you give along with your ammo testing. A big Thumbs-Up!!!. Its good to see you back here and on Full 30.
Interesting results Dave ... been carrying the HST (230gr/147gr) ever since you tested them many moons ago. Glad to see one of the best channels on UA-cam back in action ... good stuff.
Did I read that right?.....your done? Dang sorry to hear that. I know it was a lot of work doing all the videos and I wanted to thank you for sharing all the results and for your time, I really enjoyed all of them. Thanks again.
GREAT video! I'm so glad to see ballistics tests from you again. The insight and raw data you provide to us, the shooting public is invaluable. Thanks, TNOutdoors9!
First a cold beer after work, and now a new video from everyone's favorite ammo reviewer. Excellent review. I have commented from the beginning when this round was first introduced that over-penetration would be a problem. Thank you for the validation. Have a great weekend.
You sir are a gentlemen and a scholar. I currently own 4 handguns. 3 different calibers and all 4 are loaded with ammo based on your reviews. Thank you for the time and effort to help others in the gun community. Best of luck to you and yours in the future. Thanks again and best regards
I am former military and law enforcement. my colleagues and I all believe you put out the best videos on UA-cam. we were thrilled you decided to continue making videos and typically choose our personal carry ammo based on your thorough and unbiased testing. keep up the great work and good bless.
+Charles Bronson Thank you Charles! I must add that I have thoroughly enjoyed your movies over the years. "The Dirty Dozen" is still one of my late-night favorites. And thank you for your service.
Okay sir, I'm a bit late commenting this, but I have to for old time's sake. "IT'S THE HAMMER OF THOR!!!!" lol so privileged to have you back man! You're the best consumer advocate for ammo that I know of.
Thanks for coming back. The comments that this is a "gimmick" don't fit. It is not perfect, but is a significant step toward possible improvement. I applaud the maker (or original designer of this type of ammo) for thinking outside of the box. Would love to hear more on the recoil. I see this as a much better low-recoil option for sensitive shooters.
I just got an ad for a flashlight and they chose to demonstrate its ‘power’ by shining it at a passing commercial plane. The plane instantly exploded. Aside from that, nice review for a potential carry ammunition.
As for the "it doesn't work as well in clear gel" claim..... if a bullet only works well in one type of gel then I'm not sure I would rely on it. The Gold Dots and HSTs aren't picky about what type of gel you shoot them into. They work well ALL the time. Nice video. Welcome back!
I was very skeptical of the polymer/copper alloy too. So a few weeks ago I actually bought some raw pork ribs, stood them up in front of a block of ballistic gel, and shot them with the same round featured in this video and the results were brutal! It not only went right through the bone but left a golf ball sized hole where it impacted! On top of that splinters of bone fragments were spread throughout the wound cavity created in the ballistic gel behind the ribs! The round ended up passing through the gel block but the block was only 10" long anyways and it had to pass through real bone and muscle tissue first. Plus most videos on youtube that use 10% gelatin show that they stop before 18" anyways.
This company is able to market what is essentially a plastic injection molded training bullet with material costs measured in pennies and sell them for 18.99 for a box of 25.. Give the guy in marketing who came up with installing the flutes and marketing them as "Self Defense Rounds" a big fat raise, He's earned it..
I purchased 300 rds of 50 grn rds that go 1700 fps and hit as hard as a 45 acp standard rd. They are super light in the mag. I am really impressed with them for carry. They create an impressive wound channel. I seriously pray that I or my family are never in a position where we have to use deadly force for defense of life or serious bodily harm.
As always, thanks for the in depth testing and pertinent data. I, like you picked up a box of this stuff (.45 ACP) merely out of curiosity. I haven't utilized it yet but I am glad to see what it does and doesn't do. While I believe that the ultimate goal is for your viewers to think for themselves I really do appreciate your opinion on the matter. The tests that you do really do speak for themselves. Glad to see vids from you again.
When I ran into you in January, while watching John at the East Room, I had really hoped you'd do something cool like this. Thanks man! I'm so glad you're back at it!!!
Great to have you back and testing again ! Nice tests and thanks for the work. Your tests prove why sticking with proven performers is always your safest bet, both for your life and legal defense in court if needed.
Yes and using "proven results" -more accurately "standard results" at the expense of saying there is no room for improvement and change cause this "works the best for right now" is not very forward thinking or going to produce advancements in ballistics.
VERY glad to see you doing your excellent videos again, hope all is well. You may or may not know, but a lot of gun and ammo related forums frequently reference your videos, and for a good reason. Good work !
Solid copper hydraulic rounds seem to perform better than these polymer copper powder ones. But these polymer ones do have the advantage that they are very frangible shooting steel targets at close range. So they aren't a dud, but maybe a niche.
Greetings from Northeast Indiana! SO glad you're back! Been a subscriber for a long time now, and this is by far the best channel for ammo reviews from a no bs unbiased fellow gun lover! Keep up the awesome work!
Fantastic video. Great camera shots, good editing, direct and to the point. Great job. Love the clear gel and bringing back the 147 hst as comparison is probably my favorite portion of the test. Great video all around. Can't wait for more.
You do the best gel tests on youtube :D Nice to have you back, this is one of the first channels I ever subscribed to, now i'm starting to make some of my own video's
I got some of this for my Taurus TCP 738 because of the recoil with standard JHPs. However, for 9, 10 and 45 I'll stick with HSTs and GDHPs. Great test and thanks, TN. Glad you're back.
Exactly what I use it for. As a NON-LEO, my requirements are to give the perp a time to re-think while I run like hell. As such, I don't nee elephant guns.
Every time I think I might want to update my carry load, I am reminded that the boxes I have of Gold Dot 124 +P and HST 147 are still the best on the market, and I save my money.
Just shot this ARX ammo through my Kahr CT380. Very accurate by had constant Failure to feeds, stove pipes, etc. Gun fired six other self defense rounds and two ball ammo flawlessly. Darn, wanted this to work. Just to light to cycle the Kahr.
It is great to see you doing ammo reviews again. You have the best ammo reviews on UA-cam. I would like to see a test on Freedom Munitions standard remanufactured 147 grain HP.
You have done some of the best videos on UA-cam. Sticking to the proper protocols and interpretations, this is one of the go to channels. Good to see you back old man.
A friend was all hyped up about this ammo for his .45. I told him penetration wasn't great. We caught 2 out of 12 in a 2 liter bottle filled with water. Both were mostly intact, with one being unchanged except the marks made by the rifling. He was shocked we caught them. I will just stick with normal hollow points. Gold dot is the standard.
Great video, I really enjoyed the new barrier tests. I heard about this type of bullet a few months ago and was eager to give it a test. I got the .40 caliber ones, fired out of a glock 23 4.5 inch lone wolf barrel into a block of clear ballistics gelatin 10%. I got the exact same results, over penetration. With and without the denim. Also one thing to note, some would turn left and go out the side of the block. I believe it may have been due to my barrel having a left hand twist, giving it a bit of "English" when it entered the gel. I emailed polycase and told them about my results. They told me the synthetic gel is not as fluid as the true ballistics gel and would obscure the results. Same as they told you I bet.
Thank you so much for your (I don't know what else to call it but obsessive!) thorough, and meticulous videos. Most of us either can't afford to perform these tests, can't do them where we live legally, or both, so this "ballistics nerd" information is critical, informative and CAN SAVE LIVES. PLEASE keep up the great work. I love learning about new technology like this, and am a big fan of lead free projectiles. Though I feel ruger should work on making these a bit more frangible if they're going to be used for home/business defence.
Excellent video review !! Thank you for all your work on these, I think I have gained more knowledge about handgun ballistics from watching your channel than just about anywhere else. Thanks from just north of the border !
Thank you for such a thorough review process. I would strongly suggest looking into the Underwood Xtreme Defense round in .380, compared to the results you got here with all rounds. The .380 Xtreme Defense round will produce a LARGER wound cavity than all these 9mm rounds, and will penetrate 14 - 18 inches. This is why I carry this round. You will be impressed. Also, it is solid copper and does very well going through barriers.

+robert h When Ruger took it over they made the bullet heavier and it pushed the pressure into the +P level.

Difference between carrying a pen in your pocket and not carrying a pen lol.

Problem is only initial tissue is elastic. organs, and bones which make up more mass and size than just elastic tissue

Yes, that is correct. This should have been final last year or in 2014.
It's so good to have you back! Great video.
GREAT video! I'm so glad to see ballistics tests from you again. The insight and raw data you provide to us, the shooting public is invaluable. Thanks, TNOutdoors9!
Another video that makes me happy I have a pistol loaded up with 147-grain +P HST rounds next to me. They never seem to fail.
tno9, You have again cemented the reasons I carry 124gr +P Gold Dot and HST in 124gr and 147gr. Thank you and glad to have to back in productions.

Great video. It's good to have you back!
I cannot tell you Enough how happy, we as a UA-cam Community Are to have you back!
Once again producing Premiere footage, & Education.
Excellent test, Brett Favre. It's nice to see the Gold Dot & HST shine past the latest gimmick round to hit the market.
+I Fought Piranhas I have to agree. The newest isn't necessarily the best. Seems some things just don't need to change. ;)
thank you for everything you put into your testing, I for one always appreciate it

No it was much bigger than that. If he got hit by an ARX that part of his leg would've been turned into ground meat.
This is the first time I have ever heard of polymer ammo. Thank you for the video. It was very informative.
An unbelievable amount of work and preparation went into making this video. We really appreciate what you do! Keep up the good work!

No ARX for me. I'll stick with my HST
Thanks for an extensive test the new Ruger Bullet. We all are very curious about the polymer bullet.
So pretty much HST and gold dot are still the shit

Boojy Trash Boi hst may be a poor performance due to under Penatration
Yup. Been my personal fav for about 10 years now . . .
@T Grun Just about as good but half the price or close to it if you can find them.
Excellent work! I will stay with the jacketed hollow point ammo. Glad to have you back!
Greetings from Northeast Indiana! SO glad you're back! Been a subscriber for a long time now, and this is by far the best channel for ammo reviews from a no bs unbiased fellow gun lover! Keep up the awesome work!
Watching these is like meditation to me. So relaxing.
So happy to see that you are testing again..... Thanks
Glad to see you reviewing ammo again. Your vids were essential for me learning the differences in 9mm back in the day.
Good to see you up and testing ammo Tnoutdoors9! Stay healthy this year!
How about Winchester Black Talon? Glaser safety slugs, silver or blue?
Glad you feel well enough to get back to testing. Welcome back.
I'm glad you decided to come back! Keep up the good work!
Cheers, ASC.

Very good video, its nice to see a review that doesn't have a bunch of personal bias built in from the start.
Awesome---you're doing ammo reviews again!
Great to see my favorite ammo channel back in action.
You do the best gel tests on youtube :D
Nice to have you back, this is one of the first channels I ever subscribed to, now i'm starting to make some of my own video's
so glad u are back! we need more high quality ammo testing contents.
Ahhhhh, a tnoutdoors9 ammo review. So good to have you posting something new. Thanks for the work you put into your videos.
SO glad to have you back! thanks for Thursday review on this poly round. I think I'll stick to my HSTs.
Lehigh max expansion
Lehigh max expansion
glad to see you back again your work is priceless !!!!!
I got some of this for my Taurus TCP 738 because of the recoil with standard JHPs. However, for 9, 10 and 45 I'll stick with HSTs and GDHPs. Great test and thanks, TN. Glad you're back.

Great review! Its new technology in self defense ammo, and it was good to see it tested side by side with proven self defense ammo.
Thank you so much for these ammo reviews! I Absolutely Love the expansion on the Federal HST's and I want it to be my EDC ammo for Maximum damage!
Just shot this ARX ammo through my Kahr CT380. Very accurate by had constant Failure to feeds, stove pipes, etc. Gun fired six other self defense rounds and two ball ammo flawlessly. Darn, wanted this to work. Just to light to cycle the Kahr.

Excellent review. The guy at my lgs was promoting the heck out of this, nice to know it was mostly hype
Long time subscriber, just love your videos. I could binge watch your ammo test vids and never get tired of watching them. Great job as usual.👍
Ballistic evaluation.........done right. Welcome back
Thank you TN for a very informative video. I'm glad you compared the ARX bullet to two proven LE loadings. I hope to see more 9mm and 45 testings.
Great video, very informative! Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Awesome, fair and thorough. You saved a few dollars and used them this time (smile), beating out the rest of the ammo testers hands down.
A Tn9outdoors ammo review, I had to make sure it wasn't Christmas cause that is what it felt like. Thanks for making my day.
Glad to see you back, TN. I appreciate the time and effort you put into your vids. Thank you.
Always good to see a new ammo test video from you.
You haven't lost your touch. This was an awesome video, i missed these.
Welcome back! Awesome video. I will say first video I have seem were multiple mediums were used in tandem with gel.
Glad to see your new video Pop up. Welcome back.
Great video! Man, I'm glad you're back!

I will just stick with normal hollow points. Gold dot is the standard.
great video
Great video, I really enjoyed the new barrier tests. I heard about this type of bullet a few months ago and was eager to give it a test. I got the .40 caliber ones, fired out of a glock 23 4.5 inch lone wolf barrel into a block of clear ballistics gelatin 10%. I got the exact same results, over penetration. With and without the denim. Almost every video I have watched from your channel sounds like its raining in the background lol 👍🇺🇸
Your reviews are the best. I am so so happy you're using clear ballistic now lol
Great to see you back! I love the new protocols.
