Amazon/Ebay DIY Rear Bumper Kit for Jeep XJ

- I was going to design and build my own rear bumper for my Jeep XJ until I priced the materials. Steel is a bit pricey at the moment and I didn't want to spend 500 dollars on material to build a bumper when I could just buy one at that price. I did find a DIY bumper on Amazon that seemed reasonable at around 150 bucks. At least its a starting point!

Built that same one a couple months ago. My solution to the height problem was to modify the plate that mounts to the jeep itself. That way the whole bumper is raised that half inch or so. If I were smart I would have made a new plate with slot holes for adjustability because I spent so much time trying to weld the mounting ears back on straight.
Great Job Rick I like the look of that bumper as well and will order it.
Hey Rick, good to see you back! Geez I love watching you do the projects I’m incapable of doing! I guess it’s obvious who my ‘go to’ guy’s gonna be when I need fabrication work done when I’m in your neighborhood! Great job on the bumper! Stay safe! ~Jim~
Thanks 👍
Very nice, I did the front bumper kits last year, and I am about done with the rear right now....haven't put on the mounting plates just yet, I'm a little nervous about getting them right. Probably try to put it into place and tack it just to be certain. The mounts for the front were much simpler.
looking good. great info.
Thanks, it was a fun project.
This is too funny. I live right outside San Antonio on the NW side. Working on the same bumper. Hoping to do a tire carrier too
do you have any idea where I can get my hands on some 1.25" .083 or .095 round tube? Im having a helluva time!
Interstate battery has the batteries for shields.
Any reason you didn't buy the hitch stiffening adapters? I plan on doing the pair of bumpers and the more i look the more it seems like a no brainer especially if you plan to use the bumper as a hitch or a recovery point. also if you have used the hitch have you seen any bending?? I'm worried about the bumper flexing. with a little trailer tongue weight. Thank You!
haven't used the receiver yet. Don't know it I'll tow with it, but its good to know I can. We will see. after all its a 130 dollar bumper
What size if your welder? I have a 110 dc that can weld 3/16 and wondering if that will work for this.
that should suffice!
What was your overall width? Looking at buying one of these to modify for my suburban.
64"
Nice job Rick.I don't see how they can afford to sell those kits so cheap...
me neither.
They copied the design of antother company and they prob manufactured them by thousands at one time sell to bunch dif names brands. One make to 20 dif buyers
Ya you don't have the length to to a rear tire carrier 😂😂😂
you sure about that?
@@dzlfreek It looks like you only have like an inch or come out your bracket.
But something can be fabricated up that's just what I saw
I feel sorry if you have to do a real recovery with those brackets mounted straight to the factory bumper mount. I used there builder brackets instead dirtboundoffroad.com/products/rear-bumper-builder-brackets-jeep-cherokee-xj-84-01
