  • One popular upgrade for the XJ is the WJ knuckle swap. This upgrade gives you larger brake rotors and double piston calipers, greatly improving brake performance. This video gives the viewer information pertinent to the conversion - tools needed, parts needed including product links to new parts and insight into some of the obstacles you may experience doing it.

    I have just got over having laser surgery to fix some drain holes in my eyes and having cataract surgery. I can sympathize with your situation. One positive note, cataract surgery does have the possibility to improve your eyesight with some lens adjustments. My lenses made it so I don't need glasses to drive but I still need reading glasses. I thought it was a good trade off. Worth a thought. Looking forward to a positive result for you. 🤕

    Good REAL world video! These guys kill me when they make a video saying, "next all we have to do is install this whatchamacallit, now onto this".They don't say anything about something going wrong or being the wrong part and that it took a whole day or several extra hours getting past that point! And they never get dirty?

    Dude! Everything I do on mine is like that! Finally getting around to mounting my Ironman Shackle Relocation Brackets only to find out after test fitting the rear driver side first and drilling the holes. The main bumper brackets for the new XRC Rock Crawler bumper are going to have to be installed under the shackle brackets or modified to sit on top with spacers on the third nut strip bolt with the rear mounting holes elongated, but there's not enough room on the top two holes? It's always something!

    I totally would have set it on Jack stands, put it in 4 hi and ground the hubs to size with an angle grinder...
    But I have a WJ and I'm going to figure out an axle swap and long arm lift when I go for big tires.

    • @dzlfreek
      @dzlfreek  2 роки тому +1

      That doesn't sound sketchy at all! Fortunately I have a belt grinder. Id swap to one ton axles if I planned on going to 35s or bigger. but then things start to get ridiculous! You start chasing the weekest link and drivability goes out the window. For me 33s seem like a good compromise for a daily driver/overlander.

      @@dzlfreek yeah, looking at what people do, I think they wind up eliminating too many bushings, unintentionally huge scrub radius (and bad front axle geometry in general) , heavy springs instead of appropriate damping, no anti-sway bar and excessive weight with a high CG. I'm hoping that I can keep my WJ sitting pretty low, driving good on the streets and with a wheel swap be a pretty decent rock crawler that can travel dirt roads at speed.

    I'm still waiting to see if anyone just uses the WJ Hub Bearing unit for this swap, and the differences. People have talked about it, but nobody has clearly explained why that won't work. I've already done this conversion on my 98 using the 01 xj wheel bearing, but there are a lot more aftermarket wheel options out there for the 5x5 lug pattern. I wouldn't be opposed to swapping out, and so far the only reason I have seen that people don't use the WJ Hub is because of the bolt pattern. I'm sure there are other reasons, just not clear on what they are. My rears are already set up to convert for 5x5, all I have to do is relocate the studs as the axle shaft is pre-drilled for both lug patterns. Would make trail repairs much easier if all I had to do was source a WJ Hub or rotor that can be obtained at any parts store.

      probably the splines and the bearing offset are different because the half shafts use a CV joint instead of a U joint....but im just guessing
