Yes I suppose it is a contradiction and if a man chooses to sport / wear an untidy dirty looking beard then that's his choice. My meaning and my opinion is that a well kept clean and tidy beard is of a far far better appearance than the opposite, and it shows you very much care and take a pride in your appearance. Same goes for the clothes that we wear, but YES it's down to personal choice. My choice is always clean, smart and tidy.
It should generally taper from your side burns to create separation from your hair. Depending on your face shape/jaw line, you can shape it differently to accent your facial features. You could have a bushier mustache, squared or rounded sides, etc.
One of the things I needed to comment on is that making a jaw line go down to the Adam's apple can work for very thin men and men with the strong jaw. Some men without the strongest jawline and jutting chin or men that don't have the clearest delineation of neck to chin, do need to trim the jaw line to take the attention away from a weak jaw, or a possible double chin, I know she used the photo of Steven Spielberg, and his face is an extreme example. It's that fine balance between a well sculpted beard, or the dreaded neck beard. With a beard it's never one size fits all.

I love saving the money but I don't usually get the best haircuts. I'm used to better. I've been sporting a full beard lately but usually I use a nice straight razor for the clean look. My step son is opposite from me. He seems to love being grungy and smelly. He has a full beard and that looks like hell. He refuses to comb it or keep it clean. His brother is the same way but his beard and mustache seems to serve as a mask to hide behind...pretty wierd really.

Clean shave every 3-4 days and go for the stubble look. Much easier.

Do whatever you want. You can just use a trimmer or razor. The argument that the hair grows back thicker was debunked 50 years ago. The hair grows out with the same thickness either you pull out the hair or trim or shave it. The argument she puts forward only shows her ignorance on the subject.

Ill just say, after i grew my stache out i get tons of compliments from both genders lol, but mine is really nice and thick ron swanson type stache
