  • Nathan Laube, Assistant Professor of Music at the Eastman School of Music, performs Julius Reubke’s colossal sonata in four movements. Each movement is inspired by texts from the 94th Psalm. The performance was recorded live at the 2015 Mid-Atlantic Regional Convention of the American Guild of Organists in Pittsburgh at St. Paul Roman Catholic Cathedral. Laube played the cathedral’s 97-rank mechanical action organ installed by Rudolf von Beckerath in 1962.

    I am honored to have served as co-chair of the Program Committee for this convention. This video does a fantastic job of capturing the audio and video, but the one thing it cannot fully convey is the electricity in the room during this performance. A night to remember, for sure!

    "Lord God to whom vengeance belongeth; show thyself" (Ps 94)
    I start with that, because I was stupid enough to criticise Nathan Laub when he was much younger. It is therefore a special pleasure to admit that I was very, very wrong. This is a truly magnificent performance from a passionate MUSICIAN rather than just an organist.
    Nathan can take delight in the fact that he has been avenged well and truly, and I take back every word with humble pleasure.
    The short version is 'Well played maestro!"

    Nathan your performance was epic. You brought all the passion and color full to overflowing in your performance. Your performance of this great work without music cluttering up the rack has additionally placed you above the very best. BRAVO,,well done.

    Excellent camera work esp the one showing the performer with the nave stretching out behind him. A definite Salicional Award for cinematography and sound, never mind the award for choreography to Nathan.

    Cool. I got to play this organ once. A cousin of mine was a priest stationed at the Cathedral, I think it was in the late 70's or early 80's. The same builder put an organ in at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, where I live now.

    Wow! I've waited 40 years for a performance which matches that played by British organist Roger Fisher at Chester Cathedral back in the early 1970's.
    That is also on UA-cam, and makes a fascinating comparison.

    For me Reubke , F.Liszt, and sometime Reger not good organists and composers for organ;
    they use the organ like a piano; so not good ; like if i write music for organ and i play on piano, not away one good work . THESE IT'S MY IDEA. OLIVER MESSIAEN good composer but not good away for organ.
