Awesome video dood, I do miss the days of secret arcade characters. I remember being told stories about Akuma, even seeing it for myself the first time was really cool.
That's not an entirely accurate explanation of the Valle CC. Valle CC is activating while the opponent is still standing and is unable to block low and gets swept. it doesn't have to do with blowback. Generally, when the Valle CC happens is when the opponent is just within sweep range and is caught standing. They are not close enough for blowback to matter.
@Sir Solid Snail You avoid it by 1) not getting into that range, 2) baiting it by walking forward and blocking low before the activate. You might be able to also counter CC but timing is strict.
@Sir Solid Snail I'm sure that's how a lot of people felt when Valle first discovered it and using it on them. Probably thought their controls were broken. The reason why it happens is because the game doesn't give the person enough time to go into the crouch block animation before the attack comes out and hits them. So when someone has CC, it's always dangerous to be standing within their sweep range. You have to be ready to counter CC or try to bait them to waste their meter.
That hit me, SFA2 is 25 years old....Jesus, I am old af. I remember playing this in the arcade, on Super Nintendo and again on Mame about a decade later.
Why is he considered worse than ryu though? Everything you listed seemed like they would at least make him the same tier as ryu, if not better. Are the multi-hit shoyuken and lower health really enough to make him tiers worse?
Lower health is always a big deal. In an even match you're gonna be trading blows a lot, that's just how it goes with evenly matched opponents. If one person has less health, well... that's attrition, baby!
I genuinely feel bad for kids that didn't get to grow up in a pre-internet era, when the playground was this bottomless well of rumors and lies that could never be confirmed or denied. "Did you know if you beat Mortal Kombat II ten times in a row without getting hit you can play as naked Lara Croft??"
I remember being in a group at the Arcade and we all watched for the first time a accidental Fatality performed on Mortal Kombat the Cheers were so loud it echoed through out the Mall, I know these are Hidden Characters but if someone were to see Evil Ryu for the first time I think it went something like that.
I was just playing this dude in Arcade mode yesterday lol Also, I like the concept of EX characters shown with Dhalsim and Zangief in Alpha 2, but I've barely seen anyone cover this.
Also, the japanese version of SF30th collection has the American arcade versions as well as the Japanese version iirc. So when we can get together again, there might be a possibility that Evil Ryu can be unbanned even in in-person Alpha 2 tournaments. Just my cup of tea though, I'm nowhere near a beginner when it comes to in-person fighting game tournaments.
"Next question: In Street Fighter Alpha 2, Evil Ryu was banned in tournament play for 25 years because..." "He was overpowered?" "..." "He needed to... be accessed with a secret code?" "..." "He was... too... similar to Akuma?" "..." "...his blowback was too large?" "He was only in the American release" "Are you fu-"
I remember when mvc1 came out in arcades the liquor store by my school had it and i was the only one who knew the roll code lol everyone didnt have any codes until the owner got them from japan lol yeah roll lmao
This video brought me back to my High School days, when I used to bunk lessons to play SFA2 in London. I was one of the few who knew how to select Evil Ryu and who also knew which machines ran the American version to find him on. That made me feel cool at the time, good memories 😎
I think this might be a good moment for me to start exploring the Street Fighter Alpha games. It seems like a full branch of the franchise I'm missing out here that could be extremely fun to me.
I really like the filter on this video (if there is one) hard to tell if it’s not direct arcade capture given it’s also the correct aspect ratio. Footage looks really nice
The prerequisites for fighting Akuma in ST is just to get to the end without continuing. You can even cheese it by having the other player "come in" if you're about to lose
watching videos like this is the sort of shit that inspires me to write fgc movesets for my own characters. having to think about options, ranges, counterplay, all makes it so fun to design these kits
Another huge custom-combo related advantage E.Ryu has - an opponent CC-activation cannot pass through E.Ryu's DP. Ken's DP is like this too, but you can safely pass through Akuma and regular Ryu's DP by baiting them then activating. Thanks for this video - I never knew about the full-screen activation that's crazy
He grew up playing it before the internet became a thing. Then, when he learned that it was actually pronounce reeeyou, he just said “yeah, no. That sounds stupid. Ryeyou for life.” At least if he is anything like me :)
Great video. But one correction. Blowback is not related to valle CC. Blowback simply kills any active attack. Thats it. Valle cc, if you are not already holding db, you cannot enter any inputs for 9 frames, regardless if blowback happens or not. Otherwise, great video!
@@Veri7as wow, I can't find it anywhere, i figured i could find a video of it on youtube to link but... nada? - and it's weird because I remember it only worked on the player 2 side, which made it pretty unique but I can't find anything online... Thanks for this video, I've recently picked up A2 evil ryu and it was pretty funny as all the unique features of the character you brought up were things I had discovered whilst playing him, fun character
Man I miss the arcade and even couch play sometimes. It was a time where you were forced to learn how to actually play by trial and error, and if you got stomped (which happened a lot as you were learning) you deal with it. But what you didn't do is scream about "the balancing" and hold up the machine if you lost. That outright cheating, and worst of all relentless trolling/s*** talking could get you hurt in an arcade. Lol. Awesome video! I didn't know Evil Ryu was mid tier either. Lol. A banned mid tier character? Who knew.
As decisive as custom combos are in SFA2, I say that tier list will soon change if more skilled players play Evil Ryu. Everything you do in this game goes to shit when you get hit by a cc. It's a huge comeback factor.
I wonder why people think there is a vowel between the R and the y in Ryu. Especially when they then go on to say it correctly by not adding a vowel when saying shoryuken
@@johnarbuckle9345 It's because they're projecting English pronunciation rules onto romanizations of Japanese words. /ʃɔɹ.ju.kɛn/ is phonotactically possible in English, but a single syllable /ɹju/ isn't. The letter "y" is pronounced /aɪ/ in English words such as "style", so English speakers seeing "Ryu" by itself assume that it has to be a two-syllable /raɪ.u/, because the single syllable form just can't happen in English.
Could've typed "Ree-you" or something along those lines. Typing the actual name and telling someone to say it "like that" looks really pretentious. Also "Riyu" could still be pronounced as "Ree-you".
Oh man, 14 year old me was rad as hell picking Hwang in Soul Edge. Some random old dude did the code once, and I just asked him how do it, not thinking he would share.
@@shalltear159 Yeah obviously, but the person in the video we're commenting on isn't Japanese, and has likely used this pronunciation for a long time. Japanese native speakers don't pronounce in Ree ooo either as they can't pronounce R's correctly.

He's saying the name as it is localized in the language his country speaks. Actually learn Japanese and see that your name (unless it's Japanese) actually sounds different in Japanese. Pronunciation varies from language to language, even when there are name equivalents.
The Valle CC is not the Blowback unblockable. As far as I know *that* was known already. The Valle CC is that even if people are OUTSIDE of the blowback range and they are not already crouch blocking on the frame you activate CC, they cannot block the low that comes out after. Thus you can even unblockable at at full sweep range.

"Did you know if you beat Mortal Kombat II ten times in a row without getting hit you can play as naked Lara Croft??"
Oh man, I remember trying so hard to unlock Sheng Long in the original SFII
Wait, alpha 2 had air blocking? Does any other street fighter have this?
Alpha 1 and 3
Only in the Alpha series but it's a shockingly interesting mechanic.
Only Alpha series, but I think we should have a new Alpha game
Capcom vs SNK 2 has it also evne thought it's not a traditional SF game.
@@Not_Astrocat Capcom won’t make a new entry to an old sub-series if it’s not SF2. At best, we may get something like a ‘HD Remix’ Alpha game one day.
I remember being in a group at the Arcade and we all watched for the first time a accidental Fatality performed on Mortal Kombat the Cheers were so loud it echoed through out the Mall, I know these are Hidden Characters but if someone were to see Evil Ryu for the first time I think it went something like that.
Short answer: Only available in the American arcade version so banned as other locations wouldn't have had access to him
I was just playing this dude in Arcade mode yesterday lol
Also, I like the concept of EX characters shown with Dhalsim and Zangief in Alpha 2, but I've barely seen anyone cover this.
Bruh, your channel is wild
Keep it up
ooooooh you featured Grant in this video’s intro, my man
"Next question: In Street Fighter Alpha 2, Evil Ryu was banned in tournament play for 25 years because..."
"He was overpowered?"
"..."
"He needed to... be accessed with a secret code?"
"..."
"He was... too... similar to Akuma?"
"..."
"...his blowback was too large?"
"He was only in the American release"
"Are you fu-"
What do you call the genre of video you make? Fighting game analysis I suppose, but there’s a lot of these types of channels and I love them
I think the general term might still be "video essays/editorials" even though these are way smaller than standard video essays.
@@kholdkhaos64ray11 I love these type of things and just want to watch everyone that on the internet they are so interesting
I remember when mvc1 came out in arcades the liquor store by my school had it and i was the only one who knew the roll code lol everyone didnt have any codes until the owner got them from japan lol yeah roll lmao
This type of content is inspirational. I hope you reach 100k this year.
Just as I was bored, new vid
Who the hell is Rye-you?
I really like the filter on this video (if there is one) hard to tell if it’s not direct arcade capture given it’s also the correct aspect ratio. Footage looks really nice
Evil Ryu's forward+medium kick sobat juggles, Ryu's doesn't
Great video.
Alpha 2 revival, indeed! The first FPGA implementation of the original hardware releases tomorrow.
Every time he says "Rayu", Capcom makes parrying one frame more lenient.
I've never used custom combos in Alpha 2 before. I knew about them in SFA3, but only realized them since seeing your Rose video.
Heh, I had no idea that Evil Ryu used to be an US arcade only character
honestly same
The prerequisites for fighting Akuma in ST is just to get to the end without continuing. You can even cheese it by having the other player "come in" if you're about to lose
watching videos like this is the sort of shit that inspires me to write fgc movesets for my own characters. having to think about options, ranges, counterplay, all makes it so fun to design these kits
Puffy Puff sounds like tons of fun, good for you...😎 salutations from California.
Could you make a video talking about Corner pressure in fighting games?
Subbed, I'm glad I found another great fighting game content creator.
Japan has Ryu, America has Raiyu
That’s how it would be pronounced according to English rules. “Style” for example. So it makes sense.
@@Noplayster13 the name isnt english so
@@RunehearthCL but the people pronouncing it when the game came out were.
@@Noplayster13 And people can't change after years? lol
@@RunehearthCL sure they can. But some choose not to :) “LOL”
I love the fighting game theory! Can you go into KOF? It's a bit niche, but I'd love your take on them!
"Evil Rye-ooh"
Bro. Why. I mean... I really liked the vid, but... Just why.
He grew up playing it before the internet became a thing. Then, when he learned that it was actually pronounce reeeyou, he just said “yeah, no. That sounds stupid. Ryeyou for life.”
At least if he is anything like me :)

@@KurosakiNaturo You wanted to know why man. Be careful what you wish for.
Very informative! Thanks!
I appreciate you working hard to support the gaming community.. great work.
I played street fighter for about 10 years and never heard about Evil Raiyou. Thanks to that video, now i know more
Even fighting game UA-camrs can’t pronounce Ryu.
I was in the scene when Alex unveiled the Valle CC against John Choi. I can't believe people are talking about it still.
Great video. But one correction. Blowback is not related to valle CC. Blowback simply kills any active attack. Thats it.
Valle cc, if you are not already holding db, you cannot enter any inputs for 9 frames, regardless if blowback happens or not.
Otherwise, great video!
TL:DW
Evil Ryu was banned because he was only featured in the American arcade release.
TL;DW*
He also has an infinite - I always thought that's why he was banned tbh.
What's his infinite?
@@Veri7as wow, I can't find it anywhere, i figured i could find a video of it on youtube to link but... nada? - and it's weird because I remember it only worked on the player 2 side, which made it pretty unique but I can't find anything online... I need to wrack my brain to recall how it worked and I'll put up a video. it was really easy to do and involved air tatsus... let me mess around in MAME after work.
I'll be honest I've never heard of him having an infinite and when I asked around no one had either. So I'm interested to see this.
IMO the funniest outcome would be if someone discovered some crazy busted tech with him that caused him to get banned again.
"Evil RYE-YOU"
Guess that's as far as I'm going with this video.
your loss, take care!
Thanks for this video, I've recently picked up A2 evil ryu and it was pretty funny as all the unique features of the character you brought up were things I had discovered whilst playing him, fun character
Lol, imagine being a person, in 2021, pronouncing Ryu as "Rye-ooh"
I've never understood why SFA shotos do that weird pose when ground bouncing.
I wonder why some people still insist on calling the main character Rah-Yu.
Insisting? I don't think they're insisting. It's just what they like to call him
@@Windraesa But it’s not 1994 anymore. Everyone should know how to pronounce it. It’s not an opinion - there’s a correct way and an incorrect way.
It's a huge comeback factor.
super video man!
the only thing i ddin't like is how you pronnounce RYU.
The rest is PERFECT! 🙌🙌🙌
Evil Raiyu
Akuma and Ryu CAN Kara raging demon in Sa2. Don’t know why he says there aren’t these moves in the game
Oh plz dude say "Ryu", not Riyu
No. His name will forever be pronounced Ryeyou and you can’t stop me ;)
Could've typed "Ree-you" or something along those lines.
Each time he says Riu instead of Ryu a kitty dies
How do you pronounce the name Ryan?
For me it sounded like Rayu which is worse
@@TheJexy13 In case you weren't aware, the name "Ryan" does not originate from the country Japan.
Each time the pronunciation of a fictional character’s name triggers you an angel gets his wings.
@@shalltear159 Yeah obviously, but the person in the video we're commenting on isn't Japanese, and has likely used this pronunciation for a long time. Japanese native speakers don't pronounce in Ree ooo either as they can't pronounce R's correctly.
Having a harrier in the background is so badass
Every time I see SF2 Cammy I'm reminded when she made me feel funny as a kid ^^
That's fascinating. I see why this game has captured people's minds even two and a half decades later.
His name is actually pronounce Reeyou its a Japanese name however you called him Raiyou anyways it doesnt matter its just his name so its nothing at all
He's saying the name as it is localized in the language his country speaks. Actually learn Japanese and see that your name (unless it's Japanese) actually sounds different in Japanese. Pronunciation varies from language to language, even when there are name equivalents.
Wasn't Cammy a secret character in the Saturn version of Alpha 2? Kinda wished she could get some shine in Alpha 2 if that were the case.
Interesting but can't get over the Raiyu pronunciation, at least not with the frequency it's said
Love Raging Demon. Used to use it for Akuma, Shin Akuma and Evil Ryu in Alpha 3's World Tour mode.
It physically hurts me every time he pronounces Ryu the wrong way
Well, he'll use that kinda same excuse like "Oh, I'm not a filthy weeb!"
@@araisannanoda3688 it's not even a weeb thing it's a fighting game thing
@@JusticeAngel yea
The Valle CC is not the Blowback unblockable. As far as I know *that* was known already. The Valle CC is that even if people are OUTSIDE of the blowback range and they are not already crouch blocking on the frame you activate CC, they cannot block the low that comes out after. Thus you can even unblockable at at full sweep range.
