Secretariat did this all by himself. Ron didn’t touch him or fight him. He just let him run. And Secretariat pressed the gas and was basically like, “SEE YA SUCKERS! EAT MY DUST!” And he went full speed ahead, shocking everyone. The average horse can reach 40-45 mph in just two in a half seconds. Secretariat, went well over that, he went around 50MPH! That’s insane! And Ron never tapped him with the whip or any of that, he just ran! He ran like the wind! He just was along for the ride, he turned his head at the final stretch to see what all the commotion was and it scared him to see how far up in front he was. And Lucien was like, “Oh my g*d Ronnie don’t fall off!” It was insane! I wish I could’ve seen it in person, but I was born in 2007. But whenever I watch this race, my jaw drops to the floor. After all the times I’ve watched it, my jaw falls to the floor and tears are brought to my eyes because it’s just incredible to watch this amazing horse run like that. Secretariat loved to run, he loved it. Fifty years later, it’s still standing and I believe that this record is gonna stand forever. Maybe his Derby and Preakness records will be beat (highly doubt it) but his Belmont, oh hell no! That will never be beaten! Secretariat was the horse that God built.
He didn't run 50, he was just able to maintain his top speed full out run at about 42mph for a very long time. Huge difference. Great horses can only maintain it for over 600 yards. He maintained his top speed in this race longer than any other horse at the distance. His gas tank was bottomless. He never slowed down, he ran each quarter faster than the last through the whole race.
I think that's why his races are so enjoyable to watch. Ronnie didn't have to be whipping him like he's killing him. He was smart enough to know what to do on his own. Horse racing at it's purest.
Amen
What makes Ronnie a great jockey is that he knew and trust secretariat enough to get out his way and let him run his race his way!
Yes!!
With each passing year the legend grows. A masterpiece in our lifetime.
He was a TREMENDOUS MACHINE ❤
That horse WAS a machine...poetry in motion...yes, arguably the greatest, but he still owns all 3 triple crown track records...
Secretariat was legitimate… he beat sham and sham would’ve won the triple crown most any other year. Sham may still have the 2nd fastest derby time ever?
@N.S.56
Yea, but Man O War ran with steel shoes, much heavier weight, and much more often.
Sadly, we will never know which was the "better" horse.
Recency bias and a lack of understanding of how racing worked in the early 1900s always sees Secretariat touted as the greatest.
That said, for me, the original " Big Red," Man O War, is the greatest.
@@N.S.56 I felt for Sham, but I suspect he loved and admired his buddy Secretariat, and thought well, if anyone's gonna beat me, let it be Big Red. ❤
@@Steven-mk4ggthe amount MoW raced and the track surfaces are a bigger factor than the shoes but I do agree with you - the conditions are so different that it’s really not comparable. Honestly I think Secretariat wins the Belmont under all the same conditions against MoW but it would be some race to see. It’s like trying to compare runners in the Belmont today to Secretariat. Nobody is going to break those records and it’s really got nothing to do with how fast the horse could run, it has to do with how slow the track surfaces are today compared to the 60’s and 70’s.
@@rickbateman2401
Great take. I agree100%.
Brilliant piece of workmanship Ron. Thanks for the shivers.
Kudos to you, Ron, for knowing the horse and when to let him go. You get a lot of credit.
Ron was the absolute best jockey for Secretariat
I cry like a baby every time I see him run😅
What's amazing about this race and Secretariet, is that he ran the mile and a quarter in faster time than he did in the Kentucky Derby. He kept accelerating and I believe he would have had a faster time than 2:24 if he had been hustled full throttle in that last 16th. He had evened out just before the finish line, though, not running as hard as he had leaving the backstretch. You can see it and compare his stride to that when he was on the far turn. Amazing race and I saw it on live TV at Sears where I worked. I risked losing my job just to watch the race where they sold TVs. Every television on that floor was tuned to the Belmont Stakes. The roar and cheers from everyone there still resonates. 🎉
Every time I watch Secretariat, tears stream
from my eyes❤️❤️❤️ Love you "BIG RED"
Keep Running in the heavens forever ❤️❤️❤️!
I cry, too. I have never seen such a powerful, humble, kind, gorgeous horse like Secretariat. If he was human, he'd be an Adonis!
The best part of this race was when Chic Anderson said “it’s almost a match race”, right at the time Secretariat decided it was going to be a beat down.
👏💖
This great jockey got blazed along.
To ride one of god's best, go ronnie!!
This magnificent event tears me up every time I view it. Truly, a glimpse of God's perfection.
Same here
Yes, he was the greatest horse of all time. ❤❤
@@BreathtolivePhar Lap too is looked at at as a Legend. I'm in UK and we love our racing these two horses are 2 of the best that ever raced
@@suemaher5282wrong You need to realise american horse racing is corrupt. You also need to read up on horses further back. Look at Pretty Polly, TV wasn't around then.
@@barbaradyson6951Barbara I wasn't around to see these race so everything I know about them was from reading or watching in Secretariat case looking at him racing too. I'm well aware of American racing being as u say corrupt. I'd worry more about the drugs in their racing. Secretariat was a great horse and no testing in those days so guess work on suggesting he wasn't the best American horse in the last 50 yrs. I respect your opinions so please don't patronise me. We all see racing differently that's why we love it.
I'm still in awe of this win! ❤️❤️❤️
Secretariat winning the Belmont by 31 lengths and the Triple Crown is a race I don’t think anyone will beat. That record will stand forever.🏇
Perfection at its finest!!! All 3 triple crown wins were track records.
Secretariat, Penny Tweedy, Lucien Laurin, Ron Turcotte❤❤❤ DREAM TEAM!!! They will never be outdone in our lifetimes or the next!!!
And the GROOMER ❤ Eddie Sweat !!! He gets a lot of praise for taking good care of the greatest horse EVER !!!!
Secretariat had a big heart literally. Most hearts of race horses were 8-10 pounds. Secretariats heart was estimated to be around 22 lbs naturally. A beautiful horse that loved to run.
When I watched him at post time, during the derby, I took one look at him and told my husband he's going to win the triple crown. I was convinced! He did. He looked huge, magnificent confirmation and had a look in his eye that old me he was boss.
This race changed my life....
It's weird how this magnificent horse, the one and only Secretariat, makes me want to be a better person, and quite honestly I've strived towards that. Random kindness, understanding, accepting. More to go, but it takes a lifetime. ❤
Beautiful Secretariat looked liked he had smoke coming from him as he crossed the finish line!!😂
I watched this race live on TV. It was amazing and still is!
He was still gaining speed in the last turn, unreal
I got GOOSEBUMPS while watching this....
Thanks you Ronnie!❤
I cry like a baby every time I see him run. This beautiful boy truly was the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time.)
I watched the movie at least a dozen times and I still get goose bumps seeing his
Ronnie Turcotte rode Pegasus that day. This victory inspires me so much…i have a Turcotte autographed photo from that iconic moment in my study
Beyond a great athlete this horse truly was the greatest athlete of alltime sorry Tom Brady ❤
28-3 says it it is Mr. TOM Brady WHO Orchestra ted the greatest comebacksince Lazarus (FALCONS FANS , HIDE)
@@TitanicHorseRacingLover Brady never went undefeated… ooops says Eli Manning … secretariat did he’s the goat says Eli and me
@brianl.1967 secretariat never went undefeated either. Secretariat finished out of the money in the Wood Memorial before the Derby, causing a lot of idiots in the media to doubt him. SMFH. If Zenyatta had defeated Blame she would not be the G.O.A.T of horse racing, either. Secretariat lost to horses who were not as good as he was. To unfairly compare a horse to a human just to to try to discredit Brady because you don't like him is mind bending and dishonest.
@@brianl.1967 Seattle Slew was the only 3YO in history to win the Triple Crown UNDEFEATED. Going undefeated is so overrated, IMO.
@brianl.1967 Man O'War is the G.O.A.T with his 20 out of 21 starts and his 100 length victory in the Laurence realization stakes and he he carried 138 pounds several times against 3YO Colts and older horses.
Great job Ronnie I loved watching you both race
El aver vivido este gran acontecimiento entre más pasa el tiempo se mira difícil de igualar, se emociona uno con esta hazaña, 13 año tenia yo,gracias a Dios por esta vida
In my opinion the best race horse of all time! The 1938 race between SB vs WA was incredible but what Secretariat did in 1973 was absolutely breath taking‼️
When you name the DreamTeam - Secretariat , Penny C. Tweedy, Trainer L.Lauren, Jockey R.Turcotte , please don’t forget that stable GROOMER Eddie Sweat !!! Who took care of this horse with TLC and knew Secretariats habits and moods !!!!
Ron!!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Secretariat was a gift from God. We just couldn't see his wings.
Secretariat accelerated every quarter mile of the Triple Crown! He had a 22-pound heart in perfect condition. Turns out Sham had a 17-pound heart and probably would have won the TC if it weren’t for Secretariat and sustaining a leg fracture in this race.
Secretariat was perfection and Ron Turcotte was the perfect jockey. I’m so sorry that he had a tragic accident that paralyzed him. He seems so humble and kind.
Por mucho...... pero por mucho la mejor y más grande victoria jamás vista y por haber con Secretariat en Belmont Stakes, inmortal el momento y todo la gente y su felicidad 😊................
Again I must say the greatest victory in any sport by far….31 lengths unheard of WOW❤
There's not a horse, living or dead, that could have beat him that day in the Belmont!
Everyone talks about Secretariat (who I love) but imagine being one of the other riders in the back, watching helplessly as he kept getting further and further away. And poor Sham too. He was the closest to Secretariat with a big heart too, but very abused by the rider. This race broke his spirit, poor thing.
Yeah...I feel sorry for Sham but I'm happy the horse that wasn't getting whipped won...It says a lot about the sport and what can be improved about it.
l was 10yrs old when this race happened!!! l picked Sham in all 3 races and my brother picked Secretariat!!! Unfortunately l picked the wrong horse!!! Sham would have won any other yr!!! But Secretariat was the best horse to ever be born!!! Legend!!! Best race l ever watched!!!
I agree!
Anytime I say erase secretarit I tear up...
Magnificent horse..
On a my list of Greatest Athletes, Secretariat would be in front of Tiger and MJ.
Historical ❤❤❤
I still get tears!
😍
Close second- Chataqua in his 3rd TJ Smith
Won 31.lengths n tracked record time Awesome horse could probably d.Goat in thoroughbred..❤❤❤
31 lengths 👏👏👏👏👏👏❤💯
Whilst Secretariat was absolutely wonderful, I have to say that the GREATEST horse race ever seen will always be, what the MAGNIFICENT FRANKEL done in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket was simply sensational, 15 lengths clear at the halfway stage against group 1 winners as he came home in a canter, the same thing happened at Royal Ascot in the Queen Ann witnessed by the Queen he sluiced home by 11 lengths without being asked a question, he eventually retired unbeaten in 14 races, to become the highest rated horse in the history of flat racing never to be beaten,
I ❤ horse
The 105th Belmont Stakes was the greatest performance of all time.
#ILoveSecretatiat
Can you imagine what the records would be for the other races if Ronnie let him run
I try and imagine what it must have felt like to ride Secretariat and feel his power underneath you.
When they did an MRI on big red after he passed they soon found out his secret...an average Thoroughbreds heart weighs about 12 pounds and big Reds weighed over 21 pounds...so at speed big red could create twice as much oxygen than every other horse in the race...they all knew he had a big heart just from his personality and the way he played up to the cameras..but big red was just a superior athlete in a class all of his own ...🐎🐎🐎
I still get choked up
Secretariat is a GOAT
👍🏼❤
never will be equaled in the future. 31 lengths. seemingly impossible.
There are not many horses that become Legends and are known worldwide. Secretariat is known worldwide. The undisputed Champion.
Secretariat the greatest and yet some want to match Man O War with him my oh my
At a time when US racing had a very suspect drug history, this performance will ways be marred by the likelihood that Sec was on PED's.
Just watched again and had to wipe the tears away again. Cant help it.
I have tears watching this... God bless this beautiful horse secateriate I hope I spelled his name right..❤❤❤❤❤❤
