Having been the victim of false allegations by women on two occasions I already minimized my interactions with them in the workplace before the MeToo thing ever started.

Don’t talk to women in the office 1:1, don’t meet outside the office 1:1. Never comment on appearance, family, or anything outside of work. Keep it strictly business only, and there isn’t any space to get me too’d. It’s just not worth the risk.

That's a real issue. I'm a girl and I went to an all girls school. There were many false accusation against male teachers, who as a consequence lost their jobs, even when proofed as innocent. And I pitied the teachers, because I was friends with some of the accusers and knew there was nothing behind their talk. They only wanted attention and knew they would get away with it as long as it's like a rumour.
I was there at the time when "he stared at her breasts" ... and no he didn't, because there was nothing to look at.

It's not that men are scared of false allegations, it's that they're scared of exaggerated allegations that ruin their career. For example what happened with aziz Ansari, or garrison keilor.
I think many are scared of getting called out on the stuff they really do and say. Because they never have been. And they never had to learn where the lines are.
Look from what I gather Aziz's thing was a communication problem more than anything else. Also, I think he was or is on tour. His career is hardly over.
People aren't dumb. We know when something is harassment when it's not.
Ansari's case was a problem caused by not him but a bigger underlying thing because of which the woman felt she couldn't say no. It's not his fault but it's also not OK.

Yeah except that is an unfounded idea and rarely if ever occurs. In fact a US study in 2010 found anywhere from 2-10% of rape allegations being false and in that only 8% of those fake accusations led to arrests of the false accuser which means they were definitionally made up whole-cloth.

I like how they try to "make light" of the actual problem of false reporting. A serious life destroying, career ending thing that WILL happen to a man if a women says anything against them.... even without proof. I once commented to a female coworker that her earrings were interesting (or nice). She got this uncomfortable look on her face as though I was being inappropriate. I made the comment because the earrings looked like Christmas earrings (it was around Christmastime) and that seemed neat. Boundaries and respecting boundaries are different from women to women. It's hard for a man to where those boundaries lie. I am finding it is better to be safe and never interact with female coworkers beyond work related tasks.
I think it's important to establish a relationship with female coworkers first so comments like that can be made comfortably. Some random dudes come to me at the gym during a workout and make comments like "You look good" and like, nice stuff which is great but it makes me a little bit uncomfortable because I don't know them. Even if they're just saying it to encourage me, I presume the worst (i really just don't know them). You should understand that women have faced violence/scorn/anger from men for small things like refusing a date, not smiling enough, or stuff like that. We're killed for saying "no". I know not all men are like that, but enough are to make it a problem. So when men I don't know approach me, a part of me instinctually feels uneasy (Many women may feel the same way). For coworker relationships, I feel fine with male coworkers because we're established a relationship through working together. so comments about my outfit or shoes are welcome and nice. It's coming from someone I know and trust and the basis of context is respect. A comment like that from someone I don't know could be misinterpreted as someone hitting on me or something. Maybe it would be a good idea to get to know more about your female coworkers through those work related tasks!

Alan I don‘t think you overstepped a line by doing that. Many people find it hard to take a compliment and may seem uncomfortable when they get one for that very reason. I know that I am like that. But that doesn’t mean that I feel harassed when I get one. It could be the same with your co-worker. I think that if you are empathetic enough to feel how you made her uncomfortable with a simple compliment like that, you already have the tools to realize when you might have „gone too far“ in a more sexual context and would know where to draw the line. That being said, you never know what a person might have experienced in the past to make them react like that. But that isn’t necessarily your fault because, as I said, you could always accidentally say something that might hurt another person due to their past.

You're totally right, blanket characterising an entire subset of the human population over shitty personal experiences with some of a group is going too far. I was trying to give a lil insight into why the coworker might've reacted the way she did. The OP mentioned women react differently and it's mainly context I think? Like if the coworker and OP knew each other on a friend-level, a compliment like that would be well received. If it's the first time and she doesn't know him and it comes seemingly out of nowhere, it could be uncomfortable. I hope the OP doesn't cut off trying to talk to women forever and can try different approaches on an understanding of why women may not receive his advances well. I've been hit on my guys that made me uncomfortable (I was in vulnerable places/situations) and just like how guys like the OP may not know boundaries, I too didn't know if it was a harmless and nice comment or like, are they going to do something to me if I don't act the way they want? My first reaction is always a "thank you" and if it goes to places I don't want it, I'll step back. The "be nice" first, where you assume everyone is good, has worked well for me. @vashisth sharma the sentence 99.999 percentage of men won't do anything is absolutely bogus. The percentage of false rape allegations is somewhere between 2% to 5%. The probability of a woman getting raped is somewhere between 45% to 60%( depending on where you are from). The odds are proportionally different. So when a woman claims that she was raped the odds are she probably was. And the thing you said about court trials always being in favour of the victim, nothing could be farther from the truth. Most of rapists go unpunished, even when they are convicted the prison sentence ( if any) is short. Only in some cases do the victims get proper justice and the rapist gets proper sentencing. If you think that false allegations are more of a problem than rape then you are a deluded misogynist.

In the workplace we had a abbreviation called CYA. Cover your ass. No need to be alone with a girl in an office with the door closed? Keep it open. That’s not harassment that’s just being smart. Be in public places and don’t allow for potential allegations to arise. People want to pretend these allegations don’t happen. They are free to do so. In the meantime I’m just going to cover my ass, just in case.
I work as a merchant marine on ships carrying goods provided to America (container ships)... In my 10 year experience working on vessels at sea, whenever there was a woman onboard there was always someone quitting or getting fired. It always created problems. That’s just the way it is...

What it’s doing is displaying men’s reactions to women gaining dignity and support as foolish and unnecessary. It isn’t down playing people who are actually falsely accused.
I can't think of another situation where people would express fear and be ridiculed rather than heard. People, including women, make false claims. It happens. It's happened to people I know. It's happened to me. I was able to prove my innocence, but if I couldn't have I'd of lost my job, guilty until proven innocent. My friend went through Hell and came out a changed, broken man. There are still people out there who think the difference between flirting and harassment is how attractive the person is. So yeah, I can understand being cautious or even afraid.

@@ballsislife6018 I definitely have PTSD from the whole ordeal. There are bad men and women. There are far too many men that sexually harass women, but there are also some women willing to lie in hopes of a million dollar payout. Many law firms will represent the accusers on contingency. So the lawyer will only be paid if the accuser is paid. The accused will have to pay a lawyer $350+/hr to defend themselves. So if you want to defend yourself get ready to pay $100k+ in hopes that the judge will rule in their favor. My lawyer told me that 95% of sexual harassment cases end in a settlement BEFORE trial. Sexual harassment claims are a slam dunk for lawyers and the accusers. The lawyers don't care if the accusations are false or not. They just care about getting paid. I learned that first hand.
I don't know what the answer is, but I do know that suggesting women never falsely accuse men is preposterous.

Joking aside I do understand why men would be scared of false claims. I worked with women who tried to argue that if a guy says "She looks nice in that dress" (in a completely causal way). Then they should be fired because of sexual harassment. Not saying that we shouldn't have women in the work place we absolutely should, but I do understand fears that they have. I don't fully agree with them but i do understand them.

You probably also heard about many cases of female teachers sexually harrasing young male students. Many documented cases and statistics show that in majority of those female teachers are English teachers. Guess what? I am an English teacher in my early thirties. I am not paranoid of being accused of sexual harrasement despite so many cases being shown on the news. Why? Well, I don't sexually harrass, duh.
I can understand your thinking, because it will happen eventually, just by the law of averages. But if you extend that out to its logical conclusion, then women would never even leave the house, considering around 80% of women have been sexually harassed at work alone, and nearly 30% of women have been seriously sexually assaulted or raped in their lifetime. That means women are tougher or more practical or less baselessly paranoid than the men(or more men are guilty). Maybe all of the aforementioned. Your can decide which.

We cannot deny that there were, there are and will be predatory men around that will harass and assault women. But denying that there are 0 men loosing jobs and that only 2% are actually false accusations isn't exactly solving any problem either. Men are increasingly avoiding women altogether is because of the absence of proper due process in case a false allegation is levelled. The mainstream fails to see that a proper due process is the atual answer to #meetoo and this problem of avoiding women in workplace.

Actually happened to me four times And threats to file charges of false accusations of sexual harassment.
It happened to me once, as well as 3 of my friends. No charges, just character assassinations.

Yah. As a man, I'm far more cautious when I'm around women in public. I'm a servant of Christ, and this doesn't really apply at church. But, other than that, the most opportunity I have to interact with women is on a college campus. As far as I'm concerned, I'm avoiding contact if I can help it. Also, I don't particularly care to spend time with much of my generation anyway. So, this isn't all that exceptional for me.

It's a good story but. I don't know why, when hearing about women abusing men, she would need to dismiss it as not real. Even if that guy was making it overblown and probably being dismissive himself of women's experiences, and female-on-male harassment/assault is not as common, it does happen. And people dismiss male victims. As a woman who's seen abuse from both male and female perpetrators, I am disturbed to hear any instance of dismissal or belittling of people's experiences. Charges aren't dropped, they are suspended until the evidence is available and since most men don't care if a rape victim gets justice, then those kits are not a priority for law enforcement. For every false accusation you bring forth, I can bring forward 100 cases of women being raped where there was DNA evidence and witness evidence and other physical evidence and the man or men were never charged. And I can bring 10 where the men were charged and convicted, but received sentences so laughably light that people have stayed in jail longer for unpaid traffic tickets.But, you are the type of person that thinks that every website, including government websites, are lying about how many men are actually accused when they are innocent. Some basic rules for men (or women) who have trouble knowing where "the line" is:
1. If you are talking about your genitalia or anyone's genitalia during the work day or in a business situation, and you are not specifically a medical specialist in that area, then you are over the line. Exceptions can be made if you are speaking to an EMT about where all that blood is coming from.
2. No woman's bust size or menstrual cycle is any of your business and remarking on either is WAY over the line, no matter what you were going to say.
3. If you are putting your hand on another business associate for any purpose other than shaking hands, a pat on the back, or to keep them from falling or otherwise being harmed, then you are over the line. Exceptions can be made for plucking bugs off of people, but tell them you're going to first.
4. If you are telling a joke that you would not tell to your Mother, or a religious icon such as a Nun, during the work day or in a business situation then you are over the line.
5. If you are exposing any part of your body that is not generally exposed while dressed in business or business casual attire, (or your uniform or whatever attire is considered acceptable by your employer) and you are not in the restroom, then you are over the line.
6. If you are suggesting to a colleague any act, trip, occupation, position, item to ingest, or purpose that one would not ordinarily suggest to one's mother or religious icon such as a Nun, then you are over the line.
These basic rules will usually help prevent you from stepping over the line. In general, being a decent human being with consideration for the feelings of others and a willingness to apologize when you make a mistake will add greatly to the likelihood that you will never suffer from accusations of sexual harassment - or any harassment, for that matter. No one is more angry with any woman who makes a false accusation of sexual harassment than other women. Brian, growing up to be a nice, courteous man with good ethics is the best defense against false accusation. Being respectful of women at work and in any professional encounter - and for that matter in general - will help a lot, too. If you ask politely, and are willing to take no for an answer if it comes to that, (and don't follow them into the restroom to do so) then you'll be fine. I'm only a single guy in the situation with ~7.5 yrs at 3 investment banks. I noticed that women who were assertive were not promoted as often as men who were assertive if not aggressive. I thankfully didn't see harassment of women by others, although there was a lot of complaining among the guys comprising 70-90% of many teams about really tiny details about women's behavior/character that wouldn't as often apply to men. That being said, a lot of this in the sales/front office was relating to context and opportunities to develop a closer working relationship:having male-centric outings and going out for lunches with "the guys," various ways to extend the Greek societies that many of the guys were part of. What made it more pronounced was the fact that women in sales and front office were hired often based on appearance (and were considered very good-looking) and so there was little that connected these aggressive, sports-centric frat brothers with their female counterparts, aside from nascent sexual tension. What probably made it most difficult was that the promotion process, even at the best institutions, was often so subjective and opaque, that some women who didn't look the part or hang out with the right group might not be promoted despite being very competent.
I'm just not sure how I feel about this, when I was 27 I lost my minimum wage dish-washing job because they hired a woman who was simply uncomfortable closing down the store with a male present... I'm gay, she knew that. So while I agree on some points, its not unheard of for women to get men fired for being men, but overkill is overkill so, again I'm not sure where I sit on this issue, to this day I'm terrified of women in the workplace. yeh, I've lost 3 jobs from women managers who basically stalked me around the store my entire shifts, told me I couldn't wear my hoodie on breaks and lunches, constantly made drama and issues out of nothing, changed my schedule weekly, disobeyed seniority, and pretty much denied basic human rights until I either quit or was fired. I was always taught to stand up for myself, whenever you stand up for yourself to a woman manager they tend to feel threatened and fire. I was a victim of an allegation while I was a Paramedic supervisor. I was married, my wife worked there as a paramedic and I avoided ALL CONTACT with female employees unless a witness was present, and STILL got an allegation from someone who was being investigated for sleeping with a different married supervisor on company property during company time.
I got a job as an offshore medic, I actually replaced a female medic. That was the only one our company had at the time. I became supervisor 1 year later and I made sure we never hired another woman.

M D Adams Wow do you actually believe that people listen to women, or that women even report these things? 81% is a high enough number that it’s just normalised, it’s something all women face and deal with, and no matter how uncomfortable they don’t report it, because it won’t lead to an actual conviction anyway. Most rapes aren’t even reported, and that’s due to a multitude of reasons. For example, most rapes are committed by people who already know the victims, leading to the victims not being comfortable reporting them to the police. Also, most police don’t know what to do with a rape allegation, and retraumatise the victims by asking how they were clothed, and if they didn’t actually enjoy it.
I know rape can seem far removed from just plain sexual harassment , and you’ve maybe even stopped reading this, but sexual harassment contributes to the general culture that people always want it, and that it’s nothing to complain about, especially because no one is complaining about it.
TL;DR, this is a complicated issue, and there are several reasons that women don’t report, or if they do, they don’t get heard.

I really think the thinking is simple. Whether or not a guy in wall street is harassing a girl, a pissed off girl/a girl hired by an envious colleague could make some allegations that could cost someone their career or substantial amount of money by the time the dust settles.

As always, the Daily Show is oversimplifying an issue to paint men as bad and women as good. The reason wall street is shying away from continuing to socialize with women is due to how many reports for sexual harassment there are. It is more likely that a large portion of the reports are lies for attention than men suddenly all becoming harassers. If I can't be sure that my female coworkers will interpret a "hello" or a conversation starter in the break room as an attempt to take advantage of them physically, then I just wont talk to them. The risk of a false accusation ruining your life is simply too high. Meanwhile, women that fire those false accusations never suffer any negative repercussions. Therefore, the cost-benefit comparison encourages women to use false accusations whenever they can, and men to retreat away from any and all interactions with women. This isn't a big puzzle to uncover. Any human being with basic reasoning skills can see what's happening. I suppose the Daily Show correspondents, writers, and host cannot be included in that crowd.

I agree with the men.. If all my actions with someone are so crucially judged, I would just cease with the interaction. NOT saying there were no problems to be addressed but I think this shit is out of hand and any accusation ruins U these days. False accusations happen, but they aren’t happening nearly as much as ACTUAL sexual harassment, if you don’t know how to interact with a woman based on the fear that you might say even the slightest thing to offend her... then maybe YOU have a problem.
