sirgarberto No, but I can do my best. All I'm doing is giving advice. No-one has to take that advice, but given that xkcd is very nerd-oriented, I would assume people who read xkcd tend to be rational, at a good number of them will take my advice.
one you can try but perhaps every evening it would disturb their mating. This is slavery, they call it slave to the beat, or vibration, many things can be enslaved by same method.
I don't get why this works (I tried to implement it myself, my fireflies do not synchronize). For instance, if we set a huge radius, so that every firefly is knudging all the others, suppose they are 10 fireflies, each time one lights, knudges all the others. That means that every firefly will get 9 knudges per cycle. If a knudge pushes the clock 0.01s, it means all clocks would run 0.09s faster per cycle. That will not produce any synchronization. What is the flaw in this reasoning?
yeah! looks like ncase meets xkcd... perhaps wbw will soon join... and eventually even a basiux. anyway, highly recommended indeed: ncase.me/fireflies/
hi, i have some info on my website robinmeier.net/?p=2279 there's also a science show that commented on it: ua-cam.com/video/RiKRzcQGDcw/v-deo.html Are you interested in reproducing this?
OK so you have used a simple LED switching at regular time intervals. Then fireflies - for their own specie nature - naturally synchronize to the LED rhythm. Is that right? I'm not interested in reproducing but wanted to understand if you used a particular algorithm based on any mathematical model. Anyway, really cool video 👍
for synchronizing the fireflies its best to stimulate them with a regular signal. however, i've been experimenting with algorithms that simulate the fireflies' natural synchronization. look for a publication by steven strogatz and mirollo. they have a nice model of coupled oscillators which will look a lot like firefly synchronization as observed in nature
Xkcd brought me here! It's a community thing, to leave a comment. Here's a cool chart about firefly light patterns: legacy.mos.org/fireflywatch/images/MOS_FFW_Firefly_Flash_Chart.pdf
personally i think its awfully heavy handed and imagine how freaked out the fireflies would be. if it were a human experiment this would be considered unethical. and i am not even remotely into animal rights. i guess fireflies are special to me and i dont like people just screaming violent signals at them.
(?) You have to be aware that you are assuming what these creatures feel . Can you tell if they re in distress or in a state of pleasure? Also you have to keep in mind that it s insects that we re talking about here and that humans ,such as yourself , have a tendency to anthropomorphize other creatures that may or may not be capable of feeling what you would think they are.
@@theali8oras274 thanks for your reply. I think what I really meant was I that I wondered if I insects particularly fireflies have insect-physiological reaction to flashing lights. A lab experiment might explain that, but I could not find a paper on it. Using the word freaking out there was incorrect - but sometimes I say "my phone/computer is freaking out" when it malfunctions/glitch out without it having feelings of course. Along the same line I also wonder how repeated artificial flashing would affect the fireflies behaviour, such as changing their flight pattern to a new (confused) pattern, affect their ability to mate etc. Again this could be answered in a controlled experiment. I just was disturbed by the amount of flashing lights. I can't distinguish real fireflies from flashing lights at all. It's hard to appreciate it. A little note, locals in Thailand where a lot of fireflies used to be did have signed put up, please no camera flash to protect fireflies. But because there's none now I can't really tell if they do disappear when people use flashes.
"if it were a human experiment this would be considered unethical." I think the human equivalent would be getting a crowd to do the wave while walking to work. Or maybe getting other cars to honk a song with you during a traffic jam when people think honking will help somehow.
@@FlyingDominion makes sense if it's just their communication system. I like the honking example but it's like forcing people to honk in traffic by playing really loud honking sound in their face - not necessary a song because there are requirements of structure legible or familiar to fireflies I doubt the humans know. Anyway I would feel so pissed and might go instead if I hear honks like that. But I felt like it was more because the way they read it and write their messages are like wired to their biological/physiological function - like arousal or simulation that would make my muscles move a certain way, make me feel a certain emotion etc. IDK it's very invasive in my opinion!
Fireflies: got DAMN ITS WILD OUT HERE these new guys, they're weird, i cant get them to talk, and they dont have bodies, but MAN DO THEY BLINK

Your footage is better than what CBS could capture. Nice work!

i was listening to justice - let there be light, and it damn near exactly matches the fireflies
the sound and music is hypnotic
pure physics, vibrations synchronizing. Good music too : )
👀 my god it's like a lightening bug rave...nature at it's finest ❤️
I suppose this is the trickle before the flood.
This is pure gold
I find the one dislike weird. Did some member of PETA find this and get mad that someone would do this to the fireflies?
Pretty cool video though.
Perhaps the odd music made it receive a dislike. Who knows :-/
there's 10 now, he brought friends.
one you can try but perhaps every evening it would disturb their mating. This is slavery, they call it slave to the beat, or vibration, many things can be enslaved by same method.
What do you mean? They didn't do anything to the fireflies.
Why would PETA get mad about someone filming fireflies...?
