The new War Thunder update finally added a dedicated artillery vehicle to the US tech tree with the M109A1 SPH. I didn't think it'd be good, but it's actually a lot of fun. Some people think it's too much fun, somehow.

I’ve seen German and American mains complain about the leopard 40/70 being OP as well. Despite it being worse and a Higher BR than the AMX and lvkv with better survivability and the same gun

@@nikoclesceri2267 I have seen nearly every countries main complain about it because they shoot the hull instead of trying to aim or shoot the turret with mgs it's just trash players not specific country mains that are complaining btw i am American main
3:47 - fun fact: when the wreck swaps like that, it retains the hitbox of what you actually killed. Recently I killed a Maus, it swapped for a Puma, so me and an enemy ended up shooting an invisible hitbox a couple of times (I was hiding behind the wreck).

Attempt number 5 (I think) of getting Spookston to play any tank with a dozer blade, the catch is that he has to dig himself in before engaging targets. Movement around the map is allowed but he has to dig himself in again before engaging.

I used to serve on a variant of this. It was a m109A3GN. Over 20 years ago. I really appreciate it getting into the game :)

@UNPSC-0 It actually gets better, and kinda sad. The same m109 I served on got sent to Ukraine. And I believe you can find a clip of it burning in an Ukrainian field somewhere. It was called "Blodøks" or "Bloodaxe" in english.

The M109 is... its fun but not busted. DEFINITELY not busted. At least in a good way. I personally carry 16 shells. 2 PF and 14 basic HE. Its a fun vehicle, but definitely a glass cannon
I honestly had the *worst* luck when I started playing it. Stuck it in my 6.7 lineup, and I swear regardless of how I played or where I went, there was some form of vehicle there to absolutely annihilate me. I don’t think I’ve ever had APHE rounds not do significant damage or one shot me the whole time. And I’ve only carried ~15 rounds max.
But, the few games I did have some decent luck, I definitely am glad of my anticipation for this thing to *FINALLY* make it’s appearance
@@justat1149 I have it in my 8.0 lineup (US main) and it's GREAT. To give you and advantage, try playing tank destroyers at low to mid tier to train yourself on distance guaging.

I had no problems with distance. I just had the horrible idea of playing one of the most popular BR brackets the same day an update dropped 😂
Personally I've found it survivable, I've not been one shot yet, most deaths come from bombs. I even started taking full ammo and it's not detonated at all, the cannon breach tanks many of your hits or they'll either only get one side of your turret. Fought many a battle with only 2 crew till the end.
You know what's funny is that more often then you think the 109's absolute chonker of a barrel acts as your armor
I wouldn't worry too much about the number of shells in the M109. No matter what, you've got a giant ready rack in the left side of the turret. Additional shells and charges will be stored in the hull sides, basically alternating, so you can't get either side to be empty.
Yeah with glass cannon vehicles it’s practically pointless to try to not become a space program ☠️ in my m-51 I just carry full ammunition no matter what people say because basically anything can pen me including AA and anything can practically 1 shot me

its really fun, used it a lot while grinding reserve tanks to 6.7 for the maus (i missed the cutoff by 3 hours and did not get the maus)
Might be for the best unless you really like playing reallllyyyy slow.
Always next year buddy, although real talk the Maus is fun but it's not revolutionary. It loses it's luster after a while, although it's still a very good tank despite what people want to say.
That’s why I spent a week or 2 grinding to rank 5 so I didn’t miss the cutoff sad that you missed it tho :(
JagdPanther turning into a Stumtiger is the craziest thing i ever saw
It uses the same round as the T30 American heavy event vehicle. The m107 round used to be 1:1 TNT, so iirc, 51mm of pen. Now that these new SPG's are added, the explosive filler changed to Composition B, which gives us the new 60mm pen, which is just enough to go through the roof of the maus, if you can hit the little periscope thingy, results in a 1 tap. very nice.

Spook, you gotta try out the Leopard 40/70 next. It was the most fun I've had in a tank in a long time. People have no idea they can just spray it to death with MGs, and they're calling it overpowered because they just shoot the hull, get shocked when it does nothing. If you get a good flank going, you can annihilate an entire team.
With how much of a meme it is, you've got to do a video on the TOG II.

I have the G variant in the German tree, HE slingers are always fun, plus it’s a good change of pace for the German 6.0 lineup

Attempt uh, 3? 4? idk of requesting some rounds in Ground SB, where CAS is (usually) way less annoying and gremlin gameplay is the default. Just make sure you bind "request location of allies" to something like your rangefinder to help avoid teamkills :>
Almost got the US M109 been grinding it while doing the Tog event only 3k rp left.
But there's nothing more satisfying than slinging giant explosive at people's vehicles to get that kill *BING* sound! Especially fun when Spookston plays these!
Also recommendations: Strv103 (both are fun, I would say the A is a bit better for it's BR), Pbv 302 (Nlaw carrier at 8.7 with a 20mm for a bit extra help) and strv m/38 (110mm pen with 4 sec base reload at 1.0).
i think that quite honestly the M109A1 might have been the greatest addition to the us tree since i started playing the game

This is in the same boat as the 2s1, but with less overall armor, gun travel area (the gun depression, elevation, and azimuth combined) , mobility, AND fire rate... along with a more condensed crew placement relative to the ammunition and size of the vehicle (a smaller vehicle may be impossible to spread the crew out, but larger ones have more space to do it)
Attempt number 3 of getting spookston play to-55, its a very fun tank. And I would want to see a flamethrower kill :)

Loving it in the GB tree right along with my FV4005 😆 (Ratel 90 & Charioteer too) I've developed a sixth sense to being revenged CASd playing it (they still ate timed fuze), salty its got the Roundel, tho only because it's the the only tank in the whole tree to have one.
The Fv4005, M109A1 and the G6 make for a funny derp lineup. The G6 Is still busted good.

@@interpl6089 yup. Really durable Vs Solid shot, Sabot and HEAT-FS. People have to direct hit your ammo with them. Not to mention the Engine and middle of the tank will just eat shells. And because of the shear size people almost always shoot the hull first.

Would love to see an uncommon soviet tank destroyer get showcased, like the SU-100P. Great pen for br, only thing is it is open topped (day 77)
I have never loved any tank in war thunder like this one before, because it is so fun! I don't have to worry about my shell penetrating or not, just blast and say goodbye. I also carry full ammo because i have noticed when i get shot the 3 crewmen in the right side of the turret usually die and I never get ammo racked. Also, for a tank with such thin armor, I bounce more shells than I expected to.

I do feel they did a better job sound of the 8v71t in this than the one in the m41d while you can hear the supercharger the burbling is a bit too quiet in my opinion the 8v71 is known for the screaming supercharger and the loud burbles

The absolute freedom slinging refrigerator that is the M109 is a joy to be had for now. My first game in it I was on 38th Parallel and ran into a Jagdpanther and immediately turned him into a tinderbox. It’s a chonker of an arty gun and has less armor then a Sherman (probably idk) but it at least puts the German main’s in their place in some instances.

I've had a dead tank switch bodies before too!
The M109 is a 155mm self propelled howitzer and if the crew is very good at what they are doing , it could fire a round every 30 seconds or so. I crewed on an a3 variant in 82-84 at the Marine Corps Base of 29 Palms, Ca with the 1st/155mm HowBtry [sp] , 4th Bn, 11th Marines [reinforced]
It's the polar opposite to the usual playstyle, but would like to see spookston play the Tog II when it drops, it's size alone will have it be the largest bomb bait imagionable.

I really like this tank, specifically because i bought the xm-1 during its sale and put a talisman on the m109a1. Its perfectly capable of dispatching tanks in that BR and looks damn good doing it!

The m109 was put into service in 1963 and the 2s3m was put into service in 1971
