  • Taking notes is such a crucial part of both Nursing and Nurse Practitioner school! In this video I will share my tips for taking effective and efficient notes taken from your assigned nursing school/NP school readings as well as your in person lectures. I’ll share all that I have learned through 2 rounds of nursing school (crazy!). I have found that in Nurse Practitioner school especially, there was SO much reading, so finding a good strategy that works for you is key! I will also give you a few pointers on how to stay interested and engaged in your note taking, which will help you to return to your notes for reflection and studying later on down the line.

      I honest to god would not do this if it weren’t for the fact that there’s a good chance I probably won’t complete everything by myself due to multiple chapters on a learning guide

  • @paigesanders7311

    In nursing school I was not able to split up my readings. I always felt like something important would be missed and then ultimately that was my responsibility. I ended up just using the objectives to read the important information throughout the chapters.

    I remember things much easier by writing, but I write so slow so lectures kill me! I can type at the speed of light, but I tend to never look back at my typed notes and don't retain the information as well in comparison to writing my notes down...

      ever thought about audio recording your classes? I think you have to get the professor's permission or it's illegal in some places, but others it doesn't matter

    I just found your channel and I'm absolutely LOVING it! I'm hopefully starting the Nursing Program in the Fall of this year. I already took my pre-requisite classes and for the classes I usually record my teacher on my phone, and then go home and re-listen to lecture while typing notes on the computer and adding my own diagrams from google to help me understand. It did take a longer time because i'd re-listen to the whole lecture and then study my own notes after, but it was a great method to learn by re-reading my own diagrams and notes and also listening to my teacher's voice

    I just found your channel and I love it so much! I am a kinesthetic learner and slightly auditory. Before class I watch a UA-cam video on the topic. So in class I have a notebook for my “crappy lecture notes” where I just scribble key words or things that jump out and I feel are important (note- I don’t write a ton of info... just a header or topic). Then later I use that to comb through my textbook and learn more/ review material. I use class time to listen and comprehend and try to understand the concept. Which in turn makes reading the text book MUCH easier. It works for me 😊

    You are always so positive and so uplifting, I really appreciate your videos so much! Just started nursing school (back for a second degree at age 30), and let me tell you going back as an adult is a different ball game. Especially now with so much distance learning, I’m having to completely reconfigure and change the way I learn and take notes. It has been stressful to say the least.

    1. I'm a flashcard/notecard taker. I also have a long commute to school, so I make a notecard recording of my voice so I can study in the car. For example, I would record myself saying "list 3 antihypertensives" then pause (This is where I would answer myself in real time), and then answer the question on my recording. Such a time saver so I don't feel I'm wasting time on my commute. This is also an excellent way to learn those few concepts I've been struggling with on test day.
    2. I am a type A, but after I get to know my classmates, I would consider splitting up the note taking. I would preface it by saying, "Let's try it once and see if it's something that will work." Yes, I would check their work. And, yes, if their work isn't helpful to me I would need to be assertive and tell them it's not working (which would be difficult for me to to).

I spend my entire undergrad without the ability of taking such great notes on my ipad, so I have to learn how to do all of this stuff all over again. So, what better than to learn from Nurse Liz, the first and correct way. However, I need an iPen, and the Notability app. I only have an Ipad 9.7, do you think an Ipad pro makes a difference in these applications? These were so helpful. I got my degree and planned on med school, but life got in the way for a few years. Now I'm planning to go back and get an accelerated BSN next year - just taking some time to collect some savings first and prepare in every way possible. Your videos have been so excellent!
    The idea of relying on someone else's notes terrifies me, but I feel like I could accept it if I absolutely knew they were as focused and driven as I am. I'd definitely be tempted to at least skim the material myself, though. How would you go about finding people to take reliable notes? Good friends and good note takers are not necessarily the same ;)

    • @NurseLiz
      @NurseLiz  5 років тому +1

      So true about good note takers not necessarily being your friends! I actually went with my lab partners that seemed serious about school but also had crazy lives haha. That way I knew we all needed each other equally, and were serious about our education. I think ABSN programs are easier because most people are pretty serious about their education or they wouldnt be there, same with grad school. So glad the video was helpful! Thanks for watching and best of luck with your program!

    Despite technology I still prefer writing notes by hand-I simply learn the information better when I handwrite...however the school I am applying to is mostly online (well the lectures are anyway, everything else will be at the hospital and tests are taken in person) so I feel like that will be great because I will be able to rewatch lectures as often as I need. I am also thinking of getting an iPad because that will make everything easier :)

    Thank you so much for this video! For the total note-taking process, are you saying to, before the lecture, skim the reading for the objectives and take notes on those objectives. Then go to the lecture and take notes directly onto the printed off powerpoint slides? So your notebook has two sets of notes, the objective notes from the textbook and the powerpoint slides with notes, on the same chapter? Am I getting this right?

    Hey, quick question on sharing your notes: would you advise trying to find someone with the same "learning style" as you or close to it to trade/share notes with, or do you not think it matters all that much? I've gone through paramedic school and plan to go to nursing school next fall so I can be as cool as my wife, but I've always had trouble taking notes and getting too caught up in the details. This is especially difficult when some learning objectives say things like "Describe cardiovascular A&P". Any additional tips would be helpful. Thanks!

    I would split up my readings, but I would certainly be resistant initially. I am not yet officially in a BSN-granting program, so not all of my fellow students are great students, but once I get into a BSN-granting program, I'll probably have much more confidence in my fellow students.

    Hi Liz first of all I want you to know that I really appreciate your videos they are very helpful I am also wanting to go to nursing school and become a pediatric cardiac nurse. Right now I have CNA and my phlebotomy license. I was thinking about taking an EMT course do you think that would be helpful I'm getting me into nursing school? Also can you get into Pediatrics right after nursing school or do you need some experience first? That's why I was wondering if getting my EMT and working in the ER would be helpful for me in the long run?

      Argelia Archuletta I’m so glad it was helpful! I bought the books because I didn’t have a tablet until my last semester of grad school 🤦🏻‍♀️. But I think I probably would have done an ebook if I had one sooner. They are such huge books! Makes it hard to take them anywhere. One other thing I forgot to mention about Evernote that I liked was you can do the search function and find any topic you wrote notes on, in case you just want to do a quick search on one thing. What are you studying?

      Oh, that's awesome! I started using tonight. I am on my 3rd class EBP & Research. It's my 1st week and yes there are like 8 chapters to read for this week plus articles. I've been a nurse for 20 yrs and I always procrastinated to start NP school because I am not the best at writing papers. My primary language is Spanish so I struggle to write "Scholarly" Papers. I am determined though! :) I think i am going to buy ebooks until I get to my 2nd year and buy those books because I plan to keep those. I want to thank you for taking the time to do your videos you are a great inspiration! BTW your baby is adorable! Thank you!

      Aww thanks! And oh gosh, EBP and research nearly killed me. Not the most interesting months of my life haha.I HATE writing papers. I am so seriously impressed though with your skills! If you print the lecture notes did you write all of what the professor says on the same page, or did you also have a note nook to write there too?

    • @NurseLiz
      @NurseLiz  6 років тому +1

      If there was a powerpoint to print, I would print it before class, and write ON the powerpoint. That way all my notes were together. I would usually print 2 powerpoint slides to a page that way if there were small details I wouldnt miss them. And I usually wrote the notes the professor provided in a different color, that way I knew that it was from lecture, not something I found in a book.

  • @tgzmrhat
    @tgzmrhat 3 роки тому

    I would split it up but most of the time in online classes you don't get to know people well or even get a chance to speak to them outside of the weekly posting boards and responses. I could ask in the beginning but then does the teacher allow it and can you trust the people you don't know to do it well for you. I am right now really torn if I want to do the program at all I am 52 this year and will be 54 almost 55 when done then the boards again ugh this is a heavy choice.

      If you have access to the FNP review book by "Leik" you could review the peds chapter there. I found peds to be really challenging in school because they were trying to cram an entire HUGE specialty into once course. Which is so unrealistic. I found that really focusing just on what the syllabus objectives were was helpful. You can do it!

    Don’t feel pressured to write cute notes. It’s not for everyone, I used to do that a lot and find that I spend too much time on small details and 50% of the note taking time became arts and crafts.
