So I said that before I saw the ending. I do have an iPhone X and would love a lens because I shoot a lot of stuff on my iPhone when I'm traveling and can't get to another camera. I'm about to go to Boston to a Red Sox game in a few weeks and would love to use it there!

Nope it doesn't really matter, but why spend all those money on a bad camera, when you can have a better one for less. I was conned into buying the 5D Mark III about two years ago, and I am really disappointed. I am going to sell it pretty soon for a GH5, but I wish I hadn't spent all that money on a Canon...
Well, the better equipment is more like getting the little extra thing out of your footage and can help in difficult light situations you can‘t really take control of. But... it won‘t help very much in making a better movie. It can only help in delivering the story a little bit better ( Illusion of reality- Skin Tones and so on ) if you can really take advantage out of it... but that‘s it. If your blocking, the actors or the shooting script is crappy - well... in that case it will be crappy. It‘s still only a tool.
@@Albanez39 How can I say this to you.... when the 5D Mark II came out, it was used on such big TV shows as Dr. House and Dexter. So if this was good enough for those productions, it's definitely good enough for you. If you find operating the camera disastrous, download a little firmware hack called Magic Lantern. Our family used to have a digital point and shoot camera. I truly learned a lot from it; manual controls for photos and stuff. In highschool, we had a loooot of video projects. My sister lost our one and only point and shoot camera back then and we really can't afford to buy another one. Luckily, I'm surrounded with great supportive classmates. They always knew I'm into videography stuff. Whenever a school project is given to us, my classmates would let me borrow their phones and DSLR cameras. It was a wonderful experience and I'm very very thankful for that. It gave me an opportunity to improve my craft and enhance my skills despite not having my own "gear" until recently. Almost a year ago, I got a phone as a gift. It was better if I was given a proper DSLR camera, but who am I to complain? I continue shooting videos with my new phone applying my knowledge throughout the years. I also exploited the phone until I knew its full potential. In fact, my recent video was mistaken to be shot with a DSLR soooo many times. The challenge really is to stay creative despite the poor circumstances. Nevertheless, this video inspired me!! Thanks a lot Potato Jet!

Couldn’t agree more with this. I decided to invest in lights and haven’t regretted that decision at all. Knowing lighting and sticking to my mark iii for photography and some joking buddy shoots worked wonders. To me understanding the technical side of things and focusing on an understated skill, lighting, is important (note by understated I mean people put more into high quality cameras over learning how to position lights properly). For the price of a red raven dcm2 you can get 3 litemat 4, arri s60-c and a mole led 5k. This kit alone will rent like crazy and you can fool around with it constantly making you more akin to getting work. Two years ago I decided to get three litemats to learn lighting. Now, through renting and consistent work, I own 12 litemats, (2) skypanels, mole led 5k, 7 mole 2k, oft kit, 3 ton grip package, and by the new year I will get some more fun toys. Everyone wants a camera and thinks it makes them better. Focus on lighting and you will see the difference in your work.
Major info for video beginners. Thinking of d4darious who shoots on a D60 and has for years, knows EVERYTHING he can do with that camera and does it well. He's ready for Arri.
what he says about using bad cameras is 100% correct. that's how I've learned a lot of what I know. it's a challenge but when you nail it your gonna get great
As an old school photographer (before digital)... I appreciate your summary run-down of lighting situations. Awesome job! As far as that macro lens, well I would realistically use it for close-up stills of anything interesting like flowers, bugs, snowflakes, water droplets... I love the the world of small!!! 🐛
FTJ! FUEL THE JET! . I think this is the biggest question i get on my camera. I like the cost vs retun is hugely my reasoning on sticking with M50 for now until i am well enough on my way to say i can definitely afford and use a larger camera.
My biggest problem shooting is that I'm naturally shaky.. I do what I can to balance out like breathing exercises and staying away from caffeine. Hopefully investing in a gimble soon!
If you want a camera that records in professional standards like 10bit or ProRes get a Pocket 4K or GH5(s) if you need something more reliable. If you don’t have the money get the Canon M50, if you can’t afford that get a T3 (not T3i) and look for vintage lenses. If you need a zoom lens get the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 for the Canons, that should have you covered for a long long time. If you use an iPhone tape a cheap ND on the front and expose properly with Filmic Pro. There are no excuses left these days.
The thing is instead of fo using on equipments, people should get familiar with what they have and improve their skills first. If you blindly buy expensive equipments while don't even know what they do for you, that's just a waste of money.

100% agree! Gear doesn't matter when you know what you are doing. For instance, entry-level camera + decent or good lens can make better result than the expensive professional camera with crappy lens.
Thanks! You are so right! If Casey can make an 80D work well in 2019 why would I as a vlogger need an A7III... It's so important to generate value with a cheap camera before buying a prosumer model in the hope of making a UA-cam career.
Interesting points. It's as in my domain where beginners will likely start with highend computers and expensive software when programming is best to be learned in notepad++. Because you first need to understand the code and only after you need to more stuff. Beginers keep telling me who they need minimum an I5 with 12GB RAM, and SSD's etc. when they just want to learn web development in HTML, CSS, jQuery, PHP and mySQL. Getting to my issue now: What if you're only doing youtube videos and want a second camera, not wanting to get to a point where filming will lead to a professional job in this domain? What if you just want a better camera just for providing viewers with a better quality? Videos to share and also to enjoy in later life, remembering "the good old days". Not saying that I'm gonna buy a Red or a $2000 mirrorless. Let me explain... I have a Sony FDR X3000 that I use on my helmet for capturing landscapes and various situations while on my motorcycle. But, it's shaky when walking and filming. So, I need a camera to shoot while visiting sites on foot. A camera that has - audio in, - zoom capability, - good stabilization, - at least 3 hours of battery in 1080p@60fps, - good video quality (min 40mb/s) and it has to produse good quality at low file size (carring more then 2 external HDD is not to be desired as space and weight is a problem when travel long distances on the motorcycle) I travel at least for a month. - light weight to carry around. - not best but good for filming at night in towns. For filming in museums, and on the streets. Vlogg like videos. - not big enough to attract unecesary attention or to be considered "professional gear" - 2K resolution is ok as I now upscale 1080p to 1440p in Premiere. I don't shoot 4K with the FDR X3000 because of the file sizes. - no photo as I only use my phone for that and have no further need to improve on this issue I travel with my motorcycle and I need that kind of second camera. Already decided that gopro style cameras are no good for what I need. The "action" is already covered by the FDR X3000. The Osmo Pocket has to narrow field of view for what I need as I travel with my wife so I don't want to have it mounted on a 2m pole just to be able to be both in the frame. On the Osmo Pocket, if you don't have it on a certain distance, viewers will be able to see what I ate at the last restaurant :) What do you recommend? Is there a good camera for what I need? Been looking at the Sony FDR AX55, but it looks heavy and bulky. Thank you!
I may be nowhere near as pro as you Potato. I think you are awesome dude. But my perspective is this.I started off with a Sony HC-90 Pro sumer Standard Definition Handicam. Then jumped up to a Sony HC-7 HD Handicam. After that I learned that DSLR's shot HD video now (in 2011) I shopped around and decided that the Canon T3i would be perfect. Good price and great features. I was very happy with it's abilities. I finally had a video camera that had interchangeable lenses. I felt like I had a Pro camera body. Even though I didn't. Then in 2015. I upgraded to a 5D mark III and last in (2018) I got my 80D. So I now finally had a DSLR that auto focused on Video. So I have a nice set of 2 cameras for video and stills. I feel well rounded with one full frame and one cropped frame. I gave my daughter my Canon T3i so she could take better refrence shots for her painting and art work. My new favorite lens id my Canon 28 - 90mm Lens I got when I bought a used Canon Rebel Ti off of Amazon.
Wow! Well explained. #respectfromPakistan I have a dream to buy an arri alexa! My major in BS is electrical engineering, but i love to make films 😍♥️ i bought myself an mavic pro, cannon 80D and zoom H1. Just need this kind of motivation. I wish i could study filmmaking in the US. Thanks for such an amazing video. I want a heart 😊
i just bought the canon m50 and it is my dream camera right now, super excited for it to arrive next week! Bonus that school is all online for the next 2 weeks so i'll have plenty of time to practice
The first camera I grabbed was a t2i and I scratched the viewfinder focusing plate with my finger because there was dust in it and... my teacher never lend me a camera again. From that point forward I take care of my 200D like it's a baby and I'm doing great stuff with it
Going through the struggle and the journey is what makes a creative. I don’t know a single successful creative who hasn’t been on the journey learning every day.
That is why I only used fully manual cine lenses. Being able to accurately manually focus is a vital skill that young upcoming content creators are lacking due to superior auto focus.
Oh yes! That's hard for me to stick to this philosophy. I sometimes spend more time looking at videos of expensive cameras rather than shooting and experimenting. Which sucks. But my old Nikon D3300 taught me photography and videography - I think it was the first DSLR with 60 fps slow-motion and 24 fps frame rate shooting at 1080p in the consumer market. It's starting to get old but every month Nikon hold a contest in which you can win 2000$ for a 40 seconds video, and I noticed most of the winners are using the low-end models. And it's not a well known company for video either. The only things I can't think off that you can't really learn on a super basic camera are how to expose for LOG and how to deal with RAW files. But you can always hack an older Canon with Magic Lantern or get a BPMCC original for like 500 bucks used...
What would I do with such awesome macro lens? I'd go around my beautiful Siberian academic town, searching for scenery with very small objects and landscapes that look great, then I'd take pictures with crazy amount of bokeh in them and post them on instagram, then I'd get comments about "wow beautiful! what lens and DSLR are you using?" and I'll feel awesome cause someone would think that I own an actual DSLR lol And then I would send the lens to Mauz Shaikh. Cause the Earth NEEDS that ants documentary.
First video of yours that I've seen! Really enjoyed it man, great title, thumbnail and overall vibe! Gave me a great reminder that gear should never be a priority, keep it up!
After 10+ years of experience working in films I can confirm all you say. There are to much youtubers vloging with red cameras, it just ridicules. After years and years, you end up tired of carrying to much equipment, buy cheap equipment you can afford, then rent for bigger projects, that's what I do! PS. Nice channel you have here!
People that have an iPhone X can buy that lens without thinking twice. I am stuck with an Xperia Z3 Compact that has a broken back screen and a half detached digitizer. A couple of days ago I removed a small piece of glass from the angle of the back panel because it was full of dust and I couldn't take pictures anymore...
I'd definitely want to film my next short film using that macro lens! I borrowed a clip on lens from my friend and I was able to capture shots like the eyes, tree branches, etc using my phone! I imagine I can shoot even more and find more creative ways if I own a macro lens even for mobile!
I feel like he should update this video, now that the movie Searching and Unsane is out. It supports Potato Jet's narrative about how you don't need to have expensive gear and cameras to make a good film. If a narrative is what you're interested in.
Still I think a camera setup that's too bad will make things too difficult. For example using a phone can get good results but some shots are just not possible (if you don't have certain accessories). I think buying a good used DSLR or mirrorless is a great point to start from if you already know the basics. Maybe a used 5d ii a7 or just an old 600d(60d in the us? ) that can be had from anywhere from $120 upwards.
I wanna use it to add b roll macro shots to my videos. I am using the a6300 as my main cam and the lg v20 occasionally for b cam work. I can make a case for this to work with the lg v20 as i am a pretty good diy guy.
Haha! Your room wasn't dirty... but the back f that DOOR! Whew! Your apartment did remind me of my time living in LA in the 70s (Palms & later Woodland Hills). The Angenieux box made me wonder what was in it! They made some dynamite lenses in the 70s. Nice pep talk. I enjoy seeing your equipment & products, too. That commercial looked pretty good. Wonder what it was for. It is amazing what we can do with camera-phones these days. If I didn't already have an EOS-M6, I'd probably just get some good add-ons for my Galaxy S8+. I've seen a very cool cage for it, plus add-on lenses like your macro.
I absolutely love you videos man- so inspirational! (ive even started eating more nuts and broccoli). Have you considered podcasting? I really love how you talk about everything in the film world and camera world. Keep up the great work man, can’t wait for the next video.
Equipment matters. Obviously the way you shoot is the most important, but if you want the sharpest and cleanest images you need good equipment when shooting and editing. That’s when it comes down to person preference.
Loved the mindset here! I shoot on a DSLR, probably going to upgrade for 10 bit soon. Yeah I'd like a C300 or an FS5, but these days the best compact systems for video like GH5S or BMPCC are almost as good.
It depends on what are you want to create. Sure a DSLM with 4K is nice, but if You only own a Olympus OE-M10 III for example You're going to have a hard time when Color Grading because it does not have any Log Profiles... So yeah, somehow it's important what kind of gear you have.
One of the few Vloggers who I can watch for entertainment....even if I am not overly interested in the actual VLOG topic....lol.........How do you dooo the whoodooo that you dooooo?????
I think, to get really experienced, an analog camera does wonders. You don't have a screen to look at and no electronics to help you, it's just math and science. My wife does use Super 8 and 16mm camera for our travels, she has a small booklet with pre-calculated tables and a small booklet. Every time she lets me try it out, she has to explain me the controls everytime, which takes like 30 minutes. I once got one setting wrong, i believe it was the shutter or transport motor speed. It's crazy.
This is also applies to drones. I used to use a phantom 3 standard and flew it hard for 2 years. Long story short I won to drone film awards and beat all the high end drones. It all came down to shots and the music.
I have the Sony A7s and I think it's a pretty good camera with a great full HD quality. You can get one pretty "cheap" because it's not the newest camera. The lowlight performance is amazing. I am also thinking about getting a Atomos recorder to shoot 4k. P.S. There is a travel video shot with this baby coming on my channel pretty soon
My daughter could have a lot of fun with this lens attached to my iPhone and filming the littlest flowers or bugs in the park or cracks in the sidewalks. Good luck, everyone!
honestly if your camera can shoot 60 fps like a gh4 you can do a lot of cool stuff. like you said its about getting the most out of what you have at your disposal
I mostly agree, but I really dislike shooting with my old Canon T3i (600D), so it obviously all depends on your needs and production level. Lately I've mostly shot on the Ursa Mini Pro or the GH4 (which is still a great camera) and we tried matching one 650D (even with a neat Sigma Art lens) shot with them (needed all the cameras we can get)...quite a challenge ^^ Edit: I'm not an iPhone guy, so better not give the macro lens to me xD
I’d love to film some wildlife on my phone and be able to do macro photography. I have every Canon L glass I need but I’m only missing a macro lens and this would be perfect!
Dope video bro, you made a valid point to take what you have currently and learn it at it best. The earlier you make your mistakes the sooner you learn from them.
It feels bad that I’m a newbie too but bought a 80D :/ now I’m an amateur thanks to experience mistake that I did while using it,my pro photographer friend said I only utilise only 20% of my 80D and I can t denied that,I can say if I get 200D I can get the same result right now,if feels so wrong now that I have bought the 80D :( but I’m happy :D
I've been thinking about the fz2000 for a low-cost cinema camera I just got to get over the one lens thing what do you think oh yeah the Gy Ls300 looks good to and it's affordable.
The big advantage in having a giant camera is that you can be really weird on the street and as soon as the people see the big camera pointed at you it's suddenly totally normal
Hey. I really love your videos, they're always as funny as they are informative. I have a video request. Could you do a side by side comparison of footage shot on cinema lenses vs. photography lenses & discuss their pros & cons & when to use which.

Dude, I needed to watch this today. I literally watch your channel all the time. First time seeing this. Great Advice.
Goddamn it Jared! I knew you were into film making!
This would go handy seeing that a macro-smartphone photography competition is coming up in New Zealand 👍
Wonderful content and its teaching me alot for someone who wants to learn something new and shift from stills to filmmaking
Thanks! You are so right! If Casey can make an 80D work well in 2019 why would I as a vlogger need an A7III... It's so important to generate value with a cheap camera before buying a prosumer model in the hope of making a UA-cam career.
I can use it for tight shots, maybe portraits and i think the best usage for an macro lens like this is for products.
I just got an EOS 200d (SL2) with the kit lens for 400€ and I'm super happy with it so far.
Getting to my issue now:
What if you're only doing youtube videos and want a second camera, not wanting to get to a point where filming will lead to a professional job in this domain?
What if you just want a better camera just for providing viewers with a better quality? Videos to share and also to enjoy in later life, remembering "the good old days".
Not saying that I'm gonna buy a Red or a $2000 mirrorless.
Let me explain...
I have a Sony FDR X3000 that I use on my helmet for capturing landscapes and various situations while on my motorcycle. But, it's shaky when walking and filming. So, I need a camera to shoot while visiting sites on foot.
A camera that has
- audio in,
- zoom capability,
- good stabilization,
- at least 3 hours of battery in 1080p@60fps,
- good video quality (min 40mb/s) and it has to produse good quality at low file size (carring more then 2 external HDD is not to be desired as space and weight is a problem when travel long distances on the motorcycle) I travel at least for a month.
- light weight to carry around.
- not best but good for filming at night in towns. For filming in museums, and on the streets. Vlogg like videos.
- not big enough to attract unecesary attention or to be considered "professional gear"
- 2K resolution is ok as I now upscale 1080p to 1440p in Premiere. I don't shoot 4K with the FDR X3000 because of the file sizes.
- no photo as I only use my phone for that and have no further need to improve on this issue
I travel with my motorcycle and I need that kind of second camera.
Already decided that gopro style cameras are no good for what I need. The "action" is already covered by the FDR X3000. The Osmo Pocket has to narrow field of view for what I need as I travel with my wife so I don't want to have it mounted on a 2m pole just to be able to be both in the frame. On the Osmo Pocket, if you don't have it on a certain distance, viewers will be able to see what I ate at the last restaurant :)
What do you recommend?
#respectfromPakistan
I have a dream to buy an arri alexa!
What about lighting? good to invest in good lighting equipment? or are there like "dslr equivalent" lighting equipment?
I'd go around my beautiful Siberian academic town, searching for scenery with very small objects and landscapes that look great, then I'd take pictures with crazy amount of bokeh in them and post them on instagram, then I'd get comments about "wow beautiful! what lens and DSLR are you using?" and I'll feel awesome cause someone would think that I own an actual DSLR lol
And then I would send the lens to Mauz Shaikh.
That lens would be dope to try out on my next wedding film. Ring shots are my faves!
So much wisdom in one video. Thank you very much, Gene!!
I feel like he should update this video, now that the movie Searching and Unsane is out. It supports Potato Jet's narrative about how you don't need to have expensive gear and cameras to make a good film. If a narrative is what you're interested in.
It's forever going to be about story. Lighting and cameras will always come second to the richness of a good story.
Potato! You the best brotha. You won't hear advice like that everyday. Time to learn and make magic.
I have a question can you expose for the sky and lift the shadows?
I’d love to try shoot some flowing or running water with that macro lens! Thanks heaps!
Used Arri Alexa classics are now being sold by Arri for about 10-12,000 US dollars.
I've just found your videos and they're absolutely the most helpful I've found yet. Keep up the good work!
I wanna use it to add b roll macro shots to my videos. I am using the a6300 as my main cam and the lg v20 occasionally for b cam work. I can make a case for this to work with the lg v20 as i am a pretty good diy guy.
Hi, Potato Jet. what lense where you using with that Canon T2i?
6:20 Oh, the last thing I uploaded to my channel is a one minute short film which I did on a T2i and only practical effects!
This dude has great info for newbs. Please listen to this guy.
Dude when he’s vlogging and his hand off the wheel driving I get so scared 😂
Why tf dont you have 1M subs yet?!?!?! Come on people. Not all heroes wear capes
Thanks sir! Im so obsessed and stressed out in upgrading my gears. This reminds me that i already had enough gear for what i need.
It's crazy.
Succinct and energetic. Just the way an informative video should be. Well done.
This is also applies to drones. I used to use a phantom 3 standard and flew it hard for 2 years. Long story short I won to drone film awards and beat all the high end drones. It all came down to shots and the music.
Pretty cool progression you've made over the years!
Every time you said Alexa, you triggered my Echo Show! :)
I always watch potato Jet when I am sad 😁 Why is HE always happy 😫😫
honestly if your camera can shoot 60 fps like a gh4 you can do a lot of cool stuff.
like you said its about getting the most out of what you have at your disposal
06:32 Of course size is a huuuge factor! Only those who don't have it claim otherwise.
Thanks. This just made me rethink about getting a full frame. Gonna work with my crop sensor for now. What lens are you using here though?
would be nice to get that macro lens
Hi ...is the m50 good for food vlogs and kitchen videos
I mostly agree, but I really dislike shooting with my old Canon T3i (600D), so it obviously all depends on your needs and production level.
Lately I've mostly shot on the Ursa Mini Pro or the GH4 (which is still a great camera) and we tried matching one 650D (even with a neat Sigma Art lens) shot with them (needed all the cameras we can get)...quite a challenge ^^
Edit: I'm not an iPhone guy, so better not give the macro lens to me xD
I’d love to film some wildlife on my phone and be able to do macro photography. I have every Canon L glass I need but I’m only missing a macro lens and this would be perfect!
Dope video bro, you made a valid point to take what you have currently and learn it at it best. The earlier you make your mistakes the sooner you learn from them.
Hey, I would shoot bug hunting at lavender field in my neighbourhood. I did try with my dslr, was great but those close ups would up my game. Thanks
This advice applies to all careers. Thanks, Gene!
Thanks for all your knowledge - I do well better now figuring it all out with my G6 and two lenses :D
Cheers from New Zealand ;)
When i see ur post notification, then it feels like heaven
But how do you get your hands on so much pro gear ? Do you own it ?
It feels bad that I’m a newbie too but bought a 80D :/ now I’m an amateur thanks to experience mistake that I did while using it,my pro photographer friend said I only utilise only 20% of my 80D and I can t denied that,I can say if I get 200D I can get the same result right now,if feels so wrong now that I have bought the 80D :( but I’m happy :D
I've been thinking about the fz2000 for a low-cost cinema camera I just got to get over the one lens thing what do you think oh yeah the Gy Ls300 looks good to and it's affordable.
I agree.. kinda.. it's hard to beat using gear that works well and inspires you to WANT to make more.
The big advantage in having a giant camera is that you can be really weird on the street and as soon as the people see the big camera pointed at you it's suddenly totally normal
Some cool detail shot to put in b roll.
Yep, I am counted out also, only have the iPhone 7+ --- cool vid Potato Jet --
Hey. I really love your videos, they're always as funny as they are informative. I have a video request. Could you do a side by side comparison of footage shot on cinema lenses vs. photography lenses & discuss their pros & cons & when to use which.
Besides saying lots of right things, you're a real entertainer, man!
which mft lens you suggest for BMPCC4k?
Your Videos Makes Me Happy !.
THANKS 😀
Potato 🥔
what are some projects you've done on a dslr
Every single youtuber: Camera equipment doesn't matter, it is all about the cameraman not the camera.
Also Every youtuber: *Uses expensive RED Cameras of 60k, Arri cameras of a few $100k, Nikon and Canon cameras of more than $4K...*
I want to use the lens to record sharp and close.
