  • The Franks, a Germanic people originating from the lower Rhine River, played a crucial role in shaping medieval Europe. Initially considered barbarians by the Romans, they gradually integrated into the Roman Empire, first as mercenaries and later as allies. After the fall of Rome, the Franks, led by the Merovingian dynasty and later by the Carolingian dynasty, established a powerful kingdom that expanded across much of Western Europe.
The peak of Frankish power occurred during the reign of Charlemagne, who was crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 800. His empire encompassed most of Western and Central Europe, and his reign was marked by significant administrative and cultural reforms, including the Carolingian Renaissance. After his death, the empire was divided among his descendants, leading to the fragmentation of Frankish power and the rise of the feudal system, but the Frankish legacy continued to influence European culture, law, and politics for centuries.
