I’m an old man myself these days , but I remember my Gramps telling me a long time ago about his personal battle on Gallipoi , about the endless mud , the lice infected uniforms , the stench of the dead and the dying . I believe he was trying to warn me that war isn’t glorious , but oftentimes miserable . He told me that a close friend literally died in his arms . When will we as humans find another way to solve conflict and disagreements ? My Gramps died in 1965 , still carrying shrapnel he received on Gallipoli .

I remember the day it stands clear in my mind
We stood down by Dunlaoire to wave you goodbye
Your ma was quietly weeping there was a[Em] tear in her eye
As we sent you to Gallipoli to die
You looked so young as you stood there a glint in your eye
And you sang rebel songs as the streamers flew high
Your ma turned away and I heard a sigh
God your sailing to Gallipoli to die
    [Chorus]
You were all that we had your mammy and me
When you marched head a-rect you were proud as could be
And it killed your poor ma and it's slowly killing me
You were blown to kingdom come on the shores of Gallipoli

You were only nineteen yet your mammy and I
Let you go to Gallipoli to die.

They were all young men sent to fight old men’s wars, scarred forever if they survived. Horrific things happen in wartime, & not just to combatants. But there was respect on both sides I believe, & Ataturk’s speech can still bring me to tears. My heart aches for the Johnnies & the Mehmets, & sadly it seems we’ve learned little in the last 100 or so years.
