The first two books I have seen floating around the sewing community, but never saw the insides. So thank you for showing them! I am more intrigued to get them or put them on my wishlist for christmas for others to gift it to me ehehe
So glad you love the video! Yes they're both great books and compliment each other really well. Heheh I'd definitely add them to your present list this Christmas!! 🤣
It’s great that you are self taught. I am self taught in many things including sewing. I would like to point out that being only self taught there is no point of reference as to what it would be like to be trained professionally, and not just learning from books by professionals. I love learning from books but sometimes we don’t know what we don’t know so it’s good to keep an open mind. We can never compare to those who learn and work in the industry professionally, whatever skill we apply this concept to. Thank you for your videos. It’s been interesting following your sewing journey. 😊
That is very true! But I did actually live with two women at university who both studied fashion design and I have a basic understanding of what they were taught at a university level. It felt like at a degree level of fashion design you’re mostly taught how to build cohesive, original collections rather than in-depth pattern making skills. Their work was always really interesting and innovative, you could see they were taught how to think conceptually about designs and then apply that to starting their own fashion brands. As with anything, you still need to hone and develop your skills to push yourself further than what you’re taught. This is why my personal opinion is that you don’t need to go to fashion school to learn pattern making or start a career in one. Its always great however if you have the budget to find and enroll in specific pattern making workshops / courses at schools or online ❤️
I do have the Helen Joseph Armstrong and the Winifred Aldrich, after watching your video, I decided to go to Helen Joseph one and I find it easier than the Winifred Aldrich and am enjoying it now. Sewing can put you off, so thank you for the motivation to proceed. I want to make a few skirts.
Yes both really are great for different reasons, which is why I included both! ❤️ Sewing really can be such a time consuming process so I’m glad to provide some inspiration!! Skirts are definitely simpler to create than bodice blocks x
Another very informative video 👏 - thank you Tammy!! I have the 3rd edition of the Helen Joseph Armstrong book from ebay and 2 Vogue fitting books I found at the thrift store. The grading book would be on my Christmas wish list! Practice makes perfect should be our motto for us self-taught seamstresses! I do sewing alterations on the side, yet one day I aspire to have my own pattern line. Thanks for all your inspiration, Tammy! ❤😊
@@Tammy.Handmade Yes! Your videos are very enjoyable! One of the books is from 1972, and even though it’s older, it contains a wealth of information. Feel like I hit the jackpot when I see stuff like this at the thrift stores! Have a wonderful evening Tammy!❤
Bunka bodice is a really good source for basic sloper for women esp for busty girls as it has many darts. I tried helen josep but it ended up being so loose on my bust area..
@Tammy.Handmade you are welcome. There are explaination videos on youtube and the video of basic bodic block and sleeve drafting by modeliste studio is basically se as the bunka method.
Thanks for the video. I was just recently wondering what books I should get for making a block and learning pattern adjusting & fitting. I’m a 52 year old male that’s interested in making men’s clothing for myself or my sons as a home sewer (not planning on becoming a fashion designer/seller/business owner/seller). What would your books recommendations list look like for men? Are there books you’d recommend that are focused more on men’s bloc making, pattern making, fitting and adjustments? I ask because there seems to be so many sleeve, bust, skirt, women’s fashion related information I wouldn’t need and hope to find instruction tailored to men. Thanks:)
Yesss this is the hardest thing to do accurately! To be honest I have to ask my partner to help me. But it also might be worth taking your main measurements like bust, waist, hip and then using the standard measurements chart they provide in the books as a guide based on your measurements - like if you find your measurements sit in the size 12-14 then you can input your main measurements (bust, waist, hip) but use the book for the rest of the measurements you can't do on your own. I hope that makes sense 😅
These books are amazing but most of them follow standard measurements based on the European ,british or american standard. The drawback of these is that the vertical measurements are mostly off.since they assume as the person's size goes up so does their vertical measurements and vice versa. And the Helen Joseph-Armstong is really not for beginners. It will do your mind in and absolutely make you quit
Yes they do follow standard sized measurements but you can always adjust the block to fit your personal body shape after. I actually think even though the Helen Joseph Armstrong book is more complex, it’s the only book that included picture steps on drafting the blocks so personally I feel that’s pretty helpful for a beginner that might struggle with just written text ❤️
You presented appreciate books.Thank you. Happy new year.

Helen Joseph’s Armstrong book actually has a whole section at the back for men’s pattern making blocks! So that would be great for you ❤️
You can take a flimsy book to your big box office supply store and they often can cut the spine and spiral bind it.
Oh wow I didn’t know you could do that!! Thank you for suggesting ❤️
Which edition is the Helen Joseph Armstrong book since they do vary somewhat? Would really love to know.
It’s the 5th edition, I’ve left a link in the description box to the exact books I’ve bought ❤️
How can I get that book for learning himself
How do you take your own measurements? I have no one around to do that.
